My question has always been, if the earth is flat, why does all of the mathematics for the heliocentric model work? Flat earthers are yet to produce a model. Why does the lie have more evidence than the flat earth? Why is there only one heliocentric model, and countless ideas, with no actual model, for the flat earth? For a more accurate cheating and friend example, Eric goes to his friend and tells them his wife is cheating on him. Being a friend they ask Eric why he thinks that and he produces a list of 200 "proofs" he claims show his wife is cheating. However when his friends reads these "proofs" (many of which are just a previous "proof" reworded) he see's they are a load of misunderstands, unsubstantiated rumours, things Eric has taken out of context or he's just made up to try and back up his belief. No matter how many times his friend explains to him how he's wrong and none of his proofs prove remotely she's cheating and some show the exact opposite, Eric refuses to change his belief about his wife. Finally Eric starts twisting his friends words and claims he must be in on it too. Finally his friend sadly gives up and says he has to go as he's got work in the morning. Eric claims victory and moves on the his next friend. His wife, back at home, cries herself to sleep alone.

The short of it is found in this video, that the conspiracy theory isn’t one thing (flat Earth) but part of a larger narrative based the person’s worldview (everyone is lying, people higher up want to trick you, the government is out to do something insidious). This is why it is do difficult to address; poking a hole in one claim via evidence cannot undo the entire narrative.

The problem with all conspiracy theories is that, if there really was a conspiracy there ought to be no evidence of it. (Assuming the perpetrators do their job properly) The conspiracy Theorist tends to mistake their own incredulity as evidence of a cover up. The fact that they believe they have found evidence tends to point to a misunderstanding of the facts and leads them to the belief. The government or a hidden power is capable of conducting a given plan mobilizing the logistics and personelle with absolute precision and then are suddenly incompetent when it comes to covering up what they suppose they are doing. It's Dunning Kruger these people are blissfully unaware of what they don't know. Whilst at the same time believing that they are the only ones capable of uncovering the truth.
Theories like Flat Earth or the Moon Landing Hoax are, in themselves not that harmful. But tend to be a gateway to other theories that have consequences. Like AntiVax 5G and Climate Change Denial.

I'm glad you pointed out the school thing. Cause I keep hearing this from flat earthers about how we (Globe earthers they say) have been conditioned to simply believe everything we are told from authority figures. Government, educators, media, so on.
I've always been very bluntly confused by this? Were they not taught the scientific method? Did no one every explain to them how to conduct research or do experiments? Or how to build ideas and test them? My school did an amazing job helping explain this, we learned it for about a month every single year.
However, at the same time I know people from my school who are now adults who are just like this. Often claiming that they were never taught this even when we sat in the same class at the same time when it was taught. While I can't say this about every flat earther, I like to think most of them are very willfully ignorant or just untrusting of just about everything around them. It kind of reminds me of a joke I heard once from a show. A bit about a man who complains that the schools didn't teach them anything useful and why didn't they teach them to do important stuff like Taxes? Where the person doing the joke explains they did, it's called math and they just didn't pay attention.
My advice, if a flat earther is bugging you, listen but don't give them satisfaction. Just repeat things like, interesting, good for you, wow that's something, until they realize you not only are not arguing, but not even listening. They'll show they are mad about that and not the "science" they try to push about the earth being flat, also showing their true colors... The idea of an "organized authority/system" that's secretly hiding, obscuring, ignoring, and/or silencing the truth is a commonly-espoused theme among the psuedoscientific, religiously extreme, and conspiracy-nuts of all types & stripes; makes them both Feel and Look [to some] like their "honest questions" are justified and that they're "just being reasonable", and it acts as a convenient excuse or escape-hatch in a number of situations. Psuedo-Skeptics, all of them.
So, it's not much of a surprise that they'd try to criticize Scientific "authority" and act or pretend to be 'open-minded' themselves, because that's the same methods [of Argumentation & Rhetoric, but not Thought] that their religious "education" instilled in them in order to undermine the fields of study that show findings contrary to their belief & belief-based traditions, and their ideological leaders certainly can't refute, dispute, or disprove the findings themselves so the only option they have left to counter it is Long-Term undermining, slandering, & discrediting via social mechanisms & generational indoctrination. And if we're not careful, they could still succeed, as they've [kinda] effectively had Millennia of Practice at social-coercion & dogma.

