- Mackenzie Phillips and Valerie Bertinelli performing "Don't Go Breaking My Heart" By Elton John and Kiki Dee
Season 2, Episode 12 - "Happy New Year"
First Aired: December 28, 1976
UPDATE:
[I see a lot of 'ignorant comments' about Mackenzie Phillips’s career and musical legacy, and I decided to leave a short informative update to bring her Baby Boomer "fans" up to speed.]
On Mackenzie Phillips's {Name Variants on her published works include: Laura McKenzie Phillips, Laura Mackenzie Phillips, Laura MacKenzie Phillips, MacKenzie Phillips
M. Phillips, MacKenzie, Mackenzie Phillips, McKenzie Phillips, Mack, (Molly Phillips)] musical legacy--
Actually she IS a singer, performer, musician, and song-writer... I am 33 and she is MY FAVOURITE SINGER! She has had a very loyal and dedicated fanbase and cult-following with Millennials, like myself for the last 20 years. She sang 3 seasons worth of original music as the character Molly Phillips on Disney's So Weird, [that is streaming on Disney+ NOW!] She also wrote a bunch of songs with her dad John Phillips as one of the new and last member's of The Mamas & the Papas during the latter years of the band's album releases and concert touring (mid 80's to early 90's). I'm a huge fan so forgive me as I continue...
She sang backup on her dad's album Pay, Pack & Follow, on her sister Bijou's album "I'd Rather Eat Glass" as well as Peter Tork's - "Stranger Things Have Happened". Interestingly enough, the only reason she got the role of Carol in American Graffiti [her break out role] was because an exec has seen her perform with her childhood band back when she was 14. She even recorded the song "Junk Food Junkie" with The Jackson 5 which was featured on their show 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘑𝘢𝘤𝘬𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘴 in 1976. She still writes music with her son Shane Barakan and recently had a performance at Agape International Spiritual Center in Beverly Hills, California. It's crazy to me that most fans from her breakout era know very little about her musical legacy. So far as thinking she hasn't made her mark like her two sisters and her parents did in the industry. It's actually quite far from the truth. She's a musical genius and an icon silently standing right along side her very musical family. Currently she is a drug and alcohol counselor at Breathe Life Health Center in Hollywood, and she is a co-host on her own recovery podcast called 𝘈𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘢 𝘙𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘴. New episodes are uploaded on iTunes and Spotify every Tuesday. FUN FACT: Her younger brother Tamerlane Phillips has also put out his own record in 2008 entitled 'Spiritual Blossoms' with Andru Cann. [Can you tell I'm a huge fan!?]
I remember when this first aired. Loved it then. Love it now. Both ladies were so good but Val was absolutely adorable here.
Lol, I remember this classic scene. And from what I recall was that I read in the Entertainment news of those years, was that Elton John had seen this episode, himself. He was so impressed by Valerie's performance that he set out to meet her in person & thanked her. What a lucky lady! :)
that is so great Kimberly. So great love that and I saw that episode it was great.
I Love MacKenzie Phillips & Valerie Bertinelli, They Play So Well Together!
Sad to think ...... I am old enough to remember watching this as it aired for first time back in 70's ...... i was about 12 years old
me too! I was also 12.
Same here! I was in middle school
I was 7 when this was aired
I heard Valerie say years later that she was terrified of having to sing when she was surrounded by actors with musical talent. She didn’t need to worry. She may not sing as well as them, but she pulled this off really well, and she looked adorable doing it.
Mackenzie and Valerie are TOO CUTE.
I love this! I watched this show as a teen but had no idea what a great physical comedian Valerie Bertinelli is. This was masterful! I was just nosing around for some Mackenzie Phillips singing performances when i found this, but Valerie definitely steals the show!
I disagree that Bertinelli steals this show. But that's ok.
Valerie steals all of the shows!!
She did a good job as Elton John
I used to watch One Day at a Time when I was 8 years old and had the biggest crush on Barbara Cooper (Valerie). I don't remember much about the TV show, but this performance is the one thing that still stands out in my mind, 42 years later.
Same here but, I was 10.
We all had the biggest crush on Barbara Cooper
Sweet then, sweet now. Elton really was Valerie's rock god ... who knew she'd tie the knot with Eddie Van Halen?😍😙
And that Elton would outlive EVH.
I remember seeing this when I was little. I have loved this song ever since.
Beatiful sweet valerie bertinelli was great 😊
I was hoping to find this clip. I remember when it first aired. Val was such and Elton John fan. This was just perfect. Both did an awesome job! Thanks for posting this. Gotta get my One Day At A Time DVD'S out and watch :)
I remember this well, play it regularly.
I was never able to catch this episode, so thank you for uploading.
I miss those days so much lately that it made my cry a mixture of tears of joy and melancholy.
This is why the 70’s are THE best!!!
xoxo The Clarences
Thank you for uploading this! I loved this episode when I was a kid. I even recorded them singing with my tape recorder. LOL
This was a fun episode to watch.
