My doc was going to put me on calcium channel blocker in addition to 3 othrr blood pressure meds. I was able to steady my bp pretty well so im glad i never started them. Im at 15% functioning and will start dialysis soon. Wish i would've known about carbs a long time ago.
@AbidKhan-lj7ex hi! I started dialysis 2 months ago. I do peritoneal at home while I sleep. Its going very well and I feel good. Do you have kidney problems?
@AbidKhan-lj7ex im not interesting in transplant due to risk of cancer from steroids, etc., needed after transplant. Im a stage 3 cancer survivor. Also expenses increase after a certain amount of time.
Many thanks for great explanation. Just getting bit lost what to eat. I am vegetarian, with lots of plants in my diét. I am trying to avoid carbs. I dont know how strict should I bé, there is a lot of carbs in vegetables and fruits too. Should we avoid also healthy carbs as quinoa .. and then a big group of oxalates plants, which also include soy and soy products. All together it makes it very small range to eat. Curcuma is also high oxalate, can I take it anyway. Many thanks for your great work. Tatiana
Droppin ace inhibitor would probably be a good idea since that is likely the cause: if the body can't use renin to control blood pressure, it will use vasopressin which is known to cause the cysts. Another piece of the puzzle: vasopressin causes low bone density, thus calcium loss. From Functions of vasopressin and oxytocin in bone mass regulation, 2015. So here you have the calcium disregulation. Any bp lowering med will increase vasopressin for body to compensate.
Hi Doctor im using extore tablet Kindly tell me if it is suitable for me or not Im polycystic kidney disease patient and my age is 28 year. While my kidney still working normally but I'm facing increase in blood pressure.
Did I hear this right? Low carb diet such as KETO inhibits mTOR pathway which promotes cysts growth??? My doctor told me to limit protein intake many years ago (my kidney function is normal) as a prevention and I've been limiting protein intake since then.
Yes, low carb is important to slow cyst growth in early PKD. We use a recommend a modified keto diet that increases healthy fat but moderate protein intake. Restricting protein intake will become important in advanced PKD and CKD
I was recently diagnosed with APKD. the Doctor informed that I also have Cysts on my liver and Pancreas which were revealed during an MRI. I have the Slower growing version. My concern --- is the Cysts will burst. What happens then? What will I feel? I'm a veggie eater of plants and nuts ...Grains too. Thank you for your informative content...
It is uncommon for cysts to burst, but bleeding can occur within the cyst, and they rarely get infected. These situations can lead to significant flank and abdominal pain. Management is usually supportive.
Dear doc is there any problem taking cordyceps for CKD and is it helpful in reducing the progression of kidney disease research is limited any personal experience with patients?
Thank you for your question. While cordyceps may have some benefits lowering blood pressure and blood sugar, there are currently no good data about that support these benefits. In addition, there are no data that assure its safety in kidney disease.
Awesome summary of molecular mechanisms underlying PKD. Love the focus on dietary interventions.

With fake kidneys being created that work the same, will this be a solution in the future to replace PKD kidneys with? Thanks
Hello doctor can surgery be done to remove cysts, if you only have 4 to 5 cysts
Same question..
Surgery and cyst removal are not part of the standard of care for PKD because they tend to recur.
