Jeffery Combs is one of the most underrated actors ever. He’s great in everything he does.
Except he's not. Everyone who works with him sings his praises. His character of Weyoun on DS9 was only supposed to be a single episode at the end of which he was killed. They loved his performance so much they made the Vorta clones just so they could bring him back. I think he's amazing but so does everyone else which is the exact opposite of underrated.
Definitely underrated in the mainstream. Horror fans have praised him for decades. You can always count on Combs to give a wild performance.
Unfortunately he's kind of a jerk in real life. Met him at a horror convention once. He chatted with me and my friend for a couple of minutes, where he was pleasant enough, and then we got his autograph (he charged $20), but then he completely ignored us like we didn't exist. Most of the other actors we talked to would continue to chat with us after we got an autograph or purchased merch, or even if we didn't. It seems Combs was just there for a quick buck.
You're on a slippery slope of GREAT B movies... specially if you're into HP LOVECRAFT like me... 💥FROM BEYOND 💥...THE UNNAMEABLE... CASTLE FREAK...💥DAGON💥... really good if you like cult classics 👍🤘🔥
Very,very true.
I always had hoped that Jeff Combs and Bruce Campbell would be in a horror movie together. That would have been perfect.
There is a reanimator vs army of darkness comic
Oh my god, it bothers me that I've never thought of that before but that would be amazing.
That’s a movie worth making.
Herbert could raise an army of the dead, Ash could do his groovy thing 🤘
Barbara Crampton is such a phenomenal and lovely person. She completely embraces her work and loves talking with her fans. She's also stunningly beautiful still.
And now she's doing soap operas. Oh, the horror!
@@clarencewalker3925 She was a soap opera actress even before Re-Animator.
6:12 HP Lovecraft directing a movie from beyond the grave is actually very on brand
"Lights, camera, fhtagn!"
@@bhurzumii4315Funniest thing I’ve seen on the ‘net in a long time.
I'm pretty sure that's how we got Hereditary. There's a lot of "The Thing on the Doorstep " & "The Dunwich Horror " in that one.
"From Beyond" now that's a good name for a film ....
Jeffrey Combs has played nine different onscreen roles in the Star Trek universe.
He was so good in DS9
@@thecaptain134And Enterprise
Odds are if you're reading this, you were played by Jeffrey Combs.
He was one of the better parts of Enterprise.
@@briankramme7295 Tucker, Archer and Him, the rest were meh at best.
I love the Re-Animator series. Jeffrey Combs is a phenomenal actor!
He was hoping to keep his experiments a secret but pretty soon the cat was out of the bag 😛
Smartest security guard ever.
Great save by Mrs.Movies with the cushion.🙂👍
The Color Out of Space is Lovecraft
That is such a damn good movie. IMO a modern Lovecraft classic.
So's this, and like _The Colour out of Space_ it's not quite accurate to the original stories, though they're still good (more or less)
There's an audiobook of _Herbert West: Re-Animator_ on here that's actually read by Jeffrey Combs too, it's great. :D
One of the crew members said that 2 gallons of fake blood was the most he had ever used in a film before this one. They used 24 gallons in Re-Animator
All of the Stuart Gordon Lovecraft films are fun. From Beyond and Dagon should definitely be on your list. My favorite Jeffrey Combs role is either this or the agent in "The Frighteners", a goofy film from Peter Jackson...
Frighteners was my first exposure to Combs as a kid (where I thought he was so weird). Now he's my favorite part of the movie. Honestly, Combs is usually the best part of anything he's in 😅
Brain Damage better fits with ReAnimator and From Beyond more. Aestheticly, budget and time wise (the 80s) its close. Even though it's not a Lovecraft story...it has the feel of one. Nore does it have Combs in it either, unfortunately.
Castle Freak is the lesser of the Combs & Crampton led Lovecraft films directed by Stuart Gordon, but still a fun one to watch.