Mackenzie Phillips should have been huge in the 70s she had an amazing voice. Love One Day at a Time one of my all time favorite TV shows.
She plays a rockstar in Disney’s So Weird streaming on Disney+ !! 3 seasons of original music!! 🫶🏽🙏🏽
was watching the season three intro that had a clip of where they were doing this and had to find the full scene. Valerie was just too damn cute doing this scene and Mackenzie Phillips was awsome as well. I remember seeing this as a kid, I had a huge crush on Valerie and safe to say still do. I can't believe they tried to make a piece of shit reboot of this show on Netflix, it will never have the chemistry of the original that made me fall in love with it. RIP Bonnie Franklin and Pat Harrington. Thank you for posting this!
The 70s and 80s were the best.
Mackenzie got her family's voice. Superb!
IKR!! Mack, Chynna, Bijou, & Tamerlane are all musicians. Their oldest brother Jeffrey is the only sibling who never pursued music, I believe. ❤️🔥🫶🏽
I love the facial expressions! This was funny!
They genuinely felt like loving, but mischievous sisters to me on that show, "One Day at Time".
They are still very close and consider each other Sisters! ❤
@@SoWeirdBoy Wow, really? That's marvelous.
This is the first rendition I saw after I was hooked on rock and roll
Lol. I'm watching Vaeries Home cooking. She mentioned the One Day At a Time episode where they sang this song. I grew up watching the show; but I was 9 when it first aired. Still...we don't have all the distractions like we do today.
OMG I don't remember this one, so much fun to watch now.....years later :)
This was on the night I was born!
I haven't seen this since it aired originally! I went looking for it because a buddy sent me the audio of Van Halen at Whiskey a Go-Go.. NYE '77. I see that I was off by a year.
I fell in love with Valerie right when she dribbled the basketball in the intro of the first episode of one day at a time.
valerie really sings Youve got a friend by carole king in the movie young love, first love 1979 with tim hutton. tim sings "sunshine" by john denver. they were both very good.
Holy Cats!
I forgot all about that movie.
I hope they show it on TCM, as they have been showcasing a lot of films from the 70's and early 80's on late nights.
I've already seen half a dozen of those types of films. Films that I was "Too Cool" to go see when they came out.
Thanks for reminding me of what I foolishly missed.
That was wonderful
I can't remember whether I'd seen this clip, but I remember they used it in the title sequence for a long time.
76? i was 3 n remember seeing this and all the buzz related.
Love this!
Haha, it's so amazing how LITERALLY ANYTHING YOU CAN THINK OF, IS ON UA-cam! LOL
Dane Cook made that joke during an SNL monologue, saying you could type random keys and something would pop up. Giving "a colon F6" as an example, the next day there were a bunch of videos titled "a:F6."
I keep watching this and just had to say I don't ever really remember seeing anything with Valerie in it playing it and hamming it up like she did in this scene. I wish there would have been a few more episodes like this where they really showed that Valerie and MacKenzie's musical talent and show cased it more. Because they had more talent than sadly the majority of shit actors/actresses in Hollywood today.
Yeah, I'm watching this, and I noticed that Valerie was a ham the moment she hit the stage. Mackenzie couldn't have been the next Kiki Dee, but she was taking her performance a little more seriously... at first.
BTW, Elton John loved this bit.
fun and good music!
I also love when Kiki Dee also sang it.
Mackenzie is a really great singer! Not sure why she didn't make a career of it. Maybe too many pitfalls from the early days, but I like her voice a lot. Maybe a little similar to Joan Jett.
Yes,the drugs derailed her career but she had an amazing voice.
She Was In The New Mamas and Papas When They Got On The Olidies Circuit!!
She did have a singing career 👍🏼
Thank You for Uploading
This was so awesome!!!!!
"...'knockin' at my door' *knock knock*"
This is great!
I Love Valerie Bertinelli
We Share the Same Birthday
April 23
I remember seeing this and thinking, “Is this what they chose to perform in a nursing home?” That song was relative new and the residents were relatively not.
Hahaha its all relative man
🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you don't think MacKenzie Phillips wasn't a star, you're sadly mistaken.
Mackenzie was very talented there's no denying it, sadly she got involved in drugs and really screwed up her career.
It's funny I went back and watched Elton John and Kiki Dee's version of this and came back and Mackenzie even looks alot like Kiki did when they recorded the duet.
sadly I saw an interview where McKenzie said there was a lot of animosity between her and Valerie because she was growing up into a star and at the time she had some resentment towards her. I don't know if that's still true or not but I hope not. I would like to think they have kept in touch but hard to say.
Yes, absolutely.
@@swampwitch6133 I agree.
Classic
Ms.Bertinelli has stated in an interview that she didn't like singing on those New Year's Eve musical review episodes..but? she did like performing this musical parody of Kiki Dee(performed by Ms.Phillips)and Sir Elton John(Performed by Ms.Bertinelli)in glittery top hat and large eyeglasses.
