Neutral Unit Tier List - Brotherhood Without Banners - ASOIAF - A Song of Ice and Fire
Welcome to this second special topic Tier List video, where we will build a Tier List of Neutral Combat and Non-Combat units within the Brotherhood Without Banners faction. This video aims to rank the Neutral combat and non-combat units based on their suitability in Brotherhood armies. Let me know in the comments if you disagree on any of my rankings! I may very well have missed some important uses or synergies for some of these units, while my rose-colored, elephant-loving goggles may have blinded me to the weakness of some highly rated units. Let me know!

How safe are the washes? I’ve always wanted to try them out but I don’t want to poison myself
I think as long as you don't splash your hands with them for extended periods of time, you should be fine. And use them in a well ventilated area. I use enamel washes, but there are also oil washes that serve the same purpose. Oil washes may be "safer", but I am not certain.
new sub, keep up the good work
Thanks for the support, glad you’re here!
Good video. I am still pretty new to the game and exploring all the factions and neutrals is one I never looked at. I primarily play Greyjoy and this is the first time I've seen the Lysene Sellwords. They look amazing! 5 points for crit blow AND all the pillage bonuses? Why do you say they have no place in Greyjoy?
Welcome to the game. Greyjoys are one of my favorite factions. I said the Lysene Sellswords don’t really have a place in Greyjoys because most of the Greyjoys’ impactful tactics cards and abilities ( like Divide the Spoils, Drowned Men’s Blessing, etc) require the unit to be a “Greyjoy unit”. And there are no attachments that grant Greyjoy affiliation. So the Sellswords, while being pirates, can never be Greyjoys. So their pillage ability will always be distinct from the Greyjoys’ pillage abilities and not have any real synergy with each other. It didn’t used to be such a jarring separation, but was made so in recent patches unfortunately.
@@imperialminis857 Thanks for the clarification.
It's funny, I was sort of thinking of a similar tier list to this last night. But what if we had a tier list for neutral NCUs and or units for the factions in general. Like I bet Shae, Peter, and Varys are all pretty good. But what about the others? So I'm happy to see this video lol
A Tier List of Neutrals overall would definitely look quite a bit different. I think the NCU rankings would more or less be the same, but the combat units would shift around quite a bit. It would be hard to offer detailed analysis though with so many factions to consider. Due to having so many factions to consider, I’m guessing there would be more units in the C category than in the B category, and that the A and S picks would be quite different. Might be an interesting topic to explore!
I would say bloody mummers are c tier.... peasants do the same thing for 4 points. But as always, I love the content
I really feel that Bloody Mummer Skirmisher are a little undervalued! I know exactly what you relate to, but I want them to work, so I tried some attachments and with some practice you can make them work!
@@HitsAndCritsI Could be 💯 wrong after seeing Boltons use them effectively at nationals?

Thank you very much for this series. It would be a pity if would not continue it. You have a scientific approach to it, which imho is very good. I am personally looking forward to the continuation of this series.
Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you enjoyed the series. I’ll give the Commander Series a test run and see how it goes! Stay tuned.
Please please do faction by faction commander tactics. It's so helpful to know! Also you forgot to do House Arryn.
Thanks for the feedback. House Arryn isn’t in the game yet but there’s long been hope it’ll be added some day! Maybe the next major faction?
The beserkers are are good unit but a boring sculpt for wild and crazy beserkers. They look more like grumpy walmart staff in the hardware dept.
The original sculpts are definitely low-energy looking. Do you think the newer sculpts are also lame?
Great as usual man.
Thank you for this Series! Love the Boltons Flavour! And the Brotherhood!
Time to imagine a battle report / Bolton Vs noBanner
Could be pretty brutal, *but* if the dice go the way of Boltons and the Brotherhood aren’t passing their panic and morale checks, some of the power of their army and abilities will deflate quite a bit. Even if that was the case though, the Bolton player would still have a steep climb ahead of them.
@@imperialminis857 catelyn wants that rapport
I’m sure I speak for a lot of your fans when I say I’d love to see more commander videos. Great work as always!
