- We are adding Goldfish to our patio pond and making final design adjustments to the bog filtration system. Learn tips on the minimum size & design of the bog filter. This is the finale video of our Patio Pond with Bog Filter series.
I am building a bog filter for a much bigger pond, watched all your videos and they were very HELPFUL. THANK YOU.
Awesome!!! Thanks for watching!
Love the projects you do. Its amazing one man is doing carpentry, plumbing, aquatics, plant life, physics and chemistry. The PondDigger is too simple a name for you!
You are too kind! Thanks for watching!
Exactly what I'm thinking!
Awesome video series. Looking forward to constructing projects like this in the future. On behalf of all the DIY'ers I want to say thank you for showing us the proper way of doing a bog filter like this.
Man I miss your videos, please come back and make more videos!
Really nice set up Eric! I followed your plans and did a bog next to our pond. I have mint, basil, strawberry's and bell peppers in it. I harvested a really nice crop this past summer.
I always love hearing from you and Annie! Thanks for sharing!
Your look when finishing talk(lets get that start)its mesmerizing with your blue eyes
Thank you so much. I am blushing!
I had to watch this whole series. Even one year into to being a pond owner it was very informative, besides that really weird outro music LOL
best koi pond design! here is my bog fiter, my pond is 8x8 and bog is 3x6 so the bog filter you just did that the bog is same size is the pond is going to be very clean and healthy! very nice.
I watched the entire series and really enjoyed it, and I learned a lot. I can't say that I agree with the homeowners requirements though: Appears they were more concerned with aesthecis than they were the fish...
Amazing. I just binged this nice little series & I am very impressed. You do precise & very aesthetic work. I'm subscribing....
Thank you for the support. If you are on instagram hit me up @theponddigger with some pics of your pond.
This looks amazing, I wish I had the money to build something this big! I'm working on a mini version of this to add to an existing buried preformed pond that was already here. I've got a planter that's water tight and I'm waiting for the pipes to arrive so I can put it together. I'm building it so I can grow food without having to water or feed it. I could just imagine the amount of food you could grow in a planter as big as this one!
econerd Growing veggies in this system works great! We will be shooting a follow up video to this patio pond soon!!!
This is beautiful. I’m planning on building a pond for my Florida soft shell turtle. I have a small yard. Can’t dig in a pond. But He’s getting to big for his tank. I want a pond and filter that I cAn honestly neglect for the most part. I live in Utah want a lot of hardy plants and it will need a heater for winter. This looks like it will work for me. Thank you for some inspiration
Looks good. I think I'm going to incorporate a bog system in my pond next year. This will help. Thanks a lot.
Go For it Soper79!
Greetings sir. Your 12 videos are outstanding and given me some good ideas for around my pond many thanks for shareing them with us all.
+Paul Dixon You are very welcome! Thank you so much for supporting our UA-cam Channel!
Great series, definitely looking forward to build one for my koi pond. Can you please show us how to maintain it . Thanks for the great effort. Cheers
Love your videos! You explain things so clearly and you think of all specifics. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Much appreciated.😉
Love your videos. I am a detail guy and you go over all the details. Only thing I wish you would include is man hours and cost of project if a DYI would do it. Or at least a material cost.
Nice series. FYI, looks like Part 12 (this vid) didn't get properly linked in the series. Also, you mentioned that you might go back in 30 days and shoot a followup, but I didn't find a Part 13. Did the plans change on that?
Awesome build, thank you for sharing your knowledge!
Great stuff. You mentioned you would do a follow-up to see how plants have integrated. Is that coming soon?
Enjoyed the series very much! Great job!!!
+AMonikaD Thank you!
+ThePondDigger Oh! how awesome! I never expected a reply! that is refreshing, thank you for taking the time. so now I do have a question: what zone was this patio pond created? must be a year round warm weather, with the taro growing all year long. I would like to create a pond outdoors with active bog near Toronto Canada. I can not have taro outside. are you aware of what plants can I use that would survive and revive come spring in my zone? I don't mind if it's only one or two plants.
+AMonikaD This water feature is in Southern California with incredibly wonderful weather. The taro does take a hit each winter and we cut it down to the top of the gravel. You will have to figure out what perrinial aquatic plants will work for you in your area.
thanks!
Very nice, love the goldfish and the plants specially the elephant ear :-)
Thank you for sharing your Knowledge.
Nice series. Like the bog setup. Only thing I saw was using power tools without safety glasses.
+Charles Kiplinger My bad! Thanks for watching!
Safety glasses to drill a couple holes - give me a break. I think there are some people that would walk around in a great big condom if they could.
