Great video Mike! Tried drilling my first pen blank yesterday with a small hand screw clamp. It worked but I like this a lot better. Just saved me $70 on a commercial jig. Thanks!
I like the design. I might build one of them. I have been known to forget to set the proper depth of the drill bit resulting in an unwanted hole in the base. One thing I might add is a slot in the base for a replaceable piece at the point where the drill bit passes through the blank. In case the drill is set too deep the piece in the slot can be moved to keep a solid surface under the blank. Keeping a solid surface under the blank will help prevent blowout.
Thanks for the pen vice plans. I made one and I can drill my blanks more accuratley than anything I have used before. I batch make pens for the military 100 at a time. Another turner, Eddie Castelin sold me on the project on his you tube video (Freedom Pens).
Nice looks great ...and some of the ones you can get are expensive...this one is a lot better....cause you built it....like it fits in the waste block ....
Great video. I have it in my faves now. What is the lever mechanism called. I have been trying to find one but found the clamp type. Keep up the great projects. I am getting all the bits to start turning my own pens. :)
Maybe I'm not understanding the need for this jig. I love jigs, so I'm always looking for ways to use them, but wouldn't it be more accurate to use a drill chuck in the lathe and just clamp the pen blank in the chuck? I mean, who is without a drill on the lathe anyways if you do any kind of turning, you'll need the ability to use drills and forstner bits. And yes you'll need a chuck of some type, I have a barracuda and would find it much more impossible to turn without it. Thumbs up anyways....thanks, Jake
+James Jacobsen for speed this is a better option. A lot of people make multiple blanks at a time to batch them out. One or two pens sure the lathe is a great option.
thanks for watching. Sometime I do VO but I feel most of the time people should be able to get whats going on. As far as the music, me personally I would rather hear music then loud tools on camera.
True your stock all has to be the same size but let’s face it if you’re drilling that many panels were you need a jig they’re all gonna be pretty much the same size
Great functionality Mike. I like that it fits in the waste board.
Thanks Buddy
Hey! I made this, and it works great! Thanks!
Good stuff, thanks for watching
Nice job on the jig Mike. Works very well and has a lot of other uses. Thank you for sharing. Take care...
+WoodCrafts 67 Terry Thomas WoodCrafts Thanks Terry
Great design, might have to "borrow" this one!!!
Go for it
Great jig for pen blanks. I think I will copy the dowel centering holder. Thanks for sharing.
Go for it
Love the way this locks into the drill press table 👍🏻 good job Mike!
Thank you Trevor

Thanks Alan
Very nice. Thank you. But better still I loved the waist board insert you have. Think I will be adding that to my drill press.
Glad it was helpful!
Pretty cool and useful project. I think it can be used for many more things!
I agree I been thinking of some other things to use the waste block slot for
That came out really nice, Mike! Definitely a smart idea! When I get around to making a lathe I'll definitely be making one.
Thank you
I like the way you incorporated it into your drill press table.
Works great Dave, thanks
good stuff mike. nice upgrade. good idea with the springs.seems to work well
It does work well. Thanks Joe
Mike Fulton might have to make one for my 8" press i use just for that purpose. Thanks for the idea.
And NICE WATCH!!♤☆♤
Thanks
Go for it. This would be perfect for a stand alone unit
thanks so much for the FREE plans! you're very giving
+don wires your welcome

Good point

+Lee Peterson sweet, that freedom pen deal that Eddie does is a cool thing.
Your drill press is very nice, I love the waste board set up.. almost a quick change tool system
.
Clever engineering right there. Neat!
Never been accused of being clever before thanks
Very nice, very ingenious, thank you for sharing, have a good day.
.
@@mfwoodshop thank you for responding, keep up the goo work, and have a safe, and a nice day,

Thanks for the build, Mike.
+Jerry Bell thanks Jerry

I was I the same boat. I was looking at buying one. Thanks for watching
That's pretty cool Mike.
Thanks Chem

Thank you Robert
Great Idea. Would work alot better than a metal one I welded up a few years ago. Thanks for the video.
I was thinks of doing that but this was just to easy
similar to mine but I like your improvements on the two dowels and the waste board idea.
Thanks Brian. I got your sticker and mine in the mail box to you.
+Mike Fulton Cool beans but you know what I looked on my board and I already have one of your new ones. Guess I will put it on a tool!
Great idea Mike!
Thanks Mike
Thanks for the good idea, I like it very much. I will also build such a part.
Thank you
I don't have a lathe but it's still a cool project. Thanks Mike
+Paul Meyette Thanks Paul
Neat jig, nice watch!
Thank you, the watch was from the wife
Great jig, Mike!
Thanks Braxton
Nice! great Idea!
Thank you
+Mike Fulton Now I need to find a good way to do it with a hand drill.
Oh good luck with that. I had to use a hand drill a few weeks ago that some hard work.
+Mike Fulton But it is so enjoyable! now hand resewing 12" oak that is a lot of work!

Straight Line Toggle Clamp, WoodRiver #143936 (WoodCraft Store) I also have plans for this on my website. Free
Tanks Mike. I will build one when I get the clamp.
Very elegant.
Thank you
I like it... but you need space for a sacrifice board to prevent blow out.
I agree
@@mfwoodshop Have you worked on it?
nice job, ready for production work
Thank you

I need to make one , need dim.
+Bill Gardner haha make it it's easy. May wait a few weeks maybe updating it
+Mike Fulton sounds good to me I will wait for it
Great idea. I will certainly give it a go. I would’ve preferred a voice over on what you were doing instead of the funky music though.
thanks for watching. Sometime I do VO but I feel most of the time people should be able to get whats going on. As far as the music, me personally I would rather hear music then loud tools on camera.
damn mike I was just thinking about making one.
Sorry, Mike LOL
+Mike Fulton nothing to be sorry just great minds think alike.....mine will be a tad bit different. great idea with the springs.
Thanks Mike looking forward to seeing yours
Definitely not self centering with the one jaw glued down unless all your stock is EXACTLY the same size...
True your stock all has to be the same size but let’s face it if you’re drilling that many panels were you need a jig they’re all gonna be pretty much the same size