Thanks for the feedback! Perhaps I’ll work on a Stark or Stark / Lannister video and see how it turns out. I already started prepping some Stark assets, as you could see from the preview in this video. 👍
Personally I am very annoyed with c'mon for not fixing boltons... It's not that hard.... give them Bolton only versions of the neutrals they have in faction oh wait that exists... give them back the old flayed men so they have a hard hitting unit. fix the tactics deck, mainly by just remove the conflicting prerequisites from the existing tactics cards. Possibly remove another set of conditions from other card to get it back down to less than 30% of tactics cards requiring conditions. Boltons are only in a bad spot because of laziness within cmon. I don't want top tier, i don't even care if we are toward the bottom... what I don't like is the lazy skornergy from a team that simply does not seem to care about fixing their screw ups.
Yeah, I totally agree. The tactics deck needs some work, resolving some of the issues I address in the video. And I completely agree that Bolton in-house units need to be slightly better than their neutral counterparts. Those two things would go a long way toward making them better.
A potential player interested in getting the Bolton faction box (mainly due to the books, but Ramsey can still die in a tar pit) here. So, if I understand correctly, the neutral versions of the Boltons, such as Cutthroats, Flayed Med etc. have better cards/stats than the dedicated ones for the faction, or am I simply confused? I cannot comment on the cards, as I have not played, but not making the dedicated faction version of a unit better than its neutral counterpart seems incredibly haphazard. Still, I will probably pick it up (I love the models and can use them for other games as well), but that feels like poor design from the start
@patricksundqvist1154 The neutral versions of the Bolton units are currently identical to their Bolton in-faction versions. There are two units: Dreadfort Archers and Dreadfort Spearmen, that are unique to the Bolton faction and are not available to other factions as neutral units. I believe I was commenting on the fact that the “neutral” Bolton units were balanced with ALL other factions in mind since they can be taken in every faction (aside from Free Folk), so those units feel like they could use a little something extra to make them more special in their home faction. Nothing much, just a slight stay tweak here or there, or a new faction-wide rule that helps all units in the faction. It’s a super fun and cool faction, but still needs some development and balancing work to compete at the level that the Brotherhood is expected to.
@@imperialminis857 Thank you for the clarification! I agree with you about adding something extra for flavour and uniqueness. Perhaps more panic or dmg effects? From other experiences, I can understand that the Brotherhood will be more competitive from the get-go. Bolton was the test and all the mistakes they made upon that release have mostly been erased with the next release.
@patricksundqvist1154 Yeah I think Boltons suffered from being a proof-of-concept for the mini-faction product idea. There are many ways the Boltons could be boosted in power level. Some type of extra panicked token synergy, adding one Lannister OR Stark unit to their armies, etc. Lots of paths they could take to improve the faction.
Man, putting these two back to back, really can tell how Bolton's were the first test mini faction, while BwB came later. Definitely feels like the Brotherhood gained more from the experience, their cards coming together nicer. As a Bolton fan and player, hopefully they get another look next update. The season 5 changes were like... the first step in the right direction. I feel like if they made the tactics cards less conditional and more universal that would provide a nice boost.
I suppose that if the Stark/Bara inclusion in Brotherhood works out well, perhaps the devs will do something similar, with Stark/Lann in Boltons at some point. The tactics deck needs some work too. The Boltons definitely feel like the proof-of-concept, but the Brotherhood already feel like they’ve fine-tuned the formula. But now we’re still left with the prototype in a sub-standard state. 😄
Yes been thinking that they are gonna do potentially more of these allies, foes, shifting alliances sort of things. Excited. Roose was best lannister commander for a while there anyways. Thanks for content
In my personal opinion, commander roose is almost unusable. If you don’t draw any of his cards, you don’t get access to the tokens that you’re faction needs to do its job. Plus, his NCU version is such an auto include for the faction. I feel gimped without it.
Really? I always found him to be the safe, if not very splashy, choice. He’s more of a strategic, less aggro style pick. But I totally agree about losing out on Roose NCU. Having those on-demand panic tokens is huge in this faction.
Just got over 1700 with Boltons hell yeah
A mean feat, congrats!
Great video! could you also make a version with neutral units?
Thanks, I’m glad you enjoyed it! I’ve had a couple of requests for a Neutral video, so I might do a follow up video covering Neutrals in the next couple weeks.
