Soundgarden lead singer Chris Cornell wrote this about how he suffered from a severe case of depression during his teenage years, rarely leaving the house. At one point, he spent a whole year without leaving his house, during which time he would play drums and guitar. Per songfacts : In 1994, Chris Cornell spoke to Melody Maker about creating the song and the meaning behind it. "'Fell On Black Days' was like this ongoing fear I've had for years. It took me a long time to write that song. We've tried to do three different versions with that title, and none of them have ever worked," he said. "It's a feeling that everyone gets. You're happy with your life, everything's going well, things are exciting - when all of a sudden you realize you're unhappy in the extreme, to the point of being really, really scared. There's no particular event you can pin the feeling down to, it's just that you realize one day that everything in your life is f--ked!"
I do prefer the studio recording, but this is still good. These types of Chris Cornell songs are lyrically haunting when you listen back to them today.
Chris Cornell, my soul brother... I grew up with his words in my head, hard teen years, every word I could feel and relate to, especially his solo music. We he died I left work and drove a few hours to the sea staring out in night in the black and the black ocean. I saw a tiny little light out there,. Probably a ship. I imagined it was chris' soul sailing the black seas to beyond, I promised to myself and his memory it was time to turn around. I got myself sober and many things have happened for the better. RIP Chris, thank you brother, some day I'll get to tell you that, maybe we can jam in the great beyond.
This song speaks to me since depression is something I’ve suffered from for years, ever since childhood. His vocals in this song are amazing to me. Great reaction guys 👌🏼👍🏼🙌🏼👏🏼💜🇨🇦
I feel proud, having been wishing to watch you two listen to this particular song for so long and here we finally are, thank you 🙌 Rest in peace Chris Cornell
I love Fell On Black Days, but The Day I Tried To Live is my favourite of the two, even tho it's just a little ahead. I'd love to see a reaction to it, too. I've never seen one... & yes, it's definitely underrated!
There are so many brilliant Soundgarden songs and it’s a shame that many people only know the 3 most played on radio; “Black Hole Sun” “Outshined” and “Fell On Black Days”. I’d love to hear reactions to “Room A Thousand Years Wide”, “4th Of July”, “Slaves and Bulldozers”, “Spoonman”...I could go on for hours with amazing Soundgarden songs that would be great to hear reactions too and YES “The Day I Tried To Live” would be on the list!
Suffering people become artists for expressing what's inside them not to get famous. Fame was never meant to be the answer and what do you mean with "if someone has achieved this what else is there to achieve?" How about everything? Because fame only matters to those who give a damn about what others think about yourself....and basing you life around the opinions of others is the most toxic thing you can do. So a) the suffering of the artist hasn't changed and b) only those who do art for themselves and are genuine really reach people so naturally the succes won't change anything for them but the pressure rises because of more tempations on the one side and more duties on the other. Touring...management....business...make records with a deadline. Your hobby and passion is now a business and sometimes that kills everything. Including the artist.
Yup. Always drives me nuts that. Im an artist, mainly paint and draw, but its an outlet i must do lol. I feel most at one with myself whe i do. So, i get that. All art forms are like this...heck, for some ppl its sport ?. But yes, artists tend to have colorful backgrounds lol.
So happy you two reviewed this one. Chris' vocal style was more subdued here, except in a few moments, but still awesome. I would definitely recommend "Burden in my hand" or "Blow up the outside world" for more of Chris' amazing vocal range. Great reaction/review Vin and Sori. Hope you feel better Sori!!
@@BongEyedBastard No it really doesn't. They're both special in their own way. Chris makes it sound so personal, & that's the key ingredient to knocking those types of songs outa the park. The Cornell version is very special to a lot of people. If the Sinèad version is special for you, i'm happy for ya, but neither pales the other.
