BTW: Some of these boxes have a bug where if you try to record a program that starts at 11:30PM and ends at 1:30AM if doesn't work right. If you have one like that you can set it to record two sections to get it all. Most stations do ads on the hour.

I’m planning on designing my own home theater system and I had the idea of installing the EMATIC converter box to my home theater AV rack if you didn’t know what AV stands for it is Audio Video rack it’s one of my video sources of my home theater build
I don’t know if I’d recommend Core Innovations models, since it cost twice the amount (almost) of an Ematic models, which you pay wayyy less. My unit died after weeks of use, and I switched to an Ematic. Just saying this because the ones from Walmart are $40+. I mean, it works, but my model died after several weeks of use. Ematic ones are what I recommend, and plus they are nearly identical in OS and software/encoders.
But an Ematic, I’ve had mine for almost a year now, and no issues!
EDIT: Yes, some models are clone of others, it’s just that Ematics are cheaper and for me, seem to work much better. I bet I could use the same remote of my Core Innovations on my Ematic
In general, digital converter boxes are known for having flimsy power supplies at times. I have a Homeworx that is a popular seller on Amazon. I’ve had 2 power supplies croak on it. Chances are all these are made in a couple of factories with a different brand sticker on the front.

@@NorthcoasterHobby Exactly! I've seen very little models that actually have a different OS, rather than slapping a label on it. Also, I did't get why they said that removing the warranty sticker (which was attatched to the plastic wrap) and now I can't retrun it!
Now for something good, and rather cool about the set top box: I found that a USB hub works well, however I was only able to get two storage devices to show up. But what's neat is that the order you put the flash drive// HDD, the first one you put in will be the first device it records to. Thought I might note that. Also, I would like to know a few things about these OTA tuners that are a bit hard to understand.
In the instruction manual, it notes about updating the OS with a media device, yet I can't find any articles or files to use for the software system update.
Also, the manual mentions "Radio Channels" Is this referring to RF channels, or analog stuff? I'd be happy to hear if you've figured these two issues I'm having.
@@AshtonsMediaArchive Radio channels may be audio-only TV channels which are available in some areas. Radio stations are broadcast on a small part of the FM band right beside TV channel 6. But these converter boxes won’t pick up radio stations.
As far as the software update, I’ve never done one and haven’t searched for one. It is probably a matter of downloading a file and installing it on the converter box. But I wouldn’t chance updating the box and possibly bricking it!
If you hit the center navigation OK button while on a program, it will bring up a program listing of all the other channels that have been scanned in and those that do have program listings will show up. You can then scroll up and down to that channel and hit OK to tune into that channel. Much easer than hitting CH up down or entering the channel number manually, plus you can see what the other channels have on currently. That is if those channels are broadcasting the EPG guide data; not all stations do this unfortunately and it's not mandated, at least in the U.S. Most all full power major network stations do broadcast an EPG, the low power and religious tend to not do this. Your explanations of features on this digital set top box were pretty comprehensive, nice job.

Great video! I have had two of these devices and love them...way better quality than a VCR! However there is one issue that has me perplexed: while watching programs that I recorded with my original unit from Ematic, if I stopped playback in the middle of the program and then resumed watching it later I had the option to either start at the beginning of the show or pick up where I had left off. Then all of a sudden one day it stopped giving me that option and would only start at the beginning. A year later I purchased a new unit (from Core Innovations) expecting to have this function restored, but it is nowhere to be found. I have never done any kind of update and am wondering if I may have accidentally changed some setting that disabled this feature. Any ideas? Thanks!!

Australia uses a different broadcast TV standard called DVB-T. You’ll need a tuner that is made for that standard. This box receives ATSC signals.

If signal good put unit on a splitter and flip between inputs.
If you have a Converter Box with "Loop output" or To "TV connector" you can do the exact the same thing like in the analog days. Use your Converter Box as a PVR, and from your TV you can watch any channel you want. This rule is for OTA user, for cable and satellite is complicated. But if your TV has only analog tuner then you don't have other options and must watch the channel you record.
In Europe there are STBs that have two tuners mostly are VU Plus receivers. A receiver with two tuners wil allow to record two channels or record one channel and watch other channels in the same time. The disadvantage is that you have to connect two cables exactly like connecting two TVs. But this is mostly for cable and satellite receivers.
This is a basic converter box/dvr. I have the Iview brand converter box/dvr(model 3500STBii) and it is almost the same. There are almost identical similarities. You're pretty much stuck watching the channel you record.

