As the son of a former opera singer we we wouldn't scare or prank our mother because the ensuing scream was literally painful. Even 10 years after she stopped performing she could still make your ears ring from across the house.
I live neighbor to a former opera singer, soprano, a lady at 85, she premiered her career 1961. Anyway, before the pandemic she used to sing piecies from charactars she has played as active on eldery homes, weddings etc. At one occasion two years ago we and another neighbor were having coffee (Swedish "fika", you can google it nowadays!) at her place. She was telling about her times at different opera houses, and I had never heard her singing and asked if she could sing something, just a short part. She shone up in her face "Oh, of course I can!" She didn't need "sing up" her voice, just cleared her throat. And started to sing, from the death scene in Puccini's La Bohème. I was sittning just opposite to her at the table. Little did I know! 🤣🤣🤣! I think I had a new hair style; slicked back! A face lift, my skin usually covering my cheeks was curled back over my ears. My ears... I LITERALLY had reduced hearing the rest of that day. She sung without a flaw in the pitch, crystal clear. Earlier this summer I heard her singing again. Now she she went to another room and did a couple of "voice strechings" as she calls it. She excused herself, she hadn't sung a note for a year, and should have needed at least 20 minutes warm up, but she sung, not 100 % clear nor in pitch, the latter was because of the stiff vocal cords. Yet VERY impressive, scared the "newbies" 😂 anyway! So yes, if a woman at that age, just singing once in a while, can have that power... No one who hasn't been near an opera singer can IMAGEN!! If she /he is about to sing, I recommend AT LEAST a 2 - 2.5 meters / 10 foot distance! And be prepared for a force!! 😁
Glass breaking for opera singers should be like belts in martial arts. "Oh? You're an opera singer? How many glasses are you?" "I'm a 7th glass soprano"
@AllOuttaBubblegum You don't need to be an Opera Singer to be able to break glass. Mythbusters did the glass-breaking-with-sound myth and they brought in a heavy metal rocker to do it (think Steven Tyler from Aerosmith type singer).
I like that she remained professional, calming touching him, even while laughing at his reaction, then approving when the decided to pull her mic back, but she kept singing, that beautiful voice lifting those that hear it. I realize this is 3 years ago, but she still merits comments and praise. Thx, Sean, for interviewing her and sharing this moment.

Was a vocal performance major in college and my freshman voice teacher was the artist in residence at the University. I had taken voice for sometime, but never with a teacher of his reputation and experience. I remember our first lesson together, I was blown away by his unbelievable resonance. He would demonstrate something for me and when he was done the strings on the grand piano I was standing next to would still be humming because of the power of his voice.
I once met a woman who sang in the chorus of the Metropolitan Opera in New York. I asked her how her voice differed from someone like Barbra Streisand or another broadway singer. She said that singers of that type often have beautiful voices but they do not have the power to fill an opera house. I asked her if this ability was the result of training and she told me that only some singers have voices that are capable of singing that loudly. But in order to achieve their full potential it requires many years of disciplined study and practice. So Elizabeth's beautiful voice is a gift that she has worked hard to develop.
*_"I asked her how her voice differed from someone like Barbra Streisand or another broadway singer"_* Um, you seriously couldn't tell the difference between an opera singer and Barbra Streisand by just listening?
@@oldsocrates Well the reason I asked her was that she was (and is) the only opera singer that I ever met and not too long before Streisand had released an album called "Classical Barbra" where she sang a variety of pieces from the classical repertoire. My recollection was that the album received poor notices from classical reviewers but I thought this would be an opportunity to get the opinion of a genuine professional. She indicated that Streisand's voice was not capable of the power and volume that are required to sing opera. But curiously enough before I wrote this reply I looked up the name of the album. In the Wikipedia entry about it they quoted Leonard Bernstein who spoke very highly of her efforts. Of course that could just be one celebrity praising another. But what surprised me was that Glenn Gould supposedly said "For me, the Streisand voice is one of the natural wonders of the age, an instrument of infinite diversity and timbral resource...Nothing in this album is insensitive or unmusical" And Gould wasn't the type to lavish praise upon the unworthy. But we must remember that this was a studio recording through a microphone. It would be interesting to see if Streisand ever attempted to incorporate any of this material into her live performances. And if she could pull it off without the aid of a microphone. My point was that simply having a pleasing voice and good vocal technique can make someone a good singer. But apparently only certain individuals who have the necessary lung capacity and strength in their diaphragm are able to be heard over an orchestra playing at full volume in an opera house.
