- Ever wonder what happens on a ranch over a course of a week? In this four video series I try and show you the day to day life I live as I work on our families ranch. We have the weather to deal with, cows to be fed and watered, sub zero temperatures to deal with and this year, new born calves to watch over. It’s the season of little sleep and lots of stress as we begin our calving season a little early this year and deal with the problems that arise.
Good update and day in the life post Bryan! Your boy sure is growing!! What doesn't get said on these videos is all the pre planning for the "what if's"! Laying out hay early while you have the equipment running and more! Keep warm, moving and posting your videos! Good job, hope the weather cooperates for you!
Thanks! Ellis is growing quick! I watch the weather pretty close this time of year watching for those really cold days and of course the snow. Things have changed alot the last few weeks and it’s been abnormally warm. Hope you are doing good!
Thanks for taking us along 👍
I see your helper sleeping on the job. Not good 😂😂
Haha he’s going to get himself fired if he keeps that up.
You definitely have it a lot worse than us this year. Hope things get better soon for you. I know how much work all that snow is. Take care.
Thanks! It’s actually warmed up here a lot these last couple weeks. It’s close to 40 degrees today
Nice update and as usual great camera work. I get a kick out of the day to day chores and workings of taking care of livestock, we run into the same predicaments sometimes. I'm lucky to have my wife running the gates or wires if I'm putting in round bales or trying to cut one out. We live on a dead-end road but sometimes it seems like a highway when you're trying to get something done that involves crossing the road LoL. You're little helper is growing like a weed hop the new addition to the family is doing well also. Stay safe and take care again great video
Ellis is becoming pretty good company and seems to be getting me interested in things. He still wants to stay in the house with mom alot though. New baby is doing great and is already 10 weeks old now. Good to hear from you!
It’s cold, windy, snowing, hard work and I love it. Coming from a Missouri guy I’d take that winter every year.
I’m really enjoying this series. The only gripe I have is you don’t put out enough videos but I see why with all the work you do.
It would awesome to wake up every day to look out the window to see your view.
Great job. Keep them coming. God bless
Thanks for the comment! I’m glad you have been enjoying them so far. I too wish I could put out more videos but a lot of times even just 1 a week is pushing it for me. I do feel lucky to live in such a beautiful area. The winters make me question why we live here sometimes but I forget about it pretty quick once summer rolls around. I’m hoping to get part 3 out in the morning.
Interesting video. You have challenges daily. Hope it all does not get too tough. I bet with your boy being with you helps even things out.
He’s starting to become pretty good company. He seems to enjoy coming with me more and more as he gets older. Luckily things haven’t been too tough yet this year on us.
That's a very severe storm that is hitting your area. I'm glad you're planning very well, and not out trucking.
Thanks for the major effort in posting these videos. They are really good.
Thanks for the compliment! I’ve had to spend a couple days trucking during the storm but things worked out pretty well. It was a pretty good storm that came through. The wind is what really concerns me more than the snow. Good to hear from you!
Good luck calving Bryan
Thanks! We need it.
Great video Bryan
Thank you!
Good luck, Luthi. Hope the calves fair well. It almost hurts looking at the cold weather.
Thank you we need all the luck we can get! That was a pretty brutal storm that came through here.
Here comes the Star Valley winter we all knew was coming 🥶
Haha it just took awhile to get here. Now it’s feeling like spring again. Think mother nature is just playing with us now.
Morning
Morning! I was expecting to hear from you haha
@@LuthiRanchWY 😁 Todd is sitting on ‘go’ every new video.
Enjoyed the update and have a good week.
Haha thanks! Hope you have a good week also!
Burrr, I am in Washington state worried about flooding…you are definitely a tough rancher…are you still trucking in that weather?
Have you guys been getting a lot of moisture this winter? I’m still driving truck for Old Dominion. I’ve had to chain up a few times this year so far.
Great content...man winter in your side of the world surely makes farming way harder.....here we deal with heat and drought ....but farming stays king irrespective ......
