I know some people really love this idea of coming home to this bundle of hype, but what people see as excitement is really just anxiety. You're so right about this calmer approach! This has been the best thing for my rescue dog who was previously anxiety-ridden.

Thiiiis. I read a book that said that dogs that seem like they're just overly excited never get treated for their chronic anxiety. Really stuck with me. Our girl has extreme social excitement but I also know it's not healthy for her and is a form of anxiety.

Such a good and important advice! My aussie was doing so well at being alone right away when we started practicing after I first got him, then at puppy class they told us to have a command word for when we leave our dog home alone... all of this was of course with the intention that it would keep them calm because they’d know what’s going on and we’ll be back soon. So I tried it. Didn’t take long before my boy started getting anxious whenever I told him “see you soon!” though, so I stopped that pretty quickly and soon enough he wasn’t reacting so strongly anymore when I left.
I’m sure a simple goodbye without excitement can work for some dogs, but breeds like aussies that are SO reactive and consantly tuned into what we’re doing and excited to do anything with us at all times, in my experience I def think this is the kindest and calmest approach for their sake. :)

I also have a herding breed. I just leave. Sometimes I am back in 30 seconds taking out the trash. Sometimes I am back in 30 minutes getting groceries. And sometimes I am gone for hours. He does not know the difference.
I am in and out of the house often enough that it does not even gets any attention from him anymore. The last thing I would want to do is somehow signal a reason for my dog to be upset.
Don't make a big deal out of something you dont want your dog to react strongly to. It aint roccket science.

This is so true. My pup is the cutest and I nearly explode every time I come home, but I don't allow myself to greet her until I've come in, set everything down, washed my hands, and by that time she sits and awaits her attention.

I did this a lot more when my dog was younger. She was a lock down puppy, so I already had to prepare for separation anxiety and behavior issues. She still gets stressed when I leave, eventhough I don't say goodbye. She settles down after a couple minutes and is good about self soothing. She's terrible when people come in the door, but that's on my family always making a big deal of coming home. I still say hello to her, but I don't hype her up, no baby talk or calling for her or letting her jump up. When she realizes I'm home, we just sit on the couch and say hi because we missed each other all day. It's okay that she's a little excited to see me, as long as she's not being too rough, overly excited, or stressed.

Interesting. In Germany pretty much every dog trainer tells you to say hello calmly to the dog. There is quite some research about how it’s good for the level of oxytocin that’s released in both the human and the doggo. There is a difference between saying hello in that crazy way you showed or just calmy saying hi

I think there's a big difference between acknowledging and hyping them up. I use a quick "bye bud" as a signal that I'm going to be out for a while; it's a cue as opposed to an emotional response. What you demonstrated on the improper greetings *is* exactly what I tell people not to do because it amps them up, but I like having a distinct cue for "going to be gone for a while" so the dog knows what to expect as I leave. Hence a short, nonchalant, "bye/see ya later."
Same with greetings! A quick "hey pup" and then going about your regular business before greeting is totally fine! It's when you hype them up with a happy voice and encourage jumping that it becomes a problem. It's much more about your overall emotional state than whether you do or don't greet. If you want in the door, pat your dog gently and acknowledge them, but are calm and quiet, they should be fine. If you're active and energetic, that's a recipe for making dogs jump, scratch, and generally lose control of themselves.
I think the "ignore them entirely" advice is, honestly, best for the *people* to break that habit of excitedly greeting/saying farewell. People have a way harder time breaking habits, and "you can greet but you have to be calm and continue doing whatever you would normally do after" is a way more convoluted instruction than simple "don't greet your dog for 5-10 minutes when you get home." One is a clear instruction, the other is very open to interpretation.

    • @FrankieToTheMoon
      @FrankieToTheMoon  3 роки тому

I was being more dramatic to emphasize my point. I can’t explain every scenario cause every dog and owner are different. I can do greetings with Frankie and he will show no emotion but I can’t with Indie cause even eye contact gets her wound up. So I was just simply giving general advice for drastic measures

I do the same thing. We make leaving and coming back a non-event. Partner once broke the rule and elaborately said goodbye before work, and it was the only time I have ever heard him whine when someone left the house.
And that was just ONCE. Imagine doing that every single day. Makes you wonder how many dogs with seperation anxiety were accidentally conditioned into that behavior.

