Watching again. It is breathtaking every time. That huge dorsal fin coming right at you, getting bigger and bigger as it approaches. Even the sound of his exhalations is deeper and louder. What fortunate people you are to have witnessed these sacred beings close up. Watch with your eyes indeed...and your hearts.

What a special treat for those lucky, lucky people!! And what a big boy there!! I can't imagine why anyone would want to watch these magnificent creatures in concrete swimming pools doing stupid pet tricks when they can be seen in their natural environment doing the things they love! One of the things that make orcas so special is their delight and joy in the little things - a nice massage, playing together, etc. I know a lot of humans who could learn a thing or two from these amazing animals!!
I love it in minute 2:57 when the guy tells his buddy filming: "make sure you're watching with your eyes too." Their reactions are so typical in B.C; they knew how special that moment was.
Random fact: The whale with the tallest dorsal fin, his name is blackberry! They are beautiful animals and also very curious. As much as you were watching them they were watching you!
Commentary by "The Marine Detective"on FB: Absolutely remarkable footage of Northern Resident Orca with their culturally unique behaviour of rubbing themselves on beaches like this. I happen to be with whale researchers Janie Wray and Christie McMillan and we believe these whales are the A42 matriine. The big male is very distinct - he is A66 born in 1996. Footage is from somewhere in the Discovery Islands.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! for sharing this beauty!!! You are one of the luckiest people in the world! And thank you for being great audience of their performance without harming nor disturbing nature.
OMG!!!! I've never been so excited to watch footage of Orcas in my life and I watch a lot!! I can't believe how close to shore they were! I kept worrying they were going to beach themselves. Especially that huge male! You could literally reach out and rub him! This must've been an amazing experience for you guys. Thanks so much for sharing your footage with us, it's definitely one of the best I've ever seen 💕
Thank you for sharing. Instant proof that Seaworld should be shut down immediately! See those beautiful upright fins? Never buy a ticket to an abusement park.
I once saw a killer whale in a fjord in western Norway while waiting for the ferry. It came right up to us too! Unfortunately it was gone before I managed to grab my camera. I will never forget it though. One of the most beautiful creatures I've ever seen!
Look up keiko... i saw him while he was in captivity in oregon usa when i was 6... very exciting. Didnt see a show, but just seeing the animal was such an amazing moment... and knowing he got set free.... and he did make it to norway i saw on a documentary....
This is such a beautiful video of our local Orcas. I can't believe how lucky you guys were. Very, very special and unique. We have been offering Orca Tours in Johnstone Strait on Vancouver Island over 15 years and we have never seen something like this. Both thumps up!
You notice how strongly erect those dorsal fins are? That's the sign of a healthy whale living in its natural environment. Those fins flop limply downwards on all Orcas in captivity. Keep these beautiful animals out of amusement parks.
al, the erect dorsal fins means it is a male. females have a smaller and curved dorsal fin. also, the shape of the dorsal fins vary, depending on what type of orca it is
Love the comment to make sure you watch it with your eyes! So true and I hope you did do that but I am grateful you got this video to share. Gorgeous creatures!
An experience like this is so much more rewarding than paying to watch Orca's swim circles in a bath tub. I bet those people had a huge grin on their face all day. What an amazing sighting!
Man oh man.. you guys have to be THE LUCKIEST bunch of guys EVER!!! What i WOULDN'T do to have been in your shoes that day. Where abouts was this taken? Sooo close and I'm happy to see a little one in there :D
*happy tears* I'm so jealous and envy you guys for being able to be there and witnessing this in person. Thank you so much for sharing! I hope one day I can see that as well