I only looked at about ten or so other youtube videos before I came to yours. I am a novice at all things electronic and I am an old guy. Therefore, I found that some folks talked far too fast. Others mumbled a lot. Some camera operators let the camera get out of focus for over a minute.
I could have used some short breaks between your more important points, but you went slow enough that I was able to pause and review until I figured it out. (And I made notes so I wouldn't forget everything before I stood up from this computer.)

@@NorthcoasterHobby I bought this item today and when I first search for channels, I got around a dozen but, after going back to settings I found a procedure to turn on or off antenna power, when I turned it on and did a research, I found 55.
I have the Core Innovations CTCB105 OTA Channel Converter and LOVE IT!!!! This box gives me the BEST PICTURE!!!! I USED to use a Digital Window Antenna...but that sis NOT do it for me! I had to have a full roof/attic antenna installed to get the BEST reception! I have TWO HDTVs and I have the Core on one...and an Ematic on the other. For me, the Ematic box has NEVER given me the reception as good as the Core Innovations CTCB105 Channel Box! I love Core's CTCB105 so much, I ordered TWO of these earlier this evening! One to replace the Ematic...another to have, just in case, one goes out on me!!!! This Core has worked for me, for over TWO YEARS!!!! The CORE INNOVATIONS CTCB105 is PERFECT!!!! 12 Reasons why OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail. Just say NO to (DRM). Tell your USA Government about the Hostile Takeover of (OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV) issues listed below.
DRM (Digital Rights Management) Encrypted TV Station's signals. Why?
Some 3.0 tuners at this time require you stay on the internet to decode DRM 3.0 TV Stations. Why?
3.0 Currently no 4K and you only get the Simulcasted main channel and no sub channels.
Channel Crawling = super slow channel changing (DRM 5 + seconds slow).
No sound because of Dolby AC4 audio codec does not have a legal open source license to decode legally on many devices.
Some 3.0 tuners have Out of sync audio to video problems.
Private Home Networked OTA antenna tuner boxes like (Tablo TV box) can not get official certified approval for DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV. Why?
You may need non OTA home pay internet for updates and to unlock DRM encrypted ATSC 3.0 tv channels.
Possible DRM restrictions on DRM ATSC 3.0 recordings and no viewing anywhere on any device with no sound.
Emergency alert messages can not be received if DRM is blocking them.
OTA DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail because the FCC is not going to turn off ATSC 1.0 TV stations for many years if not enough people buy 3.0 TVs and 3.0 boxes.
No one has solve the problem of no government money for free DRM 3.0 TV tuner boxes because 1.0 TV turners and recorders will not work after that TV Station switches to 3.0 TV broadcasts.
(Range and signal error correction) OR (more sub channels and near 4k picture) trade off problem.
FCC is not forcing any 1.0 TV Stations to move over to 3.0 TV. So some TV stations will be on 1.0 and others will be on DRM 3.0.
The FCC is only allowing OTA Simulcasts of the ATSC 1.0 main channel at this time on DRM ATSC 3.0 NEXTGEN-TV.
DRM ATSC 3.0 is a not finished product and is a work in progress mix of unproven ideas that has never gotten full FCC approval at this time.
Software updates for 3.0 tuner boxes may be needed for changes made to the unfinished and future added new official ATSC 3.0 standards modules.
Patent License problems. LG no longer sells TVs with ATSC 3.0 tuners.
Some 3.0 TV tuners companies may go out of business or stop updates leaving you with no DRM or software updates.
OTA ATSC 3.0 is better but is not perfect and still can be affected by weak tv signals: (distance, weather, planes, trees, buildings, trucks, poor antenna, etc).
FCC rules that 5 percent of old ATSC 1.0 coverage area does not need to be covered anymore = (SHORTER RANGE).
Viewing zone outside of your 15 minute city or town could be blocked.
Your TV viewing habits could be tracked by your serial number or IP address.
ATSC 3.0 is updatable until it is not updatable without new hardware tuners (ATSC 4.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0......).
Some of these 3.0 TV issues may be fixed over time.
This is only some of the mess with DRM ATSC 3.0 TV.
This is my opinion why DRM ATSC 3.0 TV will fail.
IMO. Stay on OTA 1.0 TV until DRM is removed from OTA ATSC 3.0 by law.
It is the people versus the hostile takeover by private DRM 3.0 TV stations for control over the USA public airwaves.