So after watching some videos and reviews, I bought some Starks, I was really worried that I was a secret Baratheons guy as they seemed to have my attention too, but after watching these videos, it looks like I'm really a closet Greyjoys dude. 😂 Great videos, I wish I'd seen these 3 weeks and £150 ago 😅
Ha! Well, thankfully there are often players looking to swap factions so perhaps you can find someone semi-locally who will trade you their Greyjoys. But if not, you’ll at least have a good idea of your next target faction! Greyjoys are a ton of fun, and I’m glad you enjoyed the video.
@imperialminis857 I feel like I need to ride these Starks at least once before binning them hahaha. I love the video, as a brand new player, this is the content I have been looking for. Thanks again for all you do for the community
@matthewmutton Definitely give them a go or two before changing your mind about them. Thanks for the kind words. Your comment speaks to the reason I started producing Song content: to build interest in the game and help foster a sense of community, in whatever small way I can.
27:45 Bara Halbediers could be excellent with Catelyn commander… you really don’t want to charge into her… Taunt!
That’s definitely an unappealing target to charge into and a good way to get tokens out there!
Is there a Neutral units video in the works? Be keen to see yow the brotherhood can synergise with some neutral units
I haven’t started putting that together yet. Neutrals are a bit weird. There are some good and decent options for sure, but any list that takes Stoneheart commander or NCU can’t take any Boltons, and that’s four neutral units right there. I might do a neutral video down the line and lump in a neutral commander review in Brotherhood in the same video.
@@imperialminis857 I look forward to it. I enjoy speculating over what may be good in an army build and having someone else's brain to pick is also great. Before this video came out I was only really considering 3 out for 30 combat units for the BwB until I fully considered the synergies
@MegaArmyCadet123 there are so many synergies to consider. I didn’t think of many of them until I was sitting down to produce this video, thinking about each individual unit in depth.
Super excited about this video! Would love to hear peoples take on their includes for events. Im gonna go all in on this faction when it comes out and would love to pick your brain about this faction :)
Be sure to check out Hits & Crits faction review video for Brotherhood. I join that video to discuss my thoughts as well. The video is a good overview of the faction. In Part Three of my faction identity video series, I’ll cover Brotherhood, so stay tuned!
This 2 now 3 part series is really cool. As a newer player trying to absorb as much information as possible about everything in this game, this helps a lot. I'd love to see either another series, or additional videos in this one, detailing all of the specific commanders and their cards, since they can double down on certain aspects of a faction or shake them up completely and which ones are most viable to pull off such a shake up or which ones need to be more doubled down in.
I’m glad you found this useful! I’ve thought about doing a commander series and may very well do a separate commander series. Due to the amount of extra cards in each faction for all the commanders, I might only be able to cover one or two factions in each video. Stay tuned for Part Three of this series though, because I’ll cover the three Bolton and Brotherhood factions in that video along with the base decks.
@@imperialminis857 will do. You and Hits and Crits, who I've seen you collab with before, have been super helpful. I don't know how I hadn't subbed before but I def will now. Would love to see what else you can put out for the aid of players!
Karstark Spearmen with Thoros Attachment is tough to face, if you need something that needs to survive these will be it. Its like a lesser Vets of NW with Watch Captain, they don't belong in D. But you aren't going out of your way to spend your ally slot on a 5pts Unit. Greta video :)
That’s an interesting use I hadn’t thought about. But then I guess it comes back to the opportunity cost question that you bring up: is it worth spending your Stark/Bara allowance on this unit? Probably not.
So what we learn from this is: tully cav or just use baratheon since they are way better in everything except heavy cav 😬
Well, in the S and A tiers together, there are 4 Stark units to 5 Baratheon units. I think the Baratheon units definitely have some distinct synergies with BwB in ways many Stark units do not.
Great video as always randell! My only disagreement is I don't think the winterfell gaurds quite make it to Ac tier, but perhaps there are some synergies I haven't considered
“S” tier? Does S come before A in the alphabet?
No, it’s just a tier list thing. S is the top. I don’t know why, it’s just a tier list thing. It’s also a tier list thing that red = good and green = bad. I don’t pretend to understand it. 😁
S just stands for super or special, which is better than A or awesome. I believe the tier list originally came from competitive fighting games like smash Brothers and the lingo and tiers coverted over for other tier lists, hope this helps!
