Wait i thought her point was that you could have anything in moderation. Carrots aren’t inherently bad for you, but if you only rely on carrots your health won’t be the best, just as chocolate isn’t good for you, but if you eat it once in a while it’s fine for you. Your body takes in food at its own equilibrium so eating everything in moderation is the best way to live is what I thought she said. From someone who always struggled with my weight, and knowing that she did too, I think she said this because often people feel guilty after eating something that isn’t healthy, so saying that “food is just food” helps remove that guilt and take a more neutral approach to what we eat. I don’t think that her campaigning against the video was right, especially in that tumblr thread, but I’m just very confused why everyone keeps on pointing to this quote??

As a fat guy who got bullied and is trying to lose weight, I also don't agree with what illy told in that part. I got my fair share of bullying through highschool but the same bullys (who btw were also mostly ripped or lean) did not just bully me for fun, on graduation day, one of them did come up to me and stated how they are sorry for whatever I had to go through and encouraged me to start losing weight. And honestly, I don't blame him, I was way beyond a healthy BMI, my back hurt constantly sitting and studying and my stamina is no good. I have been lifting, following a proper diet and trying to make leaps in my life as well. I have been the kind of fat Illy calls "healthy fat" when I was in ninth grade, and NOTHING about being fat is healthy, maintaining a healthy BMI and trying to do so has been a rewarding experience for me and I am not stopping until I get there. As a person herself, I agree she might be okay with how she looks, how she feels about her weight. but not everyone. Striving to be fit isn't toxic, ITS FUCKING SELF LOVE

I went on a binge of his channel when this happened and I think people are just getting the wrong idea from the thumbnails and titles, as they often absolutely come off as the typical right-wing lazy UA-cam content. But if you actually watch the videos, he has mostly centrist takes, and they’re almost always rational and well-researched. And they’re often much less extreme and political than the titles/thumbnails make them out to be.

What I think she meant was that you can still enjoy food while knowing it’s unhealthy. I know a common thing that a lot of people recovering from EDs think is “food is food” which helps with the constant obsession they might have with trying to achieve the “right” diet. But with her logic, it’s going backwards. A carrot is healthier than chocolate, but you shouldn’t let that knowledge stop you from enjoying the chocolate.
(And by the way, I’m mainly talking about restrictive EDs like Anorexia or Orthorexia!) Also, as a personal anecdote, I never had an ED, but I started having horrible thoughts about how fat I was and how the other kids were lean and not fat like me. I never restricted my food, but I hated every bite. All I thought about when I ate was how much it must be fattening me up. Started when I was 9 and ended at around 12-13? I still get the thoughts, though. Have to remind myself why food is needed. I wrote this just to give folks an idea of why people say “food is food” to themselves, and to rant a little, I guess.

I was going to say. Erasing the concept of “good” and “bad” foods is something people with eating disorders learn in therapy. There’s a time and a place for all foods, and anything can have its place in a healthy diet.
The thing is that Think Before You Sleep didn't just innocently criticise Illy's video. He edited Illy's video and go re-watch both of them if you need to. In think before you sleep's video, right after the line: "no matter how many calories, carbs and sugars", the video skips. Sean decided to remove the part where Illy says "UNLESS YOU HAVE LIFE-THREATENING ALLERGIES OR DIETARY RESTRICTIONS TO FOLLOW". So no, he didn't just criticise her, he changed her entire argument and point of view. This line (if you couldn't already tell) implies that there are some exceptions to her statement, such as diabetes, different diets recommended to morbidly obese people &c. This phrase "dietary restrictions", rules out the more serious situations that Sean (think before you sleep) is referring to, when he says that Illy's video will cause obese people to eat themselves into an early grave. Another thing is that Illy doesn't say anything about Fat Acceptance or Body Positivity, in the entire video she talks about body NEUTRALITY which you should know the definition of. Illy is talking about morality. She's saying that eating a carrot doesn't necessarily make you a "good" person and that eating a piece of chocolate doesn't make you a "bad" one. Body Neutrality is approved by literally every single Medical specialist and Physiologist dealing with patients (especially teens) with eating disorders. All she's doing in that video, is pushing back diet culture which is the leading cause people dieting, DESPITE ALREADY BEING AT A HEALTHY WEIGHT. Sean doesn't "criticise" shit, he neglects to accurately portray the central themes of her video and removes it from all context. The argument of "why couldn't she just ignore it" is just upright fucking stupid. Im not even gonna dive deep into this, but people were doxxing her because of the video that Sean made so idk do with that as you will.

