Great idea for the jig Russ. I just turned my first pen for the challenge too and It was really fun and addicting. Looking forward to see what you come up with for your pen.
+Black Widow Woodworks Thanks muchas gracias... It actually was fun once I started...I have to admit I was a little nervous wondering how bad I was going to scew this up...LOL I can see it been addicting also...it's not that hard...
Very good video, Russ. I built a similar jig. One comment/observation... Is the location of the drill press bit relative to the pen blank supports designed around a blank that is 3/4" square? The blanks that I use vary in size, especially if I cut them myself from a log or other piece of wood. So, I always mark the top end of the blank for the hole centre, and then adjust the location of the jig on the drill press table so that the drill starts at my marked location. Thanks for sharing your ideas! Walter
The supports are designed around a blank that is 3/4" square but do to the fact that it is just clamped down you can move it around to adjust to the center of each blank as long as you have two side relatively square.
If you set the depth of the drill press to just go through the pen blank...it will leave a small shallow hole in the base but it doesn't effect anything...I only drill 3/4" square blanks in it.
Great Video. I was watching Steve Good Atlanta video and followed his recommendation to watch. I am subscribed and set my alert for you. I'll be watching you. What time on Saturdays?

The black square that you are using for clamping does it have a specific name? I have never seen that before.
+Joseph Poindexter That's an assembly square available from Rockler. Mainly used for cabinet construction, but as you see, is not limited to just that
+Joseph Poindexter Thanks for watching...it is a Rockler Clamp-It® Assembly Square like John said...www.rockler.com/clamp-it-assembly-square

Great idea but can I ask a daft question, what happens when the drill bit reaches the bottom of the blankdoes it not damage the base?

Could you not use your 90 degree plastic guide that you used to make the jig as a jig? :) nice work btw
It appears that you could also use this to center drill a round dowel also of varying diameters..
You most certainly could... thanks for watching...