Great series! I need to build something like this.
This patio pond is too small for single tailed goldfish. Goldfish grow to a large size too, if you take good care of them. Most people tend to overlook the growth potential of a goldfish and how big and messy they can be. My biggest goldfish is around 14 inches long and still growing. I've had baby goldfish growing from 0 inches to 7 inches in just 1 pond season. Besides that single tailed goldfish need a lot of water(40 gallons per fish). A pond like this is only suitable for a few fancy goldfish like orandas or ryukins (20 gallons per fish) because they are slow swimmers and need less space(they are still very messy though)
I know the fish in the video are not single tailed but they are wakins, basically a double tailed common goldfish. Those fish could reach 12 inches too ;-)
For the rest your channel is great! Keep it up! :-)
~A fanatic goldfish owner (for the past 15 years)
Amazing work .. Excellent video and very informative ..Thank you for the effort
Thanks!!!
I liked this series. Good job!
Eric, i have a small pond with 3 koi and 3 goldfish (all about 2-3 inches) and i was wondering what I should do with the koi when they get to large for the pond.
Great videos too man!
Liam! Build a BIGGER POND! That's what I would Do! Or donate them to your local koi club. I'm sure they can help you find a home you can donate them to.
Enjoyed the series. Thanks.
Eric. Great work. I have learned that hole saws will kill your battery drill. They are not really made for that low speed tourqe.
Torque. Sorry.
The drill hangs up, heat builds up in the drill and battery and then you may let the smoke out of it. This is for larger hole saws that get out side the size of the chuck
Good to know...
Great videos! Thank you for sharing.
Thanks for your comment Hebert Nogueira! We have many more videos planned. Hope you have subscribed. Tell your friends about our passion for Ponds! Thanks for watching!
Came out awesome!
Great system!
When will we get to see an update to this gorgeous patio pond? :)
I am so facinated about the Bug system so much that I want to do one myself, but I don't live in California, so there are some things to consider and I would like your advice.
But before I start let me clear out something here: does your Bog system have the same concept as an traditional aquaponic system? I mean, the AP (aquaponics) has a
syfon system for the output, der BS (Bog system) has a PCV pipe with holes. Am I compleatly wrong here?
Now to my concerns: I live in Switzerland, I do Bonsai and have fancy goldfisch in the house. The trees go in a small greenhouse starting end october to mit november, dipending on the bonsai spiecies and the temperature
we have. At the moment I have fancy goldfish in the house, but for them it would be much better to be outsite. So my first question: should I take the goldfish inside
during winter season? mybee in the basement or maybee in the greenhouse?
Other questions:
- could I cultivate tomatos and zucchini instead of the tropical plants? They will die here were because the summer is way to short and the winter preatty long.
-In one of the last video's of the Bog series, you explaned the bog/pond ratio of 10%. 300sq ft pond to 30sq ft bog. Now if my goal is to keep beautifull fancy goldfish I have to have a
pond at least 300 sq ft, but knowing how messy and "dirty" my goldfish are, I am wondering if the 30 sq ft bog will do his job propely cleaning up that water?
- I belive I will need a ariation system anyways. I don't like the noise a waterfall, for me is a bit disturbing, well maybee because I want to have peace and quitness when I
come home from a day at the office. So is an airiation system a must if no water dripping is in the system?
I hope you will answer one of my questions on your A.T.P.D series.
Keep cool and cheers from Switzerland
Melanie
scentopink Great questions.......
I know maybe Eric dont have any attention of this old video, but if u have just a little time eric... I want to ask.. how much of direct sunlight that bog area get ? ths is very important for me... thanks n best regards eric... your videos are gold
Nice video!
Awesome pond setup, i was thinking about building an aquaponics system using a in-ground pond. Is there any difference from this setup except the plumbing.
Another great how-to series... thank you! This seems like a great way to get a beautiful pond without excavation and extensive landscaping. BUT... I live in Michigan and we have very cold winters (especially this year!). Would this type of pond allow for year round habitation with fish? I understand I'd need to keep the water moving and therefore prevent freezing. What about the bog? Would I allow it to freeze? Would I have to "rebuild" it every year? Also, I assume that the lower manifold does not require the maintenance of the upper manifold... correct? Thanks!
Hey Damon! Thank you for the question. MI is a tough climate to try and keep fish over the winter. From my experience the pond keepers in your neck of the woods take great measures to keep fish over the winer. My last trip to MI was late September and pond lovers will already brining their fish INDOORS for the winter!! Greenhouses set up over ponds, heaters and other great measures. The water feature in this demonstartion would not overwinter well in MI. You are correct the bottom section of the pond would not need the same maintenance as the upper bog. Hope that helps.
