Wall Mounted Coat Rack and Shelf - Plywood and Steam Bending

  • In this video I make a new coat rack and shelf for my back entrance way. This should help to keep things organized as the hooks I had originally put in are now overflowing!
    I used some maple plywood I had leftover from another project and used solid maple to make edge banding. For the shelf supports I had to steam bend the edge banding so that it would confirm to the shape of the supports. This was my first time steam bending, and it was a lot of fun.
    I also used dowels to strengthen the joints and I used my Milescraft doweling jig kit to help get everything aligned.
    I hope you enjoy!

    Hello, my friend Alexander.
    In this video, the captions button was disabled. I think you forgot to activate the captions button.
    Your steam bending technique was very interesting. I watched with great curiosity.
    The polish color also showed very well. Your coat and raf project was very nice. Decorative. And masterfully. You deserve beer again and again.

    4:25 Now that has got to be a great tip. Manual rise and fall. I made a steam bender from PVC two years ago, but it started to melt. I was bending 1 x 2 and bigger. I then made one from wood, and had reasonable success and I made the slips to hold in the glass in the round windows. Steeped them in water for a half day before steaming. Mahogany does not really like to be bent. I think oak is one of the best. Love the plugs being proud of the shelf. Stay safe

    • @TheGrantAlexander
      @TheGrantAlexander  4 роки тому +1

      Thanks Pascal, the manual rise and fall is what makes it a real poor man's spindle sander. Good to know about the PVC melting I'll make sure to take that into consideration for the next iteration of the steam generator. I'm planning on building toboggan for my son for next winter and I already bought the Ash wood I'm going to use. The plugs are proud so that i can remove the sheriff if I ever want to paint the wall, but it's also a nice design feature ☺️ Thanks for watching 👍🍻

      @@TheGrantAlexander Thats all part of the craft, lol. I've just edge banded for the first time [water damaged MDF bathroom cupboard doors] with a good 1" of hardwood. Boy what a difference it makes! I think you'll be putting more hooks on, as time goes by...

    • @TheGrantAlexander
      @TheGrantAlexander  4 роки тому

      It is amazing what a tiny bit of hardwood can do! If I had more space i would have put more hooks 🤣🤣 but this is the back entrance to my house and we don't use it that often, so 4 hooks should be ok 😁

    That video was a blast to watch, Grant...You pulled out all of the stops! I liked your steam generator...good job with your first steam bending project...Now, we just have to get you using a router and flush trim bit to trim it up...so much easier! :-)
