SmallHD 702 Touch: My favourite monitor EVER!

- SmallHD hired me to make a video on their new 7" monitor the "702 Touch". I expected to just make a short video explaining it, what I wasn't expected was it to be the perfect monitor for my work.
Yes, I know you doubt me as it is a sponsored video but I promise you I mean it, watch the video to see why. I put a huge amount of effort into this one and it includes some fancy new toys in it including the Gudsen Moza Slypod and the Venus Laowa Probe lens.
Pick up the monitors and the gear used below:

The style of this video is dangerously engaging. 👌💯
thanks sir!
cant believe you got Phillip to do your channel video. I loved him in it!
@@philipbloom is the 702 Touch... still your favorite monitor in August 2020?
Alexander Torro yep.
@@philipbloom Would you wait to see if a monitor comes out capable of 120p monitoring in 2021 or just get this (for an FX3)? Love your video and MZED course btw.
Every PB video is a delightful reminder of how to keep your shooting and editing simple, elegant and engaging. Master of ‘Review Documentaries.’ Feel free to take that phrase.
I was going to say how well made this was, but you said it so much better :P
Just call him CINEMATIC GOD!!
“Where they don’t speak English ... like America” 😂🤣😂🤣 👍🏼
Well. We don't really. We speak American English. But in all fairness across the Great British Isles there is a veritable smorgasbord of dialects of the 'Queen's English' as well, some of them considerably more difficult to decipher than American English. You can start with Cockney in London. :D
@@trevorpinnocky only difficult for you heathens! We understand them all but obviously how I speak is the correct way even if father is a cockney.
@@trevorpinnocky I was only quoting Philip for a bubble, I had no intention of upsetting you septic tanks ... 😉👍🏻
Unreal
@@Jamesmatthews what is ? It's only a joke, surely everybody can see that ... right ?
Yet another Phillip Bloom video that makes me appreciate quality start to finish...
every single video is a gem. Jesus freaking Christ.
I still can't get over how well edited and directed this video is. Thank you for your work, it's helped tremendously.
A beautiful video from start to finish, as usual. Always look forward to these. Thanks for making them, Philip.
I loved visuals throughout this, showing a continuous nod to the nature of these screens! I've yet to have the pleasure of shooting with a SmallHD, having only used Atomos for the addition of external recording, but I've always admired SmallHD's OS and more appealing design. The improvements within the tech over the years for a tool that has essentially been doing the same thing are equally impressive.
Always appreciate your videos! You're my go to when it comes to anything camera related. Doesn't matter if it's a review or sponsored video, as you said you don't do sponsored videos for products you don't use/endorse which is rare now a days on this platform. I was debating between the touch and the bright but thanks to this video I'll be going with the 702 touch. Thanks again PB!
I cannot get enough of how you make your videos. I almost want to call them short films because of how they drive their own mini narrative. They are so warm, welcoming, and altogether aesthetically pleasing that it encourages me to keep making my own stuff.
Thank you.
Seth M thank you! If I don’t enjoy making and watching them why should I expect anyone else it. I make what I want to see! 🙂
Love your use of that laowa lens, keep up the great work Philip
Beautiful edit, thanks for sharing all this info! Nice to see the history of Small HD too. I also started with the DP4. Happy days!
I love that Philip Bloom makes these videos to show how much he genuinely enjoys filmmaking yet make them very informative
This video was beautifully shot,
Great video PB. Been watching for many years. Loved the look of this one! 702 Touch looks great, i'm already a sucker for them with multiple 702 brights, 703 ultra and 2403.
This is comforting to hear, just picked one up myself.
This might be the most well shot review video you've ever posted. All of the macro angles of the monitors are simply gorgeous.
Also, I think we have the 702 Bright at the TV studio I work at. I only ever use it to test video signals. Now, I will have to play around with it!
yeah, that probe lens is all the rage for macros on yt at the moment
Mr PB, the absolute OG. Great video, love the music you’ve used, very You 👌🏻
I have no idea how I haven't come across your channel ages ago. Absolutely love your videos!
You glorious bugger Mr B.
Product videos don't get much better than that!
Another fantastic video. Thanks Mr Bloom and cat!
I have been watching Philip Bloom since 2009 since 5D Mark II time, I feel everything Philip makes is Gold - just love his work
Thank you for sharing your talents... and opinions. I always look forward to watching your videos.
This video is so well made. If there was a contest for these I would vote it no. 1. Thank you.
I nearly shouted 'bravo, encore!' at the screen. Such a great vid, and it really looks like an incredible option for a monitor.
Nick Kelly Thank you!
