It's pretty easy to feed him XP safely with the Hatchet, too. You can get him promoted by the start of Chapter 6 without slowing down your gameplay. Chapter 5 if you don't mind slowing things down a little. I think he should be C rank because he can promote to Pirate and water-walking is pretty useful. Lets you speed up Chapter 7, also very handy on Ch9!Eirika and Ch10!Ephraim.
Just finished for the first time a few days ago and took Ephraim route. Currently doing Seth solo to test that theory. I’m at chapter 12 and it’s not even close. Throw 95% of the Exp and your buff items at Seth and this games an absolute breeze.
I'd say the easiest playthrough is 90% Seth Solo, featuring Myrrh and maybe like, Saleh or someone else to help Myrrh level for a map or two. Or just feed her some delicious eggs. Seth is strong, but dracozombies are no joke, and while Fomortiis IS a joke, he's a very chunky one that can be hard to solo unless Myrrh sneezes on him for like 150+ damage.

Honestly what they should of do is have Marisa comes as a lv1 swordmaster, this makes it difficult to recruit without casualty but rewarding especially with hard mode bonus.
And fits her reputation. And makes her not redundant by being literally worse than Joshua in every single way possible, including joining several chapters later than him.
@@LoudWaffle FE8 has so few prepromotes; Innes, Dozla, Saleh, Duessel, Syrene. Syrene comes so late she's useless. Innes is a decent filler unit that can plink fliers and use the S-rank bow without much investment. Duessel and Saleh are the shit. Dozla is pretty bad. I'm not counting Seth because Seth is an M1A1 Abrams disguised as a prepromoted Paladin and I'm not counting Rennac because his combat sucks, he's more of a utility unit. I'd be tempted to turn Marisa into a Sedgar/Wolf type character; prepromote with blech bases but absolutely cracked growths.

Regardin Neimi, theres this very fun run on UA-cam about beating FE8 without taking damage. In that run Neimi is the key due to her absurd dodge (with right investment and supports). This makes me think her role is to be dodge tank. This i guess proves dodge tanks arent very realiable since she often lands on bottom of tier lists lol.
There are a lot of ways to beat fe8 without taking damage, and Neimi is certainly not the best way. Dogdge tanks can be pretty darn good, but neimi sucks right up until the moment you promote her into a mounted unit, and even then is outclassed by half the cast.
The problem with dodgetanks is that they're great until they suddenly aren't. They COULD dodge for the entire map, or they could die in two hits, and the truth is often somewhere between. Also Neimi has more problems than this, namely being unable to reliably counter in the game where swarms of zombies with theoretical stats need to be dealt with quickly. Neimi can kill 1, when even like Garcia could kill 10
Like the list but I feel that L'arachel was done a bit dirty here. I would be hard pressed to put ANY staff user in F tier, especially a mounted one. Yes her availability is the worst of all healers, but having extra movement on a healer is just super useful. Is she better than a bishop? Absolutely not, but she does have value as a highly mobile staff bot
In a harder game, I could absolutely see her being useful, but there's a ton of factors that just ultimately make her kinda pointless as a unit. . You generally don't need 2 healers in SS since the game is pretty easy. . By the time you recruit her, someone like Artur or Lute will probably either be promoted or very close to promotion, meaning she's competing for a deployment slot with someone who can heal AND participate in combat. . She's Level 3, regardless of the route, meaning she's going to take around 60-70 heals before she can do anything other than heal, at which point the game will probably be over. . Troubadour also got nerfed from FE7 to FE8 and has one less movement, meaning that the difference in movement between L'Arachel and someone like Moulder is literally just one point of move, which will be completely equalized by the time Moulder promotes, which will also probably be before L'Arachel joins. Maybe F Tier is a little harsh but she probably wouldn't be higher than E Tier IMO. She just has too many downsides and doesn't really belong. I will say that her bases and growths are actually pretty good for a healer, so if you're doing postgame stuff, she's probably pretty good there. Edit: OH GOD HER STARTING STAFF RANK IS D, I THOUGHT IT WAS C RANK. SHE'S EVEN WORSE THAN I THOUGHT.
I agree your main staff user doesn’t really have to have amazing stats. Everytime I get to rennac ch I always just sub in l’arachel for molder and she’s pretty much just doing what I expect mounded to so i imagine if you want to invest in her even though you get her late it’s not that hard for her to be useful.

She has purple hair in SS, gets a more pink tone in FEH but I still maintain it's more purple, and in the FEH Spring Artwork, that's when she was depicted as pink.
Actually, pink is a very poorly defined color. All three of them def have purple hair, which may or may not mean they have pink hair, since more than half of the colors that get called pink are actually purple.

