Im really glad you did this video I think this is something everyone should have. I am currently using a HD HomeRun going though my Plex server. Everything is pretty much exactly the same except that my storage of DVR is on the server and I can watch the TV stream from anywhere in the world.

It is a brilliant device to take old tech and make it much more convenient.
I don’t think the Tablo is supposed to go in the attic though. It will overheat.

Correction. This DVR streams the raw MPEG-2 video to your devices at the original format with no compression. However, the bitrate is too high for it to be streamed reliably outside the home. So that means you can only connect to your Tablo if you are on the same wi-fi network. You can't even schedule recordings away from home. An inconvenience if you are on vacation, and forgot to set a recording of the Olympic Games. You would never want to forget to set a recording for the Olympics if you are a huge fan!

Great video. does that mean you can throw this thing into a suitcase and just watch it on some TV in a hotel? I don't mean record from the hotel I mean your stuff is already recorded on the machine
@@gorelowjeff5054 The TV app requires Internet access to run. The Tablo only streams over a local network to devices with the app.
Theoretically you could get it to work, but it'd involve bringing your own router & streaming stick
Maybe but it might be difficult as you would need to changed the Wifi on the device and have the Hotel TV access it on the same Wifi network which is usually a bit difficult to do.

This is only available in the US.
My only concern is that you had to call customer service to get it up and running. What was the problem? Was it a one off?
I'm pretty sure it was a one off thing but I just wanted to mention in case others come across it and how simple it is to get resolved.

@SVW1976 I think so as it adds extra ad supported channels, but I haven't spent too much time with the Homerun.
What happens if there are channels that cannot be received by my antenna, are those channels still not available?
If your current antenna is not seeing local channels then this might not pick them up either. There is a channel signal boost option in the app or you may need to reposition or upgrade to a higher range antenna. There are also some ad supported channels that are added directly on the device without needing an antenna signal.
Does it work if Internet goes out
no because the WiFi is what streams it and it does not work without it

Working on it.
Not sure of the current situation as it is changing but this device only shows unencrypted channels. In some markets major channels cannot be watched, CBS, NBC, etc. Once atsc 3.0 fully rolls out all channels could be encrypted making recording impossible and you will have to have an Internet connection to decode free, OTA signals and each box is limited to and assigned to one television. Buyer beware.
Nah. I`ll just hack it. I'm getting it now on a 2009 tv, no problem. Soon as they try one thing I will just bust it open. I don't pay for squat and won't. Not even internet. Just use a wifi cracker.

Do they provide channel details for Canada?
All I could find is that the older Tablo devices were available in Canada, but not this model. So it sounds like the older devices did have that.
@@TechWithBrett, I looked it up and those TV & Movie streaming options are only licensed for the US so it’s only sold in the US. The older models (legacy) support both US and Canada tv guide data.
I wonder if the Silicon Dust HDHomerun devices offer something similar.

This product is total JUNK. I have it and when it works it's fine, but that's not very often. First the TV app cannot find the Tablo device and you have to power reset power to all devices and on and on. Then you are watching TV and it losses the channel and goes back to the main menu. Sometimes the TV app crashes altogether exits and goes back to the TV main menu. Beyond annoying to have. Totally unreliable. What it does without any issue is record programs for playback later and thats what i use it for now. My TV has Max, Netflix, Hulu, Spectrum, Prime etc, all work without issue.
07/09/24 Butterfingers Review from Tablo site. I named my Tablo "Butterfingers" because it is constantly drops local signals. This is the second unit I have had and it is just as undependable as the first. I have replaced my modem and all the cables as well as the antenna and it still sucks. I wish I could have a refund but it's too late.
07/09/24 Disappointed Review from Tablo site. I have had several earlier versions of Tablo. Then I bought the latest version 4th generation. I was expecting at least the same enhancements as the older version but to my disappointment this version gives less. It doesn’t have remote access while away and have experienced lots of moments when I am watching a program then all of a sudden it just freezes up or drops the program. Also too can’t see what the episode of a show is about. If I knew was going to get less with this latest version I wouldn’t have wasted my money.
Thats what i'd do; record& save,playback.i seldom watchva lot of tv since i read a lot now.
