Testing Tesla Refresh Model X Falcon Wing Door Sensitivity

- In todays video I test the sensors on the 2022 Tesla Model X Refresh falcon wing doors to determine if the doors will close on small objects. We use my daughters huge stuffed animal dog that she's named Big D.
Enjoy.

Glad to see Big D survive! Nice unscientific video, love it. When I was a kid, we used to have a 3 door car, and my mom always forgot that we were in the back of the car, and when we were going out, she hit us so many times in the head that is a miracle I'm still alive.
It’s great to have you back with another great video.
Hi Fernando. That's a funny story. 🤣
We're glad to be back as well.
What a beautiful daughter you have. And great assistant too!
Thank you Michael!
I loved that video. I think Tesla should put out a video like yours if they don’t already have one. Maybe Tesla can “tweet” the message to owners. Lol. Btw your daughter was GREAT on this video.
Thank you sir!
Based on this video I guess that there aren't any visual sensors but it measures the force applied to closing. If it's too much it stops. But will it be enough to seriously hurt someone it's hard to tell?
Hi Jacek. Im literally editing a follow up with exactly what you stated!
Very helpful. Love it^^
Thanks so much for the great comment and for watching!
Good to have you back. I’m amazed at how poorly the doors performed. Only the thickness of the stuffed dog prevented it from closing. A standard garage or elevator door would recoil back these stayed where they were. Sincerely Tesla and anyone with a Model X should pay attention to your video! You made a fun and important video with this one, thanks glad I got a model S.
Hi Ken. Thanks for that great comment. I had no idea that small children could potentialy get injured closing one of the flacon wing doors. I might try the same test with something more rigid. I have to see what I cud use. Maybe a whiffle bat?
Actually I think that you picked the right object something rigid may stop it but the dog would be closer to a humans density. Who cares if it stops on something hard. You pointed out that it should stop and retract when it encounters anything.
@@kmosier805 Thanks Ken. Im actually working on editing a follow up. I'll be posting today.
Good to know,! Suspect falcon wing sensors will be added to prevent this time of safety issue.
Hi Prairie. I was kind of surprised that it the door didn't stop sooner. Not sure if its doable with the way the doors and designed.
Great video!
Thank you!
Epic video. Perhaps the bear did not apply enough resistance for the doors to stop. Great video, keep them coming!!
Hi Mac. I think Im going to attempt the same using a whiffle bat. Its more firm and has more resistance. Thanks for the great comment and for watching!
A STAR is born! Miss D is SO destined to be a BRILLIANT engineer!
Keep up the interaction, Dad! Your daughter is obviously, very smart and YOUR influence can help her become an engineer at Tesla. (May want to record taking her over to Tesla's Austin plant and see what she thinks!)
Nice test! I have NO DOUBTS that someone will "bubble this up" to Elon (or someone VERY senior at Tesla!), so that they take a look at this.
At the very least, GLAD that you did these tests AND emphasized to folks NOT to let kids play around the doors, etc. The doors DO look fun (even to adults!) and there needs to be a healthy dose of safety around it.
I'm still trying to decide between the X and Y and I think you just helped me a bit in making my decision (although the X has a MUCH better interior!).
Keep up the great work!
Hi Texas Buttercup. Thanks so much for the encouraging words. I'll pass this along to my daughter. Im very lucky to have a sweet, kind, intelligent and caring young lady as my sidekick. You can't go wrong with either model you choose. I'll keep posting these videos as long as you keep watching!
@@teslaownersperspective1968 LOVE hearing about a nice family like yours! Keep up the great work Mom & Dad! Your daughter is a shining example of your love and care! Made my day!
And, absolutely will keep watching your channel - maybe you guys take short trips and show subscribers how each car rides, etc.
Will continue to share it w/others as your videos are easy to watch, informative and real (no agenda); kind of like listening to a neighbor. Thanks!
@@texasbuttercup1972 Thanks so much Texas Buttercup. We greatly appreciate that!
There are no internal active sensors on the door. The only active sensors for the door are right in the middle of the falcon wings on the roof and another one facing the outside right in the middle of the actual door. The only thing that stops the motors are the force feedback sensors feeling too much resistance. This usually works pretty good as anyone getting there arm or foot stuck in the door will start to push on it as soon as it happens and even if they didn't the door will stop before any serious damage is done. The only place on the door that can be a real hazard is where the roof and the door come together as the moment is short so it takes a lot of pressure to trip the sensor. This is where fingers can go if they were standing up and it could probably break skin and even fingers. I have seen one of these tests done with a carrot as they are harder and a little more brittle like a bone could be. The biggest scare we had in our X was when our 3 year old was crying and kicking and she started kicking at the door as it was coming down from her car seat and I worried that her ankle might end up getting twisted as the door comes down. As with any automatic doors like the ones on most minivans you really have to make sure the kids don't put their digits or appendages into the tracks or in front of the doors as they are closing.
Hi Cameron. That's good to know. I knew that the door had at least one sensor in the door so that when it opens it won't hit the top of the garage. Im glad that the doors are pressure sensitive. If not I would've lost a limb. Thanks for the info and for watching!
Getting back to you on missed paint and possible rust on underside of frunk. I had same issue. Frunk is aluminum my service tech informed me. Can't rust.
Hi Jim. That's exactly what I was told by mobile service. The frunk is aluminum and it won't. I dont like the look but at least its concealed when the frunk is closed.
It’s likely aluminum corrosion and should be a service covered repair as it may cause inside out paint bubbling and other issues.
@@endab5517 Hi Enda. So far Tesla has repaired and fixed every issue Ive had so of something happens down the line it should be covered.
Wow I’m surprised and concerned, but I wonder if the sensor will calculate the pressure applied to shut the door or not.
Thank you for another great video, still waiting for our MX.
Hi Duke. I have another video on the channel where I'm the actual test dummy. It does put pressure then releases.
@@teslaownersperspective1968 thank you for replying, I did see it it was awesome 👏, and also did hit the 👍🏼.
Thx
@@dukea4580 Hi Duke. Thanks for the great feedback and for watching!
Another great video thank you! Question my SIS model Y does not detect cars coming down the street when she is backing out of driveway. My parents subaru outback does very quickly. Any thoughts on this for your x or y? Thx
Hi Charles. Thats a good question and that I don't have a solid answer for. If I can figure out how to safely demonstrate that I'll do it. Thanks.
Miss the energy gauge on the X? Voice command "show energy". Boom there it is.
Thats a good one. Im gong to give it a try.
Can it sense cars coming from behind when opening the falcon wing doors.
Hi Jeremiah. Thats a great question. I dont know. If I can figure out how to test that I will. Thanks for watching!
I feel like if you were to use something more human like you would have different results. It’s a soft stuffed animal, not very human like at all.
How long did it take to get your car delivered
Hi Danny. I waited over a year. Probably around 14 months. Worth the wait though!
Is Tesla service good
@@dannynan6158 HI Danny. Yes its actually very good. My only complaint is the wait time. Might take a month to have your car seen and repaired.
Hey
Hi Drew! I hope you like the video and I hope that you are well.
Ya I'm doing good how are you doing
@@drewdonato9796 We're doing well. We went to a muscle car show at the mall. It was much louder than the EV show we went to.
🤣
Am I first ?
Hello Thomas. You're the first!!! 🎉
@@teslaownersperspective1968 does model X have sensor in boots ?
@@thomashemsworth1545 Great question Thomas. I'll add that to the next video!
