    The 503 is one of the most reliable, bullet proof, 2 strokes flying out there. Keep your static rpm below 6400 and you'll never hurt it as long as the mixture is right and oil mix is 50:1. 1200 max on EGT, 350 max CHT. Don't forget to change the gearbox oil if you haven't already. 75w-140 is what you need for that.

    • @jamesordwayultralightpilot

      Mine is like 58 static. I never tied it to the building and really tested. I'm at 64-66 max on climbout tho so I guess I'm good. I still worry tho. Mostly because of where I'm flying. So many trees

    The airbike looks really cool! Good to see you didn't give up and got it running. I have an electric bike. 500w. I live in Florida, not many hills. I think if someone lives in a hilly area, they've got to get at least 750w motor. Also the hills eat up the battery, so you're not going to get the miles they say.
    Be careful flying low.......sometimes those power lines can sneak up on you.......

    Jonas, I have been watching you all the way from here in New Zealand, I'm enjoying your content.
    I have a challenge for you, what is the maximum distance you are flying in your airbike? Remove the two stroke (I have nothing against two strokes, I am an ex motocross rider) and make your airbike electric, all problems solved if you are just joy riding and not going cross country.
    Nice to see your daughter growing up in a fun environment. Keep up the great work.

      I know a guy who has an electric trike. Very lightweight 1 seat delta wing. He gets a little over an hour and half at 60% throttle cruise. With 2 batteries. So he needs to buy 2 more batteries which are like 700 for the pair I think. Then he'll have more fuel at the hangar for when it dies. Not a cheap upgrade for sure. Little to no maintenance and with your configuration you could get more flight time for sure. You could probably handle 4 batteries too without noticing the weight. And you already have the prop.

    A few tips for your consideration . Carburator jets will tarnish over time and this may result in less than optimal fuel flow causing a lean condition and higher cht . Ethanol fuel causes corrosion within the carburetor that will quickly foul jets . Old stale fuel can cause poor running conditions . I enjoyed this video greatly !

  • @michaelhurst506

    The airbike flying has much in common with motorcycle riding! And for a couple of issues, there might be some readily available solutions. For example, I have used SEMA helmet BT communicators which put a speaker in each ear pocket, a boom mike at the front (inside the full face chin guard or drop down face shield on a 3/4 helmet). Connection is via Blue Tooth to my iPhone --people I talk to cannot even tell when I'm riding down the interstate at 75 mph--any audio device that is BT enabled will work). I have a frame mounted windshield and fairing on my motorcycle and every one that I have owned for last 50 years. There are many varieties of windshield mounted and upper/lower frame mounted wind deflectors that might work for your situation. Any how, looks like terrific fun to me!! Thanks for sharing.

    • @JonasMarcinko
      @JonasMarcinko  4 місяці тому +2

      That’s very true! Never thought of using a motorcycle headset. The only issue would be connecting to my radio for air traffic. Ill look into the deflectors also. Might work!

    • @jamesordwayultralightpilot
      @jamesordwayultralightpilot 4 місяці тому +1

      @JonasMarcinko MMATT from CA was advertising the helmet cb adapter that accepts plugfones for your ears and has a boom mic. I can't remember the name of it but I bought one for 275 and it works. But for the same price I bought a cheap paramotor 3/4 Hemet that has build in ear cups with good noise cancelation and a sturdy boom mic. I flew with it once 2 weeks ago and it was perfect. Only costs 250 on Amazon and it came to my house in a little over a week from China. Good quality like a motorcycle helmet with a nice faceshield and a ring for the goggle strap if you want them.

    It's a joy to see it flying again. Last time I saw it in person, Chuck Roberts (the guy who built it with his son John) took off from Homedale and nearly flew it into a tree before yanking back on the stick and figuratively leaping over it. Plane is definitely nimble. Not sure on this, but I think the airfoil is one he and John came up with in the mid to late 80's.

      @jasonfisher5811 4 місяці тому

      @@JonasMarcinko Yeah, he's my Grandpa. Last i knew of the plane before you got it waas that John had sold it roughly 10 years ago. By the looks of it thst person never got around to getting it back in flying shape before you ended up with it. I saw the airfoil plans back in 87 when the plane was being finished by the two of them. But, I don't know if those wings are from those plans or not. John may still actually have the blueprints for them.

    My somewhat educated guess, but I think you’re fighting a losing battle trying to free air cool that Rotax. I made that work (with difficulty) on a Kolb Twinstar but that’s with the engine up there in the clean air above the wing. You probably need to go with the stock fan cooling setup. On second thought, IDK, is that an option on a tractor?
    I’ll be hitting you up for some advice on an E prop. I’m looking for something smoother and quieter for my Rans S-17. I sure do envy your ailerons on that Airbike. The S-17 is glacial in roll by comparison.

    If you've got it close to temp and the jets are correct. (Check Bing chart for your size rotax) then I'd just put more pitch in the prop to bring your RPMs down and your Temps will come down as well. You'll also get a little better climb. Lower RPMs seems to be better for Rotax air cooled engines. At least that's what I've heard. That 6800rpm full throttle max is just putting extra heat and wear on the bearings. Also 45-1 on the mix seems to be cooler than the recommended 50-1. These little 2 strokes are fun but kinda scary. I'm probably gonna by a new engine when my 503 decides she's done.

    I wish we had that freedom of flying in Europe...
    Here everything is stricktly regulated. No flying below 500ft (over countryside) or 1000ft (over towns and cities), except for training of emergency landings in low flying areas.
    And then just put your plane down on any nice spot, even land on roads... must be such a feeling of freedom.
    And flying without a proper, recent VFR chart? Can cost you a fine if you get inspected after a flight.
    And "You don't need a license" for the AirBike??? Wow... 😮

      I wish you had the same also! that's a bummer. We be over in Lithuania this summer and I am planning on flying some aircraft over there.

      FAA rules don't apply to Jonas. ;-) Section 14 CFR 91.119 states that aircraft, including ultralights & airbikes should stay above 500 ft above the ground and 1,000 ft above the ground in congested area. Exception for landing and takeoff or doing a flyby to check a off-sight landing area. Yes, this was remote flying and the rules are rarely enforced except if you are Trent Palmer... There are lots of very good reasons why you should fly above 500 especially if your engine is not reliable as Jonas has said. With a dead engine & altitude you have options. Below 500 ft flying the canal and your engine has an issue, you have 1 maybe 2 options and praying might be one of them.

    @ 13:52 do hawks or eagles ever bother you guys in the US?
    Here in Australia we have to occasionally watch out for Wedge Tailed Eagles during mating season because they can get cranky & territorial.
    They usually target the wing so its not too bad in a paraglider (i guess they think the pilot is just something the brightly coloured "bird" is holding in their claws) but flying hang gliders it's a little......well, terrifying tbh.....becuse you're facing it head first & you're also very close to the wing.....especially when they actually rake the wing with their claws!

    Jonas, have you ever given thought to replacing your powerplant with a performance mod Predator 670? 4-stroke is way more reliable & Predators are made to run for hours @high RPM. I think the engine swap process will make for great content.

      I think the weight would be the issue. ill need to look into it. but i like the idea!

      @@JonasMarcinko Well, there's the Predator 212cc performance mod (one cylinder). That engine kicks ass on the race cart circuits. Maybe mess with a different prop, like a 4-blade e-prop?
