Yeah, he got the option and ATC had a hissy when he took it. It’s not like he stopped the plane to say why he needed more length, he was moving off.

That’s on the controller, for sure. Pilot did the right thing not rushing for ATC. United hustled in Houston for ATC a couple of weeks ago and wound up in the dirt.

3 seconds too slow I guess. A little more spacing is required, this isn't worth it. One go around causes way more problems.

Amazing, the controlling did nothing about close spacing, said nothing about wanting a fast exit, gives an option for two different exits, then makes a rushed demand at the last second, and finally blames the pilot for his mistakes and poor communication. Hey Buddy, landing an airplane is not like playing with hot wheels or toy planes where you can rush around however you want.

    • @GWNorth-db8vn

That's SOP at JFK. Four miles spacing. Their minimum is 3,5. They clear everyone to land as soon as they get on the localizer. If they wait until the runway's clear, they're distracting the pilot and making him respond just as he's about to reach the threshold.
When they're really busy, they land and take them off in pairs on parallel runways.

This type of communication should not be done on the radio. Both pilots and controllers are professionals. A phone conversation would be more appropriate. The conversation sound's more like a father repremanding his young child. Controllers must be experts at adapting to any situation. I always had a slight feeling of unhappiness when I had to send a bird around. Not because it caused extra work but because of the inconvenience placed on the passengers. Adapt, nothing is perfect.

210 knots is about 240 mph = 4 miles a minute and 1.7 miles from the runway. So based on my math the plane is about 25 seconds from landing and the departing plane is just starting take-off (54 knots). It seems like “tight” would be accurate.