She was a big fan of Elton John.
Ladies- I just saw you on TV a day or two ago- such love and fun and yummy food :)
Valerie’s Home Cooking!!! That was a great episode!! 🙌🏽😍🙌🏽🥰🍽🙌🏽😋
can you imagine gettin in that Valerie Bertnernie back then?!!! oh wow she was smokinnnnnnn
Muito bom mesmo 😃!!!
O BRASIL AMA VOCÊS !!!
This was a highlight of the show from back then. But why did that old age home look like a haunted house ?
Gotta love the late fifties and sixties slowly molding into the seventies 🤲🏽😅 One thing I love about the 9 seasons of this show, is how the styles change throughout it’s run. Such a noticeable difference between the eras!
Driving me nuts for years that I watched a Summer schedule filler on CBS that was something like "Valerie Bertinelli Music Special." She did different artists and Elton John impersonation on stage just like him. It was outstanding. Can anyone help? Or post the video link?
Val had a major growth spurt between season one and season two... and I am factoring in the high heels.
They don't make shows like this anymore
Elton John actually has a song called One Day At A time.
Thanks
If you're looking for another quick song, in the episode David's New Job part 2, Mack and Valerie do a quick parody of Here Comes The Bride
Little bit of a continuity issue: who is playing the piano once Barbara walks away from it?
Lol. In the episode she and her sister are teenage girls and their apartment building are doing a charity concert for an old folks home. It's just for play!!😄!! It's actually a theme in the 9 seasons of the show. Every year they do a variety show for the senior home! Xoxo
Also if you see in the back at around 1:09 there's a live band and the pianist is visible 😉
Mu husband would say it's in the script
More than that, once she walks away from the piano it disappears.
As do the watching seniors stage right other than that one woman sitting in the chair bored to death.
Damn she can dance!
Valerie did a great Elton. Haha
To a Tee...facial expressions and everything!😎✌🏾
Jerry Perenchio, Norman Lear's business partner in TAT and Embassy, was partly responsible for bringing Elton John to the United States.
Attmay wow interesting! thank you!
I never knew that. Thanx for the info.
🤘🤘🤘
I never saw this episode but they put Valetie dressed up like that in the opening credits.
They did a good job
Looks like a set from Hot in Cleveland
Even with platform shoes Valerie is shorter than McKenzie. 🤣
I wonder what John Phillips thought of his daughter's performance.
he probably was too stoned to notice or care.
@@su-rv2uq Lmao
He's in hell where be belongs
What about bonnie franklins performance
was that the one where she did the Raggedy Ann "on the good ship lollypop?" or was that another clip?
@@swampwitch6133 yes,,what legs she had
I know he was proud
Valerie Bertinelli In “Rocketman”
Do you know Valerie idol is Elton John
I was a kid watching reruns in the late 70's and when I saw this episode and Barbra Cooper as Elton John I was living. Signs of a homosexual.
So cool!
Imagine if they did this with the new season
@John Johnson lol I'm referring to season 4 of the reboot
that reboot is crap it doesn't have the chemistry the original had it's just a piece of shit the media selling to a market that most of the younger people haven't seen the original and know what good actually is.
Do you know who Mackenzie's father is? Lol of she's got talent. Shes been around musicians all her life.
We throw there keys away lol
Mackenzie Phillips sang in a Disney channel tv series so weird
😊
Sisters
Mrs. Van Halen!
Wow - sux just as much as i remember
This is one of the strangest things I've ever seen
Better than the Kardashians
This was fantastic girls! But here's the original artist in all his glory. Funny, I always thought he was into men:
ua-cam.com/video/cCM2ArKVdOo/v-deo.html
14 dislikes from the gay men who didn't have a crush on Valerie back in the day.
Valerie Bertinellii is gorgeous😁👍
I know I’m in the minority here, but neither of them have a great voice. It’s a cute duet for the show, but they both sound off key.
It may be due to the low quality, this clip is a tv rip episode. I’ve been meaning to rip it and their other songs from the show in better quality myself from my own personal boxset. This is motivational reminder! Thank you! I would also like to recommend you checking out the iconic performance Elton and Keke Dee did together. Mack hits all her notes just like Keke to my ears. Val sings the male part, as a teenager. Lol. It was meant to be comedic in the episode too, as Val was miming piano and wasn’t a professional singer like Mack. Valerie chose the song because She was (and still is) a huge Elton fan. Also these two girls were at the height of their fame at the time and were two of America’s Sweethearts at that time. So, even if they truly bombed it, I doubt anyone would have even minded at the time lol. Mackenzie Phillips has loads of songs on UA-cam. Check out her stuff from Disney’s So Weird (now streaming on Disney+). You won’t be disappointed! 🫶🏽❤️🔥
