  • When you're learning to solo, it's helpful to know scales. However, it's more helpful to know musical phrases as those will come out in your playing MUCH easier. In this video, we take a look at 2 phrases that use the minor pentatonic scale and add the flatted 5th note (the blue note). This turns the ordinary pentatonic into the blues scale and makes it super useful over blues, rock, country and more!
The BEST course on Diagonal Pentatonics I can recommend is by Daniel Seriff. It's amazing and very thorough!

These 2 phrases really opened up the fretboard for me and helped me play the flatted 5th in way more places! What about you?

Thanks! It's something I built from a couple of trusses to be mobile and fit into a car. If you want to see them in action, I used them at the beginning of this video. They work well! :) ua-cam.com/video/V6rnXzvpRpo/v-deo.html

It's not a hack - and hasn't skyrocketed your playing - trust me.

Ha ha! Well, for me personally, looking at these phrases inside the diagonal pentatonic did help me tremendously with blues phrasing. But I understand many others are well beyond me in the world of blues playing. Thanks for watching!

a bit clickbait to be fair... this is literally the same blues advice... nothing new here...
the best advice to skyrocket your blues solos is stop to play blues solos over blues...

I understand your point. However, in the thousands of private lessons I've given, students have a real blind spot to the flatted 5ths. The vast majority of them only learn them in the one standard blues scale and don't have any good ideas about where else they can add them. So in this video I'm trying to give really simple phrasing approaches outside of that standard box to use the flat 5 and push people to break out of that one standard box. Thanks so much for checking it out. :)