Gonna play devils advocate: nothing illy said was inherently wrong, it’s just an extremely simplistic version of the truth. Note the specific wording of “inherent” good/ bad foods. Eating 300 carrots a day isn’t necessarily gonna make you healthier, and eating one single marshmallow isn’t gonna make you obese over night. It’s all about balance. You probably shouldn’t be eating marshmallows everyday all day, but eating one on occasion isn’t gonna hurt you, as long as you’re not allergic or something. Allergies are also something to consider. To someone who’s deathly allergic to Carrots, eating a carrot would probably kill them faster than eating nothing but candy everyday. It is true that you should probably have more carrots than you have marshmallows, but again, balance and nuance. She’s a UA-camr who animated videos mainly for kids, this simple sentence she used is technically correct. And you can be fat for multiple reasons, not all are food related. I feel the issue Is conflating obese with being fat, they’re not the same. The same way someone being kinda skinny won’t immediately kill then due to malnutrition is the same way being kinda fat isn’t gonna immediately cause your heart to shut down.
As a former fat kid myself I tuned out of the video the second she did the whole fat acceptance thing. Being fat is both physically and socially bad for you while your a kid and the physical problems only get worse over time. If I never stopped drinking soda and eating junk food I would’ve never lost 30-40 lbs and I’d still be obese and have a worse quality of life. Just go to the gym and change your diet. It’s literally that simple, not easy, but simple.
the thing is.. sometimes a gym alone cannot "change" the issue. Genes are to blame for things like that too, and knowing that and having like a health coach can help you more then stressing out your body that way which can have a reflux effect one yourself. My family constantly complains when I try to get them to work out and change their diet that they have innate health issues that prevent them from losing weight. While this may be true in extreme circumstances it’s not true for the vast majority of people. For example, family has a generally short and stocky build and they’ve used that as an excuse to not work out and change their diet. However, I figured out that this can be a serious strength. Sure I’m 5’9 and have wide hips for dude, but those hips are jacked and I generally put muscle on like a dwarf from lord of the rings, which allows me a ridiculous amount of flexibility, balance, and strength. You can turn your perceived weaknesses into strengths if you work them well enough and in the right manner and most people can do this unless they have a serious condition. American junk food is legitimately disgusting though and I’m happy we can agree on that. Transitioning to a more natural diet while occasionally dipping into fast food and junk was one of the best transitions I’ve ever made. The only problem is that I drink way to much electrolyte water.
@@Evilriku13You don't even need the gym. Just by being in a daily calorie-deficit, your body will have to use your fat reserves to survive. If you eat during 1700 calories a day, your body will compensate the remaining 300 calories (2000 calories is the standard consumption for an adult). Do that daily for 4 months and you will lose 10 kilos worth of fat. Throw in going to the gym daily (with an effective routine) and eating 140 grams of protein daily and you won't get RIPPED, but you'll get a decent amount of muscle. That's what I did and DAMN if it was worth it. The worst part is the beggining, then it gets easier to eat less and go to the gym. It's not that simple as OP said, and you can investigate a good gym routine and a meal plan to optimize it, but it's not rocket science. Train until muscle exhaustment then eat an average of 1.6 * (your bodyweight in KG) of grams of protein a day.