I'm finishing a run where my Eirika promoted at level 20 with 17 strength and no energy rings. I think the first str point she missed was at level 10. I couldn't believe my eyes, she just didn't stop. And Ephraim was still stronger lol
Personally, I Love Gilliam. He looks cool and has always treated me right.have had several "blessed" Gilliam playthroughs. But I understand why people rate him (and other Armor Knights) so low on their tierlists.
I like the list. FE8 is one of favourite games of all time and I played it so many times. Neimi and Ross will always be a staple of my team, no matter how bad they seem to be I will go out of my way to train them anyways
The funniest thing about Ephraim vs Eirika is that not only Ephraim has better bases, growths and weapons than Eirika, EVEN HIS PROMOTION BONUSES ARE BETTER
I'm so glad you mentioned you weren't considering any form of grinding whatsoever at the beginning. I feel like SS was built around the idea of being able to grind and experiment. So many units people consider "bad" I've ALWAYS felt were my best units in all my playthroughs. Primarily due to the fact that I leaned into the grind. I usually do in games that give me the ability to.
Respectfully I have grinded and used the tower/ruins because the game is short. However, I’ve never see. Garcia be better than Ross. Ever. I exp dump into the best performers and Ross, Amelia, Ewan- definitely TOP tier
One time, I went full meme tier and grinded Emilia to be a General with S rank swords. Never doing that again and so not worth it, but it was at least funny.
Fun fact: base Gilliam rescuing anyone has 1 Speed, which is good enough to get doubled by boats in chapter 10 ephraim route. Great cursed way to get a secret book. Also “hot take” (not really): Fly utility Vanessa > actually trying to fight anything with her.
Honestly, I'm so confused by your rejection of the three trainees. They are all god tier in all the runs I've ever done. admittedly, I will concede Amelia is the worst of the three, and I would still rate her B. But even despite the fact that her def is garbage, she can rock a knight/general class amazingly with her speed granting her double hits. And as for Ross, id place him A for a hero/ S for a Berserker. And Ewan is hands down the best unit in the game. SSS rank. Truthfully, I like almost all the characters in this game, and I don't think I would have rated any one of them as F Rank. However, to compare to your tier list, if I had to rank 4 units in F class it would be L'arachel, Saleh, Syrene, Rennac. Now this is why I believe our opinions are so different. If i had to wager a guess, I'd say that your tier list is based off of Speed runs. I do not care to rush through the game, I am more of a grinder, and so it makes sense why you're not willing to invest the time into the trainees. So, I leave that thought to you, but I still think Ross is gotten early enough in the story that you should at least be ranking him in A rank. PS, absolutely no hate on Seth, but as I like to grind for XP, I feel like the pre-promoted units are my lowest ranked units. Though I might be biased because I've always really disliked Marcus in FE7 and as they are similarly obtained early, they have similar roles, and I just can't get past my distaste for him.

I do think arthur and lute are just a little underrated I think they are so crucial as usually your only magic users for most of the game. Cavs rule the early game, fliers are the gods of late game but they are so good in the midgame. They're usually to fast to ever get doubled so they can always take a hit. Lute especially as a mage knight is a great mobile healer and you get excaliber pretty early to oneshot fast enemies. They also have a very useful support with each other who arthur especially benefits a lot from.