wow they are so clever and playful. I would love to see Orca in the nature. This video really shows why this animals needs to be in the wild and not in captivity!
Fabulous video... especially the really BIG Orca with the huge dorsal fin! incredible event and how lucky you were there at that very moment, camera in hand!
From Dominique Plume (below): "This is incredible to watch! Northern orcas in British Columbia exhibit a rare behavior not seen anywhere else in the world. The whales like to rub themselves on the small smooth stones located at a beach in the Discovery Islands."
Not specifically sure where you are, but this is very similar to 'rubbing beach'. The popular rubbing beach usually has more orcas than one, though. (Larger area?) So awesome you got to witness this, though. Thanks for sharing!
your correct on them rubbing on the bottom, orcas love to do that for a massage and to remove dead skin, great video though, this really makes me wanna go to and watch these magnificent animals in their natural environment, that would be a dream come true :) I couldn't Care how long of a drive it would be from Ontario to either side of Canada it would be so worth it
It's interesting when both males are right at the shore, and they lift their tails out of the water. That way, they're rubbing the heir bellies on the pebbles.
There is only one male in the video which is the one closest and with the large distinctive dorsal fin. The other one is a female and could be the mother and matriarch of the whole pod teaching them how to do it.
Wow I bet that doesn't happen everyday? These guys were lucky they got to experience that up close. Wonder if the Orcas were showing off/having fun or were they fishing for something?
I’ve waited at this beach for hours and hours on end to see this!!!! And I fucking love the orcas!!! I’ve never seen it in person so thank you for sharing this it just made my day!!
The big bull killer whale with the towering dorsal fin is A66 "Surf"! Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased in 2023 after not having been seen during regular encounters with his family. Still such a gorgeous animal.
mmmm... Nothing quite like a good belly scratch. These whales are living the good life. The only problem with be being a whale would be they don't get to play video games. Probably some day when they evolve a little more they will have them though. (edit: Thank you for the gold kind stranger!)
UNREAL. This is why B.C is the best place on earth. I was just there last week and wished to have seen at least an orca ... : That is amazing! How did you spot this? Or did were the orcas already there?
It's most likely these orcas were scratching on the pebbles to rid themselves of parasites. These beautiful, huge mammals often have "riders." Much the same as ticks, and fleas like to attach themselves to your pets. Think of how annoying ticks are to a dog, and you get a pretty clear picture of why these orcas are rubbing themselves in the shallows. They may have also been in the mood for lunch. They hunt sea lions in the same manner.
omg what a gift these guys got to be so close and for such a long period of time, didnt even have to go on a whale watching cruise. so lucky, id go buy a lottery ticket
+Bluenose352 yes, that's what Orca use these rubbing areas for. What I would like to know is where is this?!? Those people were incredibly lucky to see that. Robson Bight is now protected for the orcas exclusive use; this area is obviously open to the general public. Where is it?
+Bluenose352 one would hope for that protection. It appears there is a sea wall built around this area so it might be a park of some sort. As to protection, considering the hoops people had to jump through to get the Robson Bight rubbing beach area preserved for orca I would not be surprised if this area is not protected. On the other hand, our attitudes toward orca have changed dramatically in the past few years so maybe it is protected. Would still like to know where this is!
+Bluenose352 so I finally clicked on the link under the video and read a very interesting article about these rubbing beaches. themarinedetective.com/2015/02/08/rub-me-right-beach-rubbing-behaviour-of-northern-resident-orca/
Heard this vid mentioned on cbc a couple weeks ago... I believe the guy said it was Cortez he was on... But this looks like it was filmed from the north side of Hernando... Anyone know for sure?