I'm always hearing such good stuff about SmallHD monitors. I went with a bit cheaper one, but I pay pick up a smaller 5" some day.
That was a work of art!
The quality and engagement in your videos is always high, but this was on an entirely different level altogether. Might be among the best ones you've done to date! Well done, sir!
PS: Lollipop is such a cutie!
Defiant Films thank you :)
Wow, what an awesome love story! Such a great story telling, personality, visuals, senses, sounds design, all amazing. Looking to rent Smallhd 702 bright as my first ever monitor for next week, so was searching for reviews, manuals, tips, etc. Haven't expected to find such a great monitors love story! :) :) :)
Will watch again later on. So impressed and inspired!
Want to let you know that in addition to the great review, I truly appreciate the effort you put into the aesthetics.
Norm Clare thanks Norm. Very much appreciated :)
Stunning, awesome job!
Keaton Nye thank you
Thank you
This video is beautiful. Great work man
Tommy Callaway thank you!
Top Video as always Mr Bloom. I do like the clarity of your opinions.
I have a very similar history to yourself.. though I think my eye sight requires a 17" monitor as an on-board now!
For what it's worth, my opinion is the same and different on SmallHD. Been a long time user and had about 5 different models over the years.. Always loved the screen quality, but never been a fan of their interface... buttons and wheels and especially joysticks failing.. and as always is the case when you're miles from home... [not a great fan of one button rules them all!]
So nice to see the touch screen will fix that problem :) and even better with all the other bits and bobs this model offers.
Keep up the enjoyable conversations.
Someone had some creative fun with that Laowa lens 🥰👍🏻
Big thumbs up. I could watch your review of a frying pan, I'm just glad that what you do cover happens to be stuff I'm also interested in.
i can't help but feel whatever small hd payed you for this video, they got a bargain deal because this "sponsored video" was actually a captivating film about a 46 year old british man, with fading eyesight, sharing his story about his relationship with a gadget that he's enthusiastic about. Really incredibly shot film. I hope PB got a decent payday, so that he can one day stop exploiting his cats, parading them around in his videos 😏
vUvu vUvu thank you. Sadly 48 😔
Had a good chuckle on the prop displacement and attempt to replace it. One for the highlight reel. Just got a BMPCC4K and looking at the SmallHD for monitor but thinking the 702 on this camera may be a bit clunky in spite of all the great features. Was leaning toward the 5 inch model. Now you’ve got me thinking.
Despite the sponsorship, this does look like a great choice in monitors. Thanks, Mr. Bloom.
I’ve been a fan of your work since I saw you make a short movie with 2 Barbie doll cameras on DigitalRev. Thanks for all you do for us in the creative field,
morgan nelson thanks!
SmallHD asked you to make a video about their new monitor... and you made them a love letter.
Max Roberts quite possibly
8:56 That's what she said.
Thanks for the review, Philip!
I agree SmallHD makes a great set of monitors. I bought the Ninja V5 and it's nice but the 702 would be my choice as well and I have the 703UB & the FocusHD. Great video Philip and A little bird told me SmallHD might be coming out with a recorder soon. I hope so because i really like their Products.
Nice use of the probe lens!
This one I really enjoyed, great.
I love watching your reviews! It’s like watching good friend walk me through the features and functions. Also love the nostalgia since I have a similar background and have experienced the same evolution of gear. Don’t change a thing!
P.S. I think you triggered a flashback.
I got absolutely no need for one of these, but I want it now. Thanks!
Actually I just found out I totally do need one of these. I have a UA-cam channel and I just found I have to redo footage because I didn't get focus right on my latest video. I use a Nikon D850 and shoot at 4K because I just don't like the look of my Canon 80D. Nikon auto focus is unusable and because I am a one man outfit, I can't really see what I am doing. Soooo, I just bought a SmallHD Focus 7 ...Hopefully that will help me up the look of my future videos! Thanks!
I was worried there wasn't going to be any cats involved, but you made up for it at the end.
In all seriousness, great video as always. I've been using SmallHD stuff for a while now and I can second their quality.
Thanks. The plan was to put them throughout but it kept ruining the flow. At least Lollipop was on the wallpaper a few times!
You spent so much time on this. I’m so impressed. Gonna have to get one so i can see it in the California sun 😎
Dave Maze show off
If only they'd bring it back!
Best Ad ever. He he. Great watch as usual. Thanks.
Great review. I will pony up for a decent monitor next year, thanks for the info...
