Thanks mate. My brain hurts after watching all the swapping and changing and gluing. Bloomin' well done though Bob. Take care. Dave Winch (Buddha) Beachmere, Queensland Australia
Careful Bob- Steve Good is liable to go out and buy a lathe. Hey. the veneer (4:40) I don't think that is cherry. Mahogany maybe? I like the Cap't Eddie sorta finger point you have been using at the end. Good job! Hope to see you Sat. night at Twin Peaks.
I've recently gotten excited about pen turning, and actually ordered a lathe and some other tools yesterday. Lemme just say, I am even MORR excited about turning pens, now that I've seen your videos! You have really gotten my creative juices flowing about how to make unique stock to turn into beautiful pens! Thanks for that, and please keep those videos coming.
Great job. I liked the clamping tips and the way you used the tape. I don't use my scroll saw for pen blanks but will have a go at a variant of this next weekend.
BIG thank you for this. As a You Tube video maker myself I know exactly what effort goes into making these video's and I appreciate the time taken to bring us this. I am not a pen turner but I the technique you so clearly demonstrate here will come in very handy in a future projects I have planned. Inspiring video's such as yours are the reason why my TV never gets switched on any more!
nice work. I had some cut offs from my acrylics I always save I glued them together all different colors, turned a fun line pen and my wife loves it. she went to the super market all the employees now want one. these types are fun to do and are so unique people go crazy. I've only been turning less than a year. thanks for your channel it helps out alot. 😊😉
Bob, you continue to amaze me! I'm just getting back into pen making and now I have yet another of your techniques to try. Thanks for the inspiration to get in the shop again!
Hi bob, I don't usually leave comments on videos but I have one piece of advice.you can choose weather or not to take it 😃. When I started making pens very regularly I decided to take the plunge and buy a blank drilling chuck and a mandrel saver, is the best use of money I've found so far other than my carbide tools and my lathe of course. Keep up the good work! -Oliver
+Oliver Andrews Hello Oliver, I have those items but choose not to use them. When drilling on the lathe, the holes are sloppier. Plus with many of the blanks I make, their not square and don't lend themselves very well the the chuck application. Your idea is a good one it just doesn't work for me. Thank you very much for your comment I do appreciate it. Regards, Bob
RJBWoodTurner at first when I started issuing the church I couldn't get any of the holes to drill straight, but then I tried drilling with a 1/4" split point drill bit then finishing up with the brad point 7mm and it is much easier to get rid of a good chunk of the material before Sui the brad point drillbit. Hope this can clear up what I was trying to say -oliver
+Oliver Andrews Thank you for this follow up note Oliver, I appreciate the additional information. I will give this method a try and see how it works for me. I hope my previous reply wasn't too preachy, my wife say sometimes I don't answer with enough tact. It's tough to have a discussion with just words, you lose all the inflection and body language that tells the rest of the story. Regards, Bob
RJBWoodTurner I don't want to push my ideas on you either! Everyone has their own way of getting to the end of the maze.im only 16 i make mistakes but I try my best not to. For a future video you should buy some polyester resin and some mica powder and cast some of your own acrylic blanks.i lived in the states for 6.5 years and took for granted the selection of resins and wood, now I've moved back to the uk it's pretty hart to find resin blanks for anything under £7
good lighting makes a big difference. that is one of the coolest looking blanks! stinks about the blow out. hence" trial and error " im sure youll perfect it next go. have a good one bob!!🍻💥
As I was watching you make these blanks I was think that this was a lot of fooling around . But now that I see it finished . It was definitely worth it . Really cool looking blank Bob . Great job .
Man I love these how to videos. I've never made a pen but I'm getting some really great ideas for knife handle scales. One day I'll have to try turning a pen. I have too many hobbies and not enough time
Wow, Bob, you have taken pen blank making to a whole new level! Awesome design. Too bad about the mishap but looks like you got that covered and congrats on the new lights.