This is one of those films we would rent as kids and pray that our parents wouldn’t walk into the TV room during the “head” scene.
Gives new meaning to the phrase.............And he just made that joke.
I'm so glad that Mrs. Movies is finally getting introduced to Barbara Crampton!!!
Loved her in Beyond Reality
From beyond not beyond reality @rockyshields9122
From beyond @@rockyshields9122
Dagon (2001) is another Lovecraft film by this director.
Sticks more closely to the original story (Shadow Over Innsmouth) than most HP Lovecraft adaptations, and is pretty good for the budget and the occasional '90s level CGI. Worth a watch.
They even call the town "Inboca", boca means mouth in Spanish.
Very true.
_The Shadow over Innsmouth_ and _Dagon_ are two different stories, and the movie _Dagon_ doesn't really adapt either of them. It does however retain the spirit of Lovecraft's stories though, so it's still good. C:
All the performances are spot on for this movie, but it's Jeffrey Coombs who just NAILS it. He walks the razor's edge between serious and comic flawlessly.
Lovecraft is buried behind an East Providence chemical factory I worked at in the mid 90's. I was reading one of his books and a dude told me he was there so on lunch I went by and paid my respects and thanked him for sharing his imagination with us.
A great lovecraftian movie is 'In the Mouth of Madness' with Sam Neill.
We have a reaction to it!
@@YouMeTheMovies question for you both have you reacted Game of Thrones and if you do It would be very interesting to see what your thoughts and reaction are on it
@@Cutiepie-mf4ht we watched game of thrones when it came out years ago
You're watching Re-Animator!!! Stuart Gordon has a trifecta of amazing Lovecraft films: this one, From Beyond (my favorite) and Dagon.
From Beyond and Dagon are amazing!
@@meowenstein agree
King of the Ants is pretty weird.
I've never really appreciated the "bad movies with a cult following". Except for Re-Animator. It just hits my funny bone...always has. So over-the-top ridiculous with the actors all playing it straight. I loved it in the theater in the 80s & still do today. 😁
have you seen Humanoids from the Deep (1980)? might still be free on tubi
Have you watched The Return of the Living Dead in 1985?, if not, I highly recommend it, this film had a huge impact on zombie films
Brrrrraaaaiiiiiinnnnsssss!
Seconding this recommendation, it really is a must-see. At least line it up for Halloween season.
‘85 was a killer year for zombie films.
Linnea Quigley, 'nuff said.
I would have much rather seen a reaction to that than Reanimator.
Close call with the little one coming in! 😂
The Mrs. is correct, this is basically H.P. Lovecraft's take on the Frankenstein story.
The movie is based on Lovecraft's short story Herbert West - Re-Animator (of course, they did a lot of changes in the movie from the novel).
There is an audio book where Jeffrey Combs (Herbert West) reads the story.
And Mr. Movies, you're actually spot on, they actually used the fluids from a glowstick as the serum.
It's non toxic. I mean otherwise they wouldn't have done that If it was.
There are two sequels, plus a 4th movie that was planned, but it sadly got cancelled.
It was gonna be called House of Re-Animator, the plot would have taken place on the White House, William H. Macy was cast as the president & George Wendt as the vice president & not only would Jeffrey Combs have returned & Stuart Gordon returning to direct it, but Bruce Abbott would have returned as Dan Cain & even Barbara Crampton, but this time as the president's wife (my guess is that there would have been a sub plot about Dan starting a relationship with the first lady because she reminds him of Meg from the 1st movie. Which would have been ironic).
There where other planned sequels after the 2nd movie, but they never got off the ground. One of the plots would have been about Herbert West meeting The Old Ones, which is ancient creatures created by Lovecraft. Cthulu is one of them.
"The Power of Love - it's a curious thing" and the sly look into the camera. Gotta love it xD
Poor David Gale, who played Dr. Hill, was horribly embarrassed and apologized to Barbara Crampton in advance for the scene. . .well, you know the one. This film spawned a number of equally gory tongue-in-cheek horror films. I love Jeffrey Combs in all of the movies he did in this canon. Along with the films he did for Stuart Gordon (the producer of this opus) he has had a long and successful career acting in the Star Trek universe.