Enjoyed the video. My only nitpick is that you seem to be somewhat underrating pure combat units like Gerik and Ephraim. The best utility is death, and units that can reliably kill everything and anything make any other aspect of the game more or less moot IMO.
This is Sacred Stones. The only thing holding Neimi back from killing everything is that she needs to promote first. Combat utility is such a given in this game that pointing out a character has it is up there with pointing out their wacky hair in a fire emblem game, or suggesting that perhaps the king of the invading nation MIGHT be a little possessed or enchanted. Beguiled, perhaps. Franz can kill everything in the game just fine. The fact that his bars are perhaps slightly smaller in some areas is mostly just trivia, because the result is still everything is dead. Whether a unit reaches -2 HP or -16 isn't important. There's like, 3 actually threatening enemies in the game; Morva, and the two Dracozombies in the last map. Those are like, the ONLY things in the entire game that present something in the vein of a stat check... and you have like a dozen ways to deal seven gorillion damage to them, so even that barely matters so long as you have one or two units with an S rank by literally the last two maps of the game, which can be fliers and cavs just as well as anyone else. This is a valid point for many other FE games, just, kinda not Sacred Stones. Nothing in Sacred Stones actually asks for strong combat units, the combat of utility units is just fine.
The problem with pirce is that it is level based, so, 1% chance when you promote. Generelly I'd say crit boost is better as you probably do more damage with a crit than with pirce, but it is fun to have it, and the class is good.
Colm is a weird unit in my experience. Hes not good mechanically but every time i play he dodges like crazy and ends up over leveled. Ironically in most of the situations id use gilliam for kill set ups and blocking id use him.
Hey Bloogoose! Just so you know, you can bypass Rennac's 10 000 Gold paid recruitment by talking to him with L'arachel instead of either lord. Now I know deploying L'arachel isn't much better but heh, at least if you don't want to pay, you don't have to
The only argument I can make for Marisa being good is if you want a sword-locked in your roster, and you just lost Joshua. Other than that, no other reason to use her aside from being cute and cool.
Using Joshua tho is already a bad idea because he's pretty much a trained Erika you don't have to take, or a slightly stronger colm with no theif utility that never gets better from promotion, that's still a worse sword unit in combat than Garcia with promo or base Gerik. He's like bizzarro Neimi, where she sucks at base but gets significant boons involving everything other than her start and improves like crazy to give larger returns on what's invested to her at the minimum consequence.
@@KieraQ0323 and a mount, 2 range, better promo gains, an exclusive promo item with no competition. Joshua is a meme centered around the idea that you need a strong sword locked foot soldier. Anything Joshua can do well is better invested in the theif or Erika, and at best he has a minor role on a handleful of maps. Use him if you like him, but he's one of the worst units in terms of flexibility and utility that's pretty middling as a jobber.
One time, i had a Busted Great Knight Gilliam that could 1 round anything with most axes. The Garm is a good weapon to put on him if you do put exp on him early and train him in mostly axes. In that one playthrough he was S tier, but in most others he like C or D tier, I kinda feel like u did gilliam slightly dirty there.
The gap between Artur and Lute should be at least a full tier since he gets c staves on promotion and stuff like him joining at the start of the map as well as being 1 level higher with better bases is kind of a big deal Also I’m not defending Neimi since the Orion’s bolt gets sold anyway but you can easily get it by just having Seth make a bee line to the boss
There’s also a strat that just involves picking up Joshua with Vanessa and flying him over to the villagers by going along the bottom of the map - meanwhile the rest of your units fight in the middle like usual. Once he gets dropped off in the mountains he really is able to handle the spiders easily because of the huge dodge bonus.
Ephraim is easily S tier in every playthrough I've done, and Amelia, Ewan, Ross, Colm and Neimi are all really underrated here. Colm and Neima support really quick and really help with their combat ability, Ross has always been better than Garcia for me, and Ewan has often been untouchable for me even as a sage. Love the video but have to disagree with a number of things. And Joshua to me is like a better version of Guy in FE7, with way more strength and durability.
Swordlocked units in SS offset their weapon class with how easy it is to get a few rune blades from the tower to get 1-2 range. But for people who strictly never touch the tower, I see how annoying it is that swords dont gave 1-2 range, (seriously, need to make a hack with 1-2 dagger and knives for swords and make them common like javelins and handaxes).
Its so weird that Amelia is by far my most favourite unit despite her being bad, and I think the only reason why I loved her was because i got insanely lucky on her speed growth and seeing a general double somewhat consistently was mindblowing to me
Amelia is not bad at all, just if you are lazy with training, once you manage to raise her to level 10 and promote her to the category of your choice, she tends to rival or be better than other equal units even if she is at level 1
ross suck my guy you can literally spoonfeed him everything and garcia will still probably be better every straight play through unless you are using the tower to farm or smth
Lute should be at the end of B Tier. She's one of only 2 characters in the tier who require a lot of babying. Tana is the other, but she's a valuable high LCK flier, whereas Lute can easily be replaced by Saleh, who requires no investment to get going. Natasha should also be in C Tier by virtue of her role. While Moulder is better, Natasha joins early enough where you could make her your main healer without significantly holding yourself back. An early game healer is definitely in a league above a trainee, a barely playable character and a late game lockpicker. If a replaceable lockpicker and lackluster attacker like Colm is in C, then a secondary character who can play a more important role ought to be in this tier as well.
I mean, I understand why people would be biased towards Marisa for being a waifu, when she came out in FEH people gave her premium food... It was crazy But She is nowhere as good as Joshua even in FEH where he landed with a Legendary weapon of his own not to mention Audhulma is tailored for Joshua in FE8, and furthermore, there's people babysitting Marisa and promote her to assassin, Colm with his fast supports with Neimi Fill that role more than decently and even Joshua Procs Silence more often if you make him an Assassin not to mention he can actually kill things with decent a str growth , but Marisa? Come on dude, relying on silencer Procs Even for a griding game she's bad as an assassin in Lagdou's Ruins
Ok im definitely bias but i love Garcia as a unit, is stats arealright and lvling is not too bad and im weird cause i love the warrior class and i always get him to 12 to 15 lvl range when i get gerik i use the hero crest on Garcia and make him a monster warrior that kinda kills most of the bosses for me. Im weird but i love my man Garcia gang!
@AlexaRobin21 he doesn't need Javelins. Sigurd doesn't even care about weapon triangles. For him, lances are a suggestion. Nothing, but Arvis is killing him, and he has all the tools to solo till the bbq
Tana's 10% Strength growth advantage over Vanessa is really not a big deal. That's an average of 1 extra point of Strength every 10 levels, and since this list is no-grinding Tana is getting maybe 20 levels tops. Of course, you can use 2 fliers - hell, you should, fliers are great - but there's only 2 Elysian whips and Cormag is the better candidate for the second one. Even on Eirika route, Cormag is better than Tana; he comes a bit later but requires zero investment to kick everyone's ass. Just promote him to Wyvern Knight and boom, Seth on a wyvern.
I surprisingly agree with most of these placements. L'aRachel is perhaps the only character I wouldn't have tierd as you did. Not great of course, but staff utility is always useful. Unfortunately, I think it's largely a romanticized opinion that you don't need staves in Sacred Stones, or don't need as many. Hard mode FE8 will still damage even Seth. Granted, it's obviously not the hardest game in the series, of course. But staves are still good. I do agree that it is heavily annoying that her level is bad, and that she joins so late being an important member of the game's story roster.
Actually, racing to the A-rank stave before you obtain the Warp stave is considered to be very important in Sacred Stones tiering. That's why most tier lists put Moulder on par with Saleh.
@@AlexaRobin21 Oh I completely agree. I forgot to mention warp but for a speed run or LTC, racing to warp with a unit is essential. Moulder is kind of the only viable option as you get him the earliest. Natasha can work as well.
franz really should be c tier at best, too many people say early cav instant a tier but he is just so mid, give him 2 levels at most if he doesnt proc speed twice in those 2 levels he will be dead weight from start to finish. youre better giving that xp to seth than to franz. not to mention you get forde kyle and ephraim who get an entire map with a ton of exp uncontested where franz hard contests vanessa for xp. use him as a body wall to chip for artur or lute and then drop him.
Ross is always getting shafted and put in lower tiers. Berserker Ross is pretty much a monster that hits hard, doubles, and is beefy. The contention always comes in because he's a trainee so "he's stealing xp". The reality is that if you sacrifice 1.5 maps he becomes a Pirate and is comparable to the rest of your squad (if not slightly better). The issue is the 1-1.5 maps. While I get that that "sounds" like a lot on paper, it's really not. His growths are so much higher than everyone else that he hits Lvl10 before you meet Arthur while anyone else put in the exact same position will raise up 2 levels at most. A level 7 Garcia isn't that much better than a level 5 Garcia. If you're using any other combination outside of Sole Seth (Vanessa + Franz + Moulder) the growth shared is even less impressive. Even an SS run isn't netting you much more than just having Seth kill the two bosses. My ultimate point is Ross is objectively better than Garcia. The idea that he's not useful until map 5 or 6 is just not true. Similarly, Garcia's growths are so slow you're better off feeding kills to pretty much any character anyway
I think the problem is more feeding him kills while keeping him alive. If Ross survives he’s a beast, but why bother when you can just kill him off and use Seth?
I definitely disagree with Amelia and Ewan. If you put a tiny bit of work in ewan and Amelia they will grow so incredible. My Amelia max capped three stats in her last class. Ewan as a just promoted 3rd class unit already has 13 defense as a mage. Wtf. At level 4 in his lastt class he maxed out his magic stat. And it kept on growing like this. I’m sorry. Both are very much S tier. Just because they don’t murder right when they start does not mean they are bad lmao.
A tiny bit of work is what you have to do for ross. You have to do a significant amount of work for amelia because she’s pathetically weak at base compared to the enemies. Ross can finish off enemies fine when you get him, but Amelia does like 2 damage to the weakest enemies in her recruitment chapter. (I use Amelia fairly often, mainly because I hate Forde.) Ewan just comes too late to be worth using. Sure, you could grind him up to be pretty darn good, but you could also just use a different spellcaster instead for a third the amount of work and the same results.

