- In this video I show how to find the height of cut on a John Deere 260SL reel mower and a Toro Greensmaster 1000 reel mower. I use two different methods. The first method of finding the height of cut is simple and can be done using tools you have around your home already. All you will need is something that is long and straight like a level or a scrap 2x4 that can span the distance between the rear drum and the front roller of the reel mower and a tape measure. Using the level you will put one end on the rear drum and the other end on the front roller of the reel mower. You then measure the distance from the top of the level to the top of the bedknife and that will tell you your height of cut! Nice and easy!
The second way is by purchasing a height of cut gauge and using that. This way will be much more accurate and can measure down to the 1000th of an inch to get a perfect match on both sides every time. However the tool is not cheap and you may not want to pony up all that money to just find something you can do with tools you have already. I really wanted to keep it! But with a 26" I'd be done in minutes.

Really interesting, thank you for sharing.
Thanks for watching!
Brett's grasscapades great live stream video tonight.
@@paultanner2007 thanks man it was a ton of fun I think I'm going to start doing them more often.
Hey man, I have a 260SL and taking the cap off isn’t necessary to change the height of cut. Just turn the outside bolts. There is a worm gear under the cap that actually adjusts the HOC. There actually should be a speed link bar that connects the two inside bolts and turns both sides together (his may be missing as I didn’t notice it in the normal storage position). It takes around 100 turns of the bolt just to move the HOC 1/8”, so it seems like you’re not getting anywhere, but you are...
His wasn't moving at all with the outside bolts, we actually pulled them out and I could see the worm gear inside so that does make sense. This mower was in rough shape so the gears inside may have been worn out. I thought that would have been the case though I'm glad you confirmed this for me! Thank you sir!
Brett's grasscapades no problem bud... there’s a couple of components in there that could be stripped or broken..
@@Brettsgrasscapades just found this video, I recently got a 220SL that appears to have the same issue, but based on what the other person said now i'm not so sure. If I use the ratchet to turn the bolts they keep turning over and over but I can't really tell if HOC is actually being adjusted? Also, how do you get the caps off? Tried grabbing with pliers but can't seem to get them off.
@@andrewbrackin6149 can you email me at Jeff@sgatour.com, I just bought one and out green in my background 3 weeks ago and need to cut it, so I need to adjust .Thx
So they trick is to find a height that you like and keep it there, right? Seems like a lot of work to adjust it!
Yeah the height of cut isn't something you change very often. The only reason to check it is to make sure you haven't bumped into something and its changed.
The accusing bar lets you do both sides at once
First again.
you're never first Jonny.
Says the guy who made a video on checking HOC after not checking his own and mowing at 1/16”
@@Jmfokken it was 1/4" come on now give me some credit!
Brett's grasscapades what’s 3/16” between two members of sucks brothers incorporated?
Another one gets “reel” about mowing.