At one point I was drifting somewhere and realized I’m listening Clair de lune 😊 and I had no clue what you were talking about for the past few minutes
As a 1st AC, I only pull with Small HD monitors. Focus assist can be wildly inaccurate on most monitors, confusing specular highlights as “in focus”, which is why I use peaking. Once you learn the exact look and how to dial in intensity on peaking strength based on certain lens character, level of shallowness and darkness of a room I know how to use it like a 3rd hand. Small HD is the only monitor that I trust honestly when I’m in crazy scenarios, such as round front LOMO anamorphic 100mm wide open on the Sony Venice’s full frame. I’m pulling eyelash vs eyeball at some points then when I need critical reference. My biggest caveat of small HD monitors is how hot they get, just like Teradek, it is insane sometimes. My personal preference is using 98 Wh Gold Mount batteries on the plates. Been using a Cine 7 on this show I’m on currently, but going to buy a 702 Touch, thanks for pushing me over the edge to make the decision!
Most focus pullers I work for now seem to have gone 1303 with all this large format work. Especially on shows and movies. Any reason you stick to 7”?
Currently considering picking this up for tvc work here and there for it’s price point and portability.
Man this was an entertaining video.
Nice use of a "probe" lens! Beautiful shot.
I feel like I just got a masterclass in setting up beautiful b roll! Thank you for an amazing video, incredibly helpful. A tack cloth will get that pesky dust off those monitors, no troubles at all Philip :) Thanks again ! and yes definitely the correct pronunciation of "Aluminium" agreed.
I keep it real with a bit of dust and cat hair! 🤣
Thanks for the lovely comment!
Simply a work of art. Maybe that's why the UA-cam algorithm hasn't picked it up.
Jim Makos really? Doesn’t it like pretty things?
@@philipbloom judging from my recommended and trending feed, it doesn't. Or maybe I'm getting too old for this world!
Very lovely
You look good in glasses man!! Great review as always. It feels like an occasion for me when you upload-- crack a beer, it's movie tiiiiime. Haha
Brilliant! And the background music is very good, as usual.
P.S.: Lovely cats.🐱
Shinil Payamal Thank you!
Good vibes from Germany ❤️
Underrated !!! Big time
YEAH YEAH YEAH :) Friday Night Bloom
I retract my previous statements, stand corrected AND still love the videos as usual...and I'd be considering this monitor in the future...though for now external recording attracts me more :)
Dawwal Creative hey for certain cameras there is a big benefit! Canon EOS-R and Nikon Z for example all get 10 bit from it. It’s the 8 bit to 10 bit that makes the huge difference :)
@@philipbloom Absolutely! Thanks so much for all the replies! A bit star struck..but in a non cringey way...Love your work and your elevation of UA-cam content. You make art and UA-cam needs more of it! Cheers!
Brilliantly amazing video, makes me wanna get one and use it instead of my Atomos Ninja Inferno :D
GODDAMNIT! I'm on a diet and you had me pop popcorn for this.
😅
I was about to admonish you for the lack of feline content in this video but you saved it at the end. Well done, sir
Ideal for the new Blackmagic Design 6K which is good for recording internally anyway. Pity the big in-built screen on the back is wasted and sitting there using battery.
Hope your back is doing well!
Have you found that the screen quality tends to degrade over time though? I owned a 702 Bright but the colours got pretty mushy after just over a year. The store owner told me that it is an issue of the LEDs in the screen degrading over time. Not sure if you have experienced the same issue?
What a pro, great video. I don’t even want a monitor I just want to make videos like this gangster 👍🏽👍🏽
In terms of 4K, you are right that we do not need a native 4K resolution, but I would argue that we do need a 4K input because the image does look sharper. All of my monitors that accept 4K and down converts to 1080p is much sharper and it makes it super easy to see focus.
raredreamfootage sure but that’s not my point was it? With a. 4K input you can punch in for focus clearer.
well put philip
Amazing video per usual!
quick question 702 touch or indie 7? i don’t know if you have any input on this but I thought I’d ask!
having a tough time comparing and seeing if the 702 is worth the extra money//if i would use the full potential compared to the indie 7. thanks in advance!
I’m actually picking up my first monitor next week. I’m torn between the Shinobi and the SmallHD Focus 5.
The price should help you! The Shinobi is also very good!
I've heard a lot of complain about the screen cracking a lot on the SmallHD Focus 5. anyone else having this problem before I purchase this? and to Phillip Bloom, I know this is about Monitors but WOW what kind of lens did use to film this video?
Phillip, as always an excellent breakdown of all the specs and features. I would definitely go for this model for a Monitor-only situation. My question to you, is which option would you recommend for Monitor/Recorder for a Canon EOS R? Thank you again...
TechSavvyDaddy ninja v is the only choice.
