Excellent video, you reminded me of my childhood when VCR was very popular. I used to record my favorite movies and TV series when I was a teenager. I used the VCR until 2009 when I replaced it with a Philips DVD Recorder H.D.D. model. In 2018 I connected my VCR to my satellite receiver and recorded music videos, form STARS TV channel on HotBird 13 East. My VCR is a Philips model, it still works today, In Europe we mostly use SCART connection since receiver, VCRs, DVD recorders and TV sets have SCART connection.
@@NorthcoasterHobby I was born in 1993 but I used VCR untill 2009, the first model was an AKAI VCR but it didn't had a tuner you had to connect to the TV using the RCA IN and OUT connection and record with your TV on on the channel that you wanted to record. We had it from 1990 untill 2003 when it could no longer play tapes. We mostly used for watching rented movies. In 2003 my uncle bought the Philips VCR and I could record and use the Timer function to record late night movies As a 10 years old I was amazed back then that I could record a movie and watch other channel. Well analog is simple, in the digital age a receiver must have two tuners one to record your favorite TV show and the second to record or watch the second show. Early European VCRs had RF output on UHF channels 36 - 37, the later models especially the ones with cable tuner allowed you to choose the RF output between channels 21 - 69 so you don't have interference.

At 2:34, for Mono TV sets and VCRs there is an RCA Y adaptor, two RCA female and one RCA male to convert the stereo audio into mono audio. I used to do this when I had CRT TVs. The RCA Y adaptor was useful mostly with DVD Players and gaming consoles (Playstation, Wii, XBOX).
@@NorthcoasterHobby If you use it for gaming it is mandatory back when I had PS2 and PS3 on my CRT TV In some cases I couldn't hear some dialogues especially on "Grand Theft Auto" games, and some PlayStation Exclusive games. And it's because they were broadcasting on the right channel (red connector). When I searched on Google I found out that mono TVs need an RCA Y adapter. When I replayed the levels I could hear all dialogues, same thing with movies. The best part is that European CRT TVs use SCART connection and even if it's a mono TV you don't have problems with stereo audio, they automatically convert the audio from Stereo to Mono. RCA to SCART adapter work in both ways and broadcast stereo sound.

There are some people who use more than one connection to record video from the TV. It takes two converter boxes two antennas or a splitter using the same antenna to hook up to both and if the same VCR has two RCA inputs you can use both with separate boxes. Complicated but true.
Is there a way you can use a vcr to record a crt tv? Also, my vcr box does not have red white and yellow cables out front like yours so is this still doable on an hdtv?
CRT televisions and VCRs both have analog tuners. They can no longer receive any TV broadcasts. Connecting a digital converter box as shown in the video allows you to record TV broadcasts. They can be played back on a CRT, however. A VCR without RCA plugs can be connected to a television with the RF out coaxial cable connection to the TV’s RF or Antenna in connection. It will modulate to channel 3 or 4 on the TV. But on an HDTV you’ll have to run a channel scan to watch the VCR content on channel 3 or 4.
@@NorthcoasterHobby So an update: I followed the steps as described on the video and I think I was able to connect the red white and yellow cables correctly even though it is not equipped like your vcr box. The inputs and outputs are all located on the back side of the box. My only issue is connecting to the AV input on the hdtv.
I have a question about the second output. The tv that I am trying to hook to a VCR/DVD combo does not have the red/yellow/white connections. It has red/white and then red/green/blue connections. How would I make that second connection? Could I use the HDMI port? I have not purchased the OTA converter box yet but will. My parents have recently cut the cord and have went with an antenna for local channels. My mom would like to record some programming from the PBS channels. Thank you in advance for your help! :)