It's a good song, but also one of their hits. They have a lot of cool songs that are underrated but still cool (at least in my view, if you listen to whole albums, you find some really cool ones on your own) Spin the Black Circle, Betterman, Nothingman, Blood, Animal, Rats, Elderly Woman..., Daughter... so many great songs, besides, Even Flow, Jeremy, Alive, Black : D
I agree...they have a lot of great songs and no dispute any of the songs you listed are great choices. I just suggest Even Flow...because of the subject matter (homelessness)...I know it is something that V&S and PJ/Eddie care deeply about and the official video is just kick ass and gives people a real feel of what a live performance of PJ is like. Porch @pinkpop would also be a great reaction.
Chris Cornell was the whole package. He was a rocker, an artist, humanitarian, animal rescuer for abused and homeless dogs, kabam. But the world around him slowly stopped noticing or stopped appreciating everything that he did.
Chris Cornell still one of the best. Nothing compares to you his live version he did in the Sirius studios will make you cry. Love what you guys do. Merry Christmas , cheers from Saskatchewan
it's not situational, it's conditional. He's not singing about bad things happening or being dissatisfied. He's singing about chronic, clinical depression.
Two songs by Pearl Jam that tslk about Eddie'd main psychological/emotioanl issue during his life: his father. First do: Alive - live Pinkpop The story of his discovery of it. The second half of the song is fantasy. Then: Release - live Arena di Verona 2006 Super emotional song that they had wrote and he improvised at one of their first rehearsals. @@aceldamia9114 True. I just want them to focus more on the Eddie's real part since they seem to be interested in those aspects more. But the whole trilogy would be cool too!
I'd love to see you guys listen to 'Rowing' by Soundgarden. It's my favourite song of all time - it's the last song on their last album, lyrics are fairly simple but it resonates a lot. 'Tighter and Tighter' is definitely worth a listen, too, just for Chris' voice.
Cornell on "Fell on Black Days":"Fell on Black Days" was like this ongoing fear I've had for years ... It's a feeling that everyone gets. This is a good song, but I always preferred The Day I Tried to Live from the same album. You should consider looking at that for the next Soundgarden pick.
Like Pearl Jam’s Evenflow live video, it was recorded live just for the video. A testament to how good they are when it’s hard to decipher if it’s the same track or not.
RIP Chris Cornell. 1991 San Diego. Mattalica opening act for Guns and Roses. The lead singer got burned from fireworks display and cancelled. We got SoundGarden instead to open for GNR .. RIP Chris Cornell and Chester Bennington. Chris one of the absolute greatest voices ever. Layne Staley losing him was a crushing blow for his fans.
Cool, not sure if someone already posted this, but that version is actually performed live. It’s a great version, a little loose; but the actual album version has a very different and tight, almost alternative sound. It’s probably the one you should hear as it sounds amazing in headphones. Just a thought.
warlok9 I don't think the loose vibe does this song any favors. It lacks the muscle found on the studio session, which makes you feel the blackness. And the tightness you mention is important because this isn't one of Kim Thayil's longer solos. He does a lot in a short period to give the song color. Plus, this is obviously a strained vocal performance by Cornell. The album version is one of the best use of Cornell's at the time new-found low register, and he could still hit the high stuff clean.
Well, gee. You can't do Soundgarden without doing Mother Love Bone's Chloe Dancer/Crown Of Thorns. As backstory (A lot of this, if not all, was probably covered in the comments for Temple Of The Dog, Soundgarden and/or Pearl Jam): Mother Love Bone was an amazing band that existed to way too short of a time, due to Wood overdosing on heroin days before their debut album was to be released. At the time of his death, the common consensus was that they would be the Seattle band that would make it big. The people in the band, along with close friends, would go on to form the backbone of the Seattle grunge/rock scene. Connections: Temple Of The Dog was a tribute album for Andrew Wood. The Alice In Chains song "Would?" is about Wood. Mother Love Bone members Jeff Amant and Stone Gossard would go on to form Pearl Jam. All Soundgarden is great (this one in particular is one of the best late era songs) but you keep doing the wrong songs. You need to check out Slaves and Bulldozers. Quite a different sound early on. This was a weird version as well. It didn't seem like it was live. Yet its not the original studio version I have.
