Jordan said that, one-on-one, he would refer to the person he's speaking with by the pronouns they want to be referred to as, as long as they are respectful. The only thing he opposed was the legislation behind it. It's purely a free speech issue for him. Also, he was railed against very hard by the radical activists, so he really had no choice but to take a hard-line stance on the issue. He's actually a very sensitive guy, and wants everybody to like him, and vice versa. You'll see a lot more of this in his longer-form content on his UA-cam, where he interviews people for hours of all walks. He's spoken before that it bothers him that he has to be on the defensive so much, and would rather just have a respectful conversation. This is mainly why he doesn't do as many (if any) mainstream media spots anymore, and just sticks to his UA-cam/Daily Wire content and speaking events. When you gotta be on the defensive the whole time, or the other person has a wall up, it just feels like running in quicksand. I've been in that situation before myself, having debates with friends and relatives over the years, and it's not a good feeling. You eventually just have to give up and find people who actually WANT to have a productive conversation.

It wasn't purely about free speech. It was both that (legally compelled speech) and the use of made-up pronouns like uh... idk, xi/xim or whatever, because those are entirely based in gender ideology and completely unrelated to biology, science or psychology. I could just decide to call myself glorp gender and insist on people referring to me by glar/glum pronouns. It's 100% made up so it's one thing to force people to use female pronouns about someone who is/presents as a man, which is bad enough but it's even worse to force people to use grammatical terms entirely made up by some random stranger at the risk of a fine or even jail if you refuse (bill C16).

I am now laughing as you started talking about his use of the language ... his 'big words". He doesn't mean it! He is not using those words to confuse or even show off. His intelligence, his research, his reading, etc causes him to use more of the language than most of us do. The reason I know this is because I have a husband like that! He doesn't mean to but sometimes he "talks over my head"; I remind him and he, of course, can then speak to me. There is no arrogance. And over the years it has actually caused my vocabulary to be stretched ... I have even been accused of using "big words" as has our little granddaughter - because she lived with us. So if you are around that level of vocabulary, it does "rub off" on you. Don't hate him because he is smart 😆 😏

    • @TheMemoriesOfNobody

English is not my native language but I like it and since I now live in UK I speak it every day. I could never understand people saying either online or in real life that such and such are "big words", I could never understand why are they offended or annoyed by the person. To me those words portray better or more suitable meaning when used in the sentence or a phrase. I completely agree most people don't use those words to look smart or out of arrogance, it is just because they have a rich vocabulary. I find the problem is with people who don't want to learn more about the language they speak, especially if English is the main language in the country. Instead of blaming others for your shortcomings why not just get better, that is what I think and try to do every day.

Jordan Peterson is to debate what mixed martial arts are to fighting. He is a mixed language arts master. He uses both offense and defense. Both are built on a steady Rick solid foundation of knowledge and research. No matter what his opponent uses as an offense Jordan counters with facts and evidence. That is what they title "offensive". Their beliefs structure is based on feelings and ideology. His is not. They will use racism, sexism, relativism, transgenderism, Marxism and every other ism there is to attack him. He is EXTREMELY careful and purposeful with the words he uses. Sometimes you do need a thesaurus to really get how exact he is choosing his words. He could use another word but it wouldn't convey EXACTLY what he means. You are very intelligent in picking up on that. Most of the people he debates are not. They're playing checkers and he is playing chess. They are offended because they lack the intellect to truly debate him.

What JP was saying @4:40 was that what gave women their freedom, by far, were technological breakthroughs such as sanitary napkins and birth control basically, and he said restrooms... Before that you had a rag between (women) their legs with nothing to hold anything back. I imagine that was very constricting and a pain to deal with. I was talking with my daughter today about worst case scenarios and how, without electricity and water, etc how hard life would be. Imagining all the conveniences we wouldn't have and pads were one things and she (14yo) was like omg. The thought of dealing with that never crossed her mind. Jordan Peterson is perhaps one of the brightest minds of our century. I respected him from the moment he stepped onto the scene. The government should not have the right to force compelled speech from people. There's a difference between being polite with one another. And a government body saying You must address somebody as this or else you will be punished. What were Royals known for doing if you did not address them properly oh yeah off with your head. What does the lgbtq community if they don't get called what they want to be called. They rally the troops and do everything they can to destroy you. A tyrant is a tyrant. Christianity claimed everything they were doing was from the goodness of their heart and God's Divine will. And they subjugated the planet by the point of the sword. You're supposed moral superiority does not give you the right to force people to adhere to your beliefs. In truth the lgbtq community has adopted the behaviors they claim to despise.

