Of the Fab Four- for me, Williamson and Smith are a long way ahead of the other two. If Root plays the rest of his career at the standard he is now and has an amazing Ashes down under, he cements himself alongside those two. Kane has consistently been understatedly brilliant and if he played for a big test nation, he'd have played enough to get the respect he deserves. Virat isn't good enough at test cricket to be seen as a generational great. If Smith continues to come back from this slump, he will rightly be seen as the best.
I look at his technique and don't think it's down to any deficits he has, apart from not being able to properly acclimatise when he plays there. He plays two match series almost everywhere he goes. We can't ever know this but my hunch is that if he played for one of the big three, his numbers abroad would improve.