I just love all the acting. They deserve all the awards, especially the cat. 🙀
Whatever you do, don't ask H.P. Lovecraft what that black cat's name is!
All gamers know his name.
*_As soon as I saw that we were watching The Re-Animator, the first thought to pop into my mind was: “Christi may very well come out TRAUMATIZED from this one!”_* 😅😂🤣
*_Indeed, the score was made on purpose, as an homage, to resemble Psycho’s score. Apparently, it was quite the ordeal to get the orchestra to play the melody which they found counterintuitively changing in rhythms_*
You've got to give her credit for sticking with it. I've known men who hated this movie.
Classic horror film, up there with "Candyman". Jeffrey Combs has played characters from Lovecraft and Poe in several films.
one of my FAV movies of all time!!!
thank you guys! =D
Jeffrey freaking Combs. The best guest star on the Star Trek series, right next to DeLancie.
Herbert West is the definition of a mad scientist
I went to a Halloween party as him in 2022.
Mrs Movies is indeed correct in everything she says with regard to re-animating bodies in the right scientific way as opposed to what this film demonstrates.
In the extended cut of the film, Dan catches West shooting up with his own re-animation fluid. He claims it keeps his brain sharper and more focused.
I remember having a comic book that advertised this movie. Awesome stuff. It may have been an old Punisher comic? Idk. I miss the age when comic books were popular. Going through my older brothers' things brought a lot of nostalgia.
The funny thing is holes in swiss cheese is a fairly recent thing. a few hundred years ago it was considered a defect that led to inferior quality cheese and manufacturers went out of their way to make sure it had no holes in it
such a legend of a movie, absolute classic. best film based on the work of HPL imo.
23:04 that actor is actually Arnold Schwarzenegger’s stand-in (no joke)
Peter Kent, I believe he was his double in Terminator.
There is also a Hans Gruber in the Asylum season of American Horror Story.
Wasn’t that the name of Professor Snape’s character in die hard?
I went over to see Craig on his Sidescrollers channel after watching this, and was like "is something wrong with my UA-cam?" lol. What a nice surprise to see you guys over there.
I got what you did, flew over Mr Movies head! “Power of Love, It’s a curious thing!” Huey Lewis!!
I watched a review of these movies and the takeaway was that Barbara Crampton is utterly fearless as an actress.
I'd love to to see an animated version of Re-ANIMATOR! Great idea Mrs. Movies!
Scanners is AMAZING!
Edited to add: Love you guys.
I do love a channel that appreciates the classics.
This is a crazy movie. The guy who directed it is a legend in the theater world. He ran the Organic theater in Chicago that used to stage sci fi and horror theater productions that would have tons of blood and guts and practical effects onstage. They had a sci fi epic on Broadway called Warp at one point.
Wow, I don't think I've ever seen Mrs. Movies go full Popeye before. Impressive!
Gotta love a horror with a sense of mischief. Notice how they filmed the basement scene with the cat like the pool hall brawl in Mean Streets? lol
An absolute classic. That third act is insanely hilarious 😂
Aw, you guys left out the best quote in the movie lol.
"Who's gonna believe a talking head? Get a job in a sideshow."
You are not an idiot. I didn't know anything about this one . Thanks for all of your coment about this one. Hello again from pa USA 🇺🇸 💖 ❤❤
I have been waiting all week for this.😂
bride of reanimator is defently worth a watch
Yes! Was so happy when I saw this on the schedule. You guys are great!!
I watched this about 18 months ago, i'm about due a re-watch. It appealed to my weird sense of humour. The main reason I watched it is that i love Jeffrey Combs, particularly in Star Trek: DS9.
Weyoun!!!
Yes, all of the Weyoun clones lol, and of course, Brunt from the FCA.
