    I like how creationists talk about "GOOD" or "BAD" mutations, as if they were exams and someone came to give a note. They don't understand that the same mutation can decrease by 3% the activity of the proton pump but also lower by 8% the probability of a stroke, for exemple.
    Epigenetics doesn't seem to be a word they ever read either.
    But one thing that is true is that much lower natality rate, much lower infant mortality rate, and evidence-based medicine is hugely reducing selective pressure, and allow phenotypes (which is actualy the only aspect that matters when it comes to selection, not the genotype itself) to pass through, that would have been selected out in an harsher environment. But this different environment may also be allowing new beneficial traits to appear and be positively selected, so even there the concept of "BAD" mutation is moot. Ulitamely only the environment gets to pick which traits and phenotypes can stick around, and which don't. Human judgement doesn't apply.

    I find it weird how he states that natural selection DETECTS advantageous and deleterious mutations like evolution or natural selection is acting with agency; thereby assigning anthpromorphic qualities to a process that has no consciousness. That said I find a lot of people anthropomorphising allsorts of nonconscious processes because they find it easier to relate to them. But when you start getting into the more scientific parts of these things, it often hinder understanding rather than help it.
    Creationists in particular do this, because they are unable to concieve of an effect without a concious being having caused it.

    • @bsadewitz

      @bsadewitz 2 роки тому

      Not only do you not need a being to cause something, but you don't even need a first cause. There is nothing illogical about there being an infinite causal chain. Ultimately, though, what they seem to miss is that the very essence of faith is belief without proof. Religious people who bothered to think throughout history have written a lot about this. I suppose Kierkegaard is just another victim of "cancel culture" ;) .It is the personal burden of the faithful to reconcile reality with their faith. That is how it is SUPPOSED to work. That is Job. That is Abraham and Isaac. I just can't anymore with these people, why don't they want good things?

  • @Drazex
    @Drazex 2 роки тому +15

    What you're missing from his argument is that he's making the (unfounded) assumption that "neutral" mutations are "deleterious" throughout the video. His logic seems to be something like "Mutations are when a mistake is entered into the genome, mistakes are bad, and the more mistakes you have the worse off you are, even if any one typo doesn't cause a major problem itself". Taking his analogy forward, his understanding seems to be that the human genome is a book, and that mutations are just random letters getting removed or replaced, and so even those "mutations" that don't prevent the book from being readable (it's easy enough to not even notice if "noise" becomes "nolse", for example), as the typos continue building it slowly goes from being flawed by readable to being complete gibberish.
    It's obviously a completely BS argument, but I feel like this entire video you were addressing a different point than the one he was making. Rather than addressing the fundamental misunderstanding (IE, that "neutral" mutations are still bad somehow), you instead focused on just "Well yeah, you're just talking about neutral mutations, so what's the problem?"

    • @jtveg
      @jtveg 2 роки тому +7

      Indeed that's what Powell is implying. Even though he says neutral mutation are neither beneficial nor deletirious he still considers them bad because they are copying _errors._ Errors are bad so neutral mutations must be bad in the long run is his thinking. Which is wrong of course.

Not an area I know much about, but something I amaware about due to having heard of people who happen to have conditions caused by a minor cell mutation that their parents both had, but hadn't been active until their generation (one I saw had siblings all being effected by the same condition, whilst both parents weren't because of it being inactive before they were born).

    The entropy of a system can go down in one location if it increases for the entire system.
    Freezing ice for example decreases it's entropy becoming more organized. This is because the ice releases heat as it cools. This heat increases the entropy of the system even as the ice crystals organize.
    DNA is so well preserved because the nucleotides release heat as they synthesize via phosphate reactions. This is why genetic entropy is bunk.

    Well, certain deleterious mutations hang out in the genome many generations -- due to most of them being recessive.
    This means that a very small number of individuals are impacted, thankfully. But it does mean a very large number of non-impacted carriers, keeping the "bad" gene going.
    This is why the genome mapping project is important ---- we have the technology to find and eliminate such genes.

    I love how he mentions neutral mutations, equivocate them to typographical errors, and say that our genetics must be deteriorating.
    Why mention them to be neutral anyways? This should already show how dishonest his conclusion is, because it should already be clear that those specific mutations aren't doing anything.
    Also, mutations are only analogous to typographical errors in that they are only changes to the code. It is more accurate to say that mutations are simply genetic changes, and they vary between good, neutral and bad.
    And since most of them are neutral, then it is more accurate to say that most mutations don't do anything. That's it.

Did. Not. Know. What. To. Do. Never heard the term before, didn't know enough to debunk or even logically argue against it, and I HATE losing debates with people like this due to my own ignorance. I used every tactic in the book to try and get away from this subject, but he knew I didn't know and he knew he had me. It's always stuck in my craw losing that one, and the scientific papers I found on the subject were D E N S E and not written for layman's at all and unless I was just gonna copy and paste the articles, that wasn't gonna help.