@@unknownone5314 that makes sense from a historical perspective, but it’s also really dumb. I guess that makes it very true to life.
@ethantaylor9613 I view it as more of a cultural adoption and somewhat fascinating. It's similar to how certain words catch on as the usage becomes more widespread. I believe the internet is responsible for quicker adoption of certain ideas, even ones that most people wouldn't give a second thought to like a tier list. It has positives and negatives for sure, but it's fascinating in my book.
It’s commonly accepted and understood jargon in the parlance of the gaming world, and has been used in abundance in countless other tier lists, so here it is. In the absence of something more widely known or understood, it’s the best method for getting the point across.
Can you make a video about how thr gane has changed since Years? for example the sworn swords from Kickstarter hot with 8 dices, that was crazy , maybe a video for esch fsction how has changed
That sounds like an interesting idea. It would take a lot of research though since so much has changed. I don’t have first-hand knowledge of the beginning of the game, since I only came to the game shortly after Greyjoys launched. It’s a good idea though and something I’ll add to my list! Thanks for the idea.
I'm a huge fan as well Randy, excellent work.
Of all the potential comments, on all the potential videos, you had to pull this one out of your hat. Please don’t perpetuate the mis-nicknaming of me. I did not consent. 😆
RANDY!!!! RANDELL!!!! LOVE THE THEORY CRAFTING.
Just played a Davos list into Starks and I have to say that I did miss final strike. A great axe charge into my Stag knights dealing 9 wounds while I held crowns and had them vulnerable felt real bad when I had fealty and double parlay in my hand. However Davos was more fun than I expected, Parlay really pulled through and just going PTFO with wardens and champions absolutely saved my ass in that game. I also never thought that Id be able to get wardens into an enemy's deployment but here we are
Davos is such a tempting commander. Fun attachment, some fun cards. But his NCU is good, his unit attachment is good, and Final Strike is amazing. It makes you feel so vulnerable not having Final Strike, even though it is purely a reactive card. I’m glad you had fun with him despite losing our trap card!
I’ve only played against Martells twice, but neither game was that enjoyable. The first game I just rolled right through and crushed them. Not that interesting. Didn’t love it. The second game, the guy was much more familiar with his army (and mine) and successfully Martell’d the shit out of my best units, sucking the rizz right out of them, while their lance cavalry sprinted behind my lines and dicked me down proper. Totally different experience when your units just don’t get to work right for most of the game.
Martells are the ultimate rizz bandits, ruining many an otherwise perfectly laid plan. Your second game experience sounds like the norm for me vs. Martell. A well-designed faction, but not a lot of fun to play against.
@@imperialminis857 I’d say Martell are well-designed thematically and aesthetically within a vacuum, but I don’t know if I believe they are well-designed *mechanically* , relative to their integration into the greater ecosystem of the game. Lannister was previously considered the control faction and that element of their identity seemed very well balanced. Couple things to watch out for, like “Intrigue and Subterfuge”, “Bribery”, and “Counterplot,” but these cards affect different things (NCUs, Units, Card plays), and, with the exception of “Bribery,” for shorter durations (though “Bribery” also offers 2 accessible methods of removal). Combined with their fairly straightforward units that rarely feel overpowered, Lannister control mechanics never felt intense/persistent enough to approach NPE levels imo. They are still fun to play against, despite their ability to hinder some of your plays. This was enough control theme for the game, and it belonged to Lannisters. Then Martells come along and their control mechanics do seem oppressive enough at times to step over the line into NPE territory. A few of their cards like “Unbowed..”, “Rhoynish Vengeance” and “Rising Temperatures” can all stack on enemy combat units, and since there are two copies of each in the deck, and the typical army is only 4 or 5 combat units, that’s a *lot* of debuffing. Additionally, one of these cards can’t be removed, and the other two can only be removed by one method: targeting the affected unit with the attack zone. So you’ll inevitably end up playing with a unit or two you payed 7+ points for, performing more like a 4pt unit for multiple rounds. No one is going to enjoy their elite units sucking for a large portion of the game. That’s not really fun for most people. So ultimately, if we’re operating under the supposition that the game should be fun, and the Martell schtick is the opposite of fun, then I’m not convinced they are well-designed. Alright, I’ve said my piece.
