How I Designed...The Maserati MC12! Ep.6

- Hi All,
In this episode of 'How I Designed...' I will be sketching you through some of my favourite elements on the MC12 while telling you a little bit of how the car came to be. The aim was to create a championship winning race car that wouldn't outshine Ferrari in any way. This is how the MC12 was born. It went on to win multiple GT Championships while also finding itself a devoted cult following which I am immensely proud of.
Hope you enjoy,
Frank.

And that was how one of the greatest Maseratis in history came to existence
I think that we can call it the greatest Maserati in history. I know there are beautiful cars from 50s and earlier but I don't think that they are as significant.
@@ErwinLiszkowicz To be fair it csn be better but this one is so good becuase ut has normal lights and more not to much when it's to much you just feel sick.
@@ErwinLiszkowicz they're insignificant for people who would pick a Chiron over a Ferrari 250 gto. Go watch old maseratis, some of the most beautiful cars in the history
@@ErwinLiszkowicz @R-V0L I wholeheartedly disagree. This Maserati was just an Enzo with a body kit. The Maserati Biturbo might have been a pile of steaming garbage but it was the first twin turbo production car ever. So the biturbo is the most important because it was a real Maserati and I could go on about the 3500gt, the 5000gt, the Ghibli, the Bora, the Merak. All of them were better cars than the MC12 because they're actual Maserati's. This wouldn't be so bad if Ferrari didn't detune the engine just because the MC12 would have have been faster
@@gabrielwhite3890 this car wasn't just a bodykit - even in this video Frank pointed that out, dude.
This car was slaying the competition in GT1. It won 6 driver's championship, 6 team's championships and 2 manufacturer's championships.
Enzo wouldn't have achieved that.
MC12 GT1 had more output, more mechanical and aerodynamical grip, better chassis. Most components were reengineered. MC12 is just a tamer version of GT1 car to homologate the car.
Seeing what you do with a Bic pen and a piece of laser paper blows my mind.
Yep , i fail at the first hurdle by drawing egg shaped wheels :(
@@Silver3ides me too:(
You are a legend, Frank. Thanks for taking the time to share these insightful videos!
I was watching your videos and found Frank's channel, life couldn't be better
sketchmonkey !!! I am a subscriber of yours !!! you are also a legend !
You are a legand
Frank, I can't thank you enough for what you're doing for the world. These videos are incredible. Once you mentioned having some limitations around the door area, I wondered what your "more dramatic" design would've looked like and sure enough, you showed us! It is such a privilege to have the opportunity to watch you work and experience these beautiful designs through your eyes. Thank you again for your contributions to history and for expanding on them through these videos. You are a legend!
Nice comment
This is quickly becoming my favourite UA-cam channel.
"There's not a lot of thinking in one line." Frank, you just grew my world a little bit.
The front end was daring, but ended up re-establishing Maserati's design language in my opinion with function dictating beauty. Thanks for taking us through all of these iconic designs, Frank!
you can not see the back at all... on a car that had no screen...
You not only have outstanding knowledge, but as the way you see the world is enviable.
All I know this man has designed some legendary things and I love it
Am I the only one that gets a delightful feeling as I watch him draw?
In 2022 I'm going to study in a Design university, and I'm focused to be a Automotive Designer.
PS : Your videos inspire me to chase my dreams
I am going to study this too hope we see each other on campus haha 😂 btw which University/ college do you plan attending
@@allanb4680 I'm probably going to study in Portugal, but I'm still deciding where.
How about you?
Make a car where the rear indicators are just polished aluminum concave shapes , maybe even letting hot air out and a powerful red led hidden in that curve illuminating it.
Help!!!!! I want to do the same thing but I suck at drawing bro. 😔
I'm studying automative engineering in Modena and my house is about a kilometer away from the general headquarters of Maserati. Maybe one day we will collaborate. Me creating car engine and you the aesthetics of the car ahahaha
Me: I want to draw! (Goes to art supply store, spends $$$$ on Rotrings and fancy papers), produces doodles.
