This is probably one of the best tutorials on UA-cam, not only do you show how you actually animated the rain but you also show how you went about researching and implementing the features and aesthetics that you want from both real life and your desired style reference, and no filler ^_^ This is just so perfect

I found this kinda randomly while trying to figure out how to draw (in Photoshop) rain effects on a window like in certain anime's. And yes Garden of Words, is the perfect example of this. Although this didn't go as much into detail as I'd like, and I'm still gonna have to search more; I did find the video to be very enjoyable. And the piano music in the background is so relaxing.
Honestly, if it were up to me, all tutorials would have piano music in the background. It's the perfect learning music. Also, this video was beautify done. Such a short clip, but so much depth and emotion..

Makoto shinkai anime are great for reference . I think weathering with you also has great references .

Which would you say is harder animate, Moving Water or Hands. Both of which are certainly not easy to draw.
hmm.. they are definitely both very difficult to draw! I think they also require different techniques, eg. water is more of an fx animation, therefore more straight ahead animation. While hands belong more to character animation, so it would usually be animated pose to pose.
I hope this makes sense, and of course, it depends on each person's strengths too!
@@wearedow I have animated both hands and water in motion before, I personally find hands more difficult because of proportion. But anyway, thank you for your response.
I find hands harder because it’s so hard to make them look organic rather than mechanical!

Awesome tutorial...I use Krita and I can't export animation with a transparent background. How do u export transparent animations to compile in AE?
oh no!
I have never used Krita before, so I'm not sure how to do it there, but you can try exporting it as a png sequence, and hopefully it gives you the option of exporting with transparency.
If not, you can put eg a green color as the background, and in AE you can color key it away, then you get a transparent BG :D

Actually I didn't understand very well how you did the first part of animation, che falling rain (fast) ;; I was trying to do it but I don't know where to start. I tried to search other video but nobody explain it well ;;
Hi Malika! Thanks so much for watching my video!! Oh yes, sorry I didn't explain it in detail~
For that one,
1. decide which direction, or where you want the rain to come from
2. draw many straight lines from that direction (make some longer, some shorter for variety)
3. draw 3 or 4 more frames like that (try to randomize it, and make sure you animate it on ones :D )
4. loop/copy-paste those 4-5 frames of animation! :D

Hi Lorienel! I use the website Syncsketch, I think it's free.
Just download your reference, load it into syncsketch and then you can draw over it (and do other cool things too :) )
Otherwise you can also load your reference into any animation software you're using, it should have a similar result :) Hope this helps!

Question with the rain dropping loop what should that look like as far as frames like 3 to 4 frame on 2 etc I'm having trouble with the timing
thanks so much for the questions, and I hope I understand it correctly.
For the falling rain I would animate it on ones (every frame at 24 fps), and for the little splashes I would animate it on twos (every other frame at 24 fps)
I hope this helps. Of course you can play around with the timing to find something that works best for you! Let me know if this didn’t answer the question 😅

I animated this in Toon Boom Harmony! For free software I can suggest OpenToonz. Although I have never used it, Studio Ghibli uses it (so it can definitely do highest quality animation!)

no, sorry for not clarifying! I painted the BG in photoshop, did the animation in Toon Boom Harmony, and composited it in After Effects :D I hope this helps!