This is harsh 😅 I'm playing FE8 for the first time and I'm rolling with all 3 trainees rn. Going for Berserker, Paladin, and Summoner respectively. Then again, I'm playing on normal and I'm grinding them with the monster skirmishes and the tower. I realize it lessens the challenge but I like level up dopamine hits 🤷♂️😅
Dope! I talk about how weak the trainees are overall, but that doesn't mean they aren't super fun to use, and using the units that you like the most is ultimately the most important feature of Fire Emblem. I still do tons of FE runs where I play on lower difficulties and just mess around with a bunch of different units to experiment. I don't wanna sound condescending or anything, but don't interpret this video as me saying there's only one way to enjoy Fire Emblem, because I literally think the exact opposite. Artur is way better than Lute, not only does he get slayer he gets free C Rank staves, this means that most of the time he will be able to reach warp, with higher warp range than moulder, Artur is a great candidate for early promotion, his stats are fine enough to get him by until promotion, and once he promotes he becomes a really good utility unit and destroys any monster enemies with minimal effort, In comparison, mage knight lute will probably come later than Artur since early promotion can hurt her potential and also she starts doubling later and for all your troubles you get 1 extra mov and canto over Artur when he gets free kills on any monster and good staff utility, for much less effort, if you're playing eirika route lute is way more screwed because she will have to get a ton of exp to come even close to Saleh's stats by the time he joins, and he comes with C staff rank, which is the barrier rank so the rest of the grind will be way easier
Flier utility is not worth more than killing units. She needs help to do anything. You would have to assume that she is always going to have a unit she carries around that will get the kills and if that's the case can you really attribute the usefulness to vanessa or the unit she is carrying around. She's also the worst flier you get in the game (besides serena who's so bad she might as well not exist). Sure the others come later but their stats when you get them are worse than vanessa's at that given level. And there are way better uses for the energy rings in fe 8 for characters that only need a few more points in strength to hold their own vice vanessa who if you're extremely lucky might hold her own in a fight. Also how can you say why invest in Gilliam when he cannot kill things when the only way vanessa can kill things is if you invest in her. Don't get me wrong Gilliam is god awful he isn't worth investing in but vanessa is the same way.
Gilliam as a general is stupid ez node tbh. Especially if you give him the boots that increase his movement. He's my favorite unit to use. I honestly don't know why people think he's a bad unit.
Interesting, Forde is always my best cav. Kyle and Franz get RNG screwed on speed/strength respectively about half the time for me. I've never done a playthrough where Forde was bad. Also, Orson over Gilliam and Amelia is wild. Gilliam is trash, but he's available the whole game. Amelia is a free speedwing. Orson is around for one chapter and is just an exp black hole; he's basically a troll character. Definitely F tier.
Playing slower is way more "efficient" by every metric. Availability (with a very few exceptions) is the stupidest thing the fire emblem community has ever come up with.
By definition being "efficient" implies doing something well at a fast rate. Also how is availability stupid? If you aren't around for most of the game then you simply can't do as much as other characters.