Frank: I want to draw! (Gets out Bic and printer paper) - Designs flawless Maserati
Beautiful! and not to mention his continuous talk while he's designing ... just dropping that timeless philosophy
First time I ever saw this car was in 50 Cent’s “Window Shopper” music video.
I was just a kid when this car was first introduced, and let me just say it is and still is my favorite car. Only a few vehicles ever have captured my imagination the MC-12 is one of them. The jaguar s type and the Mercedes SLR McLaren are the only other two that I truly love, but the MC-12 is by far my favorite. Thank you for bringing this masterpiece to life.
I saw this car for the first time when I was around 13, in a magazine from a guy from school. I still remember how amazed I was and was staring at it for so long, admiring its shape and that beautiful white and blue paint.
It was the car that planted the seed in me to become a car guy. Thank you Frank!
I remember seeing this car at the Paris Auto show in 2004 I believe, I was a kid and I found it super elegant and menacing
One of the best projects in car history, worth every cent
"If something works well, it looks great." 8:36
That reminds me of one of Kelly Johnson's sayings. "If it looks ugly, it will fly the same".
It's the same with boats. If it has beautiful lines it will sail fast. If it looks like a barge...
not only is the design information pure gold, Frank's signature epitomizes the thought process of a designer - even such a functional graphic must be imbued with individuality, purpose, and beauty.
Trey Quattro I feel the same Trey. 💥👍
I've always thought the MC12 was more beautiful than the Enzo.
They're both great in their different ways since those two brands have different history and legacy. Both aged very well till today (i think the Enzo is way more beautiful than the laFerrari, the same way the F40 outclassed its successor F50) and I pretty sure they plus the Carrera GT will be classic legends of our time period
@@vietthanhnguyen1227 Laferrari is more beautiful
@@syedbabarashrafsubzwari4993 The LaFerrari, as a car, isn’t bad looking at all, although its angles and exaggerated shapes can be a bit much for me, especially the front. Some will say beautiful is subjective, for me beautiful design should be both functional and timeless. F40 are made before F50 a decade and most of the world admit it is better looking . I think the case will be the same with Enzo/laFerrari.
@@syedbabarashrafsubzwari4993 each car had it design but because they need to function so it had area that i hated it.... but if you asked me what the best looking p1 that Frank Stephenson 's design are the best...
@@vietthanhnguyen1227 Well its your opinion, the P1 looks good no doubt but the Laf is better for me
You know @Frank Stephenson knows design when he uses a Bic Cristal - one of the best writing implements ever.
It's a wonderful car to do races with in Forza Horizon 4!
Yup, I did a 1h race with friends around the Goliath not long ago and this won
im just discovering how most of my favorite cars were designed by this dude
It's absolutely amazing having someone this talented and with so many iconic cars under his belt make youtube videos. Thank you Frank.
Thank you for watching!
This channel is fascinating. I’m a mechanical engineer in the US aerospace industry. To me only function matters. I have no artistic styling capability at all. So it is fascinating to watch artists / stylists work. I’m in awe of their creativity and talent.
Thank you Rick! 👍
I was in Monaco for the GP in 2002 and 2003. At the time only 12 MC12s had been produced, and I saw 2 of them parallel parked on the friggin' streets one morning while walking around. Insanity. Beautiful car. I really got to look up close at one for sale in a Maserati dealership here in Vienna a few years later. Really beautiful design.
Hail to this man for one of the best looking cars ever
I lived in a condo DT and there was often one parked out front.... amazing car.
I'm jealous because he still gets to be nine and draw cars all day. How cool is that.
so much experience and knowledge absolutely amazing
The MC12 is much more beautiful than the enzon for me. Is amazing all nice cars you design. Congratulations
Masterpiece with a 50p Bic pen.... amazing.
And still, that car is one of the most beautiful supercar ever made.
You should give these sketches away, would look great in a frame!. Have always preferred the design of the MC12 over the Enzo. Impossibly exotic.
