    Thanks so much for this addition to your great information. I continue to gather material for the bog filter I'm going to make for my hundred gallon stock tank. I do think I'm going to have my filtration going from bottom.to top,.for the additional aeration and sound.
    No matter the filtration direction, your videos are proof positive that bog filtration (regardless of size) is a win/win!!

    1:42 in. Notice the staining on the inside of the pipe looks like Thomas Jefferson. You'll need to press pause.

    I tried some of the golden white cloud mountain minnows outside in a small pond and they did great and bred and looked super red/orange. I loved them but then so did the wild snakes that visit my ponds and now I am down to my last one. I really was hoping to keep them going but I guess I have too many hungry snakes in my area. I am in south Louisiana. I now want to give rice fish a try if I can find any. I have as yet to try a bog filter. I just use a ton of plants hanging in pots on the rims of my little ponds and that seem to work out well and I don't need any pump, which is good since I loose electricity pretty often because falling tree branches when it rains - we get heavy down pours.

      Sorry about your fish losses. I’ve got issues with birds at the moment. Love that you were able to filter the water with just plants. I’m starting to experiment more and more with no pump ponds.

    Love the videos - I'm starting a pond myself (around 5500 litres) and looking for an upright barrel for a bog/wetland filtration system. I'm based in the US and most of the options I'm seeing are $700 - $1,000 for a 550L barrel. Do you have any DIY tips or less-expensive alternatives?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Рік тому

      You can usually find second hand IBC’s for around $100-200 here in Oz. They will hold 1000 litres. They are ugly looking but you can use some pallet wood and dress them up nice. They are cool in that they already have a cleanout valve built in.

    You inspired us to build our own! We don't have electricity outside, which means we decided to go with a solar pump. I don't think it has a battery backup, but it arrives tomorrow so I'll know more then. I'm guessing it will probably shut off every night. Do you think that will be a problem in a small pond setup like this? And how do you do the air intake on this pond, in case your pump loses electricity? Thank you for your videos!

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Рік тому

      As long as you use a hardy fish. Something like white clouds or rice fish you should be fine. No need for a breather pipe if you just let the water spill in over the top of the filter. Or you can add one in exactly the same way as the larger filters you just use smaller tubing and valves.

    • @charlesc5157

      There are cheaper solar pumps for ponds with battery backup you can get for $40 Australian which works really well.

    Have you ever done a mini bog filter for an aquarium? Or how would you do a something similar for an aquarium?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Рік тому

      I haven’t. But would be really easy. You’re just going for a slow flow through the media. I should do one. 👍

      Look for some videos on above-the-tank-sumps and aquaponic setups for aquariums. There are some great videos on youtube about them.

    Thanks for the great video Kev and you have certainly given me the inspiration to build my own pond! Im curious do the plants in the bog filter grow in the clay balls alone or does some soil need to go into them? Also do the plants in the pond itself grow in the clay balls? Do you need a method to prevent clay/soil getting into the pump?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Рік тому +1

      I like to rinse off all soil. In the pond I plant the marginals, oxygenators directly into the pebble, again no soil. Water lilies I use soil and fertiliser or kitty litter and fertiliser, both topped with pebbles.

    I think that this is a super little pond. I am hoping to get a larger pond for my patio than I have now. 1.5 m square and 80cm deep. My local fish shop were telling me to buy an easy pod automatic filter for the above ground pond. I , however nearly fell off my chair when I saw the price of these filters at home. Surely even a top filter like the easy pod is still not as good as a bog filter? What do you think Kev? 😊🐟🐡🦋🐝🌻☀️

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Рік тому +2

      All pond filters rely on the same bacteria. A bog is cheap, simple and it works. No need to spend a fortune.

      @Ozponds Please Kev ,when I get my bigger pond may I confirm with you the size of pump I should buy and also the size of the bog container as I don't want to make any more silly beginner mistakes. I really value your expertise.

      @@Ozponds You are very kind and helpful. I had to rescue one of my baby fish yesterday she was lying on her side on the bottom of the pond. She is doing a little bit better now , inside my kitchen in a makeshift hospital tank , poor little thing. 😪🐟

    Awesome! Really want to try this in the spring here in south Alabama! Probably a silly question, but do you think the bog filter will attract mosquitos? I want to have a patio pond with mosquito fish and try this bog filter. I’m a complete beginner but my assumption is that the fish will eat any mosquito larvae, but what about the the big filter above? Is that an area of concern?

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  7 місяців тому +1

      The way this filter is designed the media in the filter sits higher than water level. Therefore there is no standing water for the mosquitoes 👍

    Hey mate, thanks for sharing these information, I am in Melbourne and thinking of setting up a mini pond in a pot. I saw your other video where you said in the comments section the glass shrimp didn’t survive the winter. Could you please give me some advice on what mini fish and cleaning crew (shrimp, snail) I can use who can withstand Melbourne winter provided that the mini pond would be outside but would be next to a wall. Thanks

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  9 місяців тому +1

      Regular cherry shrimp work, or you can catch local shrimp. The ones online tend to come from Queensland and I think that’s why they didn’t survive.

      @@Ozponds thanks for the reply. Am I correct in saying even if the fish species originally is capable of handling cold, if they were bread in tropical environment for multiple generations then they lose the cold climate adaptability? Thanks for the explanation, by the way do you know a breader in Melbourne who sell white loud minnows and cherry ship which are bread in outdoor ponds? You don’t by any chance sell, do you? Cheers

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  9 місяців тому +1

      I’m not sure if that’s the case. My whiteclouds were purchased from a pet shop many years ago. They were breed for aquariums not sure if they were in warm water or cold water. Same with the Cherry shrimp. I don’t sell fish transport seems tricky and I’m a hermit, I’m not keen on the idea of having people come to my house for pickups.

    Hi did you have to alter your pumps flow rate? i've just set up a small bog for my barrel pond and the pump overflows the bog even on the lowest flow rate (pump is 400lph bog is 25l) i realise its a bit big for the bog but even with flow turned right down its still overflowing

    • @Ozponds
      @Ozponds  Рік тому

      Not I’m this pond. But it’s only overflowing because the water can’t escape fast enough. You need to increase the size of the overflow or add more holes to the gravel guard. That’s why it’s always good to test before filling with media 👍
