Hey, some tips for the next time:
1- Monocoque can be lighter if you're using carbon fiber
2- Unless you want something really specific, I'd say it's better to build the engine just picking the materials, then figure out the rest on tuning: Compression, cam profile, harmonic balancer, AFR, Timing, intake size, exhaust manifold size, carburetor size, exhaust size, in the case of a naturally aspirated engine.
3- If you wanna win in these scenarios (Of power being the limit, not cost) you can make the engine out of magnesium and AlSi for their lower weight
4- Engine weight is also key, picking light internals help a lot, billet steel crank, titanium conrods and lightweight forged steel pistons are the way to go (specially because if it's a small engine, you can drop the harmonic balancer's weight and even take it out, for a lighter, more efficient and more responsive engine)
5- Unless you're using a turbo (or a supercharger on an update that is on the way) the quality slider in the aspiration section does nothing
6- Quality sliders, unless you're battling against cost, ram those up to the roof, same as the quality multipliers (the things on the bottom of the quality multipliers that says +5) that'll allow you to use more modern/better materials than what's available at the time (Have in mind that rising the quality slider for safety will increase weight)
7- If you're building a miniature car, my recommendation is to not go below 400Kg, otherwise BeamNG drive can get mad and cause all sorts of issues
8- A turbo can be fun, but it can give you a headache when setting it up (This is prior to the supercharger update, this won't apply to superchargers)
The bigger the turbo, the higher the RPM required to get the full boost, the higher the pressure, the bigger the turbo. Now if you get a spiky mess on the graph, turn down the pressure and work your way up (you don't really need that much boost anyways).
PD: The spiky mess can be due to other things, but mainly due to either too high compression for the fuel used or a really restrictive exhaust. Be sure to always check the airflow parameters to see if there are any bottlenecks.
I guess that's it for now, keep on with the great work!

A large single or dual cylinder turbodiesel with a low RPM limit would work wonders. Could conceivably push 50hp with literal hundreds(?) of lb-ft of torque. Horsepower is torque*rpm/5454 after all, so you can just make an engine that makes great torque and then have your rev limiter right at the 50 hp.

If I had to make any assumptions, the engine was saying it had much more compression than the real VW engine because the fuel you were using had such a higher octane than what the engineers at VW designed for. In case you were previously unaware octane correlates to how much compression you can have before you experience knocking.

    • @dxb338
      @dxb338 3 місяці тому +3

yup. He left 98 RON defaulted, even said something like "this doesn't matter." 98 RON is equivalent to about 93 in US gasoline. Which is mid grade. Regular 87 (US) is too good for a beetle. Not that using high octane gasoline in a low compression engine hurts anything in real life, its just a waste. Which i guess is what the game was trying to warn him about but it's kind of silly that he went back and re-designed the whole engine because of that warning message.

I really enjoy that you're so willing to learn, total respect. The helpful info is below the next paragraph.
To the haters, please research before coming at me or anyone else.
This is not the golden rule, but in most cases:
Longer stroke and smaller bore will give you a lower redline, it will also lower H.P. but for the most part, it will give you higher torque due to the fuel having more time to fully burn, that's just one reason.
Also, backfiring comes from un-burned fuel, Octane is there to prevent premature ignition due to heat in the combustion chamber, i.e... knock or preignition.
Thanks for reading, and please keep doing what you're doing.

    • @moronday6875
      @moronday6875 3 місяці тому +3

Longer stroke gives you more torque because the piston rod is longer, hence the crankpin journals are further away from the main journals on the cranksaft giving it a much better leverage. The burning has not much to do with it, optimally you should always use the right amount of fuel to fully burn during combustion stroke, regardless of the cylinder dimensions. And it does not take more time to burn fuel in a bigger stroke engine, conversely its faster because the flame front has much less distance to travel to the cylinder walls. So in a way, yes it can lead to less unburnt fuel, and a bit more torque but the main advantage is efficiency. More so becouse the area where heat can dissipate is also smaller.

you dont need a lot of gears because the power curve is relatively wide. a lot of gears wont do anything, they wont create any more power. lots of gears are useful for peaky engines.
if you are limited on power, what you want is a flat power curve that stays right below the power limit.

The "size" values on carburetor, intake, and headers is not in mm, it's an arbitrary value with 0 being minimum and 100 being maximum allowed for the bore of the engine. Best to tune your sizes based on the flow graph which can be found on the upper right of the engines tabs.

