When you screw wood ,you should also use wood glue. After the glue dries, the joint becomes much stronger
Came here to say this!
I applaude you for sharing your failures and missteps it shows your humility and will make others less likely to give up on a project . Failure should not be shameful but it can be a good teacher.
totally agree! I knew I would have some hiccups but always here to share the trials & errors!
“Making mistakes is better than faking perfection.” You showing us your mistakes allows you to show us who you are at your core - a teacher. Like you, we can learn from your mistakes :)
I think this will look really good when its finished but I have a suggestion. If you're going to make a base that attaches to the outside, maybe the tops of the side pieces should be cut at an angle rather than left as a blunt cut. Or rounded to compliment the arched top.
I agree. The tops of the new support posts should be rounded at the same radius as the top of the cabinet.
Darker Charcoal base, lighter top. A glaze that matches the Charcoal on the bottom piece used on the top piece.
I agree , would it be easier to add a trim piece across the top from both legs? That may add strength but not sure how it will look? Also the legs would then have to go up to the first side brace on the cabinet so it masks the side braces on the legs, maybe….Good luck I can’t wait to see the finished project. 😀
I agree it looks unfinished. Obviously it is unfinished but the tops look like it needs something else. Angled or something
Or maybe some decorative finial
id love to see a dark navy paired with a natural wood element. Navy makes a good neutral I think and is a nice change from black. I have only recently discovered your videos and I"m hooked
Agree with the Navy!!!
My thoughts exactly
When finished, will this tend to be top heavy? It looks like it might be.
Love the concept! BUT I am a pretty concerned with the stability of this piece having such long skinny legs and with the glass and whatever would be displayed in it.... it's going to be really heavy!! I made over a cabinet just like this myself.
I would think left as is is going to be very top heavy and need bolted to the wall.
I will for sure suggest anchoring to the wall to the buyer!
The legs should be the base to the cabinet not on the outside...they will not take the weight of the glass and whatever is placed on the shelves...it's a matter of physics!
Yes!!
check out part 2 everything is great!
Black and natural wood tone ❤
Agree with others that wood glue is a must. The glue is what holds the wood together and the screws just hold the wood while it dries but are also left in. But you go girl!
I don’t think your base will be able to support the weight load of the glass shelves and any heavy items placed in cabinet. You may also have to anchor the cabinet to the wall for support. 3x3 or 4x4 inch legs would work and sanding the edges to a soft curve would compliment the top. A mossy green color would look nice.
I think the legs look odd. shouldnt they go all the way up the side?
I’m with you. Maybe cut the top at an angle. I vote for black.
I agree, I think the legs look odd and an after thought. Maybe have the legs attach from the base instead of going g up the 8". It is going to be beautiful when finished. I vote for black, classy and elegant.
Love your channel. A word of caution: the cabinet seems extremely top heavy and at high risk for tip-over. Thank you for sharing your projects.
I was thinking the same thing . I’m afraid it isn’t going to be stable enough especially given it will be heavier with items inside
GREEN! Either a really dark green or a sage. Either would be pretty and so on point right now. Of course Black is always Beautiful and also making a comeback, so it would be relevant for years to come.
I love these videos with tool instructions. Your videos just get better and better.
Soft matte black with light stained wood on bottom.
Black with natural colored wood would look SO good 😍
I love that you show your struggles and how you overcome them ❤
😀😀 gotta share the process!!
Love what you are doing here and your vulnerability. You are adorable the way you tackle new projects and you inspire so many.
I think you might want to check to make sure the base attaching to the outside can carry the load. The weight will all be transferres to the screws instead of the strength of the wood which could shear.
Also I may have misunderstood, but if you used 1 1/2" screws on 1 1/2 inch wood, even with rhe counter sinc you gt want to change out those screws for longer ones to help keep it safe and sturdy.
Excited about your contest worh Up Paint and the rest of Flipmas. Keep up the great work!
I vote for a beautiful rich Forest Green
I would like to see both pieces together.
Thank You
I didn’t understand where you were going with this piece until I looked at the inspiration pics on IG. It’s going to be beautiful! Can’t wait to see it finished! I vote for a dark color- black, blue or green
I think you should paint it a really dark red color like a burgundy blackish color, it would look really mysterious!
Navy and natural would look good and i agree that the legs would look better angled.