Zurich is actually in Switzerland. Don´t worry, I don´t know where is Oklahoma.
It was after Ms. Movies saw Re-Animator the show changed to “Me and The Movies” 😂
i recommend the reaction to "pet semetary" for that one ;-)
You could never go wrong with 80's Horror with Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator (1985) Such childhood memories. I highly recommend From Beyond (1986) which was based on Lovecraft short story & directed by Stuart Gordon again.
Looking forward to this one!!!
"H.P. Lovecraft. What else has he done that I didn't like?" 🤣 Brutal. However, when it comes to movies based on Lovecraft's works, Stuart Gordon is almost always your go-to guy. Though the recent Nic Cage movie, Colour Out of Space, is a really good one.
42:48 One of my favorite uses of music in a movie ever. By now, we all know what that song means. So hearing it when West isn't on screen is perfect.
His cat had a pretty funny name.
@@funkyweapon1981 it's definitely an unusual name that wouldn't be popular today.
There is a spiritual successor called From Beyond with same actors and same director which is even more bonkers. Scream Queen Barbara Crampton took a hiatus from acting to raise a family, she has come back to more serious acting and is doing very well for herself.
This is one of my favorite movies as a kid in the 80’s! This is so great!
Re-animator is an absolute classic. 3:10 That line is the start of a cool song titled Re-Animator by a Thrash Metal band from Texas called Rigor Mortis. Every time I hear that I can't help but start playing air guitar.
Unfortunately all but one is still living I think. Lead signer and lead guitar died of cancer 😢. Lead guitar Scaccia died in 2012. Lead signer Corbitt died in 2019.
@@0PsychosisMedia0 Yeah, the band's had a lot of bad luck with deaths and illnesses. At least their amazing music lives on and they'll be forever remembered as one of the best thrash metal bands outta TX.
@deludedreality89 corbitt did have another band called Warbeast and the bassist is Beefcake the mighty of GWAR...I had no idea till a few years ago..
OMG!!! I can't believe you're talking over all the on screen location texts!
Jeffrey Combs did the near impossible by making Herbert West both as insane and repellent as he needed to be, yet as intriguing and funny as he needed to be. The only way West can work onscreen at all is if he's very complex, and Combs brings so many details to the role that he seems like a real person. This role would have failed with a lesser actor.
Also huge props to the screenwriters for adapting the old stories into a very strong modern screenplay.
I recommend "From Beyond" as another Lovecraft story adaption.
This is the most underrated horror, franchise of all time, and Herbert West is as iconic as Ash Williams
Barbara Crampton, thank you hehe
So excited. This is my fav horror movie! The second one is awesome too.
If you want something even MORE wtf then I suggest you try to find Dead Alive/Braindead. Directed by Peter Jackson. Yes, that Peter Jackson.
What a non-optimal time for the kid to walk in... 😂
Scarred for life in a single second 😂
I love how Mrs. Movies tries to cover the screen with the pillow 😂
Another great movie! I think I have it on DVD. I know I've seen it anyway. It's one I may buy again and unearth the original copy months later. The movie was shot straight after The Terminator wrapped and re-uses a lot of the sets. Also, the big guy that comes to life at the start was played by Peter Kent, Arnie's stunt double in The Terminator.
The best effect is the Dr Hill headless work. The actor wore a wig so that it matched the one on the fake head. Speaking of head, David Gale (Dr Hill) took his wife to a screening. She saw 'that' scene, screamed "David, how could you!?" and stormed out!
Sooo, a few things:
1. This movie is based on an H.P. Lovecraft story but deviates from it quite a bit.
2. West injects himself with diluted 'ReAgent' so he doesn't have to sleep.
3. The big zombie they brought back was played by Arnold Schwarzenegger's stuntman
4. Originally, Dr. Hill was supposed to have some kind of psychic power, which is why he was able to command the zombies.