Even outside biological issues, stuff like paramedics/surgons will have issues saving your life in the worst cases -just issues transportation & surgery. "New fat science" found simply that being slightly overweight doesn't immediately kill you. Likely a response to those shitty 90s/2000 trends. Remember all the "oh no! I am 1kg over my ideal weight -I have to starve myself" trends? Sailor Moon, Boomer Comics...etc. You're not going to suffer diabetis the moment you're slightly overweight. Hence the misleading "you can be healthy and fat" Many bodies also distribute fat differently -my family doesn't get bellies, but fat thighs/legs for example. And people also lose weight from person to person. However, it's a limbo dance: too much weight that stays, or even escalates will hurt you. You should neither "just eat" nor "don't eat" -but get a healthy diet and talk to doctors. Sometimes (rapid) weight loss/gain can also relate to health issues (extreme diets/binge eating also stresses the body as it THINKS you're sick). point: nutrition is very complicated.

i think what she was trying to do was not promote a "bad food" and "good food" mind set which can lead to guilt around eating. obviously some foods are more nutritious than others and it's not good too eat too much of something that isn't healthy but it's good to have a balance and not restrict yourself. to a point, your size doesn't fully show how healthy you are and being slim doesn't necessarily mean you're making healthy choices and vice versa. it's still odd to try and get people to mass report a video when it's the internet, people are gonna say what they want and as far as i know there wasn't anything incredibly harmful in the video

I am pretty fat, 125kg, but even I am fully aware that I am not healthy. I am going through a lot in life rn, and I hope when I get over with this I could focus on getting myself in a better shape.
My suggestion is try to replace bad habits with good ones. Excersise is important but eating healthy and eating balanced is important too. Treat veggies and fruits like it's the main course and then pretend the unhealthy food is your desert
For people with eating disorders, viewing foods as neutral can help us a lot. This doesn't apply to everyone however, and I really think she should've prefaced this by saying she isn't a medical professional.

I like Illy’s animation style, and she does make Cute videos and all, but by God, does she have some ass takes. I remember in one, she talks about how she has Autism. Except, she doesn’t. She looked up a bunch of random Autism symptoms, never got diagnosed by a Medical health professional, and just self diagnosed herself with Autism. She says she never really fit in, and she had trouble socializing. Which... isn’t proof of Autism. Illy then claimed that she didn’t need a professional diagnosis, because apparently the norms for Autism diagnosis were made by white men or some shit and that makes it unvalid. ??? Vaccines were invented by white men too, and given to white men. Soooo... I don’t really get her logic. On the topic of her fat acceptance video, food is “good” or “bad” because of how healthy it is for you. A single piece of chocolate is objectively worse for you than an equal piece of carrot. Fat acceptance also degrades the past 120 years of medical knowledge telling you that being fat is unhealthy, which is a problem in and off itself. It’s also a bit hypocritical to send your fans to mass report and harass someone, after you claim they did that to you. In short, I think Illy is a good person, but she has some very bad ideas that contradict basic medical science, which can be dangerous.

I’m currently overweight or a fat ass, from years of starving myself and then proceeding to eat bad food. My mental health played a big part in all that. Its hard to stick to a diet and try and be healthy. But it can be done, it’s not a coincidence that obese people get health issues, and even skinny people can have those issues. That why there’s a thing called a healthy weight for your body, a weight that doesn’t put strain on your body from too much fat or just being skin and bones
How can these people not differentiate between not shaming fat people, but also not endorsing being fat and unhealthy? The point should be to not harass and belittle people who are fat. Not to say "Actually being fat and unhealthy are totally fine and healthy foods are just a myth". You don't have to cope about being in a situation where you don't actively lose weight. I know its not always laziness. Mental health and home resources such as better foods aren't always available. But that doesn't mean you have to try and reshape reality either.

