  • Another winter storm is hitting the ranch. In this video I show a full day of calving and feeding cows. I try and show the challenges and difficulties that come along with calving this time of year. We use a few different tools to help our newborn calves out from a Roy L Heat calf warmer to colostrum supplements.

      The cold and snow do start wearing on me especially when I’m out in it so much. Luckily the weather is starting to change and warm up a bit.

    Good work on them calves getting them off to a good start is the key for survival and vigor. Yeah l wholeheartedly agree with the low pressure calving thing it did seem like if a storm was coming cows were more apt to go into labor than a high pressure system we also use to notice that cows seemed to milk out cleaner with low pressure around. It is something that a person can get so involved with animals that you notice the changing weather conditions associated with milking and calving. When we quit milking and sold the cows I got a regular job and got out in the rat race it made me miss those days alot and there weren't many days that passed without thinking we had a good life bringing up kids and cows together. My youngest daughter and grandson still have show cows and we have pictures of them with calves and carrying around pet chickens LoL but it was all good. Great video take care and stay safe

      You might have told me in the past but what did you do for work once you sold your cows? It does seem like they calve on the snowy days, or it’s just bad luck haha. It is funny how you notice certain animal behavior when you spend so much time with them.

Did a bit of traveling met some interesting people along the way we also did Foxwoods Casino first biuld-out, quite a ride actually. I was ready to hang it up after thirty years or so now I still play farmer with my grandson's cattle during the summer.

    This may be a very silly question - I live in the suburbs in a place where it doesn't ever snow, and thus have no idea what I'm talking about - does it ever snow enough to snow the calves in (or out of) the shelter? Or do the cows trample it down in front?

    • @LuthiRanchWY
      @LuthiRanchWY  2 місяці тому +2

      The cows keep it pretty well trampled down. But it could happen if we got enough snow and wind. I’ve never had to worry about it though.

      I’ve thought about trying to change things up a bit with my calving. We have a Quonset that we used to use for the dairy cows. I’ve thought about trying to cycle them through there as they calve then kicking them out on the Idaho side after a few days inside. My dads cows are over there though so it hasn’t been an option yet.

    Can you have a "wind block" made for the Northerners that blow in and shred some straw for them to lay down on or is that too costly right now. I have a name for the bottle calf. "Rosco"

    • @LuthiRanchWY
      @LuthiRanchWY  2 місяці тому

      I like that name! I’ve been thinking alot about wind blocks lately also and I’m hoping I’ll have something figured out for next year. I try and keep some straw out there for them but a lot of the time the weather makes it a waste of money to keep it out there for them everyday.