The MC12 GT1 in Vitaphone colours is THE race car to me. Thank you for giving us an insight on how this beauty came to be.
A lot of us are really critical of many car designs but this series is making me appreciate how much designers have to factor in when designing a car.
One of the most recognizable and awesome designs ever.
"Things that work well look fantastic, things that don't work well don't look very good to begin with" so simple but very accurate
The slats on the front heat vents are my favorite part of MC12
Did Frank design every modern classic i can remember!? When i was a kid i used to draw quite a bit, often cars. My dream was to become a car designer, architect or psychologist. I ended up become a car loving psychologist :)
I believe that this is one of the best looking and well-designed car man ever made.. this is a masterpiece.
I saw an MC12 in Seoul circa 2009. A sight I’d never forget. It’s not like anything I’ve ever seen on the road even including the CLK GTR.
These videos are great, a design discussion without marketing fluff is hard to find
"If something works well, it looks great" There's a beautifully refined thought process. Hats off. These videos are a joy to watch.
Thank you for sharing this knowledge and your approach and method for designing this beautiful car. So grateful that you are making these videos, I had no idea you designed the MC12 and even the F430; now your explanation and method make these stand out even more. You have an incredible legacy... X5, mini, McLaren... simply amazing
Just watched this with my 3 year old son....first time he's sat still and quiet! You are a genius Frank! Bravo!
It's cool you're sketching with a simple ballpoint pen. I've always started with pencil, then went to pen. The ideas are the real tools.
I don’t know if anyone has told you this, but the cars you create always seem to resemble you Frank!
The MC12 is one of few cars that have touched my heart and soul at the sametime. Everytime i see a MC12 in a showroom or car show....I have goosebumps for a few hours.
I've seen a couple of these Stunning Cars at Lime Rock Race Track.... it's like a Magnet when you see it... It really Pulls you In!!
Hi Frank! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on the new MC20 design from Maserati. I hope it's a planned video down the road. Take care and keep it up!
When you mentioned the beauty and function of the car I couldn't help but think of the Buckminster Fuller quote "when I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty but when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong". Great work, sir!
That is one ICONIC car that you have designed!!
Waiting for "MC12 designer picks apart the MC20" to drop in 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, ... :D
This was my dream supercar when I was younger. It just looked so different from every other supercar i'd ever seen and I loved the blue and white paintjob
It's always so satisfying to see him sign off his sketch at the end. I also like the commentary of why every design, every line has a reason of being there and how they relate to the history of the company and how he wants to take the direction to the future.
I love the close up handheld shot. It feel so cozy and welcoming
I love how he drew up the design with certain functions being considered BEFORE he got to that specific design point
Cars, design and calming voice of Mr.Frank its pleasure to listen to.
Great job
Glad you enjoyed it
All I can say is Thank You for designing such an awesome car.
As far as design language is concerned you are the designer that moves my soul. I didn't know that designed the MC12 and P1 until I stumbled on your channel after you reviewed the bronco. Magnificent !
My favorite racecar, thanks for giving it to us.
I remember driving this badboy in Test Drive Unlimited 1, when i was younger. Such a blast!
This content makes me wish more designers out there did something similar, we see and know of your (their) great designs but don't get to appreciate the thoughts / restrictions during development. Fantastic content Frank. Thanks.
Thanks for watching!
Grazie mille. I love the confidence of your mastery of your vision that you work in ink and not pencil!
This was one of the first car designs that I fell in love with, it's absolutely gorgeous
Im not a supercar guy, but this, the Diablo & Saleen S7 do it for me.
I love this series on your channel! Catching a glimpse of your design process has been very exiting! Can’t wait for the next one!
I love these videos. Keep up the great work Frank.
These Videos are SO GREAT! They're a TOTAL blessing for people like me who are trying to be car designers
THIS is exactly the content i always wished to find on youtube.
instant sub and like!
Inspirational as always. love your channel Frank Keep up the amazing work!