BTW this is a live version, and one of those rare cases where I'd prefer the studio version. Cornell had a great recording session for this track. You guys need to hear the original to experience how magical that vocal track is.
Depression is something even doctor's cannot agree on. Nobody really knows why or how the lens one is looking through is dark and full of people lying to keep things together. Depression is real and it is very dark... Very dark indeed. Rarely however are things always as they seem. Best to you guys!
Of all the #Seattle bands, #Soundgarden to me created the darkest music. Darker than Alice in Chain, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, even #MotherLoveBone. The guys from Pearl Jam came out of Mother Love Bone. May I suggest the next full album review. #Superunknown by yes, Soundgarden
Infamous Dominion I agree. AIC, for all their misery and sludginess, were always earthbound. Their songs made you feel lonely while surrounded by everyone you know. They may be sick or dying, maybe you're ruining their lives. But it's real. Soundgarden's darkness was found on another plane, though. Wherever you found yourself now, the songs left you feeling like there weren't any people at all.
Fell on Black Days is so powerful and really hits home with many people who suffer with depression (like Chris himself). As with many artists, lyrics can be applied to more than a single experience or meaning, but my feel is that he was referring to the depression that he has struggled with his whole life. The studio version is almost the most perfect song ever created. No need to react to it, but PLEASE check it out when you have time. Great insight and perspective as usual. Thanks.
Back before that whole Taylor Swift thing, Tom Hiddleston used to tweet sometimes. One day a fan wrote to him that he had saved her life. He replied, "You saved yourself. Everything you think you see in me is actually you. Be proud." I still think about that sometimes.
I keep waiting for another PJ video. Specifically Porch - Pink Pop '92. But was also thinking you should listen to the most grunge song ever, Even Flow. Keep up the good work!
SoundGarden= "Day I Tried To Live" Alice in Chains Live Layne's last show="GOD AM" or "Rain When I Die" or Sea Of Sorrow".... Layne Died of an OD, the original bassist Mike Starr also died of an OD.. Chris Cornell had fought addiction as well. Chester Bennington Killed himself 2 months after Chris ON CHRIS 'S 53RD BIRTHDAY!
Layne and Chris had addiction problems both died as a result of it one from overdose the other by his own hands, they will be missed by many RIP to both amazing singers. Other good Soundgarden songs are, THE DAY I TRIED TO LIVE, or MY WAVE
I feel like with all these early 90’s reactions you guys should seriously check out Jeff Buckley. He had that grunge sound but I think there was so much more that can be pulled from his music. He was most known for his cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” His original music was far better imo. Check out his song Grace.
Vocals on loan from the Divine. Chris was quite simply one of the greatest rock voices and talent. Will be missed. RIP Chris C. Please play the real version from now on.
Only adding this: the thing Chris Cornell has fight to a tragic loss to it is depression, in the clinical sense. And has lost his life to it. And yes, Fell on Black Days and The Day I tried to live are the two song that more express what really Chris was feeling.
SoundGarden saw them live in San Diego they were the opening act for Guns N Roses . Amazing shows two of the best front men ever . Chris Cornell RIP beautiful angel 😇
Can I please help kick the ass if anyone that has anything to say about the mixed race thing? Some people are just stuck in 1918... or 1978.... so sad. Wishing nothing but the best to you two and the whole fam!
Falling on black days is a part of being alive. There are internal and external stresses that wear a person down, both physically and mentally. They key is to destress the mind daily. If not, all of that negative energy will hit you out of no where.
I hiked the appalachian trail in 2001. Completely solo and southbound. After 2200miles I got to the end point. I was alone and it was raining. I felt nothing.