Nice pen. I haven't gotten around to trying out a modified slim line yet. You have so much time into that pen it's going to be hard to get your money back from it. Segmented are still a good seller for me though. BTW your "cherry" veneer is mahogany. Still waiting for you to make a trip up to Indy...
+Mike Bratcher Thank you Mike, I have called that veneer cherry before and was told what it is, I keep forgetting, old age I guess, LOL. I am coming to Indy, here's the video announcement with all the info. ua-cam.com/video/MY2tVYEolmw/v-deo.html Hope to see you at the meet up. Regards, Bob
RJBWoodTurner that twin peaks is about 3 miles from our shop. We were planning on coming to the woodworking event. Not sure what day. I will definitely consider the meet up you propose though.
If that's the only area that has glue on it, you can try knocking out the tube with a 1/4" knockout from the pen dis-assembly kit. I've had some poorly glued tubes come out that way.
Bob the pen turned out beautifully! Can you explain what a modified pen is and the various modifications you can do to a pen/pen kit? Maybe make all of that a video topic? I watched one of your videos last night which I think was a modified pen as you pulled the tube out after it was finished. What is the purpose or benefit of a modified pen? Thanks Bob. Ron
There really is no benefit, it’s just fun to mix it up and not make the same ole thing all the time. I have a play list of all the modified pens I’ve made. When you’re on one of my videos, click my name and it will take you to my home page. There is a playlist selection on there. Regards, Bob
Hi there, love this pen so much I may actually attempt something like this... Do you have a picture of a completely finished pen/pencil in this design?
Very interesting, quite a bit of prep time. I don't have all the tools you have so some of the stuff you do I have to be creative - I have yet to make the segmented blanks yet, because I don't have a band saw it has proved more challenging. I've made quite a few of the modified slim lines (I think they are my favorite pen to make and I've done quite a few glue-ups with veneer as well another option on the modified slim lines is to use the stylus conversion kit for the 7mm pens makes a nice light stylus w/pen.
+Dave Roush Thank you Dave, I know you can get creative and find alternative ways to make these blanks. Let me know what you come up with because I get questions all the time about alternatives and I can share your findings. Regards, Bob
Hey, amazing. I never would have thought of that in a million years. BTW, I made a mistake once, I thought I was wrong and I wasn't. At least you have a fix for it. Keep on Turnin.
+William Donnelly Thank you, I didn't plane them, I ran them through the band saw just to clean them up a bit. I'll show the drilling the next time I use one. I have an idea for another modified pen, based on a different kit, and plan to use one of these blanks. Regards, Bob
Bob, have you tried to soak your veneers? May be beneficial in assembly and the water will just evaporate and the glue should hold tight and strong as equal as if done dry. I would like to try this out in the spring time (unheated shop up here), I will try just straight cuts vice your sine wave, to see if the pieces match up better. It is a wonderful abstract look. Thanks for taking your time making your video for us to view! Michael
+Michael David Hiltner I've never tried soaking them, never even thought about that. I may have to give it a try. Thank you for the suggestion. Regards, Bob
I think you could still make the blank work. You really only need some way to cut it. Scroll saw, band saw, coping saw, anything will work. Regards, Bob
Bob was wondering what you call this blank? My first thought was crazy blanks, kinda like dizzy bowl or drunken cutting board pattern. Very cool, the veneer ties it all together. Thanks for sharing.
+John Fisher That's funny John, The directory on the computer and the original video file was called Crazy Blank. I wasn't really sure how to title it. Regards, Bob
Bob, I have made a couple of 7mm click pencils, but have not found a supplier with a 7mm click pen! Where do you get that kit? love this idea. Thank you or another great idea.