Jordan says, in numerous interviews, that he has NEVER not called a trans person the pronoun they wish. It was NEVER about trans issues but simply about compelled speech. We have plenty of restrictions around free speech, not racially insulting people, not yelling FIRE in a crowed theatre, but NEVER has there been compelled speech in common law. Against logic, your reason, your understanding, you HAVE to call someone something you know is incorrect - under force of LAW! It could have been about any group, just happened to be Trans.

He always stops to think out his answers precisely & is a clinical psychologist and former professor. His whole stand was refusing to be legally compelled to call anyone by pronouns. 12 rules for life is a good read. He did refer to students as they wanted but, refused to be forced to do so. He is a man who took a stand on his absolutely correct position. He also cries a lot because he has thought all of this out & reality is heartbreaking 💔 😢.
More importantly. A quote from my older brother "being offended is a choice! " George Carlin warned everyone about this year's ago in a comedy special PC language is the beginning of the end. If you control language, you control thought. Here's my quote. Addressing your point (and with the video paused here to reply, I don't yet know if this comes up again and is explained).
It is my understanding that Jordan has said in the past that, when asked to address someone some way or another, he generally does. But the issue comes up like this:
If you have a male to female student in class, and they ask him "please refer to me as you would to any other woman," that is a request, and one he can (and to my understanding, does) honor.
But when the government says "You must refer to male to female students as female, and if you do not do so, you could face consequences at work, lose your ability to practice in your profession, face fine, or even jail time" (that sounds excessive, but keep in mind, they passed a LAW requiring this, so one would assume legal consequences would flow from failing to adhere to it), you are being forced to speak in a certain way. You are no longer being charitable to students and agreeing with their request to address them a certain way, but are in fact forced to, under penalty for not doing so.
And that is also a slippery slope, because compelling speech by law not only removes the freedom of speech, but also sets precedent for other mandatory speech.
As an extreme (as in, taking the example to the limit, this would likely never happen.... but if the law he opposes remains unchallenged, this is hypothetically also possible), imagine if the law forcing him to say certain things required him to refer to all of his students, not by name, but by racial characteristic, or religious characteristic. Let's say a law forced him to call his Jewish students "Jew" instead of their name, whenever addressing them.
I think we all understand why that is not only ugly and immoral, but forcing him to use that language is also ugly and immoral. That we'd stand up, then, and say "it is not right that teachers are required, by law, to call Jewish students "Jew" in lieu of their name."
Even if the speech the law requires is an affirmation to students, and not derogatory to them, it is still something he MUST say, or else. And laws forcing such behavior on people are inherently unjust, authoritarian, and dangerous.
So, his stand is not about not addressing students as they ask, but against being forced to use words.
That is, of course, using just standard male/female pronouns. His view on "non-binary" pronouns is different. If a student asks for him to use "xi/xir" pronouns, he'll likely say no, because he sees that as ridiculous. And a law mandating that he must do so is even more offensive, then.

He’s a brilliant person… and part of what he’s saying about the pronouns is that the people who are asking to use the terms any way they want, are actually changing the definitions of these words! If words can’t have consistent meanings then those lose ALL meaning…

The interviewer means "alternative" pronouns, not "alternate".
Peterson uses college-level vocabulary in his lectures because that's the population he normally speaks to; and the advanced concepts he's talking about require advanced words to express them. I believe his books are easier to follow.