@@LoudWaffle FE8 has so few prepromotes; Innes, Dozla, Saleh, Duessel, Syrene. Syrene comes so late she's useless. Innes is a decent filler unit that can plink fliers and use the S-rank bow without much investment. Duessel and Saleh are the shit. Dozla is pretty bad.
I'm not counting Seth because Seth is an M1A1 Abrams disguised as a prepromoted Paladin and I'm not counting Rennac because his combat sucks, he's more of a utility unit.
I'd be tempted to turn Marisa into a Sedgar/Wolf type character; prepromote with blech bases but absolutely cracked growths.

Regardin Neimi, theres this very fun run on UA-cam about beating FE8 without taking damage. In that run Neimi is the key due to her absurd dodge (with right investment and supports). This makes me think her role is to be dodge tank.
This i guess proves dodge tanks arent very realiable since she often lands on bottom of tier lists lol.
There are a lot of ways to beat fe8 without taking damage, and Neimi is certainly not the best way. Dogdge tanks can be pretty darn good, but neimi sucks right up until the moment you promote her into a mounted unit, and even then is outclassed by half the cast.
The problem with dodgetanks is that they're great until they suddenly aren't.
They COULD dodge for the entire map, or they could die in two hits, and the truth is often somewhere between.
Also Neimi has more problems than this, namely being unable to reliably counter in the game where swarms of zombies with theoretical stats need to be dealt with quickly. Neimi can kill 1, when even like Garcia could kill 10

Like the list but I feel that L'arachel was done a bit dirty here. I would be hard pressed to put ANY staff user in F tier, especially a mounted one. Yes her availability is the worst of all healers, but having extra movement on a healer is just super useful. Is she better than a bishop? Absolutely not, but she does have value as a highly mobile staff bot
In a harder game, I could absolutely see her being useful, but there's a ton of factors that just ultimately make her kinda pointless as a unit.
. You generally don't need 2 healers in SS since the game is pretty easy.
. By the time you recruit her, someone like Artur or Lute will probably either be promoted or very close to promotion, meaning she's competing for a deployment slot with someone who can heal AND participate in combat.
. She's Level 3, regardless of the route, meaning she's going to take around 60-70 heals before she can do anything other than heal, at which point the game will probably be over.
. Troubadour also got nerfed from FE7 to FE8 and has one less movement, meaning that the difference in movement between L'Arachel and someone like Moulder is literally just one point of move, which will be completely equalized by the time Moulder promotes, which will also probably be before L'Arachel joins.
Maybe F Tier is a little harsh but she probably wouldn't be higher than E Tier IMO. She just has too many downsides and doesn't really belong.
I will say that her bases and growths are actually pretty good for a healer, so if you're doing postgame stuff, she's probably pretty good there.

I agree your main staff user doesn’t really have to have amazing stats. Everytime I get to rennac ch I always just sub in l’arachel for molder and she’s pretty much just doing what I expect mounded to so i imagine if you want to invest in her even though you get her late it’s not that hard for her to be useful.

Actually, pink is a very poorly defined color. All three of them def have purple hair, which may or may not mean they have pink hair, since more than half of the colors that get called pink are actually purple.

I'm finishing a run where my Eirika promoted at level 20 with 17 strength and no energy rings. I think the first str point she missed was at level 10. I couldn't believe my eyes, she just didn't stop. And Ephraim was still stronger lol
Personally, I Love Gilliam. He looks cool and has always treated me right.have had several "blessed" Gilliam playthroughs.
But I understand why people rate him (and other Armor Knights) so low on their tierlists.

I'm so glad you mentioned you weren't considering any form of grinding whatsoever at the beginning. I feel like SS was built around the idea of being able to grind and experiment. So many units people consider "bad" I've ALWAYS felt were my best units in all my playthroughs. Primarily due to the fact that I leaned into the grind. I usually do in games that give me the ability to.

