This song was actually written for TLC and was about group member Chilli. Dallas Austin thought he moved on from there relationship but wasnt so thats why he ended up giving the song to Gwen
There is a reason why they didn't end up together. And it looks like it was for the best. Sometimes loving someone and losing them is better than staying and making the relationship sour.
The subtlety of this video is so strikingly powerful. The song alone does not tell the story the music video does. This 4 minute video is one of the most emotionally captivating pieces of media I’ve ever seen in my life. It is perfect. I tell myself I won’t cry, but as soon as 0:43, I can’t hold back the tears, every time
Doesn't matter bro. Many people have them and don't appreciate them anyway. Appreciating what you've got, whether it looks desirable from the outset or not, that's my highest ideal.
I went to a wedding reception for my ex and his new wife, and I was at Kohl's buying them a gift, and this song came on the store, and it proves that God is a DJ. It summed the moment up perfectly. Everyone was with who they were to be with. And we were all cool.
Isn’t it funny how things in life line up like that?! Happens to me quite a bit in the car listening to the radio. I always take those moments as signs.
The locations, the outfits, the lighting, the hairstyles, the body language... everything is so wonderfully executed in this music video. A true work of art. Oh, and the song still sounds so fresh even 16 years later!

It's so interesting how the text and the video complement and contradict each other at the same time. Just like real life... You understand you can't be with a person, you let go and move on officially, but a part of you will always love that person. Real love lasts forever, it changes and becomes a part of you. Just like the past is a part of who you are. Beautiful Gwen and a video full of emotion... perfect combination!
I agree. I think for some people there will always be apart of them that will love the one they let go. That's life. It's not perfect, but it is what it is sometimes. Still a great song and video from Ms. Stefani. One of her best.
This song makes me cry for the days this came out. 2004-2012 had some of the best yrs and now being older, 40, it means more now. Its like having a relationship with the past. You moved on, but nothing will compare.
I was there, in Como the day they shoot it. She was very kind to me, she signed a poster for me, but I was so excited that I didn't think to bring a pen. So she took care of asking for one from those present. Her calm surprised me, as I was used to seeing her wild in No Doubt live videos. I regret not being able to express how important that meeting was for me, as I was 14 years old at the time. Gwen with No Doubt was part of my childhood; I adored her and considered her my idol. Even though I was 6 years old in 1997, I listened to her music and always dreamed of meeting her one day. That day came true in 2005 in Como! I could have had lunch at one of the tables next to hers, but due to some obstacles, I had to leave. Today, at 33years old, I look back and you can't imagine how much I regret it.
Everything about this video has a strong hidden message. The ones that the singer could never tell. The accidental bump, the short glimpses, damn, even the sipping of the coffee..and who could forget that last shot where he's holding the other girl's hands and not hers (sigh). now leave me alone and let me cry in my room the whole day.
+bartzky10- Yes I think it's such a beautiful performance! I used to take the song literal, but then when I watched the video closely, you can see that it's not completely cool and it will always be difficult. But if you really love and respect the other two people, you will try to deal with it. At least that's how I feel. It's sad but it shows how when you try to deal with tough situations like this in a mature way, in stead of having things black and white in let's say your teenage years. (not you personally, I mean in general)
+bartzky10- Maybe the video portrayed that, but the whole song was about her relationship with her old band member, who she is still good friends with.
+bartzky10- i don't know if im wrong but at the end we see them running all together to the lake . and it looks like the same lake they've been hanging at for their whole relationship ( como lake in this clip ) . So to me the meaning is, they" moved on" but she still attached to the memories and still decided to stay close to their story by even buying a house near to what's linked to their past.
It's easy to idolize this kind of relationship..and it's beautiful to see..but it's not possible for everyone. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for both of you is truly forget one another and move on.
And i feel like that type of thinking is in itself idiolize. Why because people don't want to be truly happy and obsessed with pain. There is no reason why this type of relationship shouldnt work. Why it doesnt because people are inherently selfish and want their cake and eat it too or refuse tp move on. If you cant picture yourself in this type of relationship then you haven't truly moved on and are not confident enough to. Obvious exceptions are for abusive/toxic relationships but thats it.
@@tammynjruso1462 It doesnt have to be like that. If you have to forget then you're still hurting. The best way to move on is to embrace the hurt as you go along, never suppress them.
✨♥LYRICS ♥✨ [Verse 1] It's hard to remember how it felt before Now I've found the love of my life Passes, things get more comfortable Everything is going right [Chorus] And after all the obstacles It's good to see you now with someone else And it's such a miracle that you and me are still good friends After all that we've been through I know we're cool I know we're cool [Verse 2] And we used to think it was impossible Now you call me by my new last name Memories seem like so long ago Time always kills the pain [Chorus] Remember Harbor Boulevard? I had been wanting all of those dresses/skirts and tops since I was 13😂 now(27) I can finally wear them because they are in style and now I also know how to sew so I can make whatever I want.
It's crazy how you dated someone and remain good friends and yet you want the best for them but it kills you seeing them with someone other than you but yet again it's cool