  • @TheRealHoltzy

It literally said you are running too high an octane. You chose 91 octane unleaded on an engine that was built to run on lower octane LEADED petrol. 91 unleaded weren't even considered yet. After leaded petrol came Freon added fuel before unleaded became widely available in the mid 90's. Higher octane is only required for powerful engines to prevent pre-detonation (knocking). You completely changed the engine instead of that one option. "Quality" setting is for fine tuning for more or less power.

@8:21 yeah those graphs are like deep deep tuning stuff basically it lets you optimize flow to be in the sweet spot for your particular build, to learn how to use a flow bench (which those graphs represent) there is only like 2 places you can really learn how the work one is the flow bench manufacturer the other is a dedicated trade school but i digress, To sum it up the biggest race cams are not always the best for an engine and can in fact loose you power when air is traveling through a tight space it increases in speed adding velocity. However too small and you choke the engine too big and the the air moves slowly causing low rpm performance to suffer as a result, most manufacturers from the factory use lower profile cams to increase low end torque which is more necessary for street driving where you spend more time in lower rpm.

To make bigger torgue and less hp main rule:
Cylinder diameter should be LESS than cylinder length. It is main difference for example between sport bikes and heavy bikes. Between trucks and light cars.
It allows to make longer connecting rods. Which leads to bigger momentum on shaft. And engine will work on lower RPM.

    1. I would have done a small turbodiesel engine for torque and reliability.
    2. Set your materials and parts before fine tuning things. It will allow for more more optimization.
    3. AWD of any sort has more weight than rwd, and doesn't allow for certain suspension types in the front due to the engine/AWD systems taking up too much space. Plus less reliability.

I think two cylinders would be optimal, you want to keep close to 500cc per cylinder, so two cylinders would ideally be one litre, 3cyl = 1.5L, 4cyl=2.0L etc. A1 litre, 2 cylinder might get you over 50 hp, and tuning up a smaller engine is better than tuning down a bigger one, so 0.8L two cylinder, might be the answer, then if you do need more power you have a decision between forced induction or high revs. Forced induction adds weight, whereas you can rev higher by having lighter internals, so given the power limit, id go for low weight and high revs. As for layout, a flat engine helps with both torque and heat, so you might be on the right path there already. Weight over driven wheels is a good thing in this class, prioritise acceleration and traction to make the most of the limited power, so 70% weight over the driven wheels is fine in a low weight, low power car.

There are so many things that you can do to help you build horsepower easily. The charts specially are very useful like for example the flow chart. It tells you what parts are limiting the air flow through the engine. It will show you if the carburetor, intake or exhauts manifold, exhauts, valves(camshaft) and extra stuff like compressor, turbine, or intercooler if u run turbo. The numbers that are shown when u size the carburetors or manifolds hare not the mm size, its just a size multiplier. For now thats some things that i saw that u might need to know for now

Also just as a suggestion, maybe you could try an evolution challenge? Either upgrading the engine or body or something. Maybe making a track version and an offroad version of your cars or something like that. Loving the series.

Rally run, make a hatchback with a realistic engine for, with tests on handling, speed, and of course, a rally race. Idk of any good rally maps from mods, but I imagine someone would. Or, you could build economy cars, 4 door basic cars with no bells and whistles, example being like a ford crown vic, and test them similarly.

at 22:56 you can see what your expected top speed is indicated by the red vertical line wich says 156.8 km/h you want to drop down the top speed until that red line is all the way over to the right to maximise top speed and acceleration, it also wont go any faster than is indicated by the red line so gearing for 200 km/h is kinda useless

Really long intake runners, with very small matched ports, lots of torque, little HP. Also, longer con rods, and large pistons make a lower revving engine with more torque. Stick with 2 valve setup, push rods, and a mid to large 2 barrel carb. Diesel would also give you the benefit of torque greater than HP.

  • @AaroKo

good advice on the displacement, especially for low revving engines, make it an undersquare design so keep your stroke larger than your bore hence higher stroke brings your torque curve lower in the rpm range. that's why for example toyota 7age, honda k24/k20 or b20 frankensteins of builds are made in certain n/a engines. in forced induction engines it isn't that big of a deal because it doesn't really require any special engineering, just adding more boost and fuel

  • @FlorianXXV

you know that all of your problems with the original engine build before tinkering only needed to have lower octane fuel. lower octane fuel is actually more combustible and would have solved his problem without needing to raise compression. lower compression means lower octane.