I’m pretty sure Tom Jones could fill an opera house. That’s just one example. But what you wrote makes it sound like only opera singers work hard at their craft. Most singers, those that have long careers, work very hard to be able to sing at a high level. Take Tony Bennet., for instance. He practiced 4-6 hours a day, much like the best instrumentalists do. Well, the voice is an instrument after all. Trust me, with all the allergens and other environmental factors that can affect one’s voice these days , a good singer, be they rock, blues, jazz or opera, has to work very hard to keep their voice healthy. They are taught from day 1 to project across an entire theatre and be heard from front row to back, over the sound of an orchestra. It's the genre that needs a microphone, not the singers per se. Professional opera singers also use microphones when singing with the same kinds of instruments and speakers that newer genres do. I too had no idea the power of opera singers until I played a part in Amahl and the Night Visitors stage play. There were three pro opera singers and one of them had "won the Met." I could feel it in my whole body when he was singing back stage to warm up and I was just a few feet away. The other two singers were not far off from him either. It was a fairly profound experience.
@@brockelever lmfao I played for 25 years now and I haven't even heard that excuse either lmfao. I edited this because I re-watched it, he said it because of 0:26, where he explains it was DI and he couldn't hear the guitar. still funny what you said though.
My mom's a contralto who sang Gilbert & Sullivan on the stage for 15 years. I used to accompany her on the piano at home for rehearsal, and I made her stand in the next room so my ears wouldn't ring. And for context, I'm an artillery officer. Don't ever underestimate the power of someone who sings. Especially women.
That's why Rolando Villazón deserves mad respect for taking the full blast of Anna Netrebko's voice straight to his face from about a foot away -- without even flinching.
I heard my first opera singer live at a restaurant. She was a server and it was closing time. As they cleared tables and we sipped our wine, she began singing. I felt like I was hit in the heart with an arrow. It shook me. She was an amateur, so she said. I was crying. It was very impactful. Live is much better than on a recording.
I wouldn't have wanted to meet her, especially if she was single. If I were a manager, I'd ruin her night (i.e. yell at her, write her up). I work at a grocery store. Many co-workers and people are lucky that I'm not a manager.
around 0:20 you can see how much air she is taking into her lungs... what a huge and fast inhalation! Also I just love how, in my humble opinion, she managed no to laugh loud when he was practically obliterated with her powerful singing. What a lovely lovely lady!
Sean, how can you NOT know this song. Its huge.... Well done Elizabeth, I watch you doing Dimash reactions....lol Even the mic was slowly trying to get out of that ....lol
Input channels normally have protection in the form of a compressor or AGC circuit. These take time to act, and the subsequent distortion adds a harshness to the beginning of a loud note. You can drive a dynamic mike into distortion, probably kick drum territory. Condenser mics when over-driven will 'stick' and go silent. Ribbon mics can be damaged by loud, low notes. The ribbon can be blown out. Treat mics with respect and these problems will never arise. Set input levels to sensible numbers (-12dB VU for example) and you won't confuse the input circuitry and ADC's.
I know the problem I studied the basics of singing with a professional opera singer (A Bass) from Scottish Opera chorus and about 12 years later had the pleasure of singing the duet "As Long as You're Mine" from the musical "Wicked" with Broadway and West End star Kerry Ellis. Of course, being a modern electronically amplified concert there was a large sound system including a front of hjouse PA system and onstage monitonitors. To make sure that I didn't damage everbody's hearing I ended up holding the very expensive Shure wireless microphone handset 18 inches to 2 feet away from my mouth!
She's also an absolute nerd gamer larping cosplayer bucket of fun. And with her music reaction videos on UA-cam is turning into quite the metal aficionado and appreciator.
Opera singing was, after all, invented to be heard over a live orchestra in a large theatre, long before microphones. That's also why she says that she does not usually sing with a microphone - you have to change the technique with a microphone.
I've only started watching The Charismatic Voice recently, and I love it, but I have to say, Elizabeth seems like a very intense human being. I thought she was turning it up a bit for her show, but after watching her here, no, I think that's just who she is.
Wow! I've been watching her reaction videos and she is as mesmerizing as the vocalists she is reacting too. I have never heard her sing but her credibility(which was already high) just went up ten fold!
Oh that was good! I've watched Elisabeth's channel for a few months and never heard her sing though she kept saying she was an Opera singer. Then she released her 100k sub video and she belted something out. Wow, that was some vocal power!
"What else can you break". Well, from her comment section, hearts, lotsa hearts. The sadness dripping out of her comment section when she made it clear she was married to an awesome Kilt wearing dude was palpable.
