I can totally relate to the working in phases with creative hobbies. I've been in a journaling phase lately which means I've not found time for painting, but I know I'll get back to that at some point! You can use the poscas justfor mark making. Pluses, stars, dots, small lines...

Poscas are better for journaling because they dry matt so you can write it colour over them. I use the Ivory & Beige 8k chisels for what you were doing and as bases in my sketchbook, and they’re fantastic.

My fav part of poscas are for highlights. I can never fill out a full spread with them because of streakiness

It's all practice, I promise! I've not taken any courses. Try copying other writing that you like to get a feel for how to move the brush pen :)
