Two points: 1) Never land "flat light" (low-contrast or whiteout) conditions. You got away this time because there wasn't all that much snow. 2) Beware of the surprisingly reduced takeoff power of a normally aspirated engine at altitude. Taking off only 3000' higher than usual is markedly different, at higher altitudes you have even less power and might be unable to take off unless you can go down a slope...
Congratulations! That was bunch of hard work but you clearly put a lot into the design and took a step by step approach. Pilot, designer, you're living life!
So glad you enjoyed the ride. Your hard work will pay off. My first student hours were in Aeronca 7AC Champs on skies. Temps were unstable and if we paused for more than a minute; they'd freeze in place. So keep that in mind when flying with Sylvia. She's too great to walk miles over frozen tundra.
Your wife is great. I can tell that she supports you in your endeavor and loves being around you. I know that everyone is beating you up for no safety gear but its not my place to do that. Take care and fly safe.
@@JonasMarcinko well, if the OSH route doesn't bring you through Nebraska, I'll figure something out - Hell, would love to fly out west and have you show me around. Cheers and be well!
I don't know who was more excited - you on the mountain or Sylvia when you got back. Congrats on your LONG-AWAITED successful beta-test, looking forward to the next adventure!
@@RADThird1 Tailwheels usually have no retract function. The wheel sticks about half way down thru the ski and the ski is allowed to pivot on the axle and has a "suspension" bungee in the from to keep it from digging in, like on the maingear skis..
@@JonasMarcinko Very good. I saw an episode several years ago of what I think was called Ice Pilots ?? and one of their tailwheel skis had a 2" or 3" deep keel running down the center length of the ski for better turning authority. Seemed like a great idea to me at that time. Take care. Love your videos.
Congratulations Jonas on initial success with the skis. Like any product, it will evolve and your genius will find a way to prevent the rear part of the ski from burning out on asphalt. Necessity is the mother of invention as they say!
Honestly, That was so close to IMC, the only thing that saved him was that he was in the mountains and he didn't observe any miniums. Dude, that could have easily killed you. You pushed conditions out of impatience while flying VFR into imminent IMC. No joke that is the classic way pilots die.
Have to agree, when you climbed back in I thought you were going to park it for a while till it cleared... you lived though and could obviously see more than us lol
gus bisbal Not risky at all. Perhaps out of regs, but that’s impossible to tell from a video from one angle. He had 5+ miles of visibility ahead on takeoff, more than double the requirement. If you don’t think that’s okay, don’t apply for any flying jobs in Alaska.
INSANE ENGINEERING Jonas. You did a great job on the rigging and the retract mechanism- love your amazing creativity. I could really feel your emotion in this one- very inspirational. JOB WELL DONE SIR!!!

Anybody else wondering what the over/under is on the number of months before we'll be reading the FAA accident report on this guy?
@@sre331l Yes, I did - and I hope it's taken in the way I intended, to point out the number of "new" dials being turned all at once. In the engineering world, this is a high risk way to proceed, and I'm sure we'd all love to see this dynamic young couple stay healthy for a long, long time!
Thank for sharing ! So happy to see this first landing ! I was almost as exited as you were ! Thanks for all your videos, it’s inspiring ! Signed a Futur French pilot.
Fun video to watch. Scary is right. Glad you didn't push it to far and listened to Silvija. She's like the angel of common sense on your shoulder, lol.
Good job Jonas. I think the suggestions that I seen a couple guys make sounds good. I have worked with the UHMW before. That could be used along with the small wheels as a backup. I wanted to ask how are you moving the ski back and forth. I only got a short glimpse from your video but it looked like you were using linear activators is that correct?
Randomly clicked on one of your video's a few weeks ago and it only took watching a couple more to figure out that your from my home town, what a small world. I graduated from Snake River High, so funny to see you over at Jensen's Grove, Too Coooool. I'm not a pilot but flew with Dee Novas when we were kids and have wanted to be one every since. Also skipped school one day and rented the Cherokee with a buddy there at your airport. Love your videos man keep it up, it helps those of us that aren't pilots keep the dream alive.
I suggest a skeg in the midline made out of a strip of the high density plastic, and in case you haven't discovered this, after you land place a small lift (2 X 4 segmant) under each ski so it doesn't freeze to the ground. If you get frost under your skiis so you are unable to taxi, put a garbage bag around each ski. Bag will rip off on takeoff but you will be able to slide!
Nice! Proud of you man!! Mike Patey would be impressed! I sure am. Oh and one more thing...when that sweet girl says she loves you on the phone...say it back! Shes a keeper!
Just a quick comment. I'm a bush pilot in AK and we land on grass with our skis allot in the spring. No snow in the valley. Snow in the mountain. Straight skis , though. Grass runway. Works real well if grass still has some dew on it. Anyway be safe and please no more real flat light and IMC conditions. Most of the planes and friends lost on skis have had one or both of those things involved.
That was crazy! Those skis look so good. I was super nervous just watching it, I didn’t know what to expect because of the title. I was super stoked when it all worked out and I could see your genuine excitement. Great job all around, awesome video.
You could feel your excitement through the vid . I want to keep going would have been a bad decision possibly , you did what you needed for the first time .
Nice skies. Showed to my 93yr old dad. First he said funny looking cub ;). Then told his story of soloing a J3 cub on skies when 16 in the winter of 1943 outside of Chicago Hope you found some more snow and clearer sky

Very happy for you @ 11:50 Congrats. Glad your hard graft payed off for you.
Has Silvia done any more flying? Working towards a license? Need an update video.
She has been studying a small amount. We need to get her back flying soon.
Great job! That snow landing went so much better than the last time you landed on a snow covered mountain and ended up leaving the plane.
Sylvia added a very thick dramatic layer, very enjoyable, thanks for sharing!
It's a while since I have seen someone that happy... Well done

Happy for you, you looked so happy yourself, glad you got to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Man, some day, that is my dream. I do bush flying for my job, but that looks like so much fun!! 😍
hahaha, fancy seeing you in the comments :) I liked the video, but heck, gotta admit that this was a bit sketchy... fun to watch nonetheless.
How much damage is there on the trailing edge when you taxi and take off?
Not much actually. I thought it was going to be pretty bad.
Your creativity is inspirational and your movies brilliant! thanks both!
Nice work Jonas!!! I really enjoyed the video and excitement. Congrats on such an accomplishment.

Good work on those skis but why no ski on the tailwheel?
I guess it would be difficult to design one that would retract for paved opps like the main gear ones do.