+Jerry Dionisio Well Jerry, I may have spoken to soon, I have been searching all morning and can not find one. That blank may become a click pencil and I'll turn the mate onto an 8mm Slimline Pro from Pen. State. I'll keep everyone updated on this. Regards, Bob
Oh! please show how to do an 8mm slimline pro. I would love to see it, as I have had rotten luck with that pen several times. Thanks in advance Bob. Jerry
Hi Bob, did you build the loft in the background? Did you happen to do a video about it? Looking at doing something similar in our garage. Enjoyed this video...thanks for sharing! Steve
I attempted this once, ran into an insurmountable problem and have not gone back to it. The problem the two contrasting colored blanks I started with two radical different densities thus I was breaking blades left and right trying to saw through them. After 3 blades on the 2nd cut I gave up. When I get done playing with your other fantastic ideas I'll come back to this one. Dave.
+Dave Roush I never thought about that Dave, wood densities could play a big role in the success of this blank. This was one of my favorites and I plan to make more, they just look so cool. Regards, Bob
This is like the chaos pattern cutting boards I've seen done I was going to ask if you had ever seen them and if you thought that idea would make a good pen blank I guess now I know
RJBWoodTurner after I posted that comment I was thanking it might be easier if instead of gluing up each individual blank maybe it would be easier to make it like a big cutting board and then cut it into blanks on the table saw. Just an idea
hi Bob nice blanks as always cool process! I always liked your videos you do great work. I'm not positive but I think you're cherry veneer is actually quarter-sawn sapele mahogany.
+James Lewis Hello James, Thank you and I think your right on the Sapele. I believe I made that mistake on a past video where I also called it cherry. LOL. Regards, Bob
Wow that's a lot of work for a pen but the result is cool.. When I try to cut 2 taped blanks together I find that once cut and swapped around they seem to not have a very close for.. have you any tips regarding mimicking the cut accurately?
+Heath Cope I use a #5 blade because it's stiffer, the video is at double speed, I cut really slow so as not to flex the blade. I use the veneers because they compress into the kerf and hide it really well. Regards, Bob
When I made my modified pen, it was very difficult to remove the mechanism. So I very lightly filed the ridges on the transmission until it stayed in, but was relatively easy to grip the slippery nib and pull it out. While testing the removability, don't insert all the way. You really don't have to worry about it staying together, because during use, the pen is being pressed together. I do like your new blank construction :>) Cheers
+Steve Overton I've also found a small spacer the width of the center band helps. Otherwise you're putting another 1/4" of transmission in the upper tube. Regards, Bob
Those blanks are awesome! I've done some segmented blanks, but nothing that was quite so cool looking at the end. How much do you think those pens would sell for? New lights are probably the most underrated shop upgrade, especially for a youtuber, good call.
it's beautiful. I'm going to have to try this. I just got some leopard wood, some red heart and some other contrasting woods. I will just need to get some nice veneer. I will say though I had the volume all the way up and could barely hear you. do you use a mic or any audio recording device?
Just a thought! IF you were able to start with HDPE tubes, then CA glue wouldn't stick to them. However I strongly suspect that they'll need their centres drilled out. From I've seen locally, they may be available in the right outside diameter.
I recently made a batch of them on the bandsaw. If you do several at a time it you can really knock the total time investment down. Plus, now I sell the blanks when I make these, not finished pens. Regards, Bob
*Dons sunglasses* WHAT SORRY I CAN'T LIP READ! Nice. Use a dowel or chopped up pencils to clamp in the middle of concaved parts at the end, then you aren't putting pressure on one (or both) of the points and can apply more pressure as a whole. You could also use some strips of thick leather or compressible foam (old mouse mats / neoprene) on the convexed side to account for the bow. 12:30 as reference to what I'm talking about.
No no, no faults with the video at all, I was having a lil joke about the brightness of your new lighting (it's great, nice job). The second part was advice about clamping concaves and convexes with regard to small parts and small clamps etc. Apologies, I'm tired.
+Neffers No harm, no foul, I understand, and I always appreciate constructive criticism as well as new ideas to improve my process. Thank you very much. Regards, Bob
Awesome job Bob. For a while there, I thought this was going to look awful but once it all glued up and then turned down it came out great. Was this the first attempt or did you already know it would look good? Btw, loving the new lights. 😉 Cheers, Ben
+TeamWild Hello Ben, This was the first attempt at testing out an idea I had. I love this blank but believe the Slimline is the wrong platform, it needs a thicker pen. Regards, Bob
Wow.... It turned out amazing. Great looking pen. All the light - OUTSTANDING!!!