Sean looks a bit confused here when Elizabeth starts singing....I would have fallen in love instantly with her voice (and her)... :-) Opera singers should do this more often, mingle with the crowd, offer to sing along, and then stun the audience !
I just love Elizabeth! her candor and genuine nature so obvious in her reactions is only surpassed by her skill and talent! ..the amount of work that must have gone into developing those skills.. dayum!! Sean, i have to say i've discovered your channel from this clip, after following her for a few months, but i'm very glad i did. You're obviously a very skilled player, but you seem like such a down to earth guy, and the fact that two years later you still reply to some comments to praise Elizabeth says volumes about you, my dude! I am a subscriber to Elizabeth’s channel. She has such a love and appreciation of music and you can see the excitement in her face when she talks about music. And wow! What a powerful voice she has!
I worked for the opera in Honolulu and my job was up in the light booth at the top of the concert hall in back of the audience. One afternoon I was walking up to the booth and one singer was on stage just warming up to an empty house. I was absolutely amazed at how loud she was. There was no sound reinforcement turned on, it was just her voice, and the wonderful acoustics of that concert hall.
I watch her all the time on her channel. She is such a sweetheart.. the first time I heard her sing it totally grabbed my attention. Love her..❤️ As far as what else she can break. I’m sure it’s been a lot of hearts..🤣
this was recommended to my UA-cam randomly! I think the excitement of listening to her voice was bigger that listening to Vivaldi's four seasons contacted by Von Karajan! and of course afterwards subscribed to both artists!
Loved the video! And I, too, was blown away by the power of Elizabeth's voice - it jumped out even though the computer screen! I was fascinated by what you & Elizabeth were saying about the need for an "enemy".- I would say a "worthy opponent" rather than an enemy, & it set me thinking about how grateful I am for the opponents that I have had in my life, both for what they have taught me about myself - and, more importantly, how they have forced me to grow. Thanks for opening up this discussion - it really made me think.
I had UA-cam suggest this one to me, and kind of chuckled at the title. Then I noticed Elizabeth in the thumbnail then HAD to click. I've followed her channel for quite a while, so I knew this was going to be good.
Love this. My son is a Grad-Student in the Opera program at U of Illinois. Alas, he won't be breaking glass since he's a Baritone/Bass. Recently he had to stand in for a Musical Theater singer that was ill. Needless to say, they had to adjust the gain on the microphones for him otherwisehe would've blown their speakers. And, thankfully, he doesn't have to worry about being jumped in an alley. He's 6'6" and weighs 400lbs. He's also a 2x State wrestling qualifier.

Beautiful performance, thank you. I, too, enjoy her musical commentaries of metal/rock stars that I love. I learn so much from her positive appreciation of these artists. She knows her stuff indeed!
I was backstage at some joint in St Louis with a friend picking up his girlfriend after her performance of Sweeney Todd, and the follow-up was an opera performance. Even backstage when the dude belted out that opener, you feel that shit in your KNEES. I always thought they were just singing loudly but no...it is so much more impressive. And man, her voice is so beautiful....I can only imagine what it must have been like right there beside her.
I had a music teacher once she was an educated opera singer from Brasil. She gave us one time a little song. Its really so unbelievable loud it filled the whole room. Was amazing.
I don’t think many people know how powerful a voice opera singers have. I used to work with a colleague who is an opera singer. He was asked to take part in an event that was going to be broadcast, the sound guys asked him to back it off because he was overwhelming the sound equipment.
Hehe your reaction reminds me of a related experience I had way back in kindergarden. Back then one of the staff had the "great" idea, of introducing/exposing all us 5-6 years olds to an opera singer. To inject some culture into us or something. They gathered us all together at the assembly area, where we got a short intro to various arias and shocked some of us to the core. Needless to say it must have been the most reluctant crowd she had ever performed for, most of us were clasping our ears and holding on for dear life. When she was done we all scampered away as fast as we could, to the sound of her beeing very annoyed about how rude we were, and the staff trying to placate her. Took a looong time for me to ever approach and appreciate opera, despite my grandmother having done opera in her youth :-)
I went to a conservatory in high-school for vocal and when I say we where trown on stage and our teachers sat in the back of the hall so we could learn how to project whiles still maintaining good form... shit is hard and should never be unlearned lmao
History repeats itself, this is how Nightwish was born. Tarja voice was so powerful when they started that forced Thuomas create something new to compliment the new sound.
Maybe partly deliberate to give her voice a rest and not wear out her vocal cords. I know most singers avoid getting into long conversations inbetween performances for this reason.