Philip, you made me buy a canon 600D, a Tokina 11-16, a drone, etc, but with this kind of video i’m gonna buy 3 of these monitors!!! 😂
Does it represent exposure correctly at 1500 NITS? I used to own the older 702 BRIGHT and at full brightness it over exposed the image even though the recording wasn't.
raredreamfootage never ever ever ever judge exposure on your image. That’s what scopes are for!!!!
Does it have tap to focus capability
Phillip, beautiful video as usual. One Q: what about overheating?I heard this is the problem with this monitor. Apparently it get very very hot to the touch after only 10 mins of use up there in "those countries where they don't speak english". Any comments? Based in your experience and this video I am inclined to get it but the issue of the temperature is holding me back. Cheers.
Can we output the footage with all the effects applied on the output?
I own a 702 OLED that i use for work, as a Focus puller. Whenever stationary on sticks (usually indoors or on jobs with little movement) the setup is 702OLED, Teradek of some sort and a WCU4 or SXU. The few times we're actually on the go outdoors and i have a handset with monitor, i simply rent a 703 Bolt to go with a WCU4. Love their monitors, but I cannot stand fingerprints (plus norwegian winters demand gloves, and that's a no go for touch screens) so the 702 touch is no for me, even though i don't doubt for a second that it is wonderful.
Mathias Ertnaes good point. 703 probably the best.
I would love a review of the new smallhd action 5 they just released!
don't have one am afraid.
@@philipbloom ok, I had to come to your page first before considering to buy and now that I seen you trust the brand, I do as well. Thank you for your reviews and honesty
Quality video as always. At this moment in time how do you think this compares to the new Atomos shinobi 7? I’m assuming since this is a full on professional monitor that the colour accuracy is as good as they say? I find that the Ninja V is quite a bit off :-/
Cheers. Not seen the shinobi 7
hello mr.bloom , works good on the kinefinity ? dont konw if i go for the kinemonitor or this one and use that sdi connection
Victor Carneiro yep. Not tried the new lineman yet. Original ones isn’t good

Isaac Rojas yep
8:58 Good old Sid James ;-)
Ian Wilkinson glad someone mentioned it!
What is the threaded ball mount used at 3:08 ? I really need something like this and I can't find the name of it .. Thanks :)

@@philipbloom ooh alright, I'll check their website! Thank you for your answer, I loved the video by the way, very nice and instructive!
May I ask what the red monitor batteries are? I love to red color. Thanks.
Did you get your hands on the Indie 7? Looks exactly the same but 709 instead of P3, and only 1000 nits. Not sure it's worth comparing, except that the 702 touch is a few years older. Maybe older is better?
this is the latest Small HD monitor that I have.
Hey Philip! Just wondering if you ever played with the BM5 from Portkeys. It has something that I really feel I personally NEED from a monitor, and that is to control the camera from the monitor. Do you think that SmallRig will ever get onto that?
William Stewart SmallHD you mean. Yes their new cine line do control certain cameras. I have the BM5. It’s a nice monitor. Too small screen for me and lots of issues that need fixing. It’s got potential though
@@philipbloom Thanks for getting back, I've only used the Atomos system so far and I really like their OS and layout.. So If i get the chance to try a SmallHD I'm sure i'll like it too, maybe more ;) (p.s isnt SmallRig also SmallHD? always wondered)
William Stewart no they are very different companies!
@@philipbloom You know what, I had no idea. Thanks. Genuinely thought they were the same..... the more you know (lardy dah da daaaah)
Does the SmallHD 702 Touch 7" On-Camera Monitor allow touch to focus on a Sony A7S III ?
No sony camera lets you use an external touch screen other than your phone with their app.
@@philipbloom Thanks heaps Philip. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I really love your work. It usually takes a while to watch your videos because I have to stop and show my wife your cats.
I mean its hard to make any arguments about shilling for smallHD when they are the best in their pricerange.
It's one of the very few small monitors where I can accurately guess lighting on without scopes and lightmeters.
Now THAT'S what you get when you pay a pro to make a video for you holy shiz insane video!
It felt like I was on LSD... In a good way.
good video!! :) but why is your favorite monitor the 702 touch and not the cine7 touch?
Flo undso because it’s much more money and offers me basically features I don’t use such as Alexa compatibility.
But does it take double A’s
Great Vid, Cat Dad!
Could i change touch settings of Fx6 using monitor?
you are thinking or a different small hd monitor which has the ability to change SOME camera settings. Not the FX6 yet though
@@philipbloom yes Sir. And is it possible in Fx9 ? A firmware update only?
