Hello. Loved your video. I'm looking into running a similar set up but I'm using a nikon d850 (im mostly a stills person). I don't know if I'm just dumb and can't find it or I missed it but where is the link that shows how you attach the "cheese plate" to the ronin S? Also, will the metal frame around the camera fit a larker camera like mine (D5 sized)?

How you considered the dual handle for the Ronin S?
EACHSHOT has a pretty good option if you're looking for a more comfortable way to shoot weddings.
You just clip it on the Ronin S and you get to keep the tripod foot on. It also comes with two mounting clamps for a good $179.
Can you explain how you attached the HDMI couple to the cheeseplate? Trying to figure out the cleanest way to run hdmi from my Focus 5 to the camera without having any tension but also keeping it tucked away.

What kind of cage for the camera do you use?
Hi, I was waiting for the Ronin-S setup, I mean the complete setup with both the cables: cable 1- from camera to Ronin-S and 2- from camera to monitor. In my situation with the Sony A7S II the signal on my APURTURE Fine HD monitor goes to black when I push rec button on Ronin-S. Is the SmallHD monitor working in my situation: Sony A7S II + Ronin-S + SmallHD monitor + Push the record button on the Ronin-S, that's the question.
Great review and beautiful footage! I would definitely like to try one of these out as well. I currently use the Ninja V and Inferno with my GH5's. However on shoots where I dont need to record externally I think this would be a great option.

this wedding is actually using our newest LUT collection that we are working on. It's more of a vibrant fine art pack that gives more of a high end luxury look to footage. Excited to release it in the next month or so!

I've been getting problems with the Focus 7 paired with 5DMIV, C200 and C100MII. The picture is choppy when panning and tilting. The same camera output settings and HDMI cable were used with a NINJA V with no problems. Did you experience this problem with your unit? I already tried 2 units to no avail. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

I was looking at getting the Focus 5 for my ronin S for weddings but now idk what to get 😭😂 I might have to get the 7. It just seems really big.
If you need that extra brightness and clarity, you won't regret getting the 7.

I don't use it very often either, but I'll occasionally use it to move to another position. Have you found settings that allow you to move it yourself without the joystick? Thanks!

My eyes aren't as good anymore at 54 and I love my Atomos Ninja 7" BUT, I also have the FOCUS 5" and great for setting up my GH4's that don't have wave form like my GH5 and GH5S.
Bigger is always better for accuracy. It's just, useability and a personal choice.
Is it weather sealed or water resistant?

When I've done this on an other monitor, the screen went black...unplug the MCC-C cable and the video comes back. Cheers

Great review! I don’t know about this though, for the same price you can get the Ninja V. Yeah you lose two inches but gain more functionality. In the end I guess it comes down to which do you want? More screen or more functionality.

The NinjaV is a toy compared to SmallHD monitors, add to that that is is so unreliable that I would neber take a NinjaV to a critical shoot, especially not a wedding.

I own the original focus and it's awesome but screen is so reflective. Hopefully this new one with the new brightness helps with that reflection.

Dude I’m looking all over the place to get myself that front facing monitor mounted setup you have for my Sony a7iii and my ronin s. Can you send me links to all the adapters and mounts I need to be able to mount my monitor infront of the ronin exactly like you have it. I can’t seem to find it in your description. I bought a hot shoe mount but it’s off to the side. You seem to have way more than just a cheese plate to be able to have it wrapped around like that. Thank in advance man!

Great little monitor. Shame it's discontinued. I've ordered a 702 Touch instead. Quick question... how are you focusing on the GH5 on the gimbal? Does it have reliable AF or are you just using hyperfocus distance and using a deep aperture? Cheers!
hey Gione, we now film on the S1 and use autofocus here and there. If not, we set the focus and maintain the same distance from the subject on a gimbal.
Is it just me, or does the bezel look disproportionally larger than most other recent monitors?

the only problem is connecting the ronin s to the gh5 to use the follow focus wheel. the screen on the gh5 will go black if you use the focus wheel AND the smallhd monitor at the same time. but we don't use the focus wheel so we don't experience this issue.

I noticed that the colors on the monitor aren’t accurate out of the box with the GH5. Do you have adjustment you made?
I made another video on SmallHD Calibration and profiles you should check out ;) The Focus 7 was closer than the Focus 5 was out of the box but I still made adjustments.
White In Revery Yes, I have seen that video numerous times and it helped me calibrate my Focus 5 monitor! I tried using those settings with the Focus 7 and the image didn’t look right though
How do you use manual focus with the voightlander lenses while on the ronin s?

using Simmond I believe is the name. Its an off brand of the SLR Magic Variable ND.
Ordered the cheese plate you have listed, but doesn't line up at all with the side screws of the Ronin-S. Is there another part in-between the Ronin handle and plate?

two issues you did not address: can it power the camera like the 5 inch does? does it work with Ronis-S unlike the 5 inch?
yes it can power the camera if you have a dummy battery for your particular model. It definitely works with the Ronin S just like the 5in does. I released a newer video about my complete setup with the Panasonic S1 on the Ronin S and the SmallHD Focus 7 monitor.
Can you share with us where to buy the thin HDMI cable please?