This song really reminds me of my ex-boyfriend. We were dating when this song first got released back in 2005. We were only teens at the time. He really loved this song and so did I. He always talked about how cool it would be if we were still cool if we ever split up everytime we heard the song. I always told him not to talk such nonsense, naively thinking we would never break up. Anyways, we ended up parting ways. Didn't see or run into each other for years. We eventually ran into each other years later as adults and it wasn't awkward or anything. We hugged each other like we were old friends from childhood and chatted for a bit. But before we parted ways, he said to me, "We're cool, right?". I smiled and replied "Always". Thinking of the Gwen song we both adored as teens.
@@nancyfischer4875 I guess she got the best quality you could get, that’s why it looks so real. She said the record company paid for it “back when they used to give you money for videos” haha
Lina Morgana I’m not surprised it’s her! She directed The Killer’s “Mr. Brightside”, Sophie Ellis-Bexter’s “Murder On The Dance Floor” and Annie Lennox’s “Walking On Broken Glass” just to name a few of my favs
First time I heard this song was, what? 14-15 years ago? I remember thinking it's IMPOSSIBLE to have this kind of relationship. But then I chatted with my ex last night, we talked about his 2 wonderful daughters and I said "Hi" to his wife... then this song just pops into my mind again. And it actually feels good to experience this kind of relationship. Not everyone can. After all that we've been through, I know we're cool.
same for me as well. i reconnected after a few years with my ex who was probably the first man i ever really fell in love with, and we have remained friends ever since. theres never any jealousy over our respective relationships and its just really nice. to be friends with someone you had such a deep connection with, who you knew inside and out, and respect and admire now as you've gotten older. 10/10 would recommend being friends with your not-so-toxic exes.
Agreed. It looks like a heartbreaking acceptance, and the way he looks at her, he knows. What do you think he’s supposed to be feeling based on the actor’s facial expressions? Is it guilt?
The way the smile leaves her face when she sees them holding hands. MY GOD it’s so good, so subtle but so so much emotion. That feeling of being happy for someone you once loved, but still having that regret of “what if?”
I love the fact that Gwen was able to create two masterpieces inspired by her feelings for her former bandmate Tony Kanal. "Don't Speak", initially a love song, it changed when he broke up the relationship wanting to remain just friends, becoming the classic we all know, love and relate to. Years late Gwen wrote "Cool" for Tony, inspired by her longstanding friendship after their long teenage romantic relationship. In fact, Tony's then girlfriend and current wife, Erin Lokitz, portrays the "New Girlfriend" in this video. LOVE IT 💜
Not completely true. “Cool” was co-written by Dallas Austin (who also produced the song). Inspired by his relationship with TLC member Chilli. He was originally gonna give it to them, but after their breakup, they got another song instead. Gwen helped Dallas finish the lyrics because she connected with the song due to her relationship with Tony from No Doubt.
@@aftertaste05 That's very interesting! Thank you. My knowledge was that Dallas Austin composed the music and after his own break-up he gave another song to TLC and this to Gwen, and that she had wrote the lyrics. But in fact the backstory of how it become the song we know it's very interesting and so connected with romantic relationships.
Seriously I feel like this could have been a recent video. The filming and wardrobe are great but I'm over Gwens Snookie poof, it worked for the punky rockabilly look but now she just looks so much better in every other style imo. Funny how that became her signature.
This song is a classic. Captured in essence like a painting about those people destined to meet but not supposed to be together. Yet, held in unspoken fond memories to be opened up on those sleepless nights. Reminiscing upon a time when one would discover so much meaning and have butterflies even when hearing that person call their name.
This song makes me feel nostalgic and even shed a few tears, it brings back many memories of my adolescence with loves from the past, friends who are no longer here, and all those experiences that have made us what we are now, what beautiful times. Thank you Gwen Stefani for this gem.
nyguy18 Why are you being so aggressive? In my opinion, this song is one of the greatest pop songs in history. Apparently so, in your opinion, Happy is one of the greatest. Can't others have different opinions to you?
Fine. You can have your opinion. It is the comments section to this video, after all. From my perspective I just felt like I was in the twilight zone with this opinion and people agreeing with it. It's a B level song in my opinion and In my opinion this isn't even one of Gwen's best songs.
@@Somenoobdoodyes this song was about them and Tony Kanal. Her ex from No Doubt band. I was so invested in their relationship because her pain from Tony made her create great masterpieces
This could literally be a film. They really nailed the theme, the story, acting, costumes, everything. And sans the video, the song is still so good and stands on its own. Can’t get enough
I wish there were more songs with themes about love like this. About moving on and still having love and respect for the other even afterwards. I think it's beautiful when people are able to maintain a healthy friendship after a break-up. Still having that mutual love and respect for the other, cheering them on as they progress in life....now that's pure innocent love.
I'm fairly sure this song is about Tony, the No Doubt bassist who she was on and off with for many, many years. When this song was written, both had settled down in their own marriages.
Pretty sure you are misreading this completely. Go back and watch the video more carefully and look for the cheering you are writing about. The song is pure irony.
This is about Gwen and Gavin. I think they may have stayed together for their kids. There’s got to be a reason why the guy in the video looks like Gavin. My opinion