@TheMannis If ASOIAF University was a thing, you could turn that in and earn your PhD in Song’ology. I agree with you. It’s like the devs went hog wild with ways to pi$$ off your opponent as a Martell player. The faction isn’t brokenly powerful, but it is definitely brokenly un-fun to play against.
@@imperialminis857 lol ASOIAF university. Im pretty sure something like that was attempted and failed in short order. Maybe everyone realized it’s enough we’re all 30 somethings still playing tabletop games. As for me, maybe it’s a case of “those who can’t do, teach” lol
@@TheMannisThe Martells when played well make their opponents annoyed. I always joke that as a Martell player you need to make sure to be super friendly and jokey to make your opponent's experience as enjoyable as possible...because your army will be trying to ruin their fun.
I've had Victarion Greyjoy respawn in a unit of silenced men behind a unit of Thorn watch. My activation I put Olenna on the crowns as I couldn't run them away due to holding the objective in ADWD. Vic Charges them, 8 hits, 8 wounds, failed panic for 3 additional wounds. Should've seen my opponents face when I slapped final strike down and dealt 11 wounds back to him then hit him with sustained assault on my activation just to make sure I finished Vic off again 😂😂😂
Oof! Nothing sweeter than a massive Final Strike after your opponent thinks they’ve knocked you out. That’s a dream Final Strike. Classic Baratheon move.
@@imperialminis857 it was the only thing truly saving my hide that day. Was an absolute dream hand of cards. I doubt I'll ever receive such a hand ever again
@MegaArmyCadet123 It’s dream plays like that one that make this game so great. It could definitely happen again. That’s part of the soft-control of Final Strike. Your opponent has to think about the fact that you *might* have it in your hand. ;)
I am new to Martell and this is truly helpful. Thanks man !
I’m glad you found it helpful!
I love your videos!! ❤❤❤ Pls make more showing targaryen dothrakis vs diferents enemies!
Thanks! I’ll try to work in a Dothraki game into a future battle report.
Ugh... what I take away from this is I should playing targ if I want to troll my meta... I do enjoy my greyjoys but the lack of grotesque movement shenanigans is frustrating.
Targ definitely have lots of movement tricks, both in their tactics cards and in their NCUs and unit abilities. It’s a thing of beauty (and dread) watching someone skillfully maneuvering dragons around so that they incinerate the enemy without ever being in much danger of counterattack.
@@imperialminis857 borrowed a targ army Monday night, played all 3 Dragons, Unsullied spearmen and mobility ncus. I have come to three conclusions. 1. our local targ player kinda sucks without his drogo crutch. They have a negative take on Dragons. 2. If I was playing competitively I would be picking up targs asap. I am trying to be good and pretend I am a fluffy bunny. 3. People are sleeping on the Dragons. Now I lost the game to our second best Stark player. But It was way too close for a first time pilot of a list and faction. It ended as a one point game. Had 2 rolls gone slightly different it could have been a stark tabling but those damn trackers just wouldn't die, one stand had 3 trackers left standing, an other had 2 and one tully cav on 1 wound. I couldn't believe how fast things were just melting, while creating damned if you do, damned if you don't positioning. Now had he run the double Tully or Tully umbra cav, I think I would have been in trouble. That extra bit of mobility from a second cav unit would take practice to deal with and drogo from what I have seen would probably be the better match up. Edit As I side note, my favorite competitive game style is high mobility glass canon. one of my favorite 40k armies was 8th ed harlequins when they could just break every movement rule and standard charging lane. getting into places that should have been impossible. While dancing on the razors edge of one wrong move and I should lose. (Warmachine retribution, skorne) Outside of competitive I tend to play the bad guys or a joke army. Looking for horde armies or recursion, just something my opponent can feel good about until things start popping back up.
@@imperialminis857so, I borrowed my buddies targs... played all three Dragons, I lost, but it was way closer than it should have been. My take away was this.... if I was playing competitively I would be picking up targ asap. My lack of familiarity made running all three dragons. more of a hindrance than they should have been the lack of experienceand familiarity with them created suboptimal plays. In retrospect two would have been a more stable first game list. The Unsullied Pike men are just kinda rude... Finally I am disappointed with my buddy and his drogo centric play, he never fields more than a single Dragon views them as a liability. What I see is a skill gap and drogo crutch. I honestly wonder what other seen gems have been ignored by our targ player.
