I think you are going to be stressing a type c gearbox with the power you are going for. I'd consult with Airtrikes or Mohawk Aero for which gearbox to use. Something like an SPG3 or 4. They are mostly used on 4- stroke automotive engine conversions, but they might be able to make an adapter for your engine.
I was thinking the same thing however after speaking to some people much smarter than me who think it should be ok and after discovering this gearbox has been on many 130hp applications and i could find only 1 instance of it failing via a spun bearing. Yes this is 165 hp but thats max output at 8200 rpm so it will rarely actually see all 165hp. That being said the gearbox is one of the things that ive been working on some new designs because i would like to have a gearbox rated for higher hp than it will ever see so there is a safety margin. Apex is a good engine however on these avids i decided it was a bit to big and heavy so after much consideration i went with a rotax 800etec. 165hp for under 100lbs . As far as i know this is a worlds first so cant yet say if this was the better option or not yet.
Yes slats are on the list of things to do but i think the profile of this wing is a major problem . Id love to slow this wing as much as i can because i like how short they are but i wonder if id be better off just starting with whole new wings . We shall see what the numbers are soon and go from there. Thanks for tuning in.

I have so many questions. My dad has an avid mkiv and we’ve been talking about doing a Yamaha apex motor. What motor did you go with?
