Frank, thanks again for another beautiful exposition. I was a mechanic for years, and for the last 30 years I've been a violin maker. I love the idea of using the rules of mathematics and proportion, and learnt a lot about forms and geometry from Kevin Coates' excellent book Geometry, Proportion and the Art of Lutherie. 1.618 (the golden section) is also used to determine the musical scale, which of course is mind blowing!! (i.e the fret positions on a guitar etc are positioned in that proportion).
I saw my first P1 in person on the 30th of November. I had wanted to see one for over 7 years since it first came out. The car in video games grew on me and it quickly became my lifetime dream car, the dream car I had never seen. I went to mclaren Dallas with a rumor there was a P1 on the floor, and it was under a cover. I stared at it for about 10 minutes while casually sipping a seltzer water and the guy who kinda runs the showroom floor said from behind me “I bet you wanna see it eh?” And then I told him I had never seen one in person. He put his phone call on hold and took the covers off of the car from the tail. It was the most beautiful car I have ever seen before, the carbon fiber was literally everywhere except the paint, a pretty metallic silver. I shed some tears, took some photos while he resumed his call, and helped him put the cover back on the car after I was done. He had shown me the mechanical locking mechanism and opened the door so I could look inside, the chassis number is 126. It’s a number that I can’t forget anymore. My favorite parts of the car are probably the scoop, the aggressive bonnet, the carbon door panels, the carbon door sills, the rear wing that was also in exposed carbon, headlights and taillights, and the fans behind the mesh in the rear of the car. The only cars I could even remotely compare to the P1 is the Huayra BC and BC Roadster, a purple carbon Huayra Roadster I saw (sadly it crashed last month and was completely totaled, still have a piece of that one), the Pagani Zonda Barchetta in blue carbon fiber, and honestly nothing else. The P1 and the Huayra BC Are both my favorite because of how unique they are, and their powerplants. Fairly, the Huayra has a very unique V12 while the P1 just has a V8, but I love the way the P1 looks, how futuristic its design is compared to the classic Huayra design. It’s more curvy and sharp than the Huayra is, being more boxy and squared off, yet still intricate throughout. Thank you, for designing such an incredible machine, I hope to own one someday. The one I saw was pending deposit and selling for just $1.4M. I can attain that by the time I’m 40 flying planes across the world. Take care, and again, thank you. It is a truly special car and always will be my favorite mclaren.
McLaren P1 is one of the best looking car in the history period. I'm so glad i'm getting to see the thoughts of someone who actually worked on the design of it
I gotta be honest here. I never really liked the new design language of McLaren, the P1 in particular. BUT after watching this video and seeing how much thought and spirit went into the design of this masterpiece, I actually started appreciating it a little more. Now, after spending hours watching videos about the P1, I actually come to like it. It's amazing how much of an impact the "making of" a car can have on a person's opinion about it!

This was a great video behind the inspiration of designing the P1. There is beautiful organic curvature to this car, it has aggressive elements in its design but a very beautiful sleek body drawing inspiration from nature for aerodynamics. The headlights and taillights were done marvelously incorporating the McLaren logo, it gives the P1 it’s signature distinguished look.