Glossy black combined with elements in a medium natural wood stain
I really appreciate how positive you are when the project doesn’t go according to plan. I learn something new with every FFT video. Happy Holidays ❤
A dark green would be nice.
I love how this piece is turning out! Soft black paint is my suggestion. You are such an inspiration!
I highly recommend using the same method done when framed legs are added to the bottom of a dresser. With your shelf idea above. Strongest if the top piece sits on top of bottom piece.
I thought she was going to do that but just have longer legs. Someone else wrote that the way she did this isn’t a strong base. 😬
I feel that the darker colours work better for these larger pieces. Excited to see part 2!
Love this project! I’d love to see it in black with the three top panels and something of the base stained.
Because the piece is so tall and narrow (the buffet bottom was probably deeper than the top), I would suggest adding some kind of stabilizer hardware to the top or back like Ikea dressers usually have to prevent tipping. That way you protect the person who buys it but yourself too from liability if something happens. A label on the back to explain how and why to attach it for stability would be another idea.
Black!!!! And thank you for teaching about the tools and showing your missteps. It makes makes me feel allowed and ok when I make my own.😊
Wow Lauren this is amazing!! I like the color you used on your cabinets, cracked pepper with wood toned accents & chromw hardware.
I just have to say thank you for your 12 days of flipmas. I subscribe to several other flipping channels, and they are all mostly gone or putting up quickie thrifting videos and such. I really look forward to your daily flipmas videos.
This was such a great video. Loved when Neiman said measure twice, cut once as a question.😅 Also so happy that your vision is coming out as planned. This is going to be gorgeous when its completed. One note for future projects, adding wood glue when screwing the pieces together, makes for a stroger joint. Wonderful job, Lauren cant wait to see the finished project. Have a happy holiday, yall😊😊😊
It looks great! I believe a matte black, or a matte forest, green, or a matte navy blue 31:25 ❤😊
Navy blue with light wood!
You are an inspiration!! Thank you for sharing all of it! The mistakes and the victories!!! ❤❤❤
Hunter green is fantastic color. I’m getting ready to use that color on one of my projects.
Thanks for the in-depth on the Kreg. It seems “slightly less” daunting after watching your video. Can’t wait to see the finished piece!
I think green would be awesome on this piece. Also black would be great as well.
I really liked this video including the mistakes, which shows that we are all human, and that things occasionally go wrong but we adapt and come out stronger as a result!
Well done!
I’ve never seen a project like this where the base is connected on the outside of the Furniture I can’t wait to see how it turns out
This was fun watching you. You are so real and learning from our mistakes is a good thing. I can't wait for the final result.💖👍
I like the person idea of navy blue and stained light wood!
Paint the piece green. I am a hobbyist woodworker. You needed to use wood glue , which would have made the pieace much stronger. A woodworker's favorite glue is Titebond II. Titebond II only works on raw wood. For painted wood you need to use JB Weld glue. Also, a table saw would be very helpful for precise cuts when using plywood and other larger pieces of wood.
I Love that you succeeded with your vision! But Sorry, but I have to say that it reminds me of Stilts my Dad made for me when I was little. Boards with wedges nailed to them for my feet. Theres too much space between the new skinny base and the bigger boards on the cabinet. They just don’t seem to go together.
Hi from Scotland Lauren, I think this unit lends itself to a dark colour, midnight sky by Dixie Belle would be perfect ❤
Of course, I vote for black or maybe a charcoal gray… Good Luck & love it so far❤️🙏🏼🌹
Good job!
Dark green will be beautiful!!!
We would like to see it in the same blue that is in your sweater.
dark green. You’ve inspired me to paint my unit in the new year and I want to paint it dark green but it’s not a colour I see used very often so worried it won’t work. I would love to see you use this colour and put your special touch to it.
Black and natural wood is so nice
You will have a better chance of selling it quickly if you paint it a neutral color with a lighter shade of stain on the legs and shelf. You are a very good teacher. You explained very clearly the use of the pocket jig.
I think you should paint it Navy
Sage green would look really pretty
Midnight blue or blue gray,
Navy Blue.
Fun holiday game idea take a shot every time she says pocket holes lol can't wait to see the finished project I say green my husband says white go with the green!
But you know the cabinet where the mirror was broken made you rethink renov and it turned out beautiful and super modern!