The fact that a USB Hub works is kinda puzzling and funky, that being that you can only have up to two media devices at the same time (well for me that is) Of course USB 3.0 works well, and the only annoying thing with the PVR function is the fact that it splits .mts files not into separate .mts files, but .mts1 and .mts2 . Which is done bc the format of the USB drive is FAT 32 (Which can't hold past 4 GiBs) and it's aa pain to convert those. Luckily, I use both VLC and Handbrake to convert these files.
I'm very confused. I connected my cable box to the RF In jack and I can't get any signal to show up, its just stuck on the two menus
This box is meant for use with a TV antenna, not a cable box. Connect your TV antenna to the RF in jack and run a channel scan.

I have zjbox and can’t set time to anything but military time and am unable to att a single channel, ever time you do auto channel search you lose all your set outs cording future shoes, o you have any pointers on these issues . Thanks
Some boxes don’t have the channel add feature, and the clock is only in 24-hour time. When you run a channel scan, generally recording features are reset because the channel guide is essentially erased and re-entered.

Where I am, the stations I care about do the EPG thing just fine.
It is useful to mention that on many such boxes if you poke the "info" button twice, it brings up a signal meter. If you have a means to aim the antenna like fiddling with the length and angle of the rabbit ears, you can use this to optimize.
BTW: These same boxes work in the US but down here you get different ads on them.

Hi. Can I use a 3.0 usb flash drive with this box?
The manual says 2.0 or 3.0, but I find a USB 2.0 works well. I've never had any issues recording with a 2.0 flash drive.
Electrically, there is absolutely nothing preventing you from using a USB 3.0 mass storage device, but you are extremely unlikely to see any speed benefit in doing so since the USB port on these multimedia devices is almost universally USB 2.0.
My question is: If I set up a schedule to record a show at a specific period-time-frame, meanwhile, can I watch the TV on different channels?
In other words, once I set up a schedule for recording a show, am I able to watch other channels simultaneously?
Not with this box, because it only has one tuner. You have to watch what you are recording.
No law says you can't have two boxes. Make a little right angle thing out of cardboard from a cereal box to cover the light sensor of the one you are not talking to. Get creative about how to switch the TV's feed. The 3 RCA jacks vs the COAX can work on most TVs.

If your TV has the 3 colored RCA jacks, I find it better to use them. You get a very slightly better picture and better sound.
Also many such boxes will play music if you put music on a USB stick and plug it in. This can be nice for some music while you do something.
Will this work as a dvr or similar to how presumably dvd recorders when I finally make myself hook I 9ne or both of them up to hopefully if either one or prefferably both work then will first use to digitize and hopefully for many years if not decades to come- a vhs vcr tape of 21 to 23 year old home movie/diy vacation movie or really just a noncopyprotected type tape but also for inevitably to reduce wear if not also compliment a dvd recorder- with a more or less decades l9ng life type of dvr device
So my father bought this converter box 4 days ago, and the box went out for days later he didn’t have the receipt nor the box. I called customer service that the box came from the converter box came from and they told me that they cannot do anything about it so either keep your receipt in the box or just don’t buy.

Do any of the ota receivers support HDMI-CEC, the automatic switch thing? I have cable tv for my folks and would like to setup some in-house channels with uhf/catv rf modulators I have. The cable tv box supports the CEC and switches to it no problem, but it is not as easy to switch to the internal tuner of the TV. I'd have to find a simple universal remote with macro functions. I'm hoping one of the converter boxes supports CEC so I can use that instead, unless there are other solutions out there.
Does this work with the "square" type indoor antennas?
Yes, it will work with any indoor or outdoor TV antennas. However, the reception results vary depending on the TV antenna you are using. Depending on their design, some antennas perform better in a given reception area than others.
I can't get to the Installation menu which you show at 2:54. I'm using a HDMI cable, double checked, it is connected correctly, and I have my OTA antenna connected (it works, I've been using it with just the TV for years) I have channel 3 and 4 enabled on the TV. I've tried with 3 and then 4, nada. I'm at my wits end. Your video and the manual both assume the blue setup menu will show up, but there's something I must be getting wrong.
I had to double check this. The installation menu you see there is for first time use. The only way that menu will appear again is if all channels are erased. The channel scan installation menu can be found by going through the main menu. Follow the steps in this video and you should be back on track:

That is for audio-only TV channels, only available in certain markets.