No, this is wrong. His name is Surf.

Surf is northern resident blackberry is southern resident
BlackBerry is J2

lol did you guys name him that or did he tell you himself?
Isn't that more fun than watching them in captivity
Tell that to the morons that take their fat stupid asses to pay to watch that.

Ahhh home sweet home. BC wild and free. The most beautiful place on earth :)
at some point it really looked like the big orca was teaching the little fellow how to get back using the tale :)
bshthrasher looked like a lesson ya. So intelligent.
Yep. He was teaching for sure. Ive seen footage where they force a young female to get her 1st meal by guiding her into the shore.
OMG!!!! I've never been so excited to watch footage of Orcas in my life and I watch a lot!!

Thank you for sharing. Instant proof that Seaworld should be shut down immediately! See those beautiful upright fins? Never buy a ticket to an abusement park.
+Ria Greiff Amen to this!
Go research what happened to Free Willy when he was freed. Not to mention go do your reseach on seaworld's rescue programs.
You are NOT educated!
emily mees Thank you!
emily mees he lived five years longer free he would of been dead within six months if left in Mexico so you do the research

Thank you for sharing.

What an incredible thing to get to witness! This kinda encounter is on my bucket list so beautiful to see them in their natural habitat.
To be a few feet away from Orca's would be an amazing experience.
You notice how strongly erect those dorsal fins are? That's the sign of a healthy whale living in its natural environment. Those fins flop limply downwards on all Orcas in captivity. Keep these beautiful animals out of amusement parks.

areeb1296, ok I see what he means, thanks
Yes
Yeah, but they don't flop over in the wild.
Some wild orcas do actually have curved dorsal fins.
That dorsal 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
1:52 is the best part! Love when that bull comes up to rub. Damn! What a Incredible sight!
Love the comment to make sure you watch it with your eyes! So true and I hope you did do that but I am grateful you got this video to share. Gorgeous creatures!

Thank goodness you had a camera!!! This is incredible. Thank you for sharing
Best video ever! This is my dream! Nothing would keep me from getting in the water with them. Such majestic magnificent creatures.
Agreed! I must do this at some point before I die.
wow they are so clever and playful. I would love to see Orca in the nature. This video really shows why this animals needs to be in the wild and not in captivity!
J'aime la vidéo, les orques sont dans leur milieu naturel. Et c'est tellement beau de les regarder! WOW!
holy goodness! that is awesome, you are all so fortunate to have seen this!!

Love this beautiful video! In the wild where they belong.
Wow. So beautiful. I love that one gent used a phrase I would have, "Holy moly". My other fave is "Holy Schmoly".
how wonderful that you were fortunate enough to be there for this beautiful natural experience :)
That one Orca is huge! so cool!
I wish I could see them too , I'm jealous but thank you so much for filming such a great moment
Wow I bet that doesn't happen everyday? These guys were lucky they got to experience that up close. Wonder if the Orcas were showing off/having fun or were they fishing for something?

Put some clothes on Barnaby. What do these whales have to do with video games? Stop taking drugs.
Wow this is such incredible footage
That is awesome! Thank you for sharing.
Best way to watch these gorgeous creatures
Orca are highly intelligent creatures and more than likely knew you were watching and decided to put on a show for you lol
UNREAL. This is why B.C is the best place on earth. I was just there last week and wished to have seen at least an orca ... : That is amazing! How did you spot this? Or did were the orcas already there?
Great performance❤. They know they are beautiful.
I saw a special where orca in this area have special areas where they scrub themselves along pebbles.
The baby at 3:49 made me smile ❤️❤️
Thanks for sharing this, what an awesome video!
this was an amazing video
I feel like it would be hard not to jump in with them! They're so amazing, I'd love to swim with them!

I feel like that big bull was saying "don't get too close to our baby now you humans" so amazing
I love that. I would be so happy there. I saw Orca today, but I was so far from the action.
Ah, what a site! Once in a lifetime!
omg what a gift these guys got to be so close and for such a long period of time, didnt even have to go on a whale watching cruise. so lucky, id go buy a lottery ticket

Great Video! Beautiful!
Wow, thanks for sharing!!!! That was amazing!! Wonder if they are getting rid of parasites or something??
That must have been pretty awesome to witness
Fantastic moment ! OMG ! but... why do they come so close to the shore ? excuse my ignorance.. but is there a specific reason .. wow !
Awesome! I love this town :)
Great job guys !!!
love it :)
Looks like Orca spa day. Exfoliating along the pebbles. :-)
Where exactly do you guys see this amazing thing :)?!
At 3:48 did he say, smoked a joint?
It's BC so I wouldn't be surprised haha
beautiful !!!
AMAZING,,THANKYOU!!
Great vid!
Could that be some sort of rubbing beach for the orca? Like Robson Bight? Very interesting behaviour. Thanks for filming and sharing
It is. They love the smooth pebbles. It is like a massage and a way to clean off the surface. Grooming in a way.
+Bluenose352 yes, that's what Orca use these rubbing areas for. What I would like to know is where is this?!? Those people were incredibly lucky to see that. Robson Bight is now protected for the orcas exclusive use; this area is obviously open to the general public. Where is it?
+Susan Anderegg That's a good question. There are quite a few of these rubbing beaches, as far as I know. You would think they would all be protected.
+Bluenose352 one would hope for that protection. It appears there is a sea wall built around this area so it might be a park of some sort. Beautiful
Heard this vid mentioned on cbc a couple weeks ago... I believe the guy said it was Cortez he was on... But this looks like it was filmed from the north side of Hernando...

What time of year is best?
Rubbing is kind of like the NRKWs version of curling--strictly Canadian.
AWESOME!!!
That Bull, with the tallest dorsal, must be Okisolo.
Good timing man :) Peace
I'm so jelly right now
Amazing!!!!
Wow amaxing! Tfs