  • @Lunika1367

This is actually something I should try with my Aussie as she freaks out when we leave and come home, it's crying/whining and howling when we leave ... And bit over a week ago I finally got the blue merle pup I always wanted ~ I should use the entry/leave home method u use on her to avoid those issues for later! It may seem cruel to some ppl but it's healthier for the dog I'd say! Plus will help avoid destruction if it's a pup or a young dog! Thank you for the video, always a pleasure watching your vids 😀

I think this is super important! Out of curiosity though, when do you break the ignoring? For example, you walk in, don’t acknowledge them, go about your business by taking your shoes off, putting your stuff down etc. Once you do that, when do you decide it’s ok to interact with your dog again? And how should you do it? Do you say hi then? Or just sit down and let your dog come to you?

It's actually a myth to ignore dogs when you get home. Ignoring is seen as weird behavior for dogs. Saying a calm hello is recommended as the dog feels acknowledged, but isn't allowed to get too excited. Ignoring your dog can make them feel confused and upset. Many canine behaviorists and canine consultants (dog experts in psychology and behavior, and training with their masters degree-phD) recommend having a calm hello instead of ignoring your dog. It's been denounced as a big myth! Not saying hello can be more damaging than having an excited hello and risking separation anxiety.
Some people may disagree with my comment or find it rude, but I write this with the best intentions to help out other dog owners. I'm pursuing canine training as a career and have done a lot of research on training and nutrition for the past two years. I hope you at least consider my advice!

@@FrankieToTheMoon Wasn't trying to imply you were cruel or awful at all! Thank you for responding. Good to hear that you greet him after. That is a part of saying hello when you get home: some trainers recommend teaching the dog to wait until your done getting your stuff off and bag put down and calm talking to them or something and then greeting them. Or tossing some treats down to calm them down naturally through the smelling and licking first. Take care!

I was with a Golden Retriever for the weekend, he is not mine but the owners were on vacation so I watched the dog. He literally barks at everything. When someone’s at the door, when someone’s walking in, when you put food in his bowl, when you put water in his bowl, when you walk up the stairs, when you walk down the stairs, when you call him to go out, when you put on his leash, so on and so forth. The dog is such an angel tho, but he is (I think) overly excited and stressed. But how do I deal with that because he literally barks at everything and I do not know how to stop it.

My question to you is HOW do you get family and friends to respect what you're doing and implement the same things. This is my biggest struggle. I would spend weeks training one thing, like not jumping up or getting excited and then a family member or friend comes in (encouraging jumping even by clapping on their stomach....)and then undoes all I have worked at and says stuff like. An alpha will do a calm and graceful greeting. But they still greet eachother. So there is nothing wrong with greeting or saying goodbye, as long as it is a calm and short one. I suggest implementing a good bye phrase like ”I will be back shortly” said only once in a very calm matter. And as you train this you do come back shortly of course. But many people forget that you need to do training on leaving them.
I use sign language as well as the spoken words for my dogs. So they know exactly what it means when I give them the sign for ”I’ll be back shortly”. All completely silent. And they actually go to lay down and take a rest before I even leave. I think it is much more fair to let them know what is up. Not making a big deal of it, of course. Just an alternative to your method.

How exactly training your dog makes you the "bad" person? Only if u do it wrong the dog may hate u or dislike u over time, my 2 and half months old Aussie I started train her and she seem extremely happy and loving every moment learning new things and I praise her every time she does it right with treats and positive words, saying nothing negative or show frustration if she doesn't get what I want from her... Training your dog is also bonding time between you and your pup/dog, you connect and trust is gained... Nothing bout it makes you the "bad guy" if you do it RIGHT. Yes sometimes my pup is being too stubborn bout plucking stuff from my desk bottom drawers and she forces me to put her in her training "cage" but that training "cage" also was my older aussie's "home" till she arrived and some of my cats used it as well to sleep there lol training your dog should not make you the 'bad guy' if your dog is becoming more and more well behaving and your relationship becomes even stronger as training the dog usually gets the dog to listen to u more than to rest the family (not always but usually the case) ur not the 'bad guy' for training ur doggo.

As someone that has done animal communication for over 20 yrs., I beg to differ with you in the kindest way. I teach people how to communicate with their animals through mental pictures. Sounds strange...maybe. I use it a lot in 4H groups with horses, cows, rabbits, goats, dogs and cats and personal consultations for farm animals. Animals are not stupid (as a lot of people think) and they do much better with simple explanations in a calm matter. You never send a negative picture when communicating with them...don't jump on the couch....rather show them a mental picture of them next to the couch, laying or sitting down; simple. I have always told my animals approximately how long I'll be gone. Maybe mine are just used to it. But by not acknowledging them, you are doing them a great injustice. You don't have to make a big deal out of it..leaving and coming back...just 'talk' to them.