@PjLovesPj, it was good to see the group "No Doubt" reunite after so many years had passed with Ms. Gwen Stefani having such a successful solo career in the music industry over the years.
I think this song shows that no matter how we think we've moved on or how many years has passed, and even if you part as friends, it still brings so many memories when you see each other. The memories just keep coming, like a flood. You're happy at first, but then you're sad. just my feeling about this song. I love it, it's very beautiful.
I know the word “iconic” gets thrown around so much these days but this video truly is ICONIC. The visuals, the acting, the facial expressions, the aesthetic and of course the song, all of it blends so beautifully. The message behind it also makes it that much more intriguing, so much emotion, it’s like watching a high fashion short film but shows love and loss and the melancholy of being friends again. This was peak Gwen in my opinion and I hope to show my grandkids one day. One of the best music videos of all time and an artistic gift ❤️
Listening in 2022 and this song still gives me chills. One of her best songs and it brings so much nostalgia, so many memories, so many tears and understanding. One of my favorite songs for life.
It’s SO absolutely without a doubt masterfully done. The feeling it inspires is incredible. I watch this video over and over more than I’d like to admit!
@@MothmanBaddie It's true. Memories of a love that now seems so far,...the time went by fast, and we remember the simple things, the time spent, the kisses, the thoughts and the feelings we felt in those days, hanging around, sharing experiences,... the heart was open...the future seemed far, we were living days that today we notice how valuable they were, how much we were enjoying.... that's why the nostalgia hits hard, ...even more if we have let the bitterness and the resentment because of the bad times Poison our hearts ...as long as we are far from heal the nostalgia could hit harder and even hurt us, making us look to the past more than we should.
I remember crying to this song every night thinking about my now ex-boyfriend, even though we were still together. I just knew it wasn’t working, no matter how much I tried, or wanted it to work. Now that I listen to this song again, there are no tears left, and I can’t help but think that it was the right choice; we’ll be happy again, just not together. After all that we’ve been through, I know we’re cool.
This song is a classic. Captured in essence like a painting about those people destined to meet but not supposed to be together. Yet, held in unspoken fond memories to be opened up on those can't sleep, late nights. Reminiscing upon a time, when one would discover so much meaning, and butterflies even in hearing that person call their name.
Or its simply about Gwen stefani still lusting after her old lover and inviting his present wife to act in the song while she plays out the scenario of cheating with the husband who is her ex. As much as i used to love this song, this disturbing discovery made it dirty for me. I wish i never watched the video and just listened to the audio as i did in my uni days. I do understand however that everyone can take the lyrics and apply it to their life.
@@Katarina23 You misunderstood the video. She’s happy he’s moved on, she’s glad that she can spend time with him and his new girl- everything’s good with them. But seeing him brings back all the old memories of when they were together- which is totally normal and understandable. Nowhere in the video is a scenario of cheating implied whatsoever. The scenes with Gwen and the guy are simply sweet MEMORIES from the past.
@@Katarina23 oh yes that's what I was thinking, the entire video is sensual and if you watch it without the volume you realize she's like yeah I'm going to bounce on him as soon as she's not watching 🤫🚀
This is a song/video that definitely hits different as an adult. If you're in your late teens early 20's, revisit this song in 10 to 15 years and you'll see. It sure hit differently for me now at 35. I was 17 when this came out.
38 and still hit in so many ways , we were too young to understand this master piece when it was realease as of now i can tell that it is part of life soundtrack , such an amazing song , video and gwen stefani looks OMG no word .
Now I’m 40. Remember I’ve heard and like this song when I was i my early 20s . Had my first boyfriend. Now we both married to other people, have kids. Still sporadically contact him because he is also my colleage. Yup, I know we are cool.
Timeless song….the whole production tugs at your heart strings….it picks a memory that you try to suppress but somehow this song conceals matters of the heart 🥺
This is the most mature song dedicated to those ex that finish their relationships were in good terms, most speak of hate for having left with another one or the problems from past rather than forgiveness like this.
@Matt Michalik not really cuz she dedicated it to her ex. There's a review about the song that even though she's been through a lot in her past relationship, she moved over and accepted how things are with her ex. Witch its really nice
@Matt Michalik no. What? No. She's remembering the past, she loved him, and now on good terms but its not gonna be the same. Some people are mature enough to know that.
I completely agree with your comment some relationships change you as a person inevitably but its what attitude you choose to take is the key as to whether you learn and grow.
This song hits a bit differently now that I'm a bit older and a bit more mature. It's okay to know you and someone else didn't work out and still be happy for them, be mature and be cordial. Be confident in yourself, and if you ever cared for them, do your best to root for their success and happiness.
For me this is one of Gwen's best songs. One of my most favorite songs and one of the best music videos i've seen. The lyrics and the melody, the music video's mood & location, simply perfect. Timeless!
She made peace that she wasn't the "one" for him and that he found his true love, but still feels waves of pain that they never worked out.
Yessss you can see they still love each other too😢
And that's a layer added with the video...On the lyrics it just sounds like she's totally over it and I find this really cool