It's beautiful Lauren 🤩 or it absolutely will be!!! I would definately paint it black for sure xxx
It’s so fun to see you working in that beautiful workshop instead of your garage. your new business looks beautiful. Thanks for letting us see pictures of your open house a couple weeks back. Merry Christmas.
Those legs are very thin to support that big cabinet. It would be better to use 3x3 pcs for the legs. The shelf would be better supported if you notched out the legs ( instead of the shelf). Also, using glue and clamping pieces together is much stronger than just pocket holes. Pocket holes are good for holding pieces together while glue is drying.
thanks for your feedback! its super sturdy! will use wood glue next time too!
@@FurnitureFlippingTeacher please consider all the woodworkers in your comments explaining how this design will not be sturdy. The points of failure being at the screws and the shallow depth compared to the height. This can be dangerous for your business and any potential buyer. This is why dressers and bookshelves often come with tethering straps and many caution statements.
I will definitely be suggesting anchors to the wall for the buyer! it truly is sturdy and even after putting all the glass back it all holds up. I have chatted with someone else who has done countless of these and bas never had any issues with it being top heavy. I really do appreciate all of the tips and advice and I will apply them to the next time I do something like this!
@FurnitureFlippingTeacher the curated attic? If so, I'd believe the key difference being that the base of those are under, not holding onto the edges of the bottom.
If this is how someone else did it, it's still not stable.
I understand putting a lot of work into something and feeling proud, but this can get someone hurt, in the case of a small child, killed.
Please take this as advice. That cabinet is a liability waiting to happen.
I like how you are showing the tools down in the corner. Good move
Soft sage green - there's soooo much black furniture about.
Agree 👍
Green.!! And black!!
Creamy light beige with black base and black accents.
Nice to see you building a project instead of only painting a piece of furniture. Several comments ago I wanted you to higher your projects for us viewers. Anybody can paint. But you are now offering viewers a new part of you. Good going.
Capaccino will be a great paint color.
I think this will be top heavy and a safety concern 😬
Blue
Definitely black!!!
Navy and natural or paint wash.
I’m so excited to build my stand with a shelf now. I enjoyed watching you build it❤
Definitely green,
Black would be chic.
Can’t wait to see it finished! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Oh my goodness thank you so much for showing and explaining how to use the jig pocket hole. 👏👏
If possible a dark wood stain, also I think the legs should go under the cabinet and not on the sides
That was so helpful and real!!
I would see it being either all cream kind of neutral, or black.
Looking forward to the final look!
Midnight Blue
Black 🖤
Thank you for showing the Kreg pocket hole. I’ve been debating what one to get for weeks now.
definitely worth it and will up your game when building anything!
Dark green!
I honestly don't care for the legs on the side like that. I think it would look better if they either went all the way or if they went under like it was a continuing wood from top to bottom.
Nail biting, this one ❤ will be waiting for the next video.
Definitely black with a beautiful wallpaper on the back. Go bold 😊❤
I think the cabinet will look gorgeous in black. Good job!!! Blessings 🙏👏👏👏👏👋👋❤️
I have tried small projects and really want to try a sprayer again. Your tips really help.
Black ❤
Very nice! Love that you did not give up. May I offer some advice from a furniture oldie - design a cleat system on the back of the upper unit about 3/4 up. Furniture this narrow can get top heavy especially if holding china. This will avoid untold tragedy with its new owner. Ikea has had the unfortunate experience of children passing because their narrow furniture was loaded top heavy. You’re doing an amazing job!
My kitchen has a lot of red accents. I would love to see you do something in red!
I would stain the new base and the little panels at the top of the cabinet in the same wood stain, something lighter colored. Then paint the rest of the cabinet in a serious intense color such a coal, navy, emerald, plum, etc. Then interesting (not wood) handles! Can't wait to see what you do!!
My hubby got me a Kreg pocket hole jig for xmas and we ended up building our barn board looking headboard right in our living room... lol. The jigs are the best as are any of the other tools they have. I would love to see either a dark brown stain or black paint. Good job on your build, it's so fun to accomplish something new!
Wow Lauren!
Lauren, wood glue!!! You need to use wood glue when attaching the legs.
Absolutely fantastic guys….you are so encouraging x👏👏👏
Dark grey 🇨🇦❤️
Navy blue
I love emerald green
