I think the inherent problem in arguing with these people is that at base, the fact that we are made of elements, which in turn become minerals and other chemicals to them means "rocks." You go to the natural history museum and look at the "mineral room" and what is it filled with? Rocks! That's their level of understanding.

I have to respectfully disagree. I'm a sociologist and am interested in the sociology of religion. I also am married to a Jewish woman. I've hung out with pagans and neo-pagans of all sorts, with Muslims, with Hindu and Buddhists . . . . What I've learned is that Christianity almost exclusively focuses on belief instead of behavior. In other religions, the focus is on the here-and-now: behavior is far more important than belief. As some Jews have told me, "Don't act as if God is watching -- act as if your neighbors are watching." This makes tremendous sense, since God's action won't come until after you die (assuming there is a god), but your neighbors will take action in the present.
There are some very real pro-social things religions generally do: they help regulate relationships and behaviors within a community; they help people frame their personal experiences, life events, and relationships into meaningful wholes; and validate or refute other social institutions' norms.
That said, there are always people who will take their religious beliefs to extremes, like literalism. But most of them are interested in having a living relationship between themselves, their religions and society at large. Those people will adapt their religious stories -- or, rather their interpretations of their stories -- to fit modern circumstances. But for most people, the emphasis is on pro-social behavior rather than belief.
So I urge people to go a little easier on religion. It can help people to be better, since they are expecting their neighbors to be watching. But people like little Mattie Powell, the Evil Dr. Peel's radio-controlled animatronic minion -- lay on!

I can follow cosmological arguments up until they get to a first cause. It makes sense that if the chain of events going back in time isn’t infinite then there will be an end to that chain. A first cause.
Then they wave a hand and give it human properties. Why? There was nothing in the argument that said the first cause had to think and feel and want.
I think they assume that because artificial things are made by humans, the universe must be artificial and made by a more powerful person. The universe can’t just be a natural phenomenon.
      I think it’s a form of hubris.
We can make pottery so we told ourselves a story where god made us like pottery and blew life into us. And he made us in his image, whatever that means.
I think it’s far more likely we made god in our image to deal with the idea that the universe doesn’t care about us and doesn’t even know we exist.

As a former simple-minded fundamentalist Christian, I can totally understand why his mind could work like this and cherry-pick something and take it out of context and turn it into something it isn't, because that is after all how we have so many different denominations of Christianity, you get wackos who disagree with what they were taught and the interpretation of scripture when they see a quote in the scripture that means something else to them than what they are taught, and they give that quote a completely new meaning that is completely absent from the context from which it was taken from, and this is exactly how preachers come up with such bogus ideas from behind the pulpit, and it doesn't end at scripture.
This is exactly how they interpret the world outside of their bubbles, they hear or learn of something and they give it their own interpretation without having any context to really understand what it was, and this is how these people end up looking so foolish to the rest of us who understand these things. He does not think it is a straw man because he doesn't understand it still, and because these people don't want to waste their time doing more thorough research on things they disagree with, they just stick with the bullshit that feels good to them because they don't think it's true anyways so it's not important to them to learn more about it.

Ah, Matt “the air in space changes how the sun acts/ages” Powell. As a teacher, I encounter students like him on occasion, where they work harder to not learn something because they think they’re saving time. They waste their time and their GPA until they realize they can’t “cheat” like this. I wonder what his schooling was like that he never unlearned this behavior.
Even if Matt was right in his strawman, that SOME people believe it, he still needs to stop using it because:
    A. This is not the scientific consensus
    B. The particular atheist he speaks to doesn’t believe it so it is unnecessary to bring up in the discussion.
It would be like me saying “Christians believe in alien-facilitated reincarnation” while talking to him. Even if I could find a Christian who believes this (and I can, this is not a random example), Matt does not believe this and the Bible does not support this, so there is no point in me bringing it up in my UA-cam videos as a smug gotcha against all Christians.
All this aside, it’s clear he is phrasing the hypothesis as “they think we evolved from rocks” for some reason. Phrasing aside, he did not provide any counter-argument to the hypothesis. He just thinks it’s silly. So not only is this whole thing an exercise in How Not to Debate, but he doesn’t even provide anything more than “this sounds silly”.

Hello professor Stick, just wanted to say that I have been enjoying your videos for quite a while now. You got me interested in the medical field and for my bachelors thesis (computer science) I decided to write a work about AI, supercomputers and cancer. I am in my second semester now, but I already have a very good idea of what I want to do. It would be cool if I could ask you some questions about it some day, but you must be busy outside of your UA-cam channel. Anyways, thanks for your videos.

I said it before and will say it again: Are they suggesting that rocks gave birth? Do they give birth? Cuz depending how you interpret that we came from rocks it could mean rocks gave birth or life began on a rock could be a space rock or a planet rock Earth is just a big rock with water and gas on it, either way depends.
Someone should ask this question next time someone debates this again.

Love how creationists think they understand science better than scientists themselves when in fact, they can’t comprehend what they read, makeup straw-man arguments against scientific theories (like the Big Bang), cherry-pick scientific facts to fit their ideology, and cater their lack of understanding to an audience that doesn’t understand science either.