+KennEH yup Tony :)
+Diletta Dile you cry?
+bartzky10- i don't know if im wrong but at the end we see them running all together to the lake . and it looks like the same lake they've been hanging at for their whole relationship ( como lake in this clip ) .
So to me the meaning is, they" moved on" but she still attached to the memories and still decided to stay close to their story by even buying a house near to what's linked to their past.

Nope.. just a song
YES
It's easy to idolize this kind of relationship..and it's beautiful to see..but it's not possible for everyone. Sometimes, the best thing you can do for both of you is truly forget one another and move on.
Sad
Forget like they never existed or forever be hurt :(
And i feel like that type of thinking is in itself idiolize.
I'd say in most cases it's best to stay out of each other's lives and move on.
This song hits harder as you get older.

[Verse 1]
It's hard to remember how it felt before
Now I've found the love of my life
Passes, things get more comfortable
Everything is going right
[Chorus]
And after all the obstacles
It's good to see you now with someone else
And it's such a miracle that you and me are still good friends
After all that we've been through
I know we're cool
I know we're cool
[Verse 2]
And we used to think it was impossible
Now you call me by my new last name
Memories seem like so long ago
Time always kills the pain

Remember Harbor Boulevard?
The dreaming days where the mess was made
Look how all the kids have grown
We have changed, but we're still the same

But then I chatted with my ex last night, we talked about his 2 wonderful daughters and I said "Hi" to his wife... then this song just pops into my mind again. And it actually feels good to experience this kind of relationship. Not everyone can. After all that we've been through, I know we're cool.

I just had the same experience last night with my ex and his two daughters that I, at one time, helped raise. My heart feels good today.

same for me as well. i reconnected after a few years with my ex who was probably the first man i ever really fell in love with, and we have remained friends ever since. theres never any jealousy over our respective relationships and its just really nice. to be friends with someone you had such a deep connection with, who you knew inside and out, and respect and admire now as you've gotten older. 10/10 would recommend being friends with your not-so-toxic exes.

One of the best pop music videos of all time
I love the fact that Gwen was able to create two masterpieces inspired by her feelings for her former bandmate Tony Kanal. LOVE IT 💜
Thanks for the information, have related to the song as that relationship you let go and they end up running back as a stranded 🐕
Coocko cockoon, isn't it?

Or its simply about Gwen stefani still lusting after her old lover and inviting his present wife to act in the song while she plays out the scenario of cheating with the husband who is her ex.
