This was during the [War of 1812]. This battle took place at Fort McHenry at Baltimore Harbor in 1814. The British shelled and canon barrage Fort McHenry for 25hrs. with no reliefs. They (British)were not successful in bringing down the flag or over taking Fort McHenry.
The Soldier, Sailors and Marines of Fort McHenry defended the fort valiantly and courageously. Giving their last full measure of devotion. Their lives were not lost in vain.
The Americans won the "War of 1812" and settled with the British in the Treaty of Ghent. They sent the British back to England with their tail between their legs. God Bless America!

The United Sates settled with Great Britain in the Treaty of Ghent. The war was fought for several reasons but mainly because the British were commandeering American merchant ships (and forcing the crew into the British Navy) headed for France, whom the British were at war with. American "profiteers" were commandeering British merchant ships and locking up their crew. The Brits burned Washington because American troops had burned towns on the Canadian Border, and were going to Baltimore to apparently do the same to that city or worse. The sides agreed to a treaty (even though it didn't settle the merchant ship part-the US was given the right to expand in the Great Lakes) but the news had not yet made it to New Orleans where American forces won a battle there, defeating a British force after the war was over.

One of the men who died fighting in the fort was Private William Williams, a black soldier and runaway slave. He was hit in the leg by a cannonball while defending the flag.

Note that the last line is not a statement, but a question, because at the time there was still a long way to go to achieve the dream of natural rights for all men, just as it is today. It is a question posed to each generation, because it is up to each generation to pick up that flag and carry on the fight.
Cowards kneel and live on their knees over the inequality among men.
Patriots will risk their fortunes and lives to do something about it.

There was a Fort Henry, but it has nothing to do with the Star-Spangled Banner. Francis Scott Key didn’t negotiate the release of a ship full of men. He was there to negotiate for one single man. They weren’t on a British ship during the bombardment. They were on an American ship, but the British didn’t allow them to leave the harbor until after the battle. The flag pole was not held up by men who kept getting killed by the bombs. There weren’t hundreds of British ships firing on the fort and it wasn’t the entire Royal Navy. There was actually very little damage done to the fort. Lastly, had the fort surrendered, it would not have placed America under British rule. The speaker in this video has taken an actual event and filled it with untruths.

Goosebumps and tears is a common reaction to this recitation. It’s why we never disrespect our flag. It represents the lengths our Patriots went to preserve our freedom. They were truly brave men and deserving of our respect. The flag represents we the people more so than our government. One irony. The red glare of bombs bursting in air gave proof that our flag was still there. The method of their demise also provided hope. Every child needs to see this video.

my memories are a bit faded, so while my numbers won't be exact, they'll be close.
there were not "hundreds" of british ships, there were 17. and only 12~14 actually fired shells. others were trying to quickly sail past to attack the town, but were intercepted by american naval forces
the american death toll was very small. less than 10 IIRC.
the fort was not "fort henry", it was fort _*McHenry*_.
it was indeed a military fort (as if there is another kind?) with virtually *_NO_* "women and children".
FSK went to the brits to negotiate for the release of a single prisoner, a doctor and friend of the family.
those quotes attributed to the "founding fathers" are not simply wrong, they are willfully skewed to conform to the christian sermon that this speech was part of (listen for the "amens" in the audience).
the captives were not constantly asking about the state of the flag. nor were they praying en mass. there are no reports of this behavior in any of the sources.
if we're going to talk about the lyrics of the national anthem, then let's talk about *_ALL_* of it, not just the first verse.
as you can see, this story was wantonly and woefully misrepresented by the person that made and published the original video. i encourage you to look for scholarly sources of your choosing to verify and validate my statements. as i mentioned before, i am an old man and my memory isn't what it used to be, so i am sure my numbers will be a bit off, but they will still be closely representative of the facts. and they are *_certainly_* magnitudes more reliable than the person that created the reviewed video.

There are a few mistakes in The narrative. The Revolutionary War was 1775 to 1783. It was the War of 1812 we won both wars so we weren't colonies. Both wars were Americans against England. And the amount of ships weren't hundreds it was a few dozen but it was still Francis Scott Key and during that fight he was kept prisoner. The flag still exists in the Smithsonian Museum in Washigton DC. It's huge and I saw it. 30 feet by 42 feet originally now 30 feet by 38 feet. Francis Scott Key wrote the poem not the music.

The main battle happened as a delaying retreat down a Peninsula towards Baltimore. The British had been raiding the communities along the coast and had burned Washington DC. Key write this as a poem and it was set to music later. It was not formally adopted as the National Anthem until 1931. Slavery filled the earth through serfdom and trade, but the flag being lowered, meant the Americans on land, were surrendering and were returning back to slavery under king George. But they had a taste of freedom and were never going to be slaves to any monarch, ever again.
Though, the Star Spangled Banner is uniquely the American anthem, its truths are universal, meaning that it is humanity's anthem and why those who are drawn to the truth of freedom at all cost, bravely lay down their lives for it, so that others could immigrate here and above all other nations, finally have freedom. And think of how freedom traveled around the world, because America was free and helping others to be free. As a British man. I won't apologise for anything my country done.
What I will do as a British man, is pay absolute tribute to all them American men that stood in the face of such a force against them.
God bless Great Britain and United States of America🇬🇧🇺🇸

Love watching your all's reaction to this. Asia the look on your face and the goose bumps you got are how I feel whenever I hear the Anthem. I knew this story, but still love hearing it. I enjoy watching your reaction video's to things that don't seem to be taught in schools anymore or reported by the main stream media. God Bless America and keep up the good work. Oh Yeh we are neighbors. I live in Rowlett, Just a stones throw away.