What is the price?
I just got back from a job and could not get the Small HD focus 5 to show the full screen of the A7III as it does on my a6500, and I noticed it happened to you as well. I tried 4k and 1080 60p and the monitor would only show the mirrored image of the a7III with the menu's and not the full screen of the A7III? Anybody know why that is? I shoot on my a6500 a lot and it does use the whole monitor space...
that's a limitation of the camera. you have to change your HDMI Info settings in your camera. You will either have the image display the way it currently is or it can show full screen with no controls on the image. Those are your two options with that camera :)

If there is ANY lag, you can't tell. Extremely minimal at best. It's never been an issue for us.

Dang it! The 5” OLED version was in my BH cart! Now I’m torn... how could you do this to me??? 😜
Film Mavericks the oled is only 350nits bright. You can’t see that screen properly if shooting outside at all. You would need a screen guard to see it. It’s great for commercial shoots with controlled lighting though.
White In Revery ya I saw that after watching this too. So that changes the conversation again. I don’t want to be limited to indoors for sure.
hey any way you would know why when I have the Ronin s connected to my Sony a7r4 and the small HD when I hit record the screen goes black but it's still recording. When I disconnect the small HD everything goes back to normal

the gimbal ended up having some glitches after many hours in the snow/rain, but the monitor held up better and had no issues whatsoever.
I hope the SDI version will come out soon....
if there is enough demand for it they might add that feature ;)

Wait, the ronin follow focus works with the gh5/18-35?!?! I went on the kit page and saw that and my jaw dropped. I ordered the focus motor specifically for the combo just I just assumed it didn’t work 🤦🏻♂️
It does work most of the time, but sometimes Ive had a couple glitches where the focus goes to infinity and I have to switch it to manual mode. So it doesn't work 100% for me but still great to have.

Where is the footy of me falling waist deep into the snow?
I think for hybrid shooting 7inch too much, i prefer using tools for focusing and exposure like peaking and waveform,for that big screen no needed. For frameing 5 inch is good enough...with ronin added it looks like monster rig to use all day.

the smallhd focus 7 is 8bit with 2 bit dithering to get to 10bit preview. I believe that is the same as the atomos shinobi as well.
Sooo I did this. The plate is blocking the power button. Am I doing something wrong?
I can push the button with my left finger while holding it with my right. I can't access the power button with my right finger because of the placement. Can you access it at all? It might be a little tight but I can still access it.

Is 1000 nits enough brightness for shooting in summertime in the middle of the day?
eye the moment yes! We shot the day before this wedding out in the snow and full sun and my eyes were squinting and I could still see the screen.

Feelworld has a 2000nit monitor for $400, records 4k, 24fps..
it does but doesn't support LUTS which is extremely important for me and the operating system is not touch screen and requires buttons making it slow for run and gun. Also some of their monitors have not held up well and have reports of screens going bad. You get what you pay for in the end.@@Diminish12

The whole time I was watching I was thinking it was going to be $1100 or more but surprisingly $699.
yeah the price is pretty awesome for the quality in my opinion.
SmallHD Focus works for him, but i think theres better Options for the $$. Thats a $700 monitor, 1000nits, 4k 60 and 7 screen no battery or handle included like the SmallHD 5"... Atomos Shinobi $400 monitor, 1000nits, 4k 24 and 5" screen.. or if your on a budget Feelworld FW279 $260 2000nit 4k 24 and 7" screen.. the Other monitors already have 1000nit and 2000nit brightness for less. SmallHD 7 is the only 1 that has 4k 60.. if thats more important for u, then go for it.. Shinobi does 10bit, Feelworld 8bit.. all have Zebras, peaking, waves etc.. smallHD has Luts.. in my Opinion unless u really need 4k 60 and a 7" screen. The smallHD fails to the other 2.. if brightness is important to u, im sure u also consider PPI which SmallHD and Feelword have 324PPI VS Shinobi 427PPI. Screen accuracy matters also.. so ask yourselves if 7" 4k 60 is worth an extra $300.. just giving my Opinion on Monitors cause i was also in the market for 1. And hoping this shines light on other people looking..
the feelworld monitor is lacking in too many things for me to consider it just for the brightness levels. no luts, horrible OS, cable placements, buttons instead of touchscreen, etc. The Shinobi would be the only other one to consider next to this Focus 7 monitor. Shinobi is 5 in thought and not 7in which is why it is cheaper. Shinobi takes 10bit input but is not an actual 10bit panel for their monitor just like Focus7 so no difference there. I haven't used the Shinobi yet but have heard others that have used it do not like the OS on it compared to SmallHD's. So a difference there. I haven't checked to see if the Shinobi monitor can be calibrated with a color probe or not. That would be important to me as well. Just a few more things to consider in comparison between those monitors. Thanks for the helpful comment.

I think the cage is the SmallRig 2049 and the top handle is also made by SmallRig. He mentions his gear list in the description:

Thanks for the update. Been looking at other options other than using a friction arm. Just doesn't stay in place and comes undone swiveling too much. I need something that locks in better

White In Revery I’m sure it’s worth every dollar but $1499 is the only option considering the lower end option is only 450 nits. That’s about the price of a GH5 is all I’m saying.
