Orcas in Active Pass, Galiano Island BC - Canada (wow!)

  • Orcas in Active Pass off the shores of Galiano Island.
The spot is not far from InTheBluff and the Galiano Inn & Spa.
    www.inthebluff.ca and www.galianoinn.com
The video was recorded on Sunday, August 25, 2013 from the shore on Galiano Island. Although we saw the whales approach Active Pass from another location, we had no idea how many whales were in this group. We were very fortunate to see the superpod consisting of the J, K and L resident orca pods that feed on local fish. There could have been over 80 orca whales. They do not eat seals and, contrary to their other name "killer whales", they do not eat people.
We were all excited to see this many of them (as you can tell from the audio). I can't imagine anybody who would be able to watch them live in silence.
    Enjoy!

If I lived on the west coast, I'd be out there every day, you'd have to pry me away as I would super glue myself in the best view spot to view these gorgeous animals all day.

+SunnehShides I have a place two or three doors down from these people. I tell you, it's amazing to get to see these beautiful creature from such a great view! If I were you I would restrict that to everyday during the summer. That's the only time you see Orcas in Active Pass

Sedin Magic15 You are Sooooo Lucky!!!! I have been Obsessed with Orcas since I was a kid....and it wasn't until I was an Adult that I realised that they were actualy some in Canada! Lol! ( where I'm from) I always thought that they were like super far away from me.! And come to find out not only are they in Canada..But there are pods in Newfoundland ( which is the east coast of Canada and I'm from New Brunswick) and even More Unreal..is that they sometimes go to PEI...which I can see from the Beach where I spent my summers in my entire childhood!!! I mean I had always wished that we had whales and dolphins in those waters...but I also thought it was completely impossible!! Boy was I Ever wrong!! If only I had known "before" moving away right after highschool lol! I would have never left lol

Omg my heart has just melted, and is very envious, what a beautiful sight,so nice to see them in their natural habitat where all Orcas should be. You can see why they are part of the dolphin family by their playful nature. These for me are by far the most beautiful animal in the world.Thank you for sharing this

Thank you for your wonderful comment.
Yesterday there was another memorable moment caught on video in British Columbia when the transient orcas were hunting for dolphins. The video is not too graphic and offers a spectacular view of Mother Nature at work.

It's almost like they *Know* u guys are there waiting for them and just Looove giving u a "show" ! I see the same playful behaviour in each and every single video from this specific spot from Gary Cullen"s videos!! ( Assuming that u guys are with him as it looks like his backyard..where he brings people for this particular event ! ;)

I need to look on my map and find Galiano Island. The best place I know of for seeking orcas from land is the west side of San Juan Island WA.

BellinghamsterTrail this do this every time they pass through here...and they also swim really close to the shore...almost as if they *know* that Gary and his friends and family are there waiting for them! They constantly have this playful and relaxed manner coming through this passway ! It's quite spectacular to witness actualy!

    • @stephaniedaigle5930
      @stephaniedaigle5930 6 років тому

BellinghamsterTrail - the best place to seek Orcas would def be New Zealand!!! The waters are clear as glass and the pods there are used to swimming alongside people...and they also have a marine center there studying them who know them very well , so by far, out of all the pods and locations in the world, I would Highly suggest New Zealand of all places for the purpose of seeking Orcas ;)

I think the orcas like it, when they hear people yell out in joy. I’m sure they can tell it’s a happy sound. They seem to show off more after hearing it. How I would have loved to have seen this right where you were.. perfect spot.

We know That Different Pod's work together(related) While taking down large prey One remains active while one is in reserve resting until it's time To take over the attack again.. In this one Scenario a mother humpback Literally pulled its calf on to its mid section And rolled over Shielding its calf from the brutal ramming from 2 very large pods working in harmony with one other.. She absorbs over 4 hours of body blows until she floated herself and her calf into the shallower water around 15 feet.. Taking the angles away from the orcas which then called off the strike. It was very somber . Once the decision was made to call it off the pod in reserve was already heading back out to sea shows how fast they communicate..... I believe due to their Longer life expectancy the matriarch is in charge of most of the activities... I could be wrong but I think that's right....

I've been to Vancouver on a cruise to Alaska & thought it was GORGEOUS. What months do the Orcas travel through Active Pass? Will have to check out the travel bureau on Galiano Island to see it all!

Its nice to receive their energy of excitement in a mere indoor living room! Thanks for sharing this wonder of life with us simply mortals!I And many more thanks for the "oohhhs" and "wows"!