Then I realized one of the main reason why it happened was because my mom stopped buying me milk since 5th grade and gave me chocolate drinks instead. Since 1st grade, my mom always made me drink powdered chocolate milk during breakfast and dinner. But when I got to 5th grade, she stopped buying actual powdered milk and bought powdered Cadbury chocolate drinks instead. I never noticed the taste difference and she's one of those parents who put items that she bought from the supermarket into jars so she can immediately throw away the boxes. Because of that, I managed to find out about the Cadbury boxes and pointed out to her about the fact that Cadbury are not milk and she just goes "heh, same thing". Then she explained that she stopped buying the local made powdered chocolate milk since I was in 5th grade and started to buy the Cadbury chocolate drink instead. So for 7 years, she made me drink hot chocolate during breakfast and dinner. Hence I was fat and didn't grow taller much during high school. Like, bless her, I love her so much, but you basically screwed over my middle and high school days lmao. Once I got to uni, I managed to make my own diet plan and lost a significant amount of weight.
I noticed it's a pattern with illy to portray anyone who disagrees as either a Karen or a faceless devil. Other animators have a character to represent disagreeing opinions but they're just plainly drawn. In illys music/singing video she portrayed a neighbor telling her to turn her karaoke down as a Karen, as if noise compliant isn't legitimate? Her view seems to be "you either agree with me or you're a bad person".

Carrots aren’t inherently bad for you, but if you only rely on carrots your health won’t be the best, just as chocolate isn’t good for you, but if you eat it once in a while it’s fine for you. Your body takes in food at its own equilibrium so eating everything in moderation is the best way to live is what I thought she said. From someone who always struggled with my weight, and knowing that she did too, I think she said this because often people feel guilty after eating something that isn’t healthy, so saying that “food is just food” helps remove that guilt and take a more neutral approach to what we eat.

As a fat guy who got bullied and is trying to lose weight, I also don't agree with what illy told in that part. I got my fair share of bullying through highschool but the same bullys (who btw were also mostly ripped or lean) did not just bully me for fun, on graduation day, one of them did come up to me and stated how they are sorry for whatever I had to go through and encouraged me to start losing weight. And honestly, I don't blame him, I was way beyond a healthy BMI, my back hurt constantly sitting and studying and my stamina is no good. I have been lifting, following a proper diet and trying to make leaps in my life as well. I have been the kind of fat Illy calls "healthy fat" when I was in ninth grade, and NOTHING about being fat is healthy, maintaining a healthy BMI and trying to do so has been a rewarding experience for me and I am not stopping until I get there. As a person herself, I agree she might be okay with how she looks, how she feels about her weight. but not everyone. Striving to be fit isn't toxic, ITS FUCKING SELF LOVE

I went on a binge of his channel when this happened and I think people are just getting the wrong idea from the thumbnails and titles, as they often absolutely come off as the typical right-wing lazy UA-cam content. What I think she meant was that you can still enjoy food while knowing it’s unhealthy. I know a common thing that a lot of people recovering from EDs think is “food is food” which helps with the constant obsession they might have with trying to achieve the “right” diet.
But with her logic, it’s going backwards. A carrot is healthier than chocolate, but you shouldn’t let that knowledge stop you from enjoying the chocolate.
(And by the way, I’m mainly talking about restrictive EDs like Anorexia or Orthorexia!)
Also, as a personal anecdote, I never had an ED, but I started having horrible thoughts about how fat I was and how the other kids were lean and not fat like me. I never restricted my food, but I hated every bite. All I thought about when I ate was how much it must be fattening me up. Started when I was 9 and ended at around 12-13? I was going to say. Erasing the concept of “good” and “bad” foods is something people with eating disorders learn in therapy. There’s a time and a place for all foods, and anything can have its place in a healthy diet.
The thing is that Think Before You Sleep didn't just innocently criticise Illy's video. He edited Illy's video and go re-watch both of them if you need to. In think before you sleep's video, right after the line: "no matter how many calories, carbs and sugars", the video skips. Sean decided to remove the part where Illy says "UNLESS YOU HAVE LIFE-THREATENING ALLERGIES OR DIETARY RESTRICTIONS TO FOLLOW". So no, he didn't just criticise her, he changed her entire argument and point of view. This line (if you couldn't already tell) implies that there are some exceptions to her statement, such as diabetes, different diets recommended to morbidly obese people &c. This phrase "dietary restrictions", rules out the more serious situations that Sean (think before you sleep) is referring to, when he says that Illy's video will cause obese people to eat themselves into an early grave.
Another thing is that Illy doesn't say anything about Fat Acceptance or Body Positivity, in the entire video she talks about body NEUTRALITY which you should know the definition of. Illy is talking about morality. She's saying that eating a carrot doesn't necessarily make you a "good" person and that eating a piece of chocolate doesn't make you a "bad" one. Body Neutrality is approved by literally every single Medical specialist and Physiologist dealing with patients (especially teens) with eating disorders. All she's doing in that video, is pushing back diet culture which is the leading cause people dieting, DESPITE ALREADY BEING AT A HEALTHY WEIGHT.
Sean doesn't "criticise" shit, he neglects to accurately portray the central themes of her video and removes it from all context.