Thanks a bunch. I think this will be the way to go for my first pond. I can't wait for the THAW!
When you were talking about surface area of the bog to the size of your pond does that mean the bog could be shallower as well?
Pouring a bit of water in the bag won't do much to acclimatise the fish in the time they are in the bag. Takes weeks for them to acclimatise to their new environment (including difference in PH). That said, it's definitely worth floating the bag initially, to help lesson the fallout from the change in temp. Lovely looking patio pond!
Very Nice... I am from IRAN and love PONDS , but there is not enough things to make it as well as it is. I used aquarium things to made it .Thanks for your videos.
You should never "acclimate" fish in a bag this way. You can do your own research to see why. It is best to float the bag unopened for about 15 mins just to get the temp of the water the same. Then the fish can be added. The PH and water chemistry does not matter. They should be removed from the bag as quickly as possible after they have been floated long enough to get the temps the same. Once the bag is opened and fresh air gets into the bag, the ammonia because deadly to the fish. This is why we do not acclimate fish in the bag or the bag water anymore because we have learned it is not whats best for the fish. The PH and hardness differences of the water do not effect the fish. All that being said I do love your videos. I watch all of them and this was a great series. Just wanted to give you a heads up about the proper way to acclimate fish.
ahoy! such an educational video series, thank you for showing us this video....Happy new year from the Philippines :D
MARK
Great to hear we have inspired you all the way in the Philippines! Thanks for the comment!
ThePondDigger I've been watching your videos and almost at the end still wanting to watch more :D
Hi Eric. Just curious what the siding was that you used on the sides of the pond system. Looks very clean and sharp.
Thank you for showing a smaller pond. Are those elephant ears, and what type of a water lilly is that? Last, what kind os a heat sink is that black plastic? I thought goldfish liked cool living space, but black plastic seems like it would attract too much heat. thanks
I am curious with the oxygen level in the pond and bog filter. For the bog filter to work effectively as biofilter, it needs oxygen for the nitrification bacteria. I do not see you aerate the pond at all. Even the water return is only so tiny to have serious effect, hence I would be surprise if you have enough dissolved oxygen level for the nitrification bacteria to work well. Do you see any problem with that? Why do you choose not to aerate the system at all?
Very educational exceptional
If the pond is using the overflow and needs attention, do the plants need to be removed, then the gravel to remove the clog?
+Billy Baty No just a good cleaning of the roots.
Love this pond. Is this something that I could get from you guys? If so, how much?
Thanks.
I know you call this a Bog filter, but what if any is the different in this and an aquaponics system? Is there a reason you couldn't grow any kind of plant in the top system? I would love to build one like this for my herbs. Also with non-bog type plants does the 10% rule still apply? Thanks so much for all your videos!
Nice Question
good work thanks
Nice work! I am wondering where one could get those black tubs you are using?
John Wichmann They are a Laguna Pond product. FInd a local Laguna vendor and ask them to special order the piece for you.
I was watching alot of videos on youtube about koi. And I have been to some stores that sold Koi, but they were very small. But that is just what I want because I need to be able to have a tank. I saw a video and the person had a 55 gallon tank with about 5 small koi. Do you think it is ok to have one of those or do I need a bigger tank/pond?
Matt S I think growing koi in an aquarium is a great place to start and I would highly encourage you to do so. Just remember they will out grow that aquarium one day.
Please show us how to maintain this patio pond
Hi! Great series. May I know what's the minimum size for this build? I'm thinking of building this but much smaller scale, maybe 50% of it. Thank you!
YOu can make it as small as you wish! Keep the bog and the fish part to scale and have fun!
Thank you! Will update you on my progress and result
Hmmm, wonder how these bog filters would work in Colorado??? :P
They work perfectly fine in Colorado!
Here's a serious question, If I build a Koi pond about 20' by 20' and three to four feet deep with maybe a island in the middle... How big should the bog filter be???
I was also thinking about maybe a steam going into the pond with a swamp/bog before entering... whats best, or both??? I like the look of both...
A rule of thumb on the bog filter to pond size is 10%. You roughly have a 400 square foot pond so you need at least a 40 square foot bog filter. I would recommend a little more filtration than just a bog filter for your koi pond. I do like the swamp bog stream idea you are talking about!
ThePondDigger Thanks for the reply, But is that 10% (or for me 40sq ft) surface area or filter size? I could do either... And the stream into bog/swamp is gonna be awesome looking! Time to start making the plans.
when choosing your bog plants, my garden center i couldnt convert a peace lily that grew from soil to an emersed setup like a riparium, who do you say
What was the final price for this pond not including plants and fish?