When you think about that's pretty much typical behavior for humans locked up in prison sometimes. Some get used too it others Crack. Truth is Whales need a lot of space to move around and a tank well getting bigger do not provide adequate space. A shame cause sea world does a lot to help marine wildlife, and Orca's in the wild are quite friendly and even playful to humans even helping some in fishing or rescue. Just um don't play a snowball fight with them..

  • @BellaBarossa

I thought they didn't look that big either, but it must simply be perspective, and the fact that such a large pod must be made up of many juveniles as well as adults. They are definitely orcas. Apart from other differences, those dorsal fins are unmistakably orca. Dall porpoise dorsal fins are broader, lower and usually bicolour.

The boats have to stay out of their path of travel. If whales approach you, you have to stop moving and let them pass. The whales will frequently choose to come right up to the stopped boats to get a look at the people on them, turning on their sides to get a better look as they swim by. They could easily choose not to do this if they were bothered and wanted to get away.

I am amazed that you can hold the camera. I would have been shaking in witnessing this special group pass by me. What an incredible sight! Also, hard to tell exactly but it seems to me that all of the boats are in contravention of the Marine Mammal "anti-harassment" Regulations which stipulates viewing from no closer 100 m and under 7kph!!! Stupid humans.

Probably just the perspective of the angle and camera. Take it from me (I live locally and saw this superpod this day) have been less than 15 feet (in a kayak) from one of the tall dorsal finned males you see in the video.....and they are BIG. 18 feet maybe 20. The babies as you say are dolphin sized. Very cool though. We saw them this day from the Ferry going to Vancouver.

This is SO BEAUTIFUL to witness, the only spoiler in the video (and sorry to the lady involved - sweetie) - but all the YA-HOO's really spoilt it - I know she was excited, but it kind of teaches the rest of us what not to do when someone is video taping such a special event. If you could take out the YA-HOO's it would be a classic around the world.

We were on Galiano desperately seeking Orcas. We did see a small pod (harassed to no end by the whale watchers) at some point on the same day ... and on the other side close to Mayne. Love the video. We may just need to go back to Galiano next summer and have a place right on the Active Pass!!! Amazing animals.

Ahhhh. The internet. A place where you could post the cure for cancer, and most of the comments would be about how stupid it was, or that the guy talking about it sounded like a muppet, or something.
Anyway, pay those morons no mind. Thanks for sharing. That had to have been amazing to see in person.

    No worries about the whales, they are oblivious & used to the boats. The boats are probably there because there was a decent amount of salmon. This would also be what drew the orcas too. I live nearby & the fishermen & whales have a nice healthy respect for each other & its all good (o;

Hello bcpolak ! Thanks for your observation. However, methinks you're quite a bit off-course ; I don't recall such quote being mine !
My sense of humour has always been keen and I laugh countless times daily ; often at myself !! Now, I'll laugh even more heartily !!

I agree with "stealth storm" . . . . the cacophony detracts from enjoying the video.
This was obviously made with themselves in mind.
HINDSIGHT : Maybe they should have shot a second one in total silence if they wished to post one on UA-cam for others to enjoy.

More proof that Whales especially killer whales are sociable and extremely intelligent animals. A good number of them are showing off for the sake of showing off too the humans on shore and loving the attention there getting. Sounds like something people do :D

I feel terrible for the Orcas. Seems wherever they go they get mobbed by people in boats, and boatloads of tourists. Hard enough trying to catch salmon and seals these days without the noise and hassle of stupid human's following your every move.

you could turn your volume down.
This isn't a professional vid. It is a home vid that someone posted to share with us > I am Thrilled to see it And frankly > I enjoy her enthusiasm.
You do have the choice of turning the volume down .. or off.

an incredible spiritual experience I'm sure ~ awesome in so many ways. Has anyone tried to get an estimate count - I got the sense that this was an enormous pod of whales.

They're close to shore it would seem, to avoid the middle of the pass where the tides are at their strongest. You can see the boats fighting the tides, the whales are in close to shore where there's some shelter from the rip.

    Loved watching this!
While I was watching this though, I couldn't help but wonder if they would be this close to the island if it weren't for the 'parade' of boats on the opposing side corralling them. Thoughts?

Saw you on the news last night.....great footage from that little camera you were holding. We saw these whales same day just on the Saltspring side of Active Pass from the Ferry. Great capture....thanks for sharing.