Gonna play devils advocate: nothing illy said was inherently wrong, it’s just an extremely simplistic version of the truth. Note the specific wording of “inherent” good/ bad foods. Eating 300 carrots a day isn’t necessarily gonna make you healthier, and eating one single marshmallow isn’t gonna make you obese over night. It’s all about balance. You probably shouldn’t be eating marshmallows everyday all day, but eating one on occasion isn’t gonna hurt you, as long as you’re not allergic or something. Allergies are also something to consider. To someone who’s deathly allergic to Carrots, eating a carrot would probably kill them faster than eating nothing but candy everyday. It is true that you should probably have more carrots than you have marshmallows, but again, balance and nuance. She’s a UA-camr who animated videos mainly for kids, this simple sentence she used is technically correct. And you can be fat for multiple reasons, not all are food related. I feel the issue Is conflating obese with being fat, they’re not the same. The same way someone being kinda skinny won’t immediately kill then due to malnutrition is the same way being kinda fat isn’t gonna immediately cause your heart to shut down.

As a former fat kid myself I tuned out of the video the second she did the whole fat acceptance thing. Being fat is both physically and socially bad for you while your a kid and the physical problems only get worse over time. If I never stopped drinking soda and eating junk food I would’ve never lost 30-40 lbs and I’d still be obese and have a worse quality of life. Just go to the gym and change your diet. It’s literally that simple, not easy, but simple.
the thing is.. sometimes a gym alone cannot "change" the issue. Genes are to blame for things like that too, and knowing that and having like a health coach can help you more then stressing out your body that way which can have a reflux effect one yourself. Otherwise you are totally right that soda and (american) junk food is basically a devil's pill for "ending up like that".

My family constantly complains when I try to get them to work out and change their diet that they have innate health issues that prevent them from losing weight. While this may be true in extreme circumstances it’s not true for the vast majority of people. For example, family has a generally short and stocky build and they’ve used that as an excuse to not work out and change their diet. However, I figured out that this can be a serious strength. Sure I’m 5’9 and have wide hips for dude, but those hips are jacked and I generally put muscle on like a dwarf from lord of the rings, which allows me a ridiculous amount of flexibility, balance, and strength. You can turn your perceived weaknesses into strengths if you work them well enough and in the right manner and most people can do this unless they have a serious condition. American junk food is legitimately disgusting though and I’m happy we can agree on that. Transitioning to a more natural diet while occasionally dipping into fast food and junk was one of the best transitions I’ve ever made. The only problem is that I drink way to much electrolyte water.
@@Evilriku13You don't even need the gym. Just by being in a daily calorie-deficit, your body will have to use your fat reserves to survive. If you eat during 1700 calories a day, your body will compensate the remaining 300 calories (2000 calories is the standard consumption for an adult). Do that daily for 4 months and you will lose 10 kilos worth of fat. Throw in going to the gym daily (with an effective routine) and eating 140 grams of protein daily and you won't get RIPPED, but you'll get a decent amount of muscle. That's what I did and DAMN if it was worth it. The worst part is the beggining, then it gets easier to eat less and go to the gym.
It's not that simple as OP said, and you can investigate a good gym routine and a meal plan to optimize it, but it's not rocket science. Train until muscle exhaustment then eat an average of 1.6 * (your bodyweight in KG) of grams of protein a day.

