  • The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the pedestrian crash prevention systems of 16 midsize cars in the lead-up to Halloween, a holiday that consistently ranks among the deadliest days for pedestrians in the United States.
Four luxury and two nonluxury midsize cars earn a superior rating for their pedestrian crash prevention systems, while four nonluxury cars earn only a basic rating or no credit. Another six cars earn an advanced rating.
Annual pedestrian fatalities have increased 53 percent since reaching a low point in 2009. More than 6,000 pedestrians were killed in 2018. During 2013-17, the two deadliest days of the year for pedestrians on average were Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 (or after midnight on Halloween).
Technology could be part of the solution. Many manufacturers are upgrading the automatic emergency braking systems they have agreed to install by 2022 to recognize pedestrians, in addition to other vehicles. These systems scan the path ahead and automatically apply the brakes to avoid hitting people in the roadway.
About two-thirds of the vehicles that IIHS rates included pedestrian detection in 2019, in many cases as standard equipment. Among the vehicles evaluated in this current round of testing, pedestrian crash prevention is standard on all six luxury cars and six out of 10 nonluxury cars.
When they work correctly, such systems can help avert tragedy. A 2017 Highway Loss Data Institute analysis, for instance, found that Subaru's EyeSight system with pedestrian detection cut the rate of likely pedestrian-related insurance claims by 35 percent, compared with the same vehicles without the system.
Most pedestrian crash prevention systems use one or two forward-facing cameras mounted near the rearview mirror and/or radar sensors in the front grille to scan the roadway for pedestrians poised to enter the vehicle's path. Algorithms determine if the detected objects are pedestrians. In some cases, they can recognize bicyclists or animals too. If the software calculates that a collision is imminent, it alerts the driver and applies the brakes faster than a human can react.
The performance of the systems varies widely, the latest IIHS ratings show. The Audi A4, BMW 3 series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Nissan Maxima, Subaru Outback and Volvo S60 have systems that earn superior ratings. They avoided collisions or slowed substantially in track tests.
At the other end of the spectrum, the Ford Fusion, Hyundai Sonata and Kia Optima earn no credit because they failed to slow significantly in multiple scenarios.
The C-Class, 3 series and Chevrolet Malibu each offer two different pedestrian crash prevention systems. On the C-Class, the optional system earns a superior rating, while the standard one earns a basic rating. On the 3 series, the standard system surprisingly earns a higher rating of superior, while the more costly optional system earns an advanced rating. Both of the Malibu's optional systems - a camera only and a camera plus radar - earn basic ratings.
    About the tests
IIHS launched its pedestrian ratings in February. In the first round of testing, four out of 11 small SUVs earned a superior rating, while another five earned an advanced rating.
IIHS tests performance in three scenarios: an adult pedestrian stepping into the street in the path of the oncoming vehicle with an unobstructed view, a child darting into the street from behind two parked cars, and an adult pedestrian near the side of the road in the travel lane, facing away from traffic. The two perpendicular tests are conducted at 12 and 25 miles per hour, and the test simulating a pedestrian walking in a parallel path to the vehicle is conducted at 25 and 37 mph.
In each of these tests, the system has 1 or 2 seconds to stop the car to avoid hitting the pedestrian dummy.
Each test is performed in full daylight on dry pavement. Systems might not perform as well during the nighttime hours that account for most pedestrian fatalities, though if paired with good-performing headlights, they should be able to detect pedestrians.

Was driving a country road, I saw a ball roll onto the street out of the corner of my eye behind two parked vehicles. A child runs out my car picked it up before I even started applying pressure onto the brakes (the parents of the child were mindful of what the child was doing the dad had already started darting off, but he wouldn't have made it in time). I can go to sleep a bit easier. I'm a cyclist as well, my bike tire punctured once when crossing wet railroad tracks, I lost control but avoided a fall, there was no car behind me or following me closely, I probably would have been hit by a vehicle, accidents happen, to all of us, even when we're not being stupid.

It's basically self driving car tech, it's currently in a stage where it works some of the time, but not all the time and not reliably enough. It's good enough for AEB systems though, some accidents prevented are better than nothing and they are already good enough to at least not create more safety problems than they fix. They will get better over time, it's a software problem to crack and significant incremental improvements in it happen all the time.

I can attest to the fact Hyundai's emergency braking system and associated sensors are garbage. On the top end Elantra trim, not once did it even beep. After my mom hit a parking obstruction with no audio warning of any sort, it caused front end damage. One Hyundai dealer claimed it was because the obstruction was not moving and another claimed the reason it did not deploy because there was no metal. They never tested the sensor and charged me $3500 to replace the metal cross member it was mounted on as the final insult. Remember this when considering a Hyundai/Kia because of the great value they claim it is. Thank you for uploading this video because it validates the corners Hyundai cut to lower costs.

I have a 2018 Ioniq, and for me the emergency braking system has never failed so far. Same goes for cross-traffic sensors etc.
The only thing I find somewhat annoying is the parking radar. If you park in reverse gear, the parking radar turns on automatically, but when you do the same with forward gears you need to enable the parking radar manually (of course, in this situation you rarely need the radar anyway).

Yes. Of course, in all these cases (well, not the Ford, Kia and Hyundai), the car is quite properly accepting the risk of getting rear-ended. Which might well through the car into the pedestrian while hurting the in the car and the people who hit it.
      Tough situation.
I once had to brake and swerve hard (my 16 year old legs hurt for a week) to avoid a person who just walked out into the street in front of me.
Missed them, demolished a wide stripe of the oncoming car. Nobody hurt - but, boy you'd have thought it to have been better to kill the inattentive pedestrian than to damage that dude's car.
I was going just under the speed limit and my parents insisted I drive their Cadillac as they expected I would be in accident after accident.
Nearly forty years later, that was the only one. I'm glad I was wearing my safety belts. That car braked way faster than I had expected.

      sure you do, but what if you dont!? Thats whole point of those system and makes a lot of sense, it is one of very few recent car features that are actually useful and improve safety ;

@TheNomNom Yeah, u are right. The thing is that a lotta people take the driving license, doing that allright for 1 time in their life. Then, it's another story.

@TheNomNom These systems were created for the times when the driver is not able to react quick enough (that does happen, especially with pedestrians sometimes walking onto the road without notice). Of course the drivers should be aware. But it's not always up to them. Which is precisely why these systems were put in place.
I'm not sure why you're so adamant about drivers being when that isn't the issue here.

@TheNomNom No one's "shitting on other cars". The tests just proved they don't work in ~30mph pedestrian collision accident avoidance situations. They're also not acting like 12 year old kids. It's a fair point that lots of people who are good drivers most of the time get distracted once in a while and it's these times that the accidents happen. The systems in question are designed to avoid these situations and marketed as such, but both the people making the video and the people watching it are saying that they don't work as one might be led to believe by the manufacturers. There's nothing wrong with them not working all the time or not existing at all and paying attention is definitely of utmost importance, but marketing them as working properly when they clearly don't is deceptive at best.
Further you make a good point, maybe some companies didn't design these systems for this use case, but why not just lead with that instead of starting a comment fight?

I love how they don't bother to show the inside footage of the cars who failed to brake in time or brake at all, now we can't see if in those cars, the emergency brake assist was engaged at all.