she does a review of one of her own opera performance on stage
She does a review of herself singing opera in an European competition. Don't remember the name of the song though. She is VERY good.
Even opera singers can have neighbors they want to keep
Here's her performance in the finals of the Queen Elisabeth Competition. It's "Martern aller arten" from "The Abduction From the Seraglio". ua-cam.com/video/5UjrWnxEQS8/v-deo.html
She's a vocal coach and vocal critic; hopefully she would be able to sing at least decently.
"What else could you break?"
Hearts! I think would be an obvious answer. You cannot help, but be in awe of a voice as powerful as that. Wow!
Elizabeth is the nicest person on the planet...she didn't tell him to tune his f-ing guitar.
He was just playing in the wrong key I believe.
@@jamesvancam Same difference. :)
He couldn't hear his guitar!
@@gillandianyt3920 I'm not a very good guitar player, but I've never made that excuse!
I knew there was a reason why I fell in love with the charismatic voice Elizabeth Sharov! Wow!
I watch her channel all the time and had no idea she has such a powerful voice
around 0:20 you can see how much air she is taking into her lungs... what a huge and fast inhalation! Also I just love how, in my humble opinion, she managed no to laugh loud when he was practically obliterated with her powerful singing. What a lovely lovely lady!
0:22
Sean, how can you NOT know this song. Its huge....
Well done Elizabeth, I watch you doing Dimash reactions....lol
Even the mic was slowly trying to get out of that ....lol
I love how moving the microphone back made no audio difference
Yup. Though you really wouldn't enjoy the sound if she hadn't moved far away from the mic...
Microphone heard the first note and went like "Urgent life purpose change: I'm now a speaker."
@@ThinkingSpeck my condolences, been there myself too. Sucks.
What a charismatic voice!
Proud of you son
samuraiguitarist thought y’all were related, I should believe in my Self more
Dad, can I sleep over at Ben's house tonight?
@@seandaniel23 This is too cute
Makes sense
Thanks, dad.
She is such a good soul.
the best!
"What else can you break?" asked his self-esteem.
Wow, she has some serious vocal power, and the jedi mind trick, moving the microphone with the power of her mind, out of this world! :)
Aten Ra it was running away from the sound waves 😂😂
::waves hand:: there is no microphone.
@@TheCharismaticVoice 😂
I honestly only ever watched her reaction videos up till now. I'm blown away. What a gorgeous voice!!
He: "What else can you break."
Me: "Hearts, probably."
Most definitly hearts if i remember right she is married ....
@@Rawwbot definitely is. He seems like a really good dude. Lucky
@@Rawwbot Ssshhh!!! Let's pretend she is not! ua-cam.com/video/cdgYC5XCoWI/v-deo.html
I've only started watching The Charismatic Voice recently, and I love it, but I have to say, Elizabeth seems like a very intense human being. I thought she was turning it up a bit for her show, but after watching her here, no, I think that's just who she is.
I could tell from the thumbnail that that’s Elizabeth, “the charismatic voice”. Ha ha I can’t wait to see this one.
That was not the voice I expected to come out of her mouth. That's just incredible
Guitar is in E minor, singer in A minor. I’ll show myself out.
lmfao caught that too.
Be fair though, guitar might as well have been in Am for all he could tell :P
Nowt wrong with playing the V chord
Guitar is in Panic Mode, Singer is in another (and higher) league of her own
don't let the door slam yer ass on the way out ol buddy ol pal
I love watching her reviews and first impression video but getting to hear her sing AWESOME.
Elizabeth is just so beautiful and talented.
Kudos!
Thanks so much for the kind words! Yeah Elizabeth is literally the best :)
I saw the thumbnail and talked to myself: "Wait... Wait... Is this... Elizabeth... From the YT Channel?"
yep same......Only I said "wait is that Arial from The Charismatic Voice" Because she makes faces and looks like she belongs in a live action version of the Little Mermaid. lol
I've been wanting to hear her. Love her channel. She is legit. Well she's always talking about how important support is.. that voice sounded supported. There ya go peeps.
Elizabeth is of the nicest and funniest peoole I found on youtube, one of my favorite suscriptions
I am a subscriber to Elizabeth’s channel. She has such a love and appreciation of music and you can see the excitement in her face when she talks about music. And wow! What a powerful voice she has!
Waaaait a second...I know that charismatic voice!
2:34 "What else can you break?"
Hearts, Sean.... hearts.
Even the mic is like, "Ima be back here a little more."