Honestly, I'm so confused by your rejection of the three trainees. They are all god tier in all the runs I've ever done. admittedly, I will concede Amelia is the worst of the three, and I would still rate her B. But even despite the fact that her def is garbage, she can rock a knight/general class amazingly with her speed granting her double hits. And as for Ross, id place him A for a hero/ S for a Berserker. And Ewan is hands down the best unit in the game. SSS rank.
Truthfully, I like almost all the characters in this game, and I don't think I would have rated any one of them as F Rank. However, to compare to your tier list, if I had to rank 4 units in F class it would be L'arachel, Saleh, Syrene, Rennac.
Now this is why I believe our opinions are so different. If i had to wager a guess, I'd say that your tier list is based off of Speed runs. I do not care to rush through the game, I am more of a grinder, and so it makes sense why you're not willing to invest the time into the trainees. So, I leave that thought to you, but I still think Ross is gotten early enough in the story that you should at least be ranking him in A rank.
PS, absolutely no hate on Seth, but as I like to grind for XP, I feel like the pre-promoted units are my lowest ranked units. Though I might be biased because I've always really disliked Marcus in FE7 and as they are similarly obtained early, they have similar roles, and I just can't get past my distaste for him.

I do think arthur and lute are just a little underrated I think they are so crucial as usually your only magic users for most of the game. Cavs rule the early game, fliers are the gods of late game but they are so good in the midgame. They're usually to fast to ever get doubled so they can always take a hit. Lute especially as a mage knight is a great mobile healer and you get excaliber pretty early to oneshot fast enemies. They also have a very useful support with each other who arthur especially benefits a lot from.

Enjoyed the video. My only nitpick is that you seem to be somewhat underrating pure combat units like Gerik and Ephraim. The best utility is death, and units that can reliably kill everything and anything make any other aspect of the game more or less moot IMO.

The only thing holding Neimi back from killing everything is that she needs to promote first.
Combat utility is such a given in this game that pointing out a character has it is up there with pointing out their wacky hair in a fire emblem game, or suggesting that perhaps the king of the invading nation MIGHT be a little possessed or enchanted. Beguiled, perhaps.
Franz can kill everything in the game just fine. The fact that his bars are perhaps slightly smaller in some areas is mostly just trivia, because the result is still everything is dead. Whether a unit reaches -2 HP or -16 isn't important.
There's like, 3 actually threatening enemies in the game; Morva, and the two Dracozombies in the last map. Those are like, the ONLY things in the entire game that present something in the vein of a stat check... and you have like a dozen ways to deal seven gorillion damage to them, so even that barely matters so long as you have one or two units with an S rank by literally the last two maps of the game, which can be fliers and cavs just as well as anyone else.
This is a valid point for many other FE games, just, kinda not Sacred Stones. Nothing in Sacred Stones actually asks for strong combat units, the combat of utility units is just fine.
The problem with pirce is that it is level based, so, 1% chance when you promote. Generelly I'd say crit boost is better as you probably do more damage with a crit than with pirce, but it is fun to have it, and the class is good.
A lot of people like using 2 healers and using Larachele! I do, she levels up pretty fast if you use her
Colm is a weird unit in my experience. Hes not good mechanically but every time i play he dodges like crazy and ends up over leveled. Ironically in most of the situations id use gilliam for kill set ups and blocking id use him.
He absolutely carried me through phantom ship in my first playthrough.

The only argument I can make for Marisa being good is if you want a sword-locked in your roster, and you just lost Joshua. Other than that, no other reason to use her aside from being cute and cool.
I feel like Colm, Rennac, or unpromoted Gerik would be better picks for that.
Using Joshua tho is already a bad idea because he's pretty much a trained Erika you don't have to take, or a slightly stronger colm with no theif utility that never gets better from promotion, that's still a worse sword unit in combat than Garcia with promo or base Gerik.
He's like bizzarro Neimi, where she sucks at base but gets significant boons involving everything other than her start and improves like crazy to give larger returns on what's invested to her at the minimum consequence.
Neimi basically has merc growths. They're not super good, just better than you would expect a crappy archer to have.