Guys you have to know that Chris Cornell was deeply affected by the deaf of Andy Wood friend and roommate. Andy was lead singer of mother love bones and was the 1st noticeable heroine overdose in the Seattle scene part of mother love bone went on to found pearljam with eddy Vedder and the collaboration of sound garden and pearljam on temple of a dog was an homage to Andy. Hope that will help you put into context a lot of the gloomy writing by those 2 bands.peace guys love you.
Great song guys, that album deserves a complete review. The fact that Chris Cornell is gone it's still painful. Please react to "Nothing Is Not" by Morbid Angel and "In Their Darkened Shrines" by Nile.
VinAndSori: For your own personal enjoyment, please read Robert A. Heinlein's "Job, A Comedy Of Justice" published in 1984. It is a sharp satire of organized religion. Heinlein himself was agnostic. This was the last book he had published before his death in 1988 at 80 years of age.
Soundgarden - Fell on Black Days Lyrics (from genius . com) Whatsoever I feared has come to light And whatsoever I've fought off became my life Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile Sunspots have faded, now I'm doin' time, now I'm doin' time [Chorus] 'Cause I fell on black days I fell on black days [Verse 2] Whomsoever I've cured, I've sickened now And whomsoever I've cradled, I've put you down I'm a searchlight soul, they say, but I can't see it in the night I'm only faking, when I get it right, when I get it right [Chorus] 'Cause I fell on black days I fell on black days [Bridge 1] How would I know That this could be my fate? How would I know That this could be my fate? [Verse 3] 'Til what you wanted to see good has made you blind And what you wanted to be yours has made it mine So, don't you lock up somethin' that you wanted to see fly Hands are for shaking, no, not tying, no, not tying [Bridge 2] I sure don't mind a change I sure don't mind a change Sure don't mind... sure don't mind a change I sure don't mind a change [Chorus] 'Cause I fell on black days I fell on black days [Bridge 1] How would I know that this could be my fate? How would I know that this could be my fate? How would I know that this could be my fate? How would I know that this could be my fate? [Outro] I sure don't mind a change
You guys should watch the documentary Metal a head bangers journey. It's basically the history of the different metal sub cultures from the view point of anthropology. A review of it from you two would be awesome. Maybe even do like a live stream and watch it with patrons that donate and give the money from the stream to a charity for the homeless.
Lots of Chris' friends had drug problems and died as a result. For a long time Chris stayed clean, but eventually he fell into it. He struggled constantly thereafter with drug addiction. So difficult to fly that close to the flame without getting burned.

This was a weird version as well. It didn't seem like it was live. Yet its not the original studio version I have.
This one is great, more emotional
@@dagobertopulido7650 this is great, I agree but more emotional than Slaves and Bulldozers? I don't think so. Different emotions.
BadMoterFinger.
Tighter and Tighter
This was a live recording made for the music video
BTW this is a live version, and one of those rare cases where I'd prefer the studio version. Cornell had a great recording session for this track. You guys need to hear the original to experience how magical that vocal track is.
Slaves and Bulldozers by Soundgarden!!!!
Do it!!!!!!
You don't know Soundgarden until you hear this song!
Slaves and Bulldozers!!!!!!
Please!
Black Sabbath - Falling Off The Edge Of The World
I recommend Soundgarden - Like suicide :) its a great display of his vocal power starting from calm to singing his heart out
Arch Enemy - We Will Rise + Fields of Desolation ( LIVE Tyrants of the Rising Sun)
Depression is something even doctor's cannot agree on. Nobody really knows why or how the lens one is looking through is dark and full of people lying to keep things together. Depression is real and it is very dark... Very dark indeed. Rarely however are things always as they seem. Best to you guys!
Soundgarden: Slaves and Bulldozers
Tighter and Tighter
JoDe Te my fav Soundgarden song
Please go back to Megadeth some time on Mainstage.
Yes! Looking Down the Cross please! Not really a Mainstage song, but it should be.