Asia hit on it. First, being offended is a choice. And there's an entire cottage industry out there that thrives on being offended. It's become, especially among the current college-aged generation, a race to who can claim the most offense. The people who push this impossible non-offensive speech know it's impossible, and their goal is to silence everyone. Except themselves. That kind of talk is the first tenet of authoritarianism; you can't speak, only I can speak. Understand that anyone telling you to curb your speech so as not to offend, is trying to shut you up entirely.

Three things primarily affected the economic liberation of women: the invention of the bicycle, the industrial Revolution, and war. All of these things provided women with mobility and employment opportunities that had previously been unavailable to them. With increased mobility and financial independence, women became much less dependent upon men for their survival and consequently gave them increased political power and influence. That’s when the Suffragist movement gained traction and women got the vote. The 19th Amendment.

I think a few things were misunderstood. One he was very angry with these questions because that’s all people kept asking him after he continued to make his point. Also because people were trying to trap him too. Also the difference that he made clear between pronouns and racial slurs was how they are used I would say. It seems that with pronouns he is against it because he is forced to use it. However racial slurs is a choice. You shouldn’t use racial slurs but you have the option to do so. Canada was using law to force you to use pronouns or go to jail for not doing so.

It's not true to say that JP never backs down. He speaks his mind. On occasion, in public settings, he has expressed a view and have somebody offer an alternate. He WILL think about it and on rare occasions say something like "I never thought of that; I was wrong.".
JP has used requested speech from trans people but he refuses to be forced to use that speech.

The issue with 'respectfully' referring to someone by their preferred pronoun is that you then actually start to think and believe they are what they are pretending to be.
If a man asks you to call him her, and you keep calling him her, you then start to believe that him is a her. When in reality him is a him who wants to be called a her.
Playing into the delusion and narcissism of others is a slippery slope for society.

"I would do so because they respectfully requested it." Can we agree that transgenderism causes significant bodily and psychological harm to those that participate in it? If we are even in remote agreement, you can't call them something they are not, because now you are enabling their self-harm. If you truly love/care about someone, you will do what is best for them, even if they don't like it. If an attempted suicide was asking for you to give them something that would assist in their self harm, would you do it? No. Same rule applies here.

Can you see how they are censoring your freedom of speech? If you offend one person, you can't speak? Political correctness is for political people, not for everyone else . We are free to say what we believe, even if it doesn't agree with what you believe. The definition of tolerance is: the ability to understand and allow the beliefs of others, without compromising your own beliefs. Those who demand you agree with their beliefs are the worst offenders of true tolerance.

it's NOT about refusing to use the person's "pronouns"... he's saying, that government should not be allowed to dictate free speech... example, if he were to "miss-gender" a person, they could prosecute him... how are we supposed to know what each and every person's chosen pronouns are ?!?!?!... and whether or not you agree with that person or disagree or they simply ask you nicely to use a specific pronoun... you still should not have to by ANY law... that's NOT freedom of speech anymore... no different than a person's "nick"-name, I don't have to call them by that and... they don't have to answer me either... it's called FREEDOM...

I agree with him and I agree with Asia..(For instance,) According to the UCLA they did a study and said that there are about 1.6 million transgenders in the U.S. We have a total population as of 2020 of 329.5 million people living here if not more now. So we have to give up our first amendment rights to accommodate that 1%.?? We have to change the way we think for the few ??? Smh... I have no problem being kind and understanding to them. But don't get offended if I see or say something that you don't like. I will continue to be who I am and speak the language I've been taught. There is more at risk here for the majority. Don't let them take away our freedom of speech! The other thing that bothers me is the pushing on young people regarding this. I grew up in a small town but there was not one in my class of 505 that grew up trans. We had about 4 that are gay but not one transgender...What happened??? These kids are having it taught to them. The fact that people are being told not to celebrate boy or girl at revealing parties or put gender on birth certificates and teachers can't use Boy or girl or he or she??? Sad world we live in. So glad and thankful to my Lord and savior that I was born in a better time and my eyes are wide open to the hypocrisy of this world. Even Jennifer Lopez introduced her daughter as "They" ???? So ridiculous and sad!! God help us 🙏🙏🙏