Joshua is a meme centered around the idea that you need a strong sword locked foot soldier. Anything Joshua can do well is better invested in the theif or Erika, and at best he has a minor role on a handleful of maps.
Use him if you like him, but he's one of the worst units in terms of flexibility and utility that's pretty middling as a jobber.
One time, i had a Busted Great Knight Gilliam that could 1 round anything with most axes. The Garm is a good weapon to put on him if you do put exp on him early and train him in mostly axes. In that one playthrough he was S tier, but in most others he like C or D tier, I kinda feel like u did gilliam slightly dirty there.
Syrene always dies in her join chapter for me lol. Good take on Syrene.
Also, Dozla is S tier in my heart.
The gap between Artur and Lute should be at least a full tier since he gets c staves on promotion and stuff like him joining at the start of the map as well as being 1 level higher with better bases is kind of a big deal
Also I’m not defending Neimi since the Orion’s bolt gets sold anyway but you can easily get it by just having Seth make a bee line to the boss
There’s also a strat that just involves picking up Joshua with Vanessa and flying him over to the villagers by going along the bottom of the map - meanwhile the rest of your units fight in the middle like usual. Once he gets dropped off in the mountains he really is able to handle the spiders easily because of the huge dodge bonus.
Staff rank is easy to train. Really easy to train, and really unimpactful because of how much time to have before you need to hit higher ranks.
Ephraim is easily S tier in every playthrough I've done, and Amelia, Ewan, Ross, Colm and Neimi are all really underrated here. Colm and Neima support really quick and really help with their combat ability, Ross has always been better than Garcia for me, and Ewan has often been untouchable for me even as a sage. Love the video but have to disagree with a number of things. And Joshua to me is like a better version of Guy in FE7, with way more strength and durability.
a case for ewan. make him go to the arena which gives you both cash and healer xp. E tier
Swordlocked units in SS offset their weapon class with how easy it is to get a few rune blades from the tower to get 1-2 range. But for people who strictly never touch the tower, I see how annoying it is that swords dont gave 1-2 range, (seriously, need to make a hack with 1-2 dagger and knives for swords and make them common like javelins and handaxes).
F is for fun tier yeah, L'Arachel is busted if she actually levels, but it obviously takes Valni maps to do so

Amelia is not bad at all, just if you are lazy with training, once you manage to raise her to level 10 and promote her to the category of your choice, she tends to rival or be better than other equal units even if she is at level 1

Lute should be at the end of B Tier. She's one of only 2 characters in the tier who require a lot of babying. Tana is the other, but she's a valuable high LCK flier, whereas Lute can easily be replaced by Saleh, who requires no investment to get going.
Natasha should also be in C Tier by virtue of her role. While Moulder is better, Natasha joins early enough where you could make her your main healer without significantly holding yourself back. An early game healer is definitely in a league above a trainee, a barely playable character and a late game lockpicker. If a replaceable lockpicker and lackluster attacker like Colm is in C, then a secondary character who can play a more important role ought to be in this tier as well.
Gatrie in Radiant Dawn is still the best armour knight in the series because of 60% speed growth

Tana's 10% Strength growth advantage over Vanessa is really not a big deal. That's an average of 1 extra point of Strength every 10 levels, and since this list is no-grinding Tana is getting maybe 20 levels tops.
Of course, you can use 2 fliers - hell, you should, fliers are great - but there's only 2 Elysian whips and Cormag is the better candidate for the second one. Even on Eirika route, Cormag is better than Tana; he comes a bit later but requires zero investment to kick everyone's ass. Just promote him to Wyvern Knight and boom, Seth on a wyvern.
Learning that i didnt know how to play FE and didn't know how to value units. I hate flyers and love generals and sword users.

I surprisingly agree with most of these placements. L'aRachel is perhaps the only character I wouldn't have tierd as you did. Not great of course, but staff utility is always useful. Unfortunately, I think it's largely a romanticized opinion that you don't need staves in Sacred Stones, or don't need as many. Hard mode FE8 will still damage even Seth. Granted, it's obviously not the hardest game in the series, of course. But staves are still good. I do agree that it is heavily annoying that her level is bad, and that she joins so late being an important member of the game's story roster.
Actually, racing to the A-rank stave before you obtain the Warp stave is considered to be very important in Sacred Stones tiering. That's why most tier lists put Moulder on par with Saleh.
@@AlexaRobin21 Oh I completely agree. I forgot to mention warp but for a speed run or LTC, racing to warp with a unit is essential. Moulder is kind of the only viable option as you get him the earliest. Natasha can work as well.
franz really should be c tier at best, too many people say early cav instant a tier but he is just so mid, give him 2 levels at most if he doesnt proc speed twice in those 2 levels he will be dead weight from start to finish. youre better giving that xp to seth than to franz. not to mention you get forde kyle and ephraim who get an entire map with a ton of exp uncontested where franz hard contests vanessa for xp. use him as a body wall to chip for artur or lute and then drop him.
Franz is the best investment jobber in the game, that easily becomes a 2nd Seth or better typically during mid game.

Ross is always getting shafted and put in lower tiers. Berserker Ross is pretty much a monster that hits hard, doubles, and is beefy. The contention always comes in because he's a trainee so "he's stealing xp". The reality is that if you sacrifice 1.5 maps he becomes a Pirate and is comparable to the rest of your squad (if not slightly better).
The issue is the 1-1.5 maps. While I get that that "sounds" like a lot on paper, it's really not. His growths are so much higher than everyone else that he hits Lvl10 before you meet Arthur while anyone else put in the exact same position will raise up 2 levels at most. A level 7 Garcia isn't that much better than a level 5 Garcia. If you're using any other combination outside of Sole Seth (Vanessa + Franz + Moulder) the growth shared is even less impressive. Even an SS run isn't netting you much more than just having Seth kill the two bosses.
My ultimate point is Ross is objectively better than Garcia. The idea that he's not useful until map 5 or 6 is just not true. Similarly, Garcia's growths are so slow you're better off feeding kills to pretty much any character anyway
I think the problem is more feeding him kills while keeping him alive. If Ross survives he’s a beast, but why bother when you can just kill him off and use Seth?
Its always hard to justify even bringing ross tho if you are trying to play the game efficiently