+Bob Stembridge Thank you, I can't believe how I worked in the shop before the lights. It's like an operating room now.

I think you could still make the blank work. You really only need some way to cut it. Scroll saw, band saw, coping saw, anything will work.
Regards,
Bob
Those turned out really awesome. I want to try some of my own segmenting, maybe less complicated for my first time haha
+Kaged Creations Thank you,
These weren't all that complicated, just really time consuming because of the glue dry time.

The directory on the computer and the original video file was called Crazy Blank. I wasn't really sure how to title it.

Bob
Bob, I have made a couple of 7mm click pencils, but have not found a supplier with a 7mm click pen! Where do you get that kit? love this idea. Thank you or another great idea.
+Jerry Dionisio Well Jerry,
I may have spoken to soon, I have been searching all morning and can not find one. That blank may become a click pencil and I'll turn the mate onto an 8mm Slimline Pro from Pen. State. I'll keep everyone updated on this.
Regards,
Bob
Oh! please show how to do an 8mm slimline pro. I would love to see it, as I have had rotten luck with that pen several times. Thanks in advance Bob. Jerry
or at least how to assemble it. :-) jerry
+Jerry Dionisio Will do Jerry,
I think there would be quite a few interested people. I'll make it soon and do a video.
Bob
Hi Bob, did you build the loft in the background? Did you happen to do a video about it? Looking at doing something similar in our garage. Enjoyed this video...thanks for sharing! Steve
+Steve and Brenda Ball Hello Steve,
I did, here's the video link:

I attempted this once, ran into an insurmountable problem and have not gone back to it. The problem the two contrasting colored blanks I started with two radical different densities thus I was breaking blades left and right trying to saw through them. After 3 blades on the 2nd cut I gave up. When I get done playing with your other fantastic ideas I'll come back to this one. Dave.
+Dave Roush I never thought about that Dave, wood densities could play a big role in the success of this blank. This was one of my favorites and I plan to make more, they just look so cool.
Regards,
Bob
This is like the chaos pattern cutting boards I've seen done I was going to ask if you had ever seen them and if you thought that idea would make a good pen blank I guess now I know
+Barry Fields This was a blast to make. Glue ups were interesting but the blanks hold together well and look amazing.
Regards,
Bob
RJBWoodTurner after I posted that comment I was thanking it might be easier if instead of gluing up each individual blank maybe it would be easier to make it like a big cutting board and then cut it into blanks on the table saw. Just an idea
+Barry Fields That's an interesting idea. I don't see why it wouldn't work. It would probably be easier too.
Regards,
Bob
hi Bob nice blanks as always cool process! I always liked your videos you do great work. I'm not positive but I think you're cherry veneer is actually quarter-sawn sapele mahogany.
+James Lewis Hello James,
Thank you and I think your right on the Sapele. I believe I made that mistake on a past video where I also called it cherry. LOL.
Regards,
Bob
Wow that's a lot of work for a pen but the result is cool.. When I try to cut 2 taped blanks together I find that once cut and swapped around they seem to not have a very close for.. have you any tips regarding mimicking the cut accurately?
+Heath Cope I use a #5 blade because it's stiffer, the video is at double speed, I cut really slow so as not to flex the blade. I use the veneers because they compress into the kerf and hide it really well.
Regards,
Bob
thumbs up thanks for sharing.
+THE CREATOR Thank you.
Bob
This will be one 4 me 2 try :>) Brilliant idea , Bob :>)
+Neil Raymond Thank you Neil.
Regards,
Bob
Nice job Bob
Blanks look great
What size scrollsaw blade did you use?
+Chris Seymour I used a #5 DeWalt blade.
Regards,
Bob
Thank you Bob -- truly enjoy your videos
+Chris Seymour Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
Those blanks are awesome!
