    I can completely relate to your situation, as I recently left my job in the SAF after serving for over 11 years. I felt the same way you do, and I decided to embrace change in my 30s. Let’s hope we both can find our purpose in our next chapter of life.

    • @TheLifeInvestors

      Ooh you served almost the same years as me in SPF haha. But yea while embracing change in our 30s is scary, we also have to remember that there are literally decades till we officially reach the 'retirement' age. So yea, it's a lot of time to switch careers.
      Wishing you all the best in your post-SAF career!

    Hi, great video. I used to be in one of the specialist units in spf for ns, and i can also say that there are jo regs who feel the same as you , especially when they are almost always not allowed to be posted to other units/div as our training to be in our unit is at least about 9 months for regs after hta, becoming too 'specialised' hence being stuck in the unit with very slow progression. Hard for them to rediscover their passion for spf that way sadly when you're doing a niche part within spf without liking it
    For prospective officers interested in spf, you really have to ask yourself if its the passion or the rice bowl thats making you more interested in the job because its the former that will really help you go through the challenges that comes with the job... for your mental health😅

    Better to decide that the force is not for you in your 20's/early 30's than in your 40's or 50's....I got a job in an international bank straight from college, but realised that it was not for me and left within 2 years for another career despite having landed a spot in the bank's most desired division.

      Hmm I think see what interest you or find a job you at least feel it's bearable to do first? At the bare minimum have to find some income to cover your monthly basic expenses so you would not have to constantly worry about your finances.
      Once you have that then can slowly think and consider what business you want to do and it also leaves you some room to start small and trial and error your way around.

    May I ask how is the salary like in SPF?
    When it comes to matters such as, bonuses, progression, quality of life, savings?
    Heard it isn't great nor terrible, any advice or comment?

    • @TheLifeInvestors
      @TheLifeInvestors  24 дні тому +3

      Yeap what you heard is generally correct, the salary I would say is comfortable. You would not be filthy rich, but you would not be a pauper too. There are also annual salary increments and periodic salary reviews too.
      Your starting salary depends greatly on which scheme you are enlisting in too. If you are enlisting with a degree (senior officer track), your starting salary would be around $5K+, while those with diploma/nitec would be $2K+. You can see the salary range at the SPF website. For context, my salary before resigning was ~$4.2K+ before accounting for allowance.
      Bonuses wise is pretty much standard within the civil service; performance bonus, mid-year, end-year and 13th month. For a typical standard grading, regular officers can expect total bonuses to be at least 3months+ while it's at least 4months+ for senior officers. There are also one-off bonuses such as sign on bonuses and anniversary bonuses too.
      Rank progression would mainly depend on your performance grading. For regular officers, it's typically once every 3 to 5 years while for senior officers it's 2 to 3 years up till the rank of DSP, afterwards it is very much dependent on whether there is enough room and positions for your rank to advance further. Most senior officers would retire with the rank of SUPT if they are not a scholar.
      Quality of life would be dependent on your posting. But generally don't expect your job to be a typical 9 to 5 kind of office job. Also expect some of your public holidays and weekends to be burnt for adhoc deployments, operations or major events.
      So yeap in a nutshell a career in SPF isn't that bad if you have the passion and interest and can handle the irregular hours that come with it.

    • @JunwenTeng
      @JunwenTeng 22 дні тому

      @@TheLifeInvestors what are increments normally like for both junior and senior officers if they are a standard grader?

    • @TheLifeInvestors
      @TheLifeInvestors  22 дні тому +1

      Hmm for junior officers the annual increment for a standard grading is about $170 ish. From what I know increments for INSP rank is about $200 ish. For ASP and above I have no idea because no one has readily shared that info with me before😂
      Each rank also has its own salary range, meaning that once you hit the maximum salary for your rank, there would be no annual increment for you.

