TAOISM | The Path of Amorality and the Way of the Moral Fool

  • In this podcast, we will explore the amorality of Taoism and why morality itself is immoral. Taoist philosophy explains that when we operate from partiality and create standards, we instantly create its opposite. Essentially, a standard is its opposite in another form and that is especially the case in regards to morality, making any attempt of morality an act of immorality. We cannot escape that any form of morality is man-made and ultimately an external belief system, not the way of nature. This is why in the Tao Te Ching, Lao-tzu implores us to renounce morality to rediscover the real natural path that is amoral, without any standard superimposed upon life.

Once you become more aware the whole concept of morality slowly dissolves in a natural way. You no longer judge your actions against certain standards. You don't care about being a good person anymore. That concept becomes totally meaningless. Exercising passionate devotion towards a situation doesn't require morals. Moral stands in the way of acting out of what feels right in a situation.

Many people in history have been imprisoned, burned on stake, stabbed to death, and beheaded all in the name of morality.
When we sleep, we all breathe, rest, and dream, without moral codes to follow or observe.

Every critique leveled here could also be applied to Jordan Peterson. Him going against social justice therefore creates more social justice warriors, and vice versa according to the Taoist philosophy mentioned in this video.

    Dear Jason,
I whole heartedly congratulate you for these podcasts. These are the topics I believe are the essentials that human beings must/will eventually come to when they are ready for them. Your talks are thoroughly engaging. I see that you have a comprehensive understanding of the eastern philosophies. What I appreciate the most is the way you see in them not any underlying conflict between them but a unifying thread. For example, the Tao or the Brahman or the Anatta, though not exactly meaning the same they indicate at the reality. This is a totally unbiased and fair approach that you take. Clarity of the essentials and fluidity of mind are the essence of your talks.
Keep the good content coming. Thank you.

This reminds me of something I think on alot, doing the wrong thing for the right reason and doing the right thing for the wrong reason.
A very moralistic(dogmatic) person would argue that there is no right reason for doing the wrong thing.
But it is about perspective, what's wrong for you may be bright for me.

Thank you for this! I've had such frustrating conversations with some "religious" friends and family who say spiritual education is promoting morality, people still cannot get over being spiritual and finding truth are being morally acceptable but rather realizing the absolute nature of consciousness, has nothing to do with man made rules which we call morality

  • @alangordon99

At the risk of being the moral fool (surrounded by everyone here who believes morality is foolish) - let me make the case for morality. You are both an inner being and an outer being. Therefore, your incarnation has two aspects - an inner aspect and an outer aspect. Your inner aspect can be calm, relaxed and non-judgmental - this is a worthy goal and a preferred way of life. However, that is not the totality of your existence. You exist as a member of a species, a member of a community, a member of a family. You have a role in the outer world, and as you go through life you have countless thoughts which lead to intentions which lead to actions. It is that outer stream - from thought to intention to action - which must be guided by a moral code - not someone else's pre-fabricated moral code - but a moral code that you create for yourself. Most people go through life without any awareness of the effect they have on others. Your morality, or lack of morality, affects the lives and experiences of others - and to believe that it doesn't matter is to ignore the outer reality of your being. Compassion, Service, Cooperation, Honesty, Equality, Justice, Lifting up Others - these are not foolish - these are the essential moral guidelines of a just and enlightened society.
When you say morality is a fool's pursuit, you become self-centered, and you miss the importance of the outer aspect of your incarnation.
"Teach this triple truth to all: a generous heart, kind speech, and a life of service and compassion are the things which will renew humanity."
    ~ The Buddha

This is a very interesting viewpoint ... I tend to agree I am centrist. However, I will always stand up for people who are being bullied or abused in some way. That's who I am. I believe that many western "morals" create mental health problems in people. Some people force their beliefs and make others feel like their beliefs are wrong and in turn create psychological problems in others.

    I really enjoyed this discussion.
It is indeed ironic that the woke see a gender spectrum, but not a political one--i.e., I'm economically Left, socially libertarian, culturally liberal, and environmentally conservative. I mean conservative in the true sense of the word, btw, as in to conserve/preserve, not in the partisan sense where I dismiss climate science.
Lack of nuance is missing in far too many discussions in these polarized times.
Personally, I think if you like either party in America, you're not too bright or informed, for they are a corporate duopoly and all the rest is theater. When it comes to taking care of billionaires and waging resource wars, Democrats and Republicans are on the exact same page.
The culture war theater is just to keep people divided and kicking down at the powerless, instead of united in a class war against THEM!!

