    This explains why some of my "Comet Goldfish", I thought, have long flowing tails and my others don't. This is some very valuable information for me and I've been in this hobby for over 35 years!!! Thanks for posting Tobias.

    In summary there's a difference(an extra for the common goldfish):
    Common goldfish are the oldest variest of goldfish breeds in history, their native range is from China where they were bred for food including their wild precursor, Prussian carp.
    1. Comets have ONLY long fins, hence their name
    2. Comets are metallic
    3. Comets originated in the United States in 1800s by crossbreed a longtail ryukin and a common goldfish by Hugo Mulert
    4. Shubunkins originated in Japan in the later time, at the early 1900s by crossbreed the calico telescope and the comet. There are other kinds of shubunkins of which I'll explain you guys later. One bred by crossing the common and calico telescope as well.
    4. They are nacreous, sometimes they can be a Sakura (nacreous/matted goldfish with red and white coloration, although there are some individuals with little black speckles
    5. Their offspring is heterogeneous, meaning the genes of their colors are not exactly alike to the parents.
    Nacreous x Nacreous =
    25% Nacreous
    50% Matter
    25% Metallic
    Goldfish that are metallic from calico offspring are "uncolored" because their colors resemble to the wild Prussian carp.
    American/Japanese shubunkin have a body resemblance to comets
    London shubunkins have a resemblance to commons. I read that they were bred during WWII in London.
    Bristol shubunkins have an unknown genetic history, it's uncertain of what goldfish bred, but I found that it's first look was bred in Great Britain in 1930s.
    Finally, their nickname is called poor man's koi because not only they are smaller than the Showa and the Sanke koi, they are very cheap.

      金魚ZeZeKingyo could you help answer my question? My fish laid eggs and they are 4 months old. The female are cersa comets and the Male is a london shubunkin (calico). basically I’d like to know if the offsprings will develop colour or will remain mentallic even though the mother is a cersa? Thanks

    • @zezekingyo2374
      @zezekingyo2374 2 місяці тому

      @@sweetbutterfly5 Sorry for such a long comment! I see that you had a thought if they would be formed as metallic, matte, or nacreous you say.
      So, my info is partially outdated other than the history of shubunkins and the heterozygous trait in nacreous. Nacreous and nacreous fish certainly makes 50% Nacreous, 25% Metallic, 25% Matte.
      But crossing a Nacreous and Metallic equals to 50% Metallic, 50% Nacreous. This is because the nacreous trait that is responsible for bringing matte traits out is suppressed by metallic traits of the other fish, and that the metallic phenotype population increased, while the nacreous remains at a 50%. It varies on the bloodline but this is a general rule of thumb.
      The Goldfish Council has such a large information relating to the goldfish genetics, there's this article where it explains scale types and it will show you the part where the info on nacreous exists.

    I have a suggestion for research of a video... My favorite fancy goldfish is the Froghead/toadhead yet there’s little to no info out there on it.
    It’s a hybrid mix between an eggfish and a bubble eye. And one breeder I asked questions to said when he bred them, out of 1000 eggs he only got 8 pure Froghead. 😓
    I bought one right before Christmas last year and it died only 3 days of getting him I was so upset! I told the breeder and no good answers to why he died because I’ve been keeping fancy goldfish for a long time now. I am not a newbie so I’m trying to find another Froghead.
    Anyways, long comment but wanted to share that and ask if you could do a video on frogheads 🐸🐡

    Are london shubunkins more hardy then japenese shubunkins, because i heard common are more hardy then comets

    • @TobiasHolenstein
      @TobiasHolenstein  2 роки тому +1

      I can't say for certain, but in my experience with goldfish, the more hardy ones are the ones that are most similar to the "wild" goldfish. So I would imagine that the Japanese shubunkin would be more hardy than the London/bristol shubunkin because the London shubunkins appear to have a rounder body (kind of like a fancy goldfish)

    Could I keep a shubunkin in a big tank with a black moore ??

    • @TobiasHolenstein
      @TobiasHolenstein  4 роки тому

      In my opinion, I think it would be fine. A lot of people say not to keep fancy goldfish with long bodied goldfish because there will be unfair competition over food, because the long bodied goldfish will get the food quicker than the fancy goldfish. However, I have an oranda goldfish in my pond and it doesn't seem to have trouble getting food. Just make sure the black moor is getting food

    It's the usual with science, the answer is rarely simple and you are forced to dig a long time for the answer. Thank you for helping. Apparently here in Hawaii comets can eat cane toad tadpoles, or at least a certain number, without dying.. The cane toads are a major pest here so this is very important.

    • @TobiasHolenstein
      @TobiasHolenstein  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Elizabeth, thank you! I don't have personal experience with keeping fish in these temperatures, but from what I understand, goldfish can survive below freezing temps as long as the water quality is still good and they receive plenty of oxygen and of course the pond shouldn't completely freeze. I believe in zone 7 goldfish will most likely go into hibernation and during the months leading up to winter they should be well fed. If the goldfish themselves freeze, they will not survive. If a layer of ice forms you will probably need a pond heater or de-icer to keep an opening in the ice to allow gas exchange. Hope that helps!
