This Australian side had the best spinner ever as well as a batting line up full of players who’d have taken the windies quicks on. In a tight tussle, I’d say this Australian side would just be ahead.
Hate it when people say macgrath was a medium pacer, he wasn't, for most part of his career macgrath was 82-86kph range, that is not medium pace, he would bowl 140kph ish consistently in the mid and late 90s. Vaas was a medium pacer, Pollack after 2001 was a medium pacer, so was prasad.

What’s mad here.... Despite some shocking results I really liked this England team... Atherton Butcher Thorpe I always think are underrated. Gough and Caddick capable of being amazing. No doubt in my mind if they were looked after like the current team (Anderson/Broad) they’d have had incredible careers. That being said.... this Aussie side is insane
Yup,they played against some of the greatest cricketers of all times, just pure skill wise, that Aus team was something else,it had that aura, probably WI of 80s had it and then Aussies, don't think anyone has it now.
Not underrated but they just didnt performed on big stage..big players always show their class under difficult situation..look at drawid, lara, sachin etc..
Mark Waugh catch at 19:06 looks similar to Herschelle Gibbs’ dropped catch in the 1999 semi final. He goes to throw it forwards but it slips out the back of his hand.
They were just so good back then, Australia. We did well to win one game in a series. Yet the first shoots of building up to 2005 were being put in place.
This is the last ashes series in which Australia has won comprehensively without levelling the series golden days for Aussies under the captaincy of legend Steven Waugh everybody knows what had happened after 2005 series
@@AndyFNQ84 They haven't won Ashes series in England since 2001 either they have lost or drawn the series In 2019 they were soo close to win the series comprehensively if Nathan Lyon had not missed 😑the runout of Jack Leach in Headingley Test

big respect for the batsman who played against this team.if mcgrath accuracy didn't get you, then gillespie will if he misses you have to face the speed of lee and the slip cordon with bucket hands and a keeper who doesn't miss any ...nightmare tbh
Looks like Mark Waugh did a Herschelle Gibbs at the end of the England innings. You must not only hold the catch, but must be "in control of the further disposal of the ball." Though at least Junior didn't drop the World Cup.
Quality wise the Aus team that toured in 97 was better then this team. The only difference is under Waugh and Buchanan aus was more bold , ruthless and aggressive. Also the lower order became more resilient with Gilchrist at no 7.
The spin maestro at its best. Mark ramprakash, mark butcher and garham Thorpe all were best in first class cricket but sadly couldn't play well in international level
Graham Thorpe could. The other 2 could as well, the problem was Australia. They were too good at that time. What didn’t help was the constant chopping and changing of the team.
It's because this Australian team was that good that India's victory is so heralded. I'm still cursing the follow on decision plus the 2 sessions where we lost 7 wickets. The follow on decision cost us the win, the poor batting in the final session cost us the game. And the follow up collapse in the 3rd test prevented us getting the extra 100 runs that would have taken India out in the 4th innings, where they ran into trouble chasing a pretty gettable target.
Australian are a quality team... But they go to any extend to win match like sledging and all... They are world champions of sledging also...... No other team is as worst as Aussies in character
Ramprakash and Hick were 2 of the most frustrating players I’ve ever seen play for England. So talented, and on their day, brilliant batsmen. Unfortunately for England they didn’t have those days often enough. I’m not sure what it was. A concentration issue maybe??
I think the lack of support from the selection committee didn't help. Both men were constantly under pressure of the sack instead of being told "You're the 2 best batters in England, you're in the team for the long term. Runs will come." I think a McCullum approach would have worked wonders.
McGrath - The Lord of Lord’s

Mark Waugh got out 0n 99 in 1993 at lords and he waited till 2001 to score a hundred at lords
Opened the bowling in the 1993 Test in both innings.
Rahul Dravid waited 15years after getting out on 95 in 1996 and later got it in 2011.