@@MadMax-el2el There are more ways to play Targs than just Drogo. I don't play him often at all (to the point that I've never finished painting him or his Bloodriders). The other Targ commanders are much more interesting to me. I think running 3 dragons is a mistake. Two dragons is really the sweet spot. If you're running a two dragon list, you will have enough points left over to bring along a cavalry unit like Screamers or Outriders that will arguably be more durable than a third dragon and be more flexible. I love running dragons in a Marselen list. He can spawn Freedmen to tie up enemy units while the Dragons attack them. He also has Supply Aid as another source of healing for the dragons. And you can take 5pt Dany NCU to give your dragons an extra free attack. You can take 5pt Dany NCU in any non-Dany commander list of course. Queen of Meereen is also good and fun to use. Targ is a very diverse faction and dragons can be very powerful if used right. They're precious but extremely deadly and intimidating for your opponent.
Great Video! Spot on I would say
I wouldn’t say that Martell’s are technically overpowered, even, but fighting them feels like a panic attack every time.
Every action you take playing Martells is a game of, "Now, how is the decision I'm about to make going to blow up in my face?". In one of my earlier battle reports vs. Martells, my opponent played four or five tactics cards against me during the course of just one charge action by one of my units.
@@imperialminis857 yeah there’s a point at which the over/under of wins to losses is less of a factor than human sanity lost
Martells feel annoying to playbagainst because they are focused on preventing their opponent from doing what they want, rather than the normal course of buffing yourself or promoting what you want to do

Great summary. Thanks for doing. As a new player greatly appreciated.
Thanks for the feedback, I’m glad you got something out of it!
I find the lack of diversity in the stark deck a big negative point, i think some cards should be change to do something else other than attacking, attacking, attacking. And relying on the “1 rank mechanic” is too situational in my opinion
Personally I would want them to have something like battle endurance as part of their deck but yeah I do agree the one rank remaining is situational and also living on the edge when you're down to less than four wounds
Cant wait for Part 2 especially with the Targaryens!
I consider myself a new player. It helps a lot to get a quick overview. The format of about 8-10 minutes for a faction is good place.
Thanks for the feedback! I might try to speed things along a little more in the next video. I feel like this one ran a little bit long. I’m glad you found it useful!
@@imperialminis857 If you can get all the information into the format in less time, that would be cool. From my perspective, your comments, categories and experiences are more interesting. If you cut that part too short, I could read the cards myself. In short: in my opinion the video is long enough and in a good spot.
Some quick notes for Lannisters: 1. It's the kind of faction no one likes to play against. You never go into the fair honorable combat with Lannisters, they will always have some sort of trick up their sleeve to disrupt your plans and cancel your cards. So it's fine to be salty against Lannisters as a faction (just don't mix it up with the player behind the scenes) 2. Playing Lannisters means playing your opponent. Your own deck doesn't really contribute to combat, so you need to play on a strategy level rather than a tactical level. Know your opponent's deck, and the abilities of all of their NCUs and units, understand when and how you should disrupt their synergies, and what you need to counter. Because of that Lannisters are one of the more difficult factions for a starting player. 3. After a year-ish of playing Lannisters I decided that I needed a second faction and I bought some Starks. The game itself opened for me in a very different way, switching my focus from a strategy approach to a tactical one, worrying about outmaneuvering my opponents and attacking them from unexpected angles. Hopefully, after i finesse both of these approaches i will become a decent song player :D
Hint. Proxy neutrals. If you can win with consistently with neutrals you can win with anything. Now... I don't recommend buying a neutrals force unless that is really your thing... simply because c'mon treats them like oliver and there is no extra bowl of gruel.
I confirme, very great job! I’m waiting for second part Would be great and very usefull ( for new players and also expert ones ) a review about commander tactics cards!
I’ll consider doing a follow-up video showcasing the commanders. It might have to just focus on the card categories though and skip the explanations of each card, since that video could take forever otherwise. I could do one such video for each faction, and go in depth, but I think a quicker video with multiple factions (like this one) might be more useful.
@@imperialminis857 Yeeah, I agree. You could skip the explanation of each individual card and just focus on the commander's style of play and on the categories each card has