The long winters do make things a little tough around here but it seems like every area has their own unique problems and challenges to overcome. Sorry if I’ve asked you this before but where are you from?
@@LuthiRanchWY No worries mate...I own a beef in South Africa - province Western Cape
Then I have my second farm in our Neighbouring country Namibia where I also farm beef cattle and game farming for hunting.
Interesting! I think I’d rather deal with the cold and snow than the heat and the droughts though. Sounds like you stay plenty busy with everything you have going on. How does game farming work for hunting?
@@LuthiRanchWY Thank mate.....yes game farming is huge here by us...most of our hunting clients are from the USA and Europe .....on my game farm we offer more that 25 species for trophy hunting this also drives and helps with the cost of my cattle especially when things get dry here....feed is very expensive and are sometimes imported from neighbouring South Africa.....ohh yes it seems like the snow at your place can make things a bit tough however Ive been following your channel almost from the beginning and must atmit I would love to have your kind of summers here its looking great man.
Thanks for the continued support! It is hard to beat the summers here, doesn’t get much better than a Star Valley summer. Good luck with all of your work!
🙏💪
👍
Keep it up n will warm up its only 65 in north texas today
It’s been abnormally warm here the last few weeks. It’s around 40 here today. It’s kind of crazy
How are the cows doing they looked happy
They’ve been doing good! The warm weather is melting the snow a little though so things are getting a little wet and sloppy in places. I’m going to have to start laying out some straw.
@LuthiRanchWY well take it easy n watch the football games today
I find it hard to believe you haven’t a full cab on the loader tractor.
Haha I find it hard to believe also. We just use what we have. We have a few things on our wish list that come before a loader tractor with a cab on it. It just takes money right haha
How do you get enough protein to them? What’s the percentage in your hay?
We try to mix in some really good alfalfa bales with our grass hay. A lot of our hay is an Alfalfa/grass mix anyway. These Baleage/Silage bales you see me feeding are usually straight alfalfa also. We’ve got a lot more grass silage bales this year just because we were trying to beat a lot of the rain storms that came through here this summer. I also put out 24% Protein mineral tubs to try and supplement them also. I couldn’t tell you what percentage our hay is we’ve never really tested it.
@@LuthiRanchWY thanks. In Texas we put out hay that tests at 10-12% and supplement accordingly
Do you guys feed much alfalfa down there? We were a dairy farm when I was growing up so we’ve kind of merged a lot of those practices into what we do now with the beef cows.
Is that green baylage you pulled out of that bag? I notice it’s wrapped in a black wrap then a white wrap? Reason I ask we wrap green bales too and we have a individual wrapper that we use white wrap.. is the black wrap better than what white wrap.?
Yes it is Baleage. We baled it up a little dry so it doesn’t really look too much like Baleage/silage. So the bags we stuff it in actually just have different colors on each side. It’s not two separate bags. The outside of the bag is white and the inside of the bag is black. I not sure the exact reason for it. I believe it has something to do with reflecting sun light.
When you wrap green hay your trying to prevent sunlight/air so it creates the right bacteria…. What kind of wrapper are you using to stuff them in the bags?? I’m in western montana and it’s becoming more and more popular to wrap green hay do to long spring and wetter fall…
It’s just a homemade bagger one of our neighbors were building back in the 90’s or 80’s when everyone around here were dairy farmers. I made a video about how we do it. I’ll send you the link if you are interested in watching it

May I ask why you calve in January?
I’m going to do a video on this because I’ve been getting this question a lot lately. These cows I’m calving right now are ones I bought this fall and they just happened to be January calvers. I do normally start calving the first part of February though. The main reason for that is because we have range permits to go up on the National Forest from June 6-October 10 every year. I like my calves to have some size to them before they go up there and try to have all my cows bred back before they leave our ranch too. There’s more to it but that’s the jists of it.
@@LuthiRanchWY thank you for the your reply and explanation. Good luck with the rest of your calving. Keep those little ones sheltered .
Thank you! I will do my best