My favourite Soundgarden's song!!!! Yes!
gringopablo Mine too. #Seasons is my favorite Chris Cornell song of all time.
Please do outshined or the day I tried to live by soundgarden
Soundgarden- Holy Water
Temple of the Dog - Say Hello to Heaven" great vocals. Talks about his close friend who was the lead singer of Mother Love Bone band.
Thanks.
Temple of the Dog "Say hello to heaven."
them bones - alice in chains
R.I.P. Chris Cornell! Wish you'd stayed with us. You had so much more music to make!
Please react to Burden in my hand, or Doesn't remind me next, PLEASE. Chris Cornell had such a beautiful voice and his lyrics were pure poetry.
Anthrax - In the End, In My World, Indians, Inside Out and What Doesn't Die
Back before that whole Taylor Swift thing, Tom Hiddleston used to tweet sometimes. One day a fan wrote to him that he had saved her life. He replied, "You saved yourself. Everything you think you see in me is actually you. Be proud." I still think about that sometimes.
Nirvana The Man Who Sold The World (MTV Unplugged) Please Thank You
I keep waiting for another PJ video. Specifically Porch - Pink Pop '92. But was also thinking you should listen to the most grunge song ever, Even Flow. Keep up the good work!
Suicidal Tendencies - You Can't Bring Me Down
SoundGarden= "Day I Tried To Live" Alice in Chains Live Layne's last show="GOD AM" or "Rain When I Die" or Sea Of Sorrow"....
Rip Chris Cornell
It's funny because. I was just listening to this earlier today, thinking its oiled be cool for the two of you to do a video on it
SoundGarden saw them live in San Diego they were the opening act for Guns N Roses .
I'm surprised you haven't reacted to the other Seattle area grunge band known as Screaming Trees.
Yes that and Gruntruck
Hell yes! Mark Lanegan is incredible!
Nearly Lost You is the obvious entry point IMO.

Soundgarden - Fell on Black Days Lyrics (from genius . com)
Whatsoever I feared has come to light
And whatsoever I've fought off became my life
Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded, now I'm doin' time, now I'm doin' time
[Chorus]
'Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days
[Verse 2]
Whomsoever I've cured, I've sickened now
And whomsoever I've cradled, I've put you down
I'm a searchlight soul, they say, but I can't see it in the night
I'm only faking, when I get it right, when I get it right
[Chorus]
'Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days
[Bridge 1]
How would I know
That this could be my fate?
How would I know
That this could be my fate?
[Verse 3]
'Til what you wanted to see good has made you blind
And what you wanted to be yours has made it mine
So, don't you lock up somethin' that you wanted to see fly
Hands are for shaking, no, not tying, no, not tying
[Bridge 2]
I sure don't mind a change
I sure don't mind a change
Sure don't mind... sure don't mind a change
I sure don't mind a change
[Chorus]
'Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days
[Bridge 1]
How would I know that this could be my fate?
How would I know that this could be my fate?
How would I know that this could be my fate?
How would I know that this could be my fate?
[Outro]
I sure don't mind a change
You have the best reaction videos much respect
"like suicide" by SoundGarden, "switch opens" by SoundGarden , "Cochise" Audioslave, "tighter n tighter" by SoundGarden.
The killing joke that guy who made that doc is a softy and his part on black metal is almost as gay as “until the light takes us”
but it’s still kinda good and produced well
Such a great documentary
@@1969bass gay? softy? You sound like you're coming from the last century. Am I right when I think you voted for Trump?
Soundgarden - Beyond The Wheel (Live in Germany 1990) or Mailman (Live Mtv)
Lots of Chris' friends had drug problems and died as a result. For a long time Chris stayed clean, but eventually he fell into it. He struggled constantly thereafter with drug addiction. So difficult to fly that close to the flame without getting burned.
Soundgarden - 4th july
Love your reactions guys.