You should neither "just eat" nor "don't eat" -but get a healthy diet and talk to doctors. i think what she was trying to do was not promote a "bad food" and "good food" mind set which can lead to guilt around eating. obviously some foods are more nutritious than others and it's not good too eat too much of something that isn't healthy but it's good to have a balance and not restrict yourself. to a point, your size doesn't fully show how healthy you are and being slim doesn't necessarily mean you're making healthy choices and vice versa. it's still odd to try and get people to mass report a video when it's the internet, people are gonna say what they want and as far as i know there wasn't anything incredibly harmful in the video

On the topic of her fat acceptance video, food is “good” or “bad” because of how healthy it is for you. A single piece of chocolate is objectively worse for you than an equal piece of carrot. Fat acceptance also degrades the past 120 years of medical knowledge telling you that being fat is unhealthy, which is a problem in and off itself.
It’s also a bit hypocritical to send your fans to mass report and harass someone, after you claim they did that to you.
In short, I think Illy is a good person, but she has some very bad ideas that contradict basic medical science, which can be dangerous.

I’m currently overweight or a fat ass, from years of starving myself and then proceeding to eat bad food. My mental health played a big part in all that. Its hard to stick to a diet and try and be healthy. But it can be done, it’s not a coincidence that obese people get health issues, and even skinny people can have those issues. That why there’s a thing called a healthy weight for your body, a weight that doesn’t put strain on your body from too much fat or just being skin and bones

How can these people not differentiate between not shaming fat people, but also not endorsing being fat and unhealthy? The point should be to not harass and belittle people who are fat. Not to say "Actually being fat and unhealthy are totally fine and healthy foods are just a myth". You don't have to cope about being in a situation where you don't actively lose weight.
I know its not always laziness. Mental health and home resources such as better foods aren't always available. But that doesn't mean you have to try and reshape reality either.

@@kneecap2399 Mine was my mom's fault. From 5th grade to 12th grade, I went from average to very fat. Then I realized one of the main reason why it happened was because my mom stopped buying me milk since 5th grade and gave me chocolate drinks instead.
Since 1st grade, my mom always made me drink powdered chocolate milk during breakfast and dinner. But when I got to 5th grade, she stopped buying actual powdered milk and bought powdered Cadbury chocolate drinks instead.
I never noticed the taste difference and she's one of those parents who put items that she bought from the supermarket into jars so she can immediately throw away the boxes.
She never let me into the kitchen because "boys are reckless and they will mess everything up" until I'm on late 12th grade because she finally thought that I've matured enough and can help sorting out food.
Because of that, I managed to find out about the Cadbury boxes and pointed out to her about the fact that Cadbury are not milk and she just goes "heh, same thing". Then she explained that she stopped buying the local made powdered chocolate milk since I was in 5th grade and started to buy the Cadbury chocolate drink instead.
So for 7 years, she made me drink hot chocolate during breakfast and dinner. Hence I was fat and didn't grow taller much during high school.
Like, bless her, I love her so much, but you basically screwed over my middle and high school days lmao. Once I got to uni, I managed to make my own diet plan and lost a significant amount of weight.

I noticed it's a pattern with illy to portray anyone who disagrees as either a Karen or a faceless devil. Other animators have a character to represent disagreeing opinions but they're just plainly drawn. In illys music/singing video she portrayed a neighbor telling her to turn her karaoke down as a Karen, as if noise compliant isn't legitimate? Her view seems to be "you either agree with me or you're a bad person".