Hahahahahah
The mic is singing 'baby, don't hurt me / don't hurt me / no more....'
I had no idea you could sing like that. Bravo 💗
Astounded ! I’ve watched her channel and it never occurred to me what she sounded like when she sang. Lots of respect.
I watch her all the time on her channel. She is such a sweetheart.. the first time I heard her sing it totally grabbed my attention. Love her..❤️ As far as what else she can break. I’m sure it’s been a lot of hearts..🤣
So happy to get to hear her voice and opera music even using a microphone
I like to imagine the microphone was walking away on its own, as if to say, “Yeah, I’m not having any part of this. You do you.”
this was recommended to my UA-cam randomly! I think the excitement of listening to her voice was bigger that listening to Vivaldi's four seasons contacted by Von Karajan! and of course afterwards subscribed to both artists!
Thanks so much!
I love Elizabeth! Beautiful, talented, and just a fun chic!
Her voice is just as beautiful as she is, I watched your channel many times but I've never heard Her Singing ,wonderful, Beautiful🙂⚘🤘⚘
Elizabeth is SO ADORABLE
And this is incredible, wow
Loved the video! And I, too, was blown away by the power of Elizabeth's voice - it jumped out even though the computer screen! I was fascinated by what you & Elizabeth were saying about the need for an "enemy".- I would say a "worthy opponent" rather than an enemy, & it set me thinking about how grateful I am for the opponents that I have had in my life, both for what they have taught me about myself - and, more importantly, how they have forced me to grow. Thanks for opening up this discussion - it really made me think.
And note, that power is what you get /after/ she moved a few feet from the mic.
Wow! What an incredible voice. I subbed to her channel not too long ago, she's great!
Love the visual of the mic moving away by itself 😂. The Charismatic Voice is just that❤❤
OMG Elizabeth looks so beautiful! Her hair 🤩
This performance ain't bad either! 🤩 ua-cam.com/video/cdgYC5XCoWI/v-deo.html 🤩
02:33 "What else can you break?" --> your heart!
She's stunning.
She sounded awesome and didn’t expect that strong singing voice after hearing her petit speaking voice.
GOD DAMN!! Her Voice is Powerful! Her Voice hypnotizes us!
She can break a heart for sure 👌🏾💔
I had UA-cam suggest this one to me, and kind of chuckled at the title. Then I noticed Elizabeth in the thumbnail then HAD to click. I've followed her channel for quite a while, so I knew this was going to be good.
“So what else can you break?”
“Hearts.”
Wow what a powerful voice she’s blessed with she sounds wonderful!! I also just found her and subscribe to her channel she’s really talented
Someone in the comments posted a link to ua-cam.com/video/5UjrWnxEQS8/v-deo.html wherein Elizabeth is singing in a competition. I just watched it and 'kapow', my mind is blown! Beautiful performance, thank you. I, too, enjoy her musical commentaries of metal/rock stars that I love. I learn so much from her positive appreciation of these artists. She knows her stuff indeed!
I love her youtube channel. This is the first time I saw her singing. OMG!
I’ve experienced that chocking experience first hand as a young teenager, my reaction was uncontrollable laughter.
She is amazing, I love her facial expressions when she hears songs new to her!
OMG, I love her! I've been watching her channel for a couples years 😊
Hehe your reaction reminds me of a related experience I had way back in kindergarden.
What the hell did the opera singer expect when signing to schoolchildren? What a weirdo
The absolute earth-shattering confidence on her at the beginning when she says "You wanna do this" UFFFFFF
*I cannot describe how loud this was*
That's okay, you're not the one whose wearing headphones.
Thank you!!! This was great. 2 of my favorite UA-cam people :)
Thanks so much for saying so Sandra.
I went to a conservatory in high-school for vocal and when I say we where trown on stage and our teachers sat in the back of the hall so we could learn how to project whiles still maintaining good form... shit is hard and should never be unlearned lmao
Briiliant! I also laughed out loud as the microphone retreated.
I only knew her from her ""reaction" Videos...what a voice!!!
❤By her beautiful voice she surely broke some audience heart.❤
History repeats itself, this is how Nightwish was born. Tarja voice was so powerful when they started that forced Thuomas create something new to compliment the new sound.
As an aspiring deathcore vocalist and follower of her channel I'm dearly in love with her voice oh my world she's brilliant 😍
At 1:14 you realize how silent she is when she speaks compared to when she sings. Amazing!
Maybe partly deliberate to give her voice a rest and not wear out her vocal cords. I know most singers avoid getting into long conversations inbetween performances for this reason.