The P1 is one of the most amazing automotive designs in the last 2 decades. Special, Frank.
I love the rear end of the P1, with the mesh grille and those fans. Such a mean looking thing.
McLaren P1 is one of the best looking car in the history period. I'm so glad i'm getting to see the thoughts of someone who actually worked on the design of it
I feel like Frank just told me some secrets, that no one knows about. I'am impressed sir.
This car is the closest thing to perfection in My opinion. Its a delight to see your inspirations Sir. Cheers from Brasil.
The most beautiful car ever made.
First McLaren that I fell in love with. Love the design. Beautiful.
P1 seems even more amazing knowing how it's design features were fluenced by nature
Can't wait to watch this one 😍😍😍😍
@john smith Yes i did 🥰
This car aged like fine wine
this is absolutely incredible! This man has done so many absurdly nice cars, with so much purpose integrated into the design. I am a car-loving graphic designer, this content is so appealing to me, absolutely wonderful to have Frank walk through many of the crucial aspects of each design!
I know this is a very young channel on YT, but I really hope for all the best to this channel on this platform. I know Mr. Stephenson doesn't really need more recognition with this kind of portfolio, but thank you so much for taking the time to share this with us
This car is the most beautiful piece of art i've ever seen.
P1 is my favorite car of all time. Thank you for your hard work designing this car! This is a truly amazing design!
Wow, thank you for sharing
Thankgod I found this channel, the P1 is one of the best looking super cars ever designed! Amazing work! Loved every minute of this video!
This is so exciting, getting a glimpse into what is a rather unknown art. I'll need another lifetime.
I love these videos. Such tasteful train of thought. Kudos and many thanks for sharing.
Absolutely incredible. Adopting aerodynamics from nature is genius!
I always loved face of P1, it's so inspiring, aggressive and I really like that smile 🙂

As an architect I appreciate and understand the Golden Rule and see if everywhere in nature - but this was really fabulous
Prolly one of the most emotional shapes I've ever laid my eyes on. Thank you.

Out of all your designs this is my favourite Frank! Gorgeous lines, so organic
Awesome video, one of the best and most entertaining descriptions of the design thought process. As a product manager in the tech industry, I try to find design inspiration as much as I can to stay afloat in all the engineering involved, truly inspiring stuff! :)
It was so fresh and so unique when it came out. It's timeless. I love every peace of it. Can't change a single line. congratulations!
What a legend frank I was shocked to know the X5 was one of your designs as it was the first ever luxury car came into my family and I still think it is the best looking x5 to date
Excellence personified, Frank! Well done!
"To achieve the best aerodynamic shapes, it is best to copy the hydrodynamics of sea creatures" - Luigi Colani
Awesome! Can’t wait to see some Humpback-Tech on the streets someday! Too bad I missed today‘s live thing, but it’s a workday after all....
He's a magician with a pen... It's so awesome
Best looking car of all time for me. Beautiful
I remember seeing the back end for the first time and being speechless. Admirations to you sir.
So odd, I was actually going to ask you to review the P1. And yet you designed it. Respect 👍
One of the most recognizable cars of the past decade, this cars unlike many others, actually has personality
I’ve been cleaning this car and just fascinated by it I work with stream and if you watch the air flow of the cars it’s just beautiful. To watch this video as a designers and now learning that fish sick I’m not going to watch some fish videos haha
I remember driving on the Angeles Crest Highway near LA and coming across a yellow P1 at Newcomb’s Ranch. Turns out it was Jay Leno’s! It was incredible to see the car in person, and he was delighted to share his appreciation of the car with others!
Amazing "nature" is able to give us such insight, having not been designed, to aid in our designs...
The man who designed the most gorgeous hypercar ever created
Being a car designer was my dream career when i was a kid. Thank you for making these videos! I feel like I’m vicariously living through you😅🙏🏼
And this is just a glimpse! Incredible car and incredible designer
Amazing to see the thinking involved in the design and the level of detail down to the mirror stalks. Also amazing how well you can draw with a BIC biro.
This guy is a legend. I own one of his creations and have to say It makes me appreciate my car even more so now.
Just watched this not realising that frank was the designer of the looks of this car. Frank ! Thank you for being responsible for one of (in my eyes) the most amazing looking and poster worthy cars that would be worthy of being in the same legendary league as the f40 and countash
Wow dude, you're a treasure. I just watched you rip the 4 series grille and react to GTA cars. Then I watched this and caught myself with a huge smile when I realized how much I loved listening to you explain stuff that I had no idea was so interesting. Then imagine how blown my mind was when I realized how new your channel is, wtf! You're gunna do very well on UA-cam, congrats
Love these videos! So cool seeing the insight behind these designs
Glad you like them!