This should be a requirement for all peolple who sing our national anthem publically to watch this video. They will understand the emotions and impact of our national anthem. As a veteran, the majority of people know how we feel about the flag so I won’t recite what my brothers and sisters already said. But for anyone singing our anthem, should understand the meaning of the Star Spangled Banner.

We won the American Revolutionary War and gained our independence from Britain in 1776, but if I'm not mistaken this was the War of 1812 when the British tried to come back and attempted to retake & tried to conquer the USA (a case of "sour grapes," Britain a "Super-Power" at the time, previously losing to the 13 Colonies hurt their pride & left a bad taste in their mouth), but they obviously "FAILED" because we've been standing as a country ever since!!! No country is perfect, all countries have past & current issues; and every country has it's flag, a Pledge of Allegiance and either a National Hymn or a National Anthem with some type of history attached to it...MUCH RESPECT and HONOR to our Flag "Old Glory," to our Pledge of Allegiance and to our National Anthem!!! Huge "KUDOS" to all of our Veterans: past, present & future who by God's grace make it possible for us enjoy our FREEDOM!!! Mic Drop!!! 🎤

I think the question you meant to ask was, did we win that battle, not whether or not we won the war. We obviously won the war of independence, otherwise we'd be splitting the British flag rather than U. S. flag. The war for independence was officially & historically set in 1776 & lasted several years. Most of the founding Fathers were either killed or ended their lives on the run as Britan tried to hunt them down. Not all survived or gained any personal benefit from the war for freedom. The colonies gave 26 reasons to separate, one of the top reasons was America didn't want to continue having slavery imposed on it.

My thoughts everytime I hear the National Anthem:
This history and sacrifice of our brave service members who may be in danger at this moment taking care of us (and we'll never know what they've been assigned to do), Navy Seals, those who are away in other countries missing out on a child's birth or milestone (and the spouses keeping the homefront going) and the newest recruits who have left home to go through rigorous training to become our newest protectors of freedom, and being blessed to enjoy wherever it is this song is playing (usually a sports event or celebration).
Home of the free because of the brave!

He first wrote it as a poem. Someone put the music to it later. The British signed a peace treaty a couple of months later. This is why the flag is never supposed to touch the ground still today.

It's an amazing story behind the US anthem. The narrator does get his wars and forts mixed up though. Fort Henry is in West Virginia. The fort in the song is Fort McHenry in Baltimore. Also since this was the War of 1812 (not the War of Independence), there were no colonies. It was the USA by that time. I think Britain won the war, but we were far more invested in war with Napoleon.

We won!! The British burned the White House to the ground and the President’s wife, Dolly Madison, took the portrait of George Washington and escaped just in front of the British Troops. They regrouped and came back and defeated the British.
This was the definitive win for us, our first as the United States 🇺🇸. England backed off forever and sued for peace after this.

The War of 1812 ended in a draw and France got us into that war (if I recall correctly) and then bailed as soon as the US declared war on Great Britain. A treaty was signed, but didn’t reach New Orleans in time and Andrew Jackson kicked the sh*t out of the British. The Battle of New Orleans is an amazing story.

Hello, from Havana, Cuba! First, I must tell you that I am very impressed by your channel (I have become a bit addicted). Then I wanted to tell you that this journey of discovery about your own history is not only precious, but VERY important. George Santayana (Spanish-American philosopher) said: "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it"... a truth and a warning that unfortunately most do not take seriously. I wish both the best and I will continue to see you. Love, from what was "The Pearl of the Caribbean" more than 60 years ago, and is now a Purgatory where dreams find burial.

When I was in elementary school back in the early 1970s every student in my class was required to sing or recite the Star Spangled Banner. We also had to explain the meaning of each line of the song. As for how it was written in the first place, we learned that Francis Scott Key went out to a British ship as a negotiator. When he was finished he could not go ashore because of the tide. He could do nothing but watch as the British fleet attacked the unnamed American fort. There was no mention about any conversations he had on the ship or going to the fort the following morning. We just learned that when he saw the flag still flying the next morning he was inspired to write a poem which was later put to music the Star Spangled Banner. This next part is something I read in an issue of Reminisce magazine about 25 or 30 years ago. The Star Spangled Banner only became the national anthem of the United States of America in the early part of the 20th century. At the time it was only one out of four or five different songs that were being considered. The majority of the adults at the time were against it as they saw it as a song that glorified war. There were conflicts going on in Europe or Asia at the time which the American people wanted the American government to stay out of. As for the other songs on the list the adults could not agree as to which song should be the national anthem. Since this was not something to elect a political candidate or issues school children, many of them attending one room schoolhouses throughout the country were allowed to vote. The majority of the school children voted for the Star Spangled Banner and as it got more votes than any other song it was made our national anthem.
