Greetings, this is Francisco. That was a tough match for me. Thom played very well with the Lannisters. Losing my Cavaliers so early was a critical blow for me. I need more practice with the She Bears. Great video though, I really enjoyed that.
I'm just here playing checkers and everyone else is playing chess... Great battle report. Funny hearing Imperial Mini's and Hobo Whisperer in the background. Thank you for sharing and thanks for the players for letting the battle filmed and shared.
Just watched, when Thom declared a retreat near the end on the swordsmen and then rolled but then changed it to the crossbows that’s illegal by far as he declared and then rolled for swords, then changed it to Xbows
Fantastic game, some of the best Lannister play I’ve seen in a long time. At 1:06-ish the Stark player forgot about the Greataxes’ Unyielding, which would’ve required a 3 on the casualty die to take wounds on the last rank (he rolled a 1). Who knows if it would’ve made that big a difference though.
I totally forgot about that Unyielding ability, and should have called that out in a rules correction pop up. Thanks for spotting that and calling it out. I can attest that Thom is indeed a tough and skilled Lannister player. I played him in a later round of the tournament.
I disliked how Thom would periodically roll his dice into his hand. If you're worried about your dice rolling all over the place, bring a tray to roll in, but obscuring your dice should never happen, even in friendly games with people you know very well (and maybe even trust.)
Also stark player had xbows to 4 lives and could’ve struck again with the wolf but then used cat on the cards.. Lannister player took bags and healed them up, huge missed opportunity
Fun game, but they are playing Dark Wings Dark Words wrong. You always maintain two reserve and two active cards. If you replace an active with a reserve you also bring in another reserve card. If you go through all the cards you reshuffle the deck and keep going.
Yes, the players were pretty unfamiliar with this game mode and we’re not paying close attention to the game mode rules. This made it pretty difficult for me (viewing and editing the game after-the-fact) to figure out which missions were active and which were reserve. It seemed like there were times when there was either only one reserve mission or no reserve missions at all. Sorry for the confusion, but hopefully the game was enjoyable nonetheless!
Thom here. We checked with the tournament's rules officials because I THOUGHT the way you're describing is how we should play Dark Wings. However, the rules say ‘‘Discard 1 Active Mission and replace it with a Reserve Mission, or discard 1 Reserve Mission, drawing a new Reserve Mission from the deck.’’ So, early in the game, I discarded an active mission, replacing it with a reserve mission. I then discarded an active mission, replacing it with a reserve mission. There isn't text in the mission that says "whenever there are less than two reserve missions, add a new reserve mission." and the rule for adding more reserve missions normally says "Beginning on Round 3, at the start of each Round, discard the 2 Active Missions and replace them with the 2 Reserve Missions", so it created a situation where we just didn't have reserve missions for a long time. A part was cut out of the beginning of this where we confirmed that it was really the case and the way we were supposed to be playing because it felt off, but reading it now I stand by it. I would rather play the mission the way you're describing, but reading it now to get these quotes, I'm not seeing any wording that pulls new reserve missions when you discard an active mission.
@@thomwithanh2740 it was vlear you asked the TO, and TO ruling is law for a given event. In this case it was incorrect, atleast based on how the broader community plays the mission, including at larger events (including one's run by CMON). You always maintain 2 reserve and 2 active cards. If you get through the deck you shuffle the cards and keep going. It isn't made explicitly clear in the document so is a fair mistake.
@@obyiscushobbyandgaming Fair enough. It was my first time playing the mission and my first tournament. If that's how CMON wants the mission run, they should release a FAQ/Errata/Update, though. I can't read intent while trying to play a game in a time limit.
Thanks for the comments Thom. Your pre-game discussion of the game mode didn’t make it off the cutting room floor unfortunately. It would have provided some context to the way the game mode was played, but in the interest of time, I try to cut out as much discussion and banter as possible. I probably cut less out of this game than any other game I’ve filmed, which is a testament to you and Francisco’s decisive actions and respect for the time limit. In my own games, I definitely end up having to cut out several long segments of me thinking through moves for a minute or two.
Seems like an unfair game to the Starks. He relied on his counterpart in the rules and missions as a novice in the game. And his Lannister counterpart did not help him much. Well, good lesson to the novice to learn rules and missions himself!
This game was at a local tournament. In a tournament setting, unless one player is absolutely running away with the game, I wouldn’t give my opponent tips and help prevent them from making mistakes. The assumption is that when you participate in a tournament, you are ready to play the game unassisted and can’t depend on anyone helping you out. I think both players had a good game and walked away happy.
Alot of misplays and mistakes happening in that game. The Lannister player left a slight sourness in my mouth, changing his counter placements and swapping activaiton after activations. I wasn't impressed with his playstyles, especially in a tournament setting. I would have refused every single swap/change/alteration and let him learn from his mistakes. Also his lack of rules knowledge was glaring for sure.
This was a pretty casual local tournament with a lot of new or newer players. I played an unrecorded game versus Thom, the Lannister player, and didn’t consider any of the things you mentioned to be ill-intentioned or malicious in nature. There’s also a certain degree of nervousness that comes with being filmed during a tournament game which is already, by its nature, a stressful situation.

Thanks again for letting me film your match Francisco. Good game!

Thanks buddy! It’s a nice change to be a background player once in a while!

@16:52 you can March and pivot through your own units FYI
That’s right, thanks for the clarification!

When you attack the Mountain, there is no kill like overkill ;-D

at 18:17, lannister crossbows rolled a 1-6 on 6 dice. :D
That should be some kind of epic critical insta-unit-kill. 😆
did u forget to use predictible manuvers un round 1 or i missed something?
I didn't want to waste it.
Huge mistake from the Lannister player turn 4 when he forgot playing swords and played the bags losing his cavalry !
Yes, I don’t think he was anticipating the Greataxes would cause such damage to the knights when they took the Swords!
I was more worried about him healing on the top flank than I was worried about losing the bottom flank at the time.