4. THAT scene got Hill's actor in major shit with his wife. Pretty sue she divorced him over it.
EDIT: Films based on Lovecraft stories tend to include a LOT of grotesque body horror. So, be ready for that moving forward.
Combs is awesome in every single roll he's played.
Awesome reaction of my favorite movie!!!!😊😊😊😊
fun fact about the actor who played the severed head - his wife left him after watching the movie
Lmao
I want to meet you two so bad y’all seem so down to earth and so kind and funny
Now y'all need to watch Bride of Re-Animator :)
Great movie! Not sure if any remember, this movie was mentioned in American Beauty.
@You, Me, & The Movies :
Was going to write a comment to Mrs Movies, that the Dan character was played by Elias Koteas, but looking on the IMDB page for Re-Animator, it turns out that the name of the actor, is actually Bruce Abbott. But holy shit, that guy looks so much like Elias Koteas in his younger days, it's uncanny. They even sound the same when they talk. Unless one of them changed their name along their career as an actor, as Elias Koteas has no credits on IMDB for Re-Animator, so what I took the long way of saying, is that I was wrong. But back then, as they are actors of the same era and about the same age, they could be twins. And I'm utterly blown away by how much they resemble eachother, but that was back in the 80's and 90's, don't know if that's still true today, though.
This is the Godfather of gore of films
Maybe the Godfather, but not the Grandfather of gory films. That would be Herschel Gordon Lewis with movies like "Blood Feast"" 1963, "2,000 Maniacs" 1964, "Color Me Blood Red" 1965 and "The Gruesome Twosome" in 1967.
@@bobmessier5215 fair enough👊
"nobody wants in, and nobody gets out" 😃
Mr. and Mrs. Movies, you guys are the best 🙂.
I love this movie and the sequel 😊
This movie ranked at #69 in the 100 scariest movie moments on Bravo, cool reaction as always Mr. & Mrs. Movies, how about reacting to From Beyond (1986), you both take care and have a good night
This was a good fun pick
One of my best for story, gore, & helluva score. An old-fashioned frankenstein w/a modern take on it.
The effects still look awesome
This movie is one of my favorites when I was a kid also you 2 r great at this keep it up
The Main Character Jeffery combs is a horror icon.
Another great movie you guys should consider that he is in is The Frighteners (1996). It stars Michael J. Fox in one of his last film rolls, and was directed by Peter Jackson right before he started Lord of the Rings. In fact, the technology he got to film the CGI and special effects for the lord of the rings movie was originally purchased for The Frighteners to animate the Grim Reaper's cloak.
We went as a family (us as kids) at the time to watch Ghostbusters I think, but it was full, so we went into this instead totally unknowing....
This movie is a cult classic. I hope y’all get to the second & third one eventually. The 3rd one is the most hilarious one out of the trilogy imo.
Love this movie.
barbara Crampton is one of the nicest people i have spoken online to, most horror actors are nice people
Another good Lovecraftian movie is Underwater (2020).
Watch From Beyond, same director and also Lovecraft based, as well as starring Jeffery Combs. It is great.
Patrick, always killin it w the picks
You guys should watch Suitable Flesh. It's a recent Lovecraftian film from a lot of the same people that worked on Reanimator. It stars Barbara Crampton and Heather Graham and it's set in the same locations, such as Arkham and Miskatonic University.
Barbara Crampton is one of the nicest people, and she still looks fantastic
One thing about this franchise is I could never tell if Herbert West is the villain or the good guy. He does one thing but then he does another to contradict his evil acts by trying to fix it & trying to help people. It’s always been conflicting & confusing to me. But I love it because of that.
i think i read smewhere that Herbert used the serum to refresh himself thats why he doesnt sleep, but its drive him insane..
Probably the campiest body horror flicks! Shout out to HP Lovecraft.
Mrs. Movies, please don't let unkind comments bother you. You are fantastic and you and your husband make great content together! I am happily newly subscribed and enjoying myself reacting along side you both.