Morality is all about social control and power. I call this overfuckery. We are all oppressed by this universal practice and in turn, oppress others. We are the overfucked and we are also the overfuckers. What do I mean? Overfuckery occurs when someone tells or worse, forces/coerces another to conform to a system or culture of norms. These may be social, societal, familial, or religious rules or customs with sanctions for violations, etc. The overfuckers, the leaders, the priests, the gurus, the teachers, the parents go around telling others what they have to do/be, need to do/be, must do/be, or should do/be. If they are saying "should" instead of "must," this merely betrays their lack of power in comparison to the real authoritarians who have the means to force the issues. Overfuckery comes about because people are born into states of delusional unenlightenment where they take life too seriously but ironically, not sincerely enough. The Daoist or others who have discovered what's going on with this thing called life and who they really are can avoid this trap. We can "wake up" inside the dream of Unity Consciousness Who we all are together. And, we can fully experientially know this by various means/processes of enlightenment. And, if such means/processes are truly enlightened, they will be in the flow of the Dao, warm, friendly, bright, and easy to bear, even fun. Contrarily, we are born "fucked" where we, in our persona/identity self-misidentification, think we are real when we are not real but only illusory/temporary. Being born fucked, we are deluded; we do not realize that life, we, and all that is in it, is an illusion. So, we take it too seriously and go around in our "fucked" unconscious state overfucking each other. The Daoists and others recognize the futility of all this...as long as one doesn't turn Daoism into another system of overfuckery which would then not be of the Dao in its character. On another note, your analysis of east vs. west is a bit overstated. I do agree with you about Thailand but China and Korea are both very uptight societies in a Confucian sort of way. Even Thailand, when you really think about it, has their own version of overfuckery because Thai Buddhism is not really enlightened but filled with all kinds of overfuckery. Plus, the Thai have no choice about their monarchal system that they cannot criticize without being jailed. This is an example of pure overfuckery. We do not have a Daoist or an enlightened society anywhere on earth as far as I can tell.

“Since you died with Christ to the elemental spiritual forces of this world, why, as though you still belonged to the world, do you submit to its rules: “Do not handle! Do not taste! Do not touch!”? These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on merely human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.”
    ‭‭Colossians‬ ‭2‬:‭20‬-‭23‬ ‭NIV‬‬
The Way of Christ is oneness with the Creator, not living under a moral code.

about a month and a half ago i started bad anxiety, it was so bad i could barely eat and i couldn’t even walk without thinking i was gonna faint, i have fixed that problem, my anxiety has reduced and i’m not always anxious. yet something that scares me is how for a while i had trouble finding happiness, i didn’t feel joy. maybe bcuz i was too focused on the negative it was crushing me and i couldn’t see the positive. i had a lot of things stressing me. i had physical symptoms of anxiety, trouble breathing, light headed and sometimes felt disconnected like i died and i was in a dream or a play. i feel way better now, i do :) but still wonder what happened and i hope it doesn’t happen again bcuz it had killed a part of me. i know it might’ve thought me something or might teach me something, but not sure yet. was that the dark night of the soul? was that an awakening? will i go through it again? sometimes i felt like time is so slow and i’d be bored. i think it might be because so focused on the negative and thinking when am i gonna be okay again so it feels slow. u know how when it’s christmas and everyone is eating and ur waiting to open the gifts and even if ur doing something u can’t wait for everyone to finish eating so u open up ur gifts? it’s like i’m waiting for my mind to stop eating so i can finally open up my gifts. (keep in mind all this in within a month and a half) i wonder what it is, the reason of me going through this. i’m getting better but please help. also i was a person that wasn’t afraid of death, now i am a little because i’m not sure what happens after we die, maybe bcuz i’m scared to feel the way i’m feeling right now. so if you know please bring me clarity and explain to me id really appreciate. also i’m 14 so i’m still young and new to this sort of.

What a fascinating, brave talk. I am only a few minutes in, but I expect I will learn a lot. I am coming off of reading many of the Stoics (Seneca and Boethius) and wanted to take a break from that, so your talk here is a nice segueway into a philosophy I have always been meaning to explore more intensely. By the way, I almost began my comment originally with an exaggeration/lie. I was going to say, "I have just watched 10 minutes of your video so far and I think it's great..." when really I was, embarassingly, only 3 minutes in. Would my lie have bothered you, or was that me being amoral rather than immoral? Since I chose to be honest and corrected my original comment, am I going to unintentionally create something immoral in some way? I am partly joking with my question here, but also serious to some extent. Thank you again.

I have a question? In the spirit search the quest is to be conscious in the present moment.
The word conscious can be defined as the act of a human to know wrigth from wrong doing.
Dharma and karma are also other words used to describe wright or wrong actions. Moral and inmoral is not the same concepts?
    No bad actions
    No good actions
    I cant see this....
There are good people with great values!
There are people doing the best they can, and also we have people acting for there own well been, with very bad inttentions.
There is no diference in this two actitudes!
Anyway you want to call it.