I had an awesome revelation last night. My wife was doing some star trails from our balcony. She had a satellite show up in some of the images.
"Which satellite do you think this is?" She asked.
I pulled out my phone, opened the "heavens-above" app, and started scrolling back through data for our location, and the time she took the photo.
It appears she'd captured Tiangong flying over New Zealand last night. Now, the flerfs will often say that the ISS is just a laser hologram (technology that doesn't exist in the form they pretend it does) but sites like heavens-above, based on accurate orbital models, allow me to look up the most obsure and the faintest satellites and reliably point a camera at them from my backyard. There are thousands of objects listed and the predictions work anywhere in the world. I've pointed this out to flerfs and they only response is "you are wrong" (no evidence or reason provided, naturally).
This doesn't really make any sense. Just like all FE arguments.
Sure, they are great debators (the do it in mass, after all...) but clever argument and a glib tongue don't really match science, measurements, measurment and (real) observation.

Their egos are so fragile that they will cling to anything that gives them that sense of superiority. They have this idea that they are so special and intelligent that they are one of the few who cannot be fooled and know the truth. They also stoke their own egos by being one of the few who are generous enough to try and educate the world on the truth. They do this so they can convince themselves how giving and magnanimous they are. They build up their fragile, delicate egos by convincing themselves that they are willing to sacrifice everything to help you. Everything they do is out of pure selfishness and is only to make themselves feel better about themselves.
They dig their heels in so deeply that, even when presented with irrefutable proof, they will ignore it or outright dismiss it. Even if they were given a chance to go into space to see with their own eyes they would refuse claiming all manner of conspiracies on how they were fooled (ie drugged or CGI etc) because admitting they were wrong would shatter everything their ego has built up and this would reduce them to such a low level they cannot bear to even imagine it.
Have you noticed how NONE of them have taken one of their beloved P900 or P1000 cameras, connected it to a balloon and let it rise to heights high enough to see the curvature? It just occurred to me that the airplane footage in the flat earth video actually kind of debunks flat earth itself, because the horizon of a flat earth would not appear flat and even from that height unless you were in the dead center of the flat earth model. The edge would be closer to you on one side and farther on the other, with the sides curving away, it would look like you were standing off-center in a hoopla hoop. But on a globe earth, the horizon would appear to be even and equidistant no matter where you were.

They're running out of gaps to fill with their God and so the die-hards are reverting to the most batsh**t, fundamentalist version of the faith and rejecting all evidence out-of-hand. "Intelligent design" is a kind of last-ditch attempt at making their faith fit with modern scientific understanding and it's mostly failed; scientists and fundies alike reject it. The young-Earth creationists are the ones left, kicking and screaming as their untenable beliefs fall apart, requiring them to either give up the faith or dive deep into the conspiratorial mindset. It only takes a few minutes to explain the basic motion of the earth around the sun, and a few hours to actually put that knowledge into a program (or spreadsheet) that tells you where the sun is at any given time at any given point on the earth. Which you can then verify.
On the other hand, there is a five-hour video series that _only_ explains why ships disappear bottom-first on a flat earth. You, as a flat earther _can_ only take this on faith because when you try to understand the video you will be a) bored to death, und b) fail to understand it (for the obvious reasons). No reason given as to why if the Sun is too far for us to see, it can still be seen when flying high over the Earth when it is supposedly further away, or how it is that the Sun, the brightest thing in the sky can be too far away for us to see but the light from the Sun is still easily seen just after sunset.