    I served NS in the police force from May 2016 to May 2018 under TransCom and didn't like it one bit because the senior intakes (also NSFs) would takan the junior intakes for every mistake no matter big or small mistake. Not sure how is it like now because it has been 6 years since I ORD. Then when we complain to our supervisor (there is 1 regular officer handling each intake), they just said ya we will look into it but then the takan never stops.
    We would have our breaks in the MRT police rooms and that's where they would takan us. Like scolding loudly, asking us to stand up after we eat, cannot sit down after eating and we had to stand up for the rest of our break time after food. There are also other instances whereby the seniors would unholster their loaded revolver and point the laser at our face and say things like "IF YOU MAKE ONE MORE MISTAKE, IT'LL BE YOUR LAST!"
    After becoming a senior intake when the seniors ORD, I never treated my junior intakes like that.

    I am looking to sign on as a senior officer after getting my degree. I like to serve the community and purpose of SPF, but not sure if this is the right path for me. I have heard a lot even from current Inspectors that to put it simply it really is underpaid and overworkedm, but they enjoy it as they find it fulfilling. My NS days as an infantry trooper in the SAF was so unimpactful that I wished I enlisted into the SPF and did more ground work which can directly impact the community. Can current SPF officers/ex officers or if you have friends working in SPF give me some advice? Any advice would be appreciated, thank you :)

    • @TheLifeInvestors
      @TheLifeInvestors  6 днів тому +1

      Hmm I think you have to find out what job is of interest to you or at least something you don't mind doing. While I don't deny that there is some meaning in doing Police work, at least for the first few years, you have to also consider the practical realities of the job.
      For instance, are you ok with working shift for at least the first 6 years of your SPF career? This means that there will definitely be some sacrifices when it comes to your social and family life, in part due to the nature of shift work and also partially due to major deployments on certain significant public holidays (National Day, Year-end countdown etc.). Also when it comes to workload, be mentally prepared that your work (in investigation branch) for the first 3 years of your SPF career would likely be never-ending. All this to be paid with a gross monthly salary of around mid $5K+ to $6K+ (after a few years) excluding bonuses.
      If you feel that the above is at least manageable, then perhaps a career in SPF might be suitable for you.

      Besides technical skills can always pick up as and when required (can also make use of Skillsfuture credits😂) but life skills some individuals don't always get to gain or develop them.

      @TheLifeInvestors most blinded by the Rank

    • @TheLifeInvestors
      @TheLifeInvestors  25 днів тому

      Yea true but can't really blame them when a higher rank equates to higher pay and also a sense of 'progression'. This is also very much the same in the private sector with designations such as manager, snr manager, regional lead etc.
      I think at the end of the day as individuals we all need something to work towards and at the same time feel adequately rewarded for the journey towards such goals, be it in the form of monetary or other benefits.

    Cant speak any better for myself.. in the same exact situation with you as a MHA-SPF FT scholar but the worse part is having a PhD offer but couldnt pursue due to the 4-year bond. Not valued and not being posted to meaningful posting relevant to your skillsets and degree expertise. The downfall of SPF being non-specialised and more or a generalist.

    • @TheLifeInvestors
      @TheLifeInvestors  7 днів тому

      Yea I think the civil service as a whole values a generalist more than a specialist and for good reason, given the various different departments/ministries and the multi-faceted aspect of policy making and execution.
      On the bright side as a scholar, your career path would likely expose you to more opportunities, be it in SPF, the civil service in general or the private sector, not to mention that you also likely have a masters degree. So in that sense, you can use the 4-year bond as a sort of evaluation period to see what you really want to do.
      In any case, I wish you all the best in your career!

      Besides the main point of the video was to let viewers know my reasons for leaving a job that I was in for such a long time and maybe relate to those who are currently in the same predicament as me (whether to leave their jobs or not). So you could technically replace SPF with any other career and the crux of the video would still remain the same.

      Yea, I think any organisation with a hierarchical setup would be prone to the 'ass-kissing' culture, since everyone wants to earn that rank and with it the higher salary. More so when the same higher-ups have an influence on your performance grading and the subsequent bonus you get.