If you put a tiny bit of work in ewan and Amelia they will grow so incredible. My Amelia max capped three stats in her last class. Ewan as a just promoted 3rd class unit already has 13 defense as a mage. Wtf. At level 4 in his lastt class he maxed out his magic stat. And it kept on growing like this.
I’m sorry. Both are very much S tier. Just because they don’t murder right when they start does not mean they are bad lmao.
A tiny bit of work is what you have to do for ross. You have to do a significant amount of work for amelia because she’s pathetically weak at base compared to the enemies. Ross can finish off enemies fine when you get him, but Amelia does like 2 damage to the weakest enemies in her recruitment chapter.
(I use Amelia fairly often, mainly because I hate Forde.)
Ewan just comes too late to be worth using. Sure, you could grind him up to be pretty darn good, but you could also just use a different spellcaster instead for a third the amount of work and the same results.

This is harsh 😅 I'm playing FE8 for the first time and I'm rolling with all 3 trainees rn. Going for Berserker, Paladin, and Summoner respectively. Then again, I'm playing on normal and I'm grinding them with the monster skirmishes and the tower. I realize it lessens the challenge but I like level up dopamine hits 🤷♂️😅
Dope! I talk about how weak the trainees are overall, but that doesn't mean they aren't super fun to use, and using the units that you like the most is ultimately the most important feature of Fire Emblem.
I still do tons of FE runs where I play on lower difficulties and just mess around with a bunch of different units to experiment. I don't wanna sound condescending or anything, but don't interpret this video as me saying there's only one way to enjoy Fire Emblem, because I literally think the exact opposite.
There is absolutely no wrong way to play Fire Emblem.

Artur is way better than Lute, not only does he get slayer he gets free C Rank staves, this means that most of the time he will be able to reach warp, with higher warp range than moulder, Artur is a great candidate for early promotion, his stats are fine enough to get him by until promotion, and once he promotes he becomes a really good utility unit and destroys any monster enemies with minimal effort, In comparison, mage knight lute will probably come later than Artur since early promotion can hurt her potential and also she starts doubling later and for all your troubles you get 1 extra mov and canto over Artur when he gets free kills on any monster and good staff utility, for much less effort, if you're playing eirika route lute is way more screwed because she will have to get a ton of exp to come even close to Saleh's stats by the time he joins, and he comes with C staff rank, which is the barrier rank so the rest of the grind will be way easier
Flier utility is not worth more than killing units. She needs help to do anything. You would have to assume that she is always going to have a unit she carries around that will get the kills and if that's the case can you really attribute the usefulness to vanessa or the unit she is carrying around. She's also the worst flier you get in the game (besides serena who's so bad she might as well not exist). Sure the others come later but their stats when you get them are worse than vanessa's at that given level. And there are way better uses for the energy rings in fe 8 for characters that only need a few more points in strength to hold their own vice vanessa who if you're extremely lucky might hold her own in a fight. Also how can you say why invest in Gilliam when he cannot kill things when the only way vanessa can kill things is if you invest in her. Don't get me wrong Gilliam is god awful he isn't worth investing in but vanessa is the same way.
Vanessa promoted to wyvern is a phenomenal combat unit along with having the best mobility in the cast (along with other fliers)
Vanessa is one of the best combat units in the game
I never use starting promoted unit, imo it's a big loose of experience for other characters and have realy poor potential in comparaison with others

Gilliam as a general is stupid ez node tbh. Especially if you give him the boots that increase his movement. He's my favorite unit to use. I honestly don't know why people think he's a bad unit.
His speed is awful and he can only use lances when most enemies early game use axes.
Boots are better spent on a unit that has high move.
Seth, franz, gerrick, vanessa, cormag, ross, garcia all have better combat than gilliam
Interesting, Forde is always my best cav. Kyle and Franz get RNG screwed on speed/strength respectively about half the time for me. I've never done a playthrough where Forde was bad.
Also, Orson over Gilliam and Amelia is wild. Gilliam is trash, but he's available the whole game. Amelia is a free speedwing. Orson is around for one chapter and is just an exp black hole; he's basically a troll character. Definitely F tier.
That's valid, but I would rate everything that makes the gaiden chapter less of a slog higher then gilliam by default
Playing slower is way more "efficient" by every metric. Availability (with a very few exceptions) is the stupidest thing the fire emblem community has ever come up with.
Efficient means without waste(including wasting time).
Going slower in FE8 is less efficient by nearly every metric.
By definition being "efficient" implies doing something well at a fast rate. Also how is availability stupid? If you aren't around for most of the game then you simply can't do as much as other characters.