I've done some segmented blanks, but nothing that was quite so cool looking at the end.
How much do you think those pens would sell for?
New lights are probably the most underrated shop upgrade, especially for a youtuber, good call.
+Andrew Helgeland Thank you Andrew,
A Slimline with this blank $30.00. The price goes up with the kit choice.
Regards,
Bob
Great blank, I really like this one
+Mike Fulton Thank you Mike,
I'm glad to see your feeling better.
Regards,
Bob
it's beautiful. I'm going to have to try this. I just got some leopard wood, some red heart and some other contrasting woods. I will just need to get some nice veneer. I will say though I had the volume all the way up and could barely hear you. do you use a mic or any audio recording device?
+John Biggs Hello John,
Now that I have lighting covered, I really need to move my attention to either a mic or voiceover.
Regards,
Bob
Nice! Reminds me of the Animal Kingdom Lodge at Disney World!
+Todd Taylor LOL,
Thank you.
Regards,
Bob
Just a thought! IF you were able to start with HDPE tubes, then CA glue wouldn't stick to them. However I strongly suspect that they'll need their centres drilled out. From I've seen locally, they may be available in the right outside diameter.
+DMCwoodworx That my friend is an interesting idea. My thinking cap is on.
Regards,
Bob
brilliant idea
RJBWoodTurner Bob there is a company that does sell HDPE and I believe UHMW rods here in the U.S. but I can’t remember the name of them.
Very nice. Unfortunately at my age I would not live long enough to finish it. :>)
LOL.
Looks great, just not sure how cost effective that much time creating a pen blank is if you intend to sell them.
I recently made a batch of them on the bandsaw. If you do several at a time it you can really knock the total time investment down. Plus, now I sell the blanks when I make these, not finished pens.
Regards,
Bob
*Dons sunglasses* WHAT SORRY I CAN'T LIP READ! Nice.
Use a dowel or chopped up pencils to clamp in the middle of concaved parts at the end, then you aren't putting pressure on one (or both) of the points and can apply more pressure as a whole. You could also use some strips of thick leather or compressible foam (old mouse mats / neoprene) on the convexed side to account for the bow. 12:30 as reference to what I'm talking about.
+Neffers I don't understand, the video has sound when I play it. Is there an issue?
Bob
+Neffers Thank you for the info.
Regards,
Bob
No no, no faults with the video at all, I was having a lil joke about the brightness of your new lighting (it's great, nice job).
The second part was advice about clamping concaves and convexes with regard to small parts and small clamps etc.
Apologies, I'm tired.
+Neffers No harm, no foul,
I understand, and I always appreciate constructive criticism as well as new ideas to improve my process. Thank you very much.
Regards,
Bob
Amazing
+kyle thuotte Thank you Kyle.
Regards,
Bob
Bob, if you sprinkle a little salt on the glue the parts won't move when clamping & everything will line up perfectly.
+Fierceflyer55 I've heard that before but I've never tried it. Maybe it's time.
Regards,
Bob
Fierceflyer55 question... I always wondered, will that deteriorate the pen eventually, especially if it gets on the metal?
I use a Zebra Z grip click pen to make turned pens. Total cost for my turned click pen is less than$3. Have you tried this method?
I have not.
Regards,
Bob
good job
+Yobany Rodriguez Thank you,
Regards,
Bob
Love this! Nice work!
+Erik Anderson Thank you Erik.
Regards,
Bob
love it
+Marcy Cooper Thank you Marcy,
Regards,
Bob
Awesome job Bob. For a while there, I thought this was going to look awful but once it all glued up and then turned down it came out great. Was this the first attempt or did you already know it would look good?
Btw, loving the new lights. 😉
Cheers,
Ben
+TeamWild Hello Ben,
This was the first attempt at testing out an idea I had. I love this blank but believe the Slimline is the wrong platform, it needs a thicker pen.
Regards,
Bob
a lot of work but it looks great.well done
+Barry Parks Thank you Barry.

Bob