Steve, I didn't figure the cost on this project.....
I like it, but I would have used black PVC pipe on every- thing.
i have been trying to find a place that had wakins, where did you get your wakin goldfish??
What would something like this cost ? ( to have you do all the work? )
I am a 72 and retired. I love this pond system. But, do not have the capability of building one. Would you consider building one for me, and I could put it together? If so, how much? Thanks for sharing this wonderful videos.
eduardo cabrera he will not
Can you help me sir ?
I am doing a patio pond like this . But I dont know when the distribution of fish sucked into the pump and pumped into the filter tank . after a while it will get stuck to the bottom . So we do?
I'm going to build this summer but my ? is I live in Duluth MN and the winter get below zero how do I get it ready for the cold
Would you be able to tell what is the specie of tropical water lilies you have here thank you.
I do not remember it was so long ago. I hope you find what you are looking for.
Few questions,
for smaller container ponds, would I be able to run a planted gravel filled planter with a hole drilled at the bottom pouring over the container pond with no issues? Do you have to clean the bog filter or do the plants absorb all of the waste?
Thanks in advance.
Yes you can filter a small pond like you have suggested. The bigger the better and the less maintenance. Typically you will have to thin the plants out and in doing so you will be opening up (and cleaning) new sections of the bog filter. It is a cycle. For the most part the aquatic plants will work the magic but a little maintenance on occasion will be in order.
ThePondDigger
Thanks for the response. I think instead of draining from the bottom, I'm going to do the same as you did and have it flood the planter from the bottom and exit the top. This way, all the roots get equal flow. Thanks again
I'd love to build a similar pond, I just don't trust my cats if I'd put a goldfish or two in not to maim or kill them. Are you familiar with ways to keep cats away from patio ponds?
How well will the bog filter work on a 1500gl indoor above ground koi pond? I will also have other filtration but would like to incorporate some plant life into it.
For sure!!!
nice
Are yours selling the whole kit this system?
what size pump did you use and how many gallons of water are in the tank part .I have a 300 gallon stock tank I want to try this on.It will use a smaller stock tank as the bog
These tanks are only 160 gallons each or so. Bigger is better! Good luck on your project. Glad we gave you some inspiration.
i noticed you do not have any airation and the amount of water coming from the pipe is not making any airation
kenneth hanaburgh Very good observation. Aeration is very important. The addition of an air pump to this water feature is an outstanding idea especially when the fish mature.
Can we built something similar without the bog filter? ould the fishes survive without the pump?
baljeet ahluwalia If you follow our frog pond installation video you can have a successful goldfish pond. BUT dig it deeper and stock the pond very conservatively. If the goldies breed for you plan on thinning out the babies before they get to big because without aeration you will have a limit on the population! Thanks for the great question!
What do you do if it starts overflowing
what is going to keep raccoons and other animals from sitting on the side and scooping out fish?
where did the tubs come from?
very, very cool.
Thanks for your feedback!
what is the flat varegated maroon and green plant in the pond? What are the depth requirements for this plant? Thanks
so how can i use this for my pond an still keep my water fall
acho que tenho uma dessas planta aqui, orelha de elefante, conhecida aqui no Brasil por inhame cará, comestível! abraço, eu sou Gildasio.
+Garagem 27 Gildasio dos Santos Yes you are right!
Thanks for answering the comment.
How do you winter the pond?
What size is the pond shown
hello
i want to make bog filter system inside my house with three glass tanks
one will be on the top and two on the bottom
all the three containing fish
will this be possible
Yes you can just look up aquaponics and research that topic
how many gallons in the pond
about 150
what about accumulated fish poop?
Acclimized? Lol, still solid info. It's almost too much o.0
What type of goldfish is that?
Just buy the feeder fish you'll pay 29 cents per fish instead of$5.99 ,per fish.
Steve Warren These wakin goldies are quite beautiful with a very distinct tail pattern. But I love me some feeder goldies too. What ever floats your boat. I don't care how much you spend on fish as long as you GET SOME!
Powsss
Can I put axolotls in this pond?
Yes you can but are going to have to make modifications depending on there needs.
great video series, but really painful AND CRINGEY MUSIC.
THOSE FISHES GROW TO MUCH!!!! =(
NEVER PUT KOIS IN A SMALL TANK!!! or SMALL POND!!!
*THAT IS ANIMAL CRUELTY*
they are not koi.
hi ..nice video...im planning to make the same kind of filtration in my pond.....is it ok to use pvc cement to connect the pipes?...is it ok if its not direct to the sun?....ty