My only real complaint is that you cannot edit the channel list once you have done a scan. also cannot find any kind of support for updates. does it handle nextgen ?
I’ve never updated the software- have never had any problems. ATSC 1.0 only.
sometimes these digital tv tuners tend to skip some parts of the show that's recording. in my case, that happens. so i use an av or hdmi capture card to record.
Hello again! I commented on another video about getting my mini TV with an antenna input working thanks to an adapter you recommended. My next thing i would like to do is connect a DVD player to that old TV, will one of the converter boxes work? So i would be using Component (Y/W/R) cable then turn it into Coax output. To connect a DVD player to an older TV, you'll need an RF modulator. It converts the AV signal to an RF signal which can be plugged into the coaxial input on the TV. Here are a couple of videos I made about RF modulators:

I have the iview 3500STBii, and the features are almost identical to this one. The problem i hate is when i scan my local channels in, but one of my channels, CBS, never gets scanned in. Wishing i could ADD a channel, like in the days of having a VCR, in order to get CBS. This unit won't let me do that.

The plastic film you suggest removing (which makes total sense because it covers the vents) has a sticker on it that says “DO NOT REMOVE QCPassed”! It’s like they WANT it to overheat and stop working!🤦♀️🤦♀️

When it works it is great. I got one at Walmart lasted about a week. Took it back and got another one, they took the broke one and gave me a new one. It lasted about a week. I recorded about 2 hrs with it and it died. Never got to watch what it recorded. The remote take some getting use to.

Not necessarily. You can connect the box to a TV (old or new) with the RCA plugs (red, white, yellow) or the RF out (with coaxial TV cable).

There are no settings like that on these boxes. The program is recorded in the resolution it is broadcast in.
Shrinking them after the fact with software on your PC is an option. The hard drive can be read by your PC. Lots of software can be had for free. I suggest AVIDEMUX as being within the likely ability of most and with it you can do "useful" stuff to the video while you convert.
What size usb will i need
It varies widely. A 128 GB drive might record approximately 40 hours of 720p video, or approximately 20 hours of 1080p video. So a bigger storage drive is probably better. 128 GB or 256 GB probably at least.
Will record the sound if the tv is muted with the tv remote?

Has anyone else had the problem of not being able to exit the menu?? I did a channel rescan and now the menu will NOT ho away! I press the menu button as the manual says but it just toggles between the main menu and the Installation Guide. I’ve unplugged it, factory reset it, and nothing works!😡😡

No, only over-the-air programs that are received with a TV antenna.
Thanks so much, I can tell I'm used to convenience but the cable keeps going up. Now x Cable company has a new trick trying to give u a mobile phone with the same land no. saying it will lower your bill but not saying u now have a separate mobile bill

It ook the plastic off and it sill crapped out in 2 weeks!

Let’s just get to the point there’s no point in buying this I took the plastic off put the box up in four days the box went out. I couldn’t go get another box because I threw the receipt away and I don’t have the box either so I called the customer service number for the box and they told me since I don’t have the box since I don’t have a receipt and they check the status from the side to see that the box was out and they said they couldn’t do anything about it so now I don’t spend almost $50 on a box and I can’t even get my money back because even the company that the bucks come from the converter box come from cannot be replaced not even by them so either you keep your receipt and keep your box so you can return it back to the store. Keep it I mean if it’s like much too much just don’t throw it away. Keep the box in a receipt because if you don’t when you wanna return it, you’re not gonna get your money back even from the company come from Nor would they re place another box

That thing is a piece of crap. Don't lay it side ways. I live in L.A and has a hard time getting local channels compared to a previous one I bought. Dosnt even tell time on the face and can't delete channels you don't want

@@Chris-ig8co The reason for that is there is only one tuner in this box. If you’re recording a program, that’s the only one you can watch while it is recording.