Glad you enjoy it!
Mesmerizing to watch. A true labor of love
Another great car and most informative video. Thanks again Frank.
5 meters and 10 minutes of pure industrial poetry. GRACIAS
Really loved the perspective view Frank! Also loved what you say about not a lot of thinking in one line! So true.
So amazing! I love the art of creation! Thank you!
Incredible! Thanks for sharing your work👍
Thank you for giving us this fine example design sir in love with that car since the day it was launched!!!
Gracias frank, estaba teniendo un mal dia hasta que me llego esta notificacion jaja estaba esperando el mc12 desde que empezo el canal
Just drove it today for the first time in Assetto Corsa and now I see a video on it. Awesome.
This is so amazing to watch. Please keep making more video. Thank you
The story of this cars creation has been told, shown and put together brilliantly. If only it were something I could just go out and buy 😅 one day perhaps!
Incredible content, Frank. Not only the stories and the access, but the insight and perspective are what will come people flocking to these videos. Don’t stop!
Frank the MC12 is one of the most beautiful modern sport car ever, I still remember when it came out and it took away from me the disappointment for the design of the Enzo, it's a shame that was in a certain way misunderstood and seen as a reworked tuned down Enzo (mostly because of the engine been powered down and would be interesting to know if Ferrari pushed this to avoid internal competition), anyway a design that instantly tell you racing car, the front with the extractor is just stunning.
My absolute favorite car design of all time. Just so much presence, so much purpose. This car inspired so many sketchbook doodles when I was a student and honestly, to this day.
i thank you for taking the time and sharing your thinking and prosses of making such an iconic car
My favorite motorsport photo on my walls: the Vitaphone-liveried MC12 blasting through the rain at Spa. Just a beast! A champion on the track and magnificent on the street!
Thanks for sharing!
One of my favourite cars ever! It’s just so beautifully crazy
Phenomenal, Frank! The design of the MC-12 stands heads above many other exotic sports car designs. There’s something about it that reminds me of Marcello Gandini’s Miura. Sleek, elegant and aggressive. Excellent work!
Wow, I'm seriously loving this series. What an incredible little peek into the process of one of the most legendary automotive designers. Thank you, Frank! I'm really excited for the P1 episode as its one of the most distinctly beautiful shapes I've ever seen and look forward to hearing the thoughts behind creating it.
shockingly rare, interesting and exclusive content here.... thanks a lot!
I see Maserati MC12, i click!
One of my favourite car.
I watched a video of yours the other day, i don't know why i didn't sub at that time because it was a delight to ear your talk about it.
I love hearing talented people talk about how they do what they do.
Art is life.
Seems like geniuses have a deep understanding of "what's going on here". ^^
Wide conscience, knowledge, intelligence to put the pieces together.
I'm amazed to see how awesome humans can be.
You sir, are of them.
Thank you
Thank you for sharing your insights.
Thank you so much I am an architectures student and I would be thinking about car design and there were no one to explain Thanks to you
I find it is one of the most iconic yet some how forgotten cars and designs ever made. Maybe as a result of all the road models being housed in closed collections and rarely seeing day light !
I love this car, and have always loved it, i would say its almost the spiritual succesor of the F40 in some ways, but also builds on the greatness of older gt1 cars like the clkgtr, or the 911 gt1...
Really a beautiful piece of work and a shame we dont see them more often in public.
I had no idea you designed this masterpiece. Wow. What an honor. This has been a long time favorite and one of a kind supercar that still looks incredible even today. I saw only one on the road unlike other supercars that I'm seeing too much of already.
Thank you sir for one of THE most beautiful creation to date. And thank god for test drive unlimited for introducing me to this supreme goddess of a vehicle.
thanks Frank, was left begging for more information, that proptruding rear wing on either edge, the rear design with the arch vent, the roof scoop, the two tone colour scheme that makes it so instantly recognisable, please do a second part! such an iconic vehicle of the supercar podium deserves another ten minutes and some more anectdotes please!
